Parents also need to be held accountable and less demanding on teachers. Imagine getting 400 texts a day from parents who do nothing but complain and threaten you. Sounds like an absolute nightmare. I hope there is a solution to help relieve the stress that teachers have to endure.

I don't even think parents should have a direct communication channel with the teachers like this. If they have any complaints there should be a place to take the complaints and investigate, no direct communication with the teacher at any point. Some parents are a nightmare to deal with.

My first year in Korea, I was a teacher in a private language academy. My boss only cared about money and making the parents happy. Everything that happened, no matter what, was the teacher's fault. No matter what the students or parents said/did, it was the teacher's fault. I am a qualified teacher in two different countries: I have a master's degree in education from my home country and a post graduate certificate in education from the UK, and yet he was always telling me I was incompetent and that everything was my fault. A lot of teachers in Korea find themselves between two unhinged and unreasonable sides: an uncaring and lazy administration that thinks that making the parents happy is paramount no matter what; and parents who have nothing better to do all day than to pester teachers about their precious monster of a child. They really think nothing is more important than their child. They don't want their children to face consequences about their bad actions. They are creating a new generation of spoiled, badly raised narcissists who think the entire world revolves around them.

Absolutely agree. And I thought Korean's culture was based on Confucianism values, where elders and are respected and in return, the elders teach, guide and look out for the younger ones. Quite appalled that the "elders" in Korea (or at least in the education system), couldn't care less about their teachers at all. Very surprised too that the Korean parents don't even have a modicum of respect for teachers. It used to be that teachers were highly respected in society.
Guess I know now why Koreans have the highest suicide rate in the developed world.

South Korea will fall apart as a society because it is festered with bullies and opportunists alike. The narcissistic children you are shaping now, will be the ones who will ruin the future because their parents wouldn't hold them accountable for their own actions. As a teacher, my heart goes out to the SK teacher's who are suffering in the hands of the demanding parents and useless authorities. Rest in peace for the fallen souls. I fervently hope that this dire situation will change for you or else, they might find teacher shortages soon. Let's commemorate these brave and honorable teachers this World Teacher's Day. 💞

Korean bf tend to demand their gf to submit to their order, for example, the gf cannot go out with someone else without approval, the gf must seek approval for whatever clothes she wears. at work, the boss can beat the staff. the rich can take advantage of the poor. etc etc. it is sick country with sick culture.

A child’s behavior typically stems from the way their parents behave. Bullying is such a huge issue in Korea in adults and children. Until the adults choose to correct themselves and their behaviors, the problem will continue to exist, a hierarchy should only be respected if those who are your seniors respect their juniors. Respect is a two way street. Korea is known for respectful gestures and attitudes towards their seniors, but not the other way around.

In the UK it's highly recommended that teachers don't give out their school emails let alone their personal mobile numbers, that's unheard of. If a parent wants a meeting with a teacher they need to arrange it with the teacher at pick up or drop off time or go through the school office and leave a message. Even just little things like this would afford teachers so much more protection and boundaries with overbearing parents

I think there is a culture of physical altercation in Korea. Just look at the k-dramas, when the characters are not happy with each other, they start to fight. I'm not sure why these scenes are even broadcast unless it's to boost its viewership ratings. After years of watching these scenes, this could be their reflex mode of reacting to anger. I would propose to boycott k-dramas which promote violence by banning or censoring the parts where violence is being shown.
Also, the school shouldn't let the parents look for the teachers in the classroom. It's disrupting the class. What if the parents of the bullied child went to look for the student who bullied their child?

    • @Live4Luv
      @Live4Luv 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +9

@@tjy1115 What you said was right!!! K-dramas showcase what Korean society is like. There are so many true stories hidden. When bullying is taken seriously, these kind of painful incidents won't repeat. To nurture a kid, both the teacher and parent should go hand in hand. Kids tend to lie. It doesn't mean they're right or wrong. It might be out of fear or jealous. Lashing out at someone without knowing the details is horrendous. I don't know what this gen kids are going to learn. Everyday I'm listening to unpleasant incidents happening. I want people to think more sensibly instead of acting in the spur of the moment like a child.

well, as a Korean national who travelled India many times, I like to say something to you and to a Korean above in this comment. Both Korea and India has been brainwashed by Western centric agenda at least since we were born to this world, the world was already formed with the notion that only the West is civilized and all the rest are barbaric, ignorant and poor. It's to divide the Asia so that they can conquer it. In truth, the West is the most barbaric one who invaded other countries and killed them and kept fooling them by deception. Other than that, Every one every country has their own uncivilized parts, which is for improvements, not for comparisons or hatred. It makes me sad that this stupid Korean above is a complete sheep who believes everything he's been propagandized by media or even by a damn stupid travel youtuber, and believes that bashing India is a tight thing to do. Instead of reflecting on his country's problems. Pathetic.
And to you, if you are Indian and genuinly concerned about my country, just know that there are many layers to it, why these social problems occur and leave us all frustrated yet again. More than just the system itself, for sure much more other aspects than international media ever cover, likewise.

Everything was always the teacher's fault--I even had a boss who hired me just to read with students, and my schedule was always changing, and it was obvious he was just using me as he deemed fit, and then one day he sat in on my class, was rude to me on front of the students, and then with a smile on his face after class, told me I was an awful teacher. My grandfather was in the hospital at this time on his deathbed and I asked my boss if I could have a week to go home to see him one last time and he laughed at me. This situation is the polar opposite to how it was when I was a kid in Korea.
Even in relatively recent times(early 2000s), Korean teachers actively demanded for bribe money (촌지) from their students' parents. Teachers even blatantly favored the students whose parents complied with these demands.
I remember getting beaten up like a stray dog for being poor and not being able to gift my elementary school teacher her "Birthday Money". She beat me up so severely with a wooden stick that I passed out. I remember my parents not being able to complain to the school due to their low socio-economic status.
Teachers were very violent back then. Many of my friends remember getting punched and kicked by our teachers.

I am taking a course to become an elementary teacher in Korea. From a few years ago, parents didn't discipline their children at all and accepted everything wrong, so their children became like little emperors. Parents are suing teachers for child abuse, blaming all the students for not arguing at school, but fighting at academies and playgrounds. Parents create group chat rooms among themselves and swear at their children's homeroom teachers. Because teacher didn't give them a personal phone number. Even if you go to a cafe around the school, you can hear some mom cursing at their children’s homeroom teacher
Parents are even say it’s Emotional child abuse for telling a child who chews gum during class not to chew gum, and emotional child abuse for telling him to do his homework that he didn't do.
There was a teachers strike for the first time on September 4. At that time, the Office of Education (governmental department in charge of education in Korea) threatened teachers participating in the strike, saying they would cut salaries or have a bad effect, and parents also criticized them for not having a sense of duty and responsibility as teachers. Many of my seniors committed suicide because of school and parents. I'm really worried if this is the right way for me

Some would text her super early in the morning or late at night through the school app. I believe due to such a low birth rate in Korea, Korean parents in this current generation have been led to believe (by the government) that their child is precious. How can parents blame their children's behaviors to the teachers??? The primary education of the children happens at home. And you, parents, are the first teachers of your own kids.
In 2012, I once worked with a Korean family before as a home tutor. The first year was tough coz the kid and I had so many misunderstandings. I was 20 and was bullied by a 7-year-old kid. 😅 I was about to quit when his parents came and apologized me. These lines I will never forget when his dad said "I want to apologize for my son's behavior. As a parent, I'm deeply ashamed. My son's character shows what kinds of parents we are." He even asked the kid to kneel in front of me and apologized. After 3 years, they'd left my country and moved to China. Then, I came to China in 2019 to work and I met them again. And I saw this respectful and gentle young man he is now ... I didn't even say it but I really applauded how his parents raise him and I'm so proud to be a part of his life.
This is also one big problem our teachers in China had to deal with. So far, I never heard teachers taking their own life. Watching this was difficult. I empathized with the teacher who lost their life due to issues within the educational system. In my country (Philippines), teachers cannot share their contact numbers; instead, parents need to request appointments through the discipline's office. If a student faces bullying, they are advised to report it to the discipline's office, which handles investigations and notifies parents to come to the school, avoiding direct teacher-parent confrontations. This system proves effective for everyone. Interestingly, in my daughter's school, numerous Korean students are studying. A Korean parent told me the challenges of bullying in South Korea, explaining why they chose to have their children study abroad. Watching this documentary, now, I have the answers to my questions.

Being a teacher is one of the hardest job ever, i swear. It's draining most of the time, emotionally, mentally and physically. Imagine, everyday a teacher has to adjust to different students with different personalities, some are respectful, many aren't ,and still no matter how you feel, you have to face the classes with enthusiasm and kindness and understanding. It's just natural for small accidents to happen in school, and nobody wants that. Even if the parents are paying the school they don't have the right to act inhumane, to bully teachers. Is it too much to let small things slide? I meant, unless the teacher physically, verbally, emotionally and mentally abuse your kid, that i think is the only time a parent must react strongly. Well, they wouldn't understand unless they try being a teacher.

Unfortunately, this doesn't happen only in Korea but a bit everywhere around the world. As a European I'm so glad I left my teaching days behind. It was the best decision I've ever made! I loved being a teacher and all my students but the rest was a complete living Hell. It's when you think of your students that makes you hold back and put yourself in second place. But there is only a limit you can handle and if you can't take care of yourself, no one else will for you. As a teacher you are very poorly paid and you're putting your health on the line every single day. I've got burnout, anxiety and depression. The thing about mental issues is that there's only so much you can do for treatment. Somethings always stay with you no matter how much therapy and medication you go under. You can adjust to those traumas a bit better in your life but some will always stay with you no matter what. I feel so sad for those teachers that took their own lives due to their job for I can totally relate to their helplessness feelings. I hope they are at peace now

She was yelling outside school like crazy waiting for me, saying she was going to beat me up because she was convinced, I hated her child. Her kid was actually a nice kid, just had some learning issues that were present in every subject. However, she redirected everything to me. How lucky! If I'll tell you all the stories, you wouldn't believe even half of them. Besides dealing with parents and kids, also having to deal with other teachers and school staff trying to do everything in their power to screw others, was a daily insane survival task . All the environment was absolutely awful. There was one year that the day before and the first day after Spring break I had so much anxiety, that I constantly felt I was going to throw up any moment. No Parent should feel entitled to abuse teachers. No child should feel emboldened to complain when in the wrong. It starts at home. The teachers should be given psychological support. Verbal abuse is just as bad if not worse than physical abuse, because of the ability to prove ane have administration support. Ultimately, the children lose out. I agree. It seems that the teachers in Korea were treated as some sort of a paid person as an extension of their household. Regardless if it's a public or private sector, they aren't being paid to coach or train your young ones. In my country, we also call the teachers as "advisers" which make sense, because they guide (technically giving advise- they're opening paths) both parents raising their kids intellectually and the kids on their journey of learning. They're not only there to teach you history and math but they also also give suggestions and offer children choices. knowing that Korean people values "heirarchy", like seniority. There is definitely a stigma in social status in Korea.. I cannot fathom how that works. In my country, the teachers are considered hero because they are one of the key factors molding the children's future. There are laws protecting both children and teachers. Also, the education system no matter what country you're from is absolute. It is not a three way deal. And you are right, discipline always starts at home- so there is the parent and the child. Now this is very true; you are a reflection of your child. The parent is the one responsible for the character development of a child. That kid doesn't have judgement of what's right and wrong, they only know what they like and don't. Society will influence them but the school protects, educate and guide children.. what's in it in school? The teachers and other school faculty. What protects both students and the teachers? The law. That is what education system should be. Humility shouldn't compromise with the quality of education being served. The interaction between students, parents and teachers should be humanely achievable.

And the school management and administration teams? How are they going to face the parents and families of these now deceased teachers?🤔
I wonder. And I hope they carry this as a heavy burden on their souls, and to their own graves. ( I know it's strong but after career shifting to becoming a teacher in the last 2 years, I can relate to this in many ways....)
This is bizarre as this topic reminds me of what I experienced in Egypt - the only exception is that, although I understand Arabic, being a 'foreign' teacher meant I was not allowed to speak in Arabic to parents. (So slightly sheltered from narcy, emotionally immature parents who only know how to flash their money, and nothing else!
However, as there is no clear, established system ( safeguarding isn't even a 'thing ' in Egypt) I realised within 6 months+ that nothing and no one could help or protect me -not even from the school management, administration and HR teams - who proved to be disgusting, horrendous individuals, and actually were much worse than the parents!
Things are not perfect in the UK either, but there is a general discussion around mental health and wellbeing without it being seen as a taboo or a sign of weak character - humans are not robots! You can also sue your employer for workplace bullying, and no parents would stalk teachers like in the video, because the teachers can report it to not just the school governance but also the police!

These parents are culprit of their kids' disrespectful and uncivilized behaviors. The children's basic education comes from their parents and clearly many parents failed in that aspect, big time. Second of all, the vice principal must be the one who should apologize for doing such a terrible job in protecting her teachers. I guess her honor has a price. Shame on her. It's no wonder from who these unruly children take after. Based on how one mother acted, how she stormed into the school and humiliated the teacher, well, the apple doesn't fall far from the tree. Being a teacher is a huge responsibility, but many parents are making things worse instead of working with the teachers. If they know better, then they should stop sending their kids to school. I am saddened by this case and although I am not in Korea, I believe this is a growing problem in most developed countries. I am from Singapore. I am not surprised that this happened, as nowadays parents often have just one or two children and tend to mollycoddle them, only listening to their perspectives. Recently, I overheard a conversation between a parent and her daughter. The mother asked, "Is Mdm Koh afraid now? Why didn’t you use your phone to record her?" She also inquired about her daughter's chemistry teacher. The daughter replied that the teacher didn’t teach much and instead asked them to solve some questions on the board. The mother commented, "Such an easy life."
From these conversations, it is evident that the mother only listens to her daughter and possibly harbors some prejudice or trauma from her own youth that causes her to dislike teachers. The mother is imparting the wrong values to her daughter, and yet nothing is being done about it. Why are there signs indicating that one cannot abuse customer service workers, including US drivers, but not for teachers? Are teachers not human too? This situation reflects a downfall in values and society if it is not rectified.

Parents please be reminded that not all the time they will take care of your children one by one and eye to eye.. they have a lot of students so there’s no assurance that they will look 100 % of your children.. but as long as they can Im sure they’re doing their best to do their part. So please don’t blame the teachers instead understand their sincerely explanation regarding on what really happened. Because they also have feelings like you as parents because they are the second parents of your children too. Lets be open minded. 😢 Rest in peace to those teachers who took their own life to just disappear their unexplainable feelings.😢

I am seriously disgusted and angered at this. I'm in tears. This is awful. I will be continuously checking up on s korea to see if they change their education system. as a mother of elementary children, never in my wildest dreams would I ever attack a teacher. kids will be kids. they get hurt. they lie. this is absurd. absolutely absurd.

My heart goes out to all the teachers and their families. Such a very sad situation and I hope that very soon South Korea will begin to respect and protect their teachers because without them we will fall as a society. SHAME to that parent for using violence on a teacher and SHAME to all the parents harassing teachers at all hours!!!!
