What about the rest of the connections I mean you just leave it unplug? I freaking went crazy thinking its my starter I ended up getting 2 starter and returned them one was actually bad. So I have a 2001 BMW Z3 is that going to be in the glove box also? Thanks
Does this work for an E36 Z3? Also, do you disconnect the battery before adding the jumper wire? And, do you just let the yellow plug hang loose from then on?
It seems like the Z3's share the same EWS2 system as a regular E36 up until 1999, where it was then updated to EWS3D. Regardless, as far as I'm aware, they're both very similar systems, so I'd believe that it would work. It's at least worth a shot. Also, no need to disconnect the battery. The module only receives power if your key is in the ignition, so just make sure it's not in there when you're putting the jumper wire in. And finally, yep! You can just hang it loose. I wrapped mine up with some electrical tape to keep the wire from wiggling out while driving. If after doing this, the car cranks over but does not start, you'll have to look into deleting the EWS control bit from your DME. It's a very simple process but you'd have to buy an obd cable with an FTDI chip as well as a flashing software like MS41.
I did a swap, the car turns, but it doesn't start, I found out that it's because the spark doesn't reach the spark plugs correctly, can I try that, without it ruining anything? I saw some comments saying that the windows stopped working and other things like that

So will this method work with all E36 Ews2 systems? Never had a problem starting it til recently. So I just wanna know will this method work
I would imagine that given your scenario, it's pretty likely that it would work. EWS usually just dies out of nowhere like that. At the very least, I'd argue its worth a shot
1998 318ti with EWS2 here, the bridge didn't work. cut and connected the wires didn't work. plugged in the ews again with the wires cut and connected, and it works, but the windows don't work.
Hey, so my car is a 1996 328is. One thing I found out about after uploading this video is that in certain situations like yours, you may have to modify a control bit in the car's DME to basically trick it into thinking that the EWS module is getting power, even though it actually isn't. I've been seeing more and more people running into this issue, and messing with the DME can definitely be pretty intimidating, so I'll actually be making another video on this topic this week as kind of a walkthrough for this process!

You ever find out the issue? I’m going through the same issue as you. Cranks but no start even with start fluid. Already changed cam/crank sensor. Really stumped
Thatbmwguy 12 sorry I just saw this and for my car it is a 96’ so you need the key with the transponder chip and all the DME components ( dme , ews module, and key ring antenna) to be in working condition so I took all of it out from my other 96 328is and swapped it over and still nothing so sorry to say I’m stumped as well !
Yeah so the yellow plug is for the EWS2 module, which was introduced in 1996. OBD1 E36's will have EWS1, which is likely what you're looking at. Something worth checking for you if you haven't already is the starter relay, as that going bad generally has the same symptoms as an EWS2 module going bad

I also have the ECU tuned from Kassel performance with EWS delete but i still get no crank if i don't bypass the EWS. thanks, in advance
@@stormkaandorp6194yes I did get it started after doing a lot of troubleshooting. My workaround is I must plug the EWS back into place then I joined the two big wires together as in the video, but from behind the plug. For some reason it won’t start if the EWS is not plugged in…even with the two big wires are joint.
@@stormkaandorp6194 Sounds like your car had the same problem as mine . The problem with my car is the EWS is bad and the camshaft sensor is also bad. So when I bypass the EWS, the car cranks, but will not start, it acts like there is no spark or no fuel. This is because the camshaft sensor was bad. The way I test to see if my car got spark or fuel is to spray some starter fluid into the intake and start the car. If the car starts, that means you get no fuel. If the car does not start, that means you got no spark. I replace the camshaft sensor and my car started right up. Make sure when you remove the old camshaft sensor You also remove the rubber O-ring. When you reinstall the camshaft sensor, replace the O-ring also and make sure it is installed all the way in. Otherwise the sensor will not be able to read the camshaft correctly. If you’re not sure, just refer to TH-cam videos on how to install it. Good luck.

Mine is an obd2. All mine does is crank fast sometimes. Changed fuel pump, added a relay directly from fuel pump to battery, checked relay and fuses. Only way for the fuel pump to get power is to ground fuse #18. If i do that, no fuse or relay is needed. Car does not start, only cranks. Ecu doesn't smell burnt. Changed crank and camshaft sensors. My ews wires seem good. I am lost and have no idea what to do. Can't plug in obd2 scanner because it gives me an error. Any idea?
Built m52 motor, turbo, walbro 450, rpd22 tune, and much more. Got it non running, said it was just the fuel pump. Changed it to the walbro and it wasn't
Hmmm okay so to me it sounds like maybe you're dealing with a situation where your ecu thinks that ews exists, but because it isn't validating the signal, it won't let you crank. One solution for that that I've seen is changing a control bit on your ecu using your own tuning software such as romraider. The problem is that i'm not sure if you'd technically be able to do that without messing with your current tune
If you look up something along the lines of "ews delete romraider" you might be able to find some info that could help. Car sounds like it'll be a complete riot once you're able to get it started though haha. For sure planning on turbo'ing mine in the near future

Has anyone done this on an EWS1? Can you please confirm if it worked? I have a 94 BMW 318i
update?
It is not the fix, it only crancks and cranks and the battery is dead
I have a BMW X3 2005, I can't make it start even though I spent money already taking the immobilizer to be programmed again with another key. Do you think this would be the solution? It's EWS3
I would definitely take a look online to see if people have been able to successfully jump the EWS3 module like I do in the video. If it's possible with EWS3 as well, then I'd definitely recommend trying it and seeing what happens
Have a 2004 x3, same issue. How did you resolve?
this work for e46s too?
I'm not 100% sure on all e46's, but it appears to work on some! Worth a shot at least
hi,did you solve your problem?
Dont work at a bmw e36 318is of 1998 with EWS 2. i bridge pin number 3 and 1 / green-black and black yellow??
Did you figure this out. I have the same model 318is
Maybe work in a bmw x5 ?
I have a 1997 318I with EWS problems. It looks very different behind the glove box.
Did you solve your issue on the 97 318i ??
@@kevincurry9417 Don't know yet. The shop says it's the ring that goes around the ignition lock. It's been on order for three weeks.
@@mikeblast7507 thanks for the fast reply. What are your symptoms
@@kevincurry9417 I turn the ignition key, the lights and accessories come on, but the starter won't engage. (replaced the starter also, but had no impact).
@@mikeblast7507 are you able to push start it?

@@joshuacruz4046 had chipped the ecu and delete the dme
Help! i have a 98 M3 s52. I tried this bypass and it cranks, but no start. Then i try plug back onto EWS and then bypass the two big wires so it cranks, but still no start. i checked all fuses in engine bay and they are good. I also have the ECU tuned from Kassel performance with EWS delete but i still get no crank if i don't bypass the EWS. thanks, in advance
Did you fix it?
@@stormkaandorp6194yes I did get it started after doing a lot of troubleshooting. My workaround is I must plug the EWS back into place then I joined the two big wires together as in the video, but from behind the plug. For some reason it won’t start if the EWS is not plugged in…even with the two big wires are joint.
@@cya3651if I do the same it will put on the starter, but i have no spark
Good luck.
my 97 bmw m3 has that issue where its powered on but wont start u just hear an click noise. I'll normally just wait and try every few minutes till it finally decides it wants to start. y'all think bypassing the ews will solve it bc it happens very frequently.
you figure that out - sounds like my issue and im here surfing for a soloution
Is this safe? I just taped everything off incase
But it did work! I did this due to the install of a turner Motorsport chip. The car would crank but not turn on and now it does
Mine is an obd2.
@@Brunboi That's the thing. If the ecu is tuned, they have to have deleted the ews right code right? And me and my buddy actually downloaded romraider a while back because we wanted to do our own tune, just never really went through with buying the software since it didn't start.
@@Brunboi Also, pretty sure you're supposed to connect the laptop to the obd2 chord in order to use Romraider correct? If that's the case, my obd2 port isn't reading
325 is just a smaller enginez not an older car. Maybe you mean facelift or prefacelift
How to remove the yellow box, I cannot find a way to wiggle it out.
Good looks my car got head unit stolen and wouldn’t start after gonna try this today
does it work on M43 318i?
It's worth a shot. I think that if your issue is directly with the EWS, then yes it should work
Hey Herbert, did it work?
do i need to plug it for long term use
edit didn’t bypass it on 1997 328i just cranks the starter
what about 850ci 1995 has 2 DME

Will this work on a 2005 bmw z4
I was wondering the same thing. Is yours ews3?
What about 01 530
Didnt work with my e36 wires started burning
Sooo.... If i hear The fuel pump and it doesnt crank it means that i have ews 1?
What year is the car? If you hear the fuel pump then it would likely be ews 2
Its a 97 e36 316i m43b16. I was intrested if this trick works on it.
And if it does work, isnt it better to soulder the two wires together and put the plug back în?
@@paulmosoiu6973 Yeah you likely are working with ews 2 then, so this trick should work for you if the module itself is what has gone bad
@@paulmosoiu6973 I mean, you could do whatever you want so long as the two ports on the plug are jumped. I didn't want to solder mine due to laziness, so I just wrapped it in electrical tape and left the plug hanging
Does this work for 1999 bmw 328i
It should since the EWS modules across the E36 and E46 are pretty similar. Worth a shot at the very least
Did you figure it out I have the same car and I’m racking my brain trying to figure this out?
PLEASE SOMEONE HELP ME GUYS! I got a m52b20 without ECU so i went to Automobile junkyard and got this ecu from a sedan e36 MS41.0 5WK9 022 1 427 703 i try to start the engine but i didnt have spark the engine was turning without spark! so i whent back to junkyard and buy the ewsll from the same car that i got the ecu , but! i find out that my ecu was from another car so the ews was different ( ewsll WBACB61000AP29194-2D47J) . so anyone can tell me what do to ? do i buy another ecu cause this one has emmo do i open it somehow or do a make a remap with this ews to the ecu i got and make also an new key? thanks a lot .
For the march
Jumping those two heavy wires on our E36 M3 will allow the engine to spin over, but will not let it start up.
what was the solution?
Legend worked for me 😁
I’ve never had this problem my 328is has always started right up no problem even at 0 degree weather but now at 34 degrees the other day it killed when I turned the key, all lights came on but it’s like turning the key hit a kill switch then my battery was dead, can ews go out over night or do I have a parasitic draw
I did it, now it cranks but doesn’t start
did you ever figure it out?
No
