2022 Ford Expedition | MotorWeek Road Test

- The Ford Expedition arrived in the late 1990s, a time when carmakers seemingly couldn’t build SUVs fast enough or big enough to satisfy people’s desire for big off-roaders. Well, through four generations, it has matured into a fully modern utility, checking off all of the boxes of today’s buyer’s must-have list. So, where do we go from there?

I don't know about reliability but a vehicle that big getting to 60 that fast with that decent of gas mileage is really incredible.
The reliability of those EcoBoost Expeditions are horrible infact they're at the bottom of the list by a long shot.
Driving a unreliable vehicle everywhere can show you really are a rich person, with unlimited time and money to burn.
Not my experience. I've got a 2017 with 210,000 miles on it and I haven't done anything but maintenance yet although I plan to do the timing chain soon just to make sure I don't run into any problems but I don't even have a chatter.
That Expedition should have a 7.3 liter V8 Godzilla engine option.
And or a 5.0 coyote or a revised 5.4 liter V8.
@@danielyoshio Yea, I forgot about that long lived stalwart. Ford used that in lots of cars and trucks.
@DC You'd be giving up quite a bit of torque. I like the Coyote in my Mustang, but the Ecoboost in my F-150 is the superior truck engine.
@@FoDaddy And you'll have superior prices to pay for repairs down the road with that ecoboost engine too. No thanks....
@K.C. Marshall My own personal experience suggests otherwise. Until recently, I owned a '13 F150 Platinum with the Ecoboost motor. Drove it ca. 200k miles. The only major repairs were an evaporator coil and a fuel injector. Motor ran as smoothly on trade-in as the day I bought it new. And while I can say I truly loved driving my Ford, I'm no fan boy either. I traded on a 2022 GMC Sierra 1500 AT4 with the 6.2l V8. Basically, I wanted to own a (new) full size truck with a V8 before they go the way of the dinosaurs.
Davis is a legend
I'm always seeing many more Tahoes, Suburbans, Yukons, and Yukon XL's no matter where I go. I remember when the Expedition and Excursion were first introduced, I saw many Expeditions, but not many Excursions. I see many more previous generation Chevies and GMCs than Fords, with the same for Cadillac vs Lincoln.
Probably because the ratio is 3 to 1. Expedition is only one name. GM produces 3xs more with Yukon, Tahoe & Suburban but, there’s definitely more F-150s than Silverado and Sierras on the road.
Just driving my 2000 Expedition. 194,000 miles and counting. I love it. ❤❤❤
Like an old Crown Vic or Town car. Cannot kill it.
@@johngaudet6316 Apparently, the Ford Expedition has the 4.6 V8 like the Crown Victoria. Besides the 5.4 V8.
I'd love to pick one up but in the current climate, paying at or over MSRP, plus the risk your new truck sat in a parking lot for months waiting on a module, makes me want to wait. The battery fan recall is a great example of how these trucks suffered from parts shortages by Ford using other suppliers for that.
Otherwise to me this is a great all around truck. All covered storage, plenty of room to stretch out, room for dogs and gear, and good power. With tow package can do over 9k. Though it is a bit fancy for dirty work, but I've got the beater work truck I rebuilt for the nasty and really heavy stuff.
I really like these but not a fan of the car market these days...
Also I want to see if the updated cam phasers are reliable and also has Ford worked out the cracking valve covers on the 3.5.
With the size of Suburban, 6 sec 0-60, 100mph for 1/4 mile and 18mpg, that's very impressive
there is absolutely nothing impressive about 18mpg
Until you get in an start touching things...very cheap and flimsy...even the navigator leaves alot to be desired.....how do I know? I work for a ford dealership
@@Jag-leaper good job at advertising them. Lol
@@nashgover2095 won't be here much longer lol could care less about these poorly built crapwagons

OPTIONAL 1.0L 3 CYLINDER TURBO
I wish those rotary gear selectors would go away, I've never met anyone who likes them. Gimme a column shifter or a standard gear lever, every time.
All I think when I see an expedition: YAAAAAWWWWWNNNNN
What does a suburban do for you?
I bought a new 22 Limited and I absolutely love it and all the interior room I have. Excellent car!
There was a time when full sized SUVs couldn't reach 99mph at full chat.
99? Hell, I remember an old Suburban my auntie drove and that thing struggled to top 80. :)
Better than my Jeep though (2.8 Cherokee), wouldn't make it passed 73 because the death wobble would shake you off the road if you tried.
Most SUVs and pickups are governed around there anyway. 🤣
@@johngaudet6316 i remember in the late 90s the Suburban was governed to 98mph
Those Platinum's look fantastic
Ford should bring back the diesel Excursion...
It'd be good if they would 😑. For now I think the only hope is for Ford to remake that PowerStroke turbodiesel V-6 that they did for the F-150 🤷
Or the PowerStroke turbodiesel V-8 😌
That and I’d love to see them offer the hybrid engine you can get with the F-150 and the 7.2 kw onboard generator
@@Diddy_Do_It2037 mm... I'd settle for the 1996 Impala SS and Buick Roadmaster! 87 onlt had the 305 under the hood!
Crazy how the most powerful version of the twin turbo 3.6L v6 makes more power than the 7.2L 440 sixpak from the late 60s
Yes. I didn’t see that coming either.
Will die twice as quick too! (:
*3.5
Yeah but not as robust as the 440 Six Pack though.
I often wonder what vehicle "The OG" John Davis drives as his daily?
My favorite daily in the Delmarva area would be a Bentley convertible.
He seems like an Audi kinda guy
@@JS-yh7kw How can you tell?
And the Ford Recalls come as "Standard equipment"🤪😜
lol. Where in Chicago?
Despite your crown Vic profile pic my guess in reality you actually drive some Gm car
1:34 The 12 inch screen screams ugly. Seem like aftermarket tablet.
Cars shouldn’t cost this much.
This got me thinking… Expedition… Excursion… Shouldn’t they have an Exploration and an Escapation?
FOD EXPLODAH
Like the turbo V-6, but would like it in something smaller that could fit in my garage.
It’s pretty cold here in Ohio and I work in a warehouse. As such I wear pretty bulky gloves. I appreciate hard buttons for climate and radio functions; touchscreens don’t always interface well with bulky gloves. I shouldn’t have to talk to my car to turn on a heated seat and I’m in the age demographic that should embrace these electronics. But at least the standard screen has hard buttons still!
Other than that this s**ts on the Jeep Wago-hearse and I’m glad :)
What’s with the blocky Switches?
Poor Motorweek, why are you barely testing our 2022MY Expedition? Sign of the times I guess, due to delays.
Stealth Performance, please ... all black, night package if you have it.
9k+ towing but no tow mirrors to see around large trailers. Needs to be an option!
Unlike other Ford models the Expedition is a very reliable SUV. 17MPG is about as good as you get for a large truck based vehicle. Gives the Japanese vehicles a potent run for the money.
The Expedition is made in Louisville Kentucky.
yeah i always wondered why it was less popular than the tahoe/suburban.
@@dazednconfusedrn because it always had a feel that it was based on a work truck. No matter how you kitted it out it lacked a refinement but the Tahoe/Suburban felt cushy and was a road queen. They’ve vastly fixed that for the 4th Gen; this is the best version of itself. The only thing that would make it better is if Ford put the PowerBoost hybrid system under the hood finally
@@foxtrot685 ohhh that actually makes sense.
You didn't mention of the GMC Yukon with the Straight 6 Duramax Diesel that can go close to 30mpgs
But at the end of the day that overpriced EcoBoost SUV won't outlast my good ol 1996 Ford F150 with a 5.0L (302) Windsor V8 nor my 2011 Ford F150 with a 5.0L Coyote V8 by a large massive margin.
I hate to sound negative but that screen is so in your face and what a distraction and it looks like an afterthought like a Tesla to me that's a deal-breaker. And frankly that little engine that propels that is working so hard how many miles do you really think you're going to get out of it until it starts leaking oil or has major major internal problems after the warranty is expired.
Ford could care less...and will gladly sell you a new one at that point lol
I really don't see the difference in the screen size compared to almost every other SUV in the segment. It looks to to be the industry standard.
I can't for the life of me see why they couldn't motorized these screen for position, and for store away.
If we had designed the screen like that, it would have been cool if it was a removable complete tablet that you can watch movies on, and it would either hook onto the steering wheel or hang from the sun visor.
@@SledgeGE2 ikr many suvs have the same or similar layout
I wish these came with a 13 cylinder radial engine.

For me if they either added the 5.0L Coyote V8 or even the 7.3L Godzilla V8 in the Expedition and it was at a really good price then I would buy it in a heart beat.
So if you get one of the top trims with the upgraded twin turbo motor at that point what's the point of getting a Lincoln? 🤷🏾♂️

Keep in mind folks that the "base" non-fully-loaded models cost less than the Top-Of-The-Line models which are up there in price.
Whats with that expedition whistling every time it went by
It's Turbocharged
I doubt this overpriced Expedition will outlast my good ol' 2011 Ford F150 with a 5.0L Coyote V8 in it with 150,000 miles and still going strong.
it won't. Those turbos will be shot by 70k miles!
@user-cw9uu3xx9b Yep you got it brother
That's the thing....Ford should just put a 5.0 V8 in it, along with the 7.3 V8 as an option alongside with the V6 Turbocharged

@@CJColvin And you know it!
@charlesbakston7414 Yep I agree 100%
I have 2019 Expedition, and it has been knocked on the wood. It had cam phasers replaced under warranty. New battery and spark plugs around 50K miles. I would not buy a newer year with msrp or mark-up adjustment
No V8? That’s why I went with wagoneer.
Smart choice brother, is it the 5.7L Hemi V8 or the 6.4L Hemi V8?
I Love the tan interior color on that model.
Automobile manufacturers haven’t figured out yet that Everyone is sick and tired of Gloomy Grey or Boring Black standard interior colors that became popular in 1990.
Those colors look depressing, boring, drab, dated and old.
We Refuse to buy another vehicle with grey or black interior colors. 33 years we’ve had to put up with those awful colors.
My wife’s 19 Outback has Ivory interior while my 19 Forester has Brown leather interior.
Our 11 Ranger XLT super cab 4X4 had gloomy grey and boring black interior 🤮, so I had the it reupholstered in Red and Tan to match the custom 2 tone exterior paint colors.
What if Ford decided to revive the Super Duty-based Excursion in the near future?
1996 was the late-1990s? John is top notch, but that's an interesting perspective.
Cannot believe I've been watching John since 1981.
More like the mid 1990s and not to mention that I was born in 1996 as well.
@@CJColvin Exactly, I pointed that out because people are so quick to reference 1997 in relation to the Expedition intro, but in reality it came out in 1996 and got most of its early press coverage that year.
John or his script writer seem to be forgetting things or perhaps the latter wasn't of age in 1996.
@@jmin8400 Right
Ford just can't get it right. This truck NEEDS a V8. The turbo V6 just doesn't do it here. If I'm paying almost $65,000 for a truck, its gotta have a V8. You need those 2 extra cylinders for the longevity of the truck. The turbos are likely to go out at 50-100k, making this a hard sell for most folks. I suspect most of them will stick with XLT trim as well. The touch screen placement is ugly as usual, but at least it doesn't take away the physical buttons like the top trim does. Overall, I don't see this selling well. In a world full of 3rd row crossovers, it's hard to sell something that costs twice as much, and you get less for your money as a result.
Exactly mate, if it came with a 5.0L Coyote V8 or even the 7.3L Godzilla V8 and man I would definitely buy it in a heart beat my brother.
Wait for the hybrid.
Never understood.
Why? Why I can't get this SUV with the 5.0 coyote engine?
Why ???
That monster is a house!😂
Apparently these are full-size Body-on-frame SUVs(which apparently and obviously isn't new....been around for decades)
Great looking suv, dig the new front end
Wow its pricey but does not seem over priced.
That depends on the Trimline. The " base " non-fully-loaded models are less than that
MotorWeek has just become a lump of nothing. Boring cars all the time, doesn't even come on regularly here, it's always preempted by something. After 30+ years I'm over it.
