- In this how to draw fur tutorial, I demonstrate 4 fur drawing tips on a Labrador dogs face and go through the step by step process of drawing the fur. I give 4 tips to help you with drawing fur, as demonstrating the way that I draw fur. I cover the beginning phase of the drawing and how to sketch in faint fur to help be a guide for filling in fur, and helping with the lengthy drawing process that fur drawing can be, as well as some other tips!
Drawing fur can be a pain staking process, especially if you don't know what you're doing, so I am sharing with you a helpful tip of mine to help you with planning out the direction of the fur you draw, this really helped me with drawing realistic fur because it took some of the guess work out of the picture for me and allowed me to focus better with drawing fur.
Exactly how to draw fur doesn't have to be exact, as there are many ways to do it and learning to draw fur takes time, so all the practice you can get with trying different ways will only help you in your journey.

I’ve picked up a pencil after 20 years of not drawing and this has really helped motivated me. Thank you :)
You're very welcome, and thanks for watching. :)
thank you for your great tutorial video, Jessica.
b-b-b-bonus tip !
I realized that at the 4 second mark you 4 tips, what perfect timing.
Haha, yes it is funny that it lines up like that with the video!
I found your channel from Larry Williams' shout out video and I absolutely love your work! Your art looks like photographs. Thank you for the great tips! Liked and subscribed. :)

Very helpful, thanks
Great tutorial, Jessica! Thanks for sharing this with so many aspiring artists. You do great work!!
Thank you, I really appreciate you taking the time to watch my video. :)
Really great tips! I absolutely live by the last one you said, and it's what I always tell people when they ask for drawing advice. Literally every object in this world is just made of different shapes, and once you train your eye to see that, you can draw almost anything!
Thank you for watching! I agree completely, I know that a lot of people struggle with getting that thought in their heads. When I am working on art, I really don't ever think about what it is I am drawing. My mind is solely focused on the area's I am working on, and what shapes I am doing with values also in mind. It isn't until I take a break, look away for a few minutes, and then come back to the work, that I am looking to see if it looks like the subject it is supposed to be.
Yes, I totally agree!! It really takes practice to have the sort of perspective :)
It is a wonderful creation based on the rules of this composition, the fictional qualities of her beauty, which are showing an effectiveness.
Thank you, I greatly appreciate it.:)
Insanely good! Loving the timelapse!

Wow that looks so realistic :). Thanks for sharing your advice :). Keep on the fantastic work ;)
Thank you for watching, and appreciate the compliment!
Great tutorial Jessica and every tip is good advice :) The only tip I can add for drawing fur is to leave areas of lighter fur to give it a shine just like you've done in your Labrador drawing. For painting fur I tend to paint a dark background in first. Then paint in the hairs in white in the direction of growth. I then use many layers of thin washes over the top to gradually reach the colours that I'm after. This works for hair too :)
Thank you, David! I would have to say those are some great tips as well. :) I haven't done painting in a long time (10+ years).
It would be interesting to see what you could do with paint :)

GREAT Jess, you did great with the voice over to👍🏼😀😀👏🏻👏🏻💙
Thank you! I actually didn't do a voice-over, but wondered if I should have done one. haha Kinda hard to hear me talking while I am drawing, I edited that portion and tried to make it the loudest I could.
Jessica Matheney Fine Art I see , I can't talk and paint at the same time lol 😁 voice over better 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
That's kinda how I am, notice the difference between me talking to the camera and me talking while drawing. hahaha. I think I will be doing just voice-overs in the future.
Amazing work Jessica 👌👌👌

Thank you so much 😀
This was interesting, from a person who mainly draws too I've never tried mechanical pencils or to draw with different types or pencils on a same piece. I'm like a scavenger artist, I usually just draw with whatever material I can use haha. None the less, very interesting Jess, I usually do the same for fur and use lighter strokes to fill the white spots but with the same pencil. Though it doesn't look as nice as yours. :P
Thanks! :D I used to draw with only one pencil as well, having been drawing my entire life (even used to draw with pen a lot). I have found however, that I really like mechanical pencils because I can put a lot more detail into my work. The only downside with mechanical pencils is they have thin leads that break easy; can't use a softer lead because it will just break. The softest lead you can get for a mechanical pencil, is 4B, I use it a lot and don't have issues with breakage. So I use my Faber-Castell graphite pencil set, to accommodate the darker (softer) leads I need to use. They do stay nice and sharp for a while. I primarily use my 0.5mm and 0.3mm mechanical pencils, I haven't touched my 0.7mm in over a year. XD
I have found that, using multiple lead hardness's allows for more depth and realism in your work, looking at my older work, vs. the works I make now, I notice a difference.
Very informative! ;) i find fur to be really challanging to draw or paint, you made it seem much easier 😅
Thank you, glad to be of some help in what ways I can! :D
Awesome video! Found you through Larry! :)
Thank you! :D Larry is awesome!
He truly is... bringing all of us together. :)
Made me laugh :)
" ... you should thinking about, the fur as shapes, and it is just a hairy shape ... "
Thumbs up for the nice video.
Good, glad my humor got a laugh out of you. :)
Can you do a tutorial on how you drew the dog? Please 🙏 🙂
So informative!! Well done! Looks like he could just jump off the page!
Hahaha, thank you.
BIG LIKE ))) NEW FRIENDS ))GREAT
Thanks!
Lovely tutorial - I usually draw human faces but this seems technically more challenging
Thank you! Fur definitely has its challenges, but I think drawing human faces and skin has its challenges as well. Like for example, you need to have a gentle and steady hand to draw a human face, harsh strokes can harm the transition of skin details. :)
Hi Jessica, thanx for the awesome drawing of this beautiful dog. Is it a Labrador? He looked very much like the one we used to have ❤️. Unfortunately I can’t follow you on FB. Lots of greetz. 🦋
Yes, it is a labrador, they are great dogs. :) Thanks for watching my video.
My tip, draw every day. You will get better. Never give up. It is a journey.
Yes indeed, the more you draw, you can only get better!

You have so less no. Of subscribers over two years are u okay with it
I took a year off for personal reasons, so really I have only been growing my channel for a year. It takes a lot of work to grow a channel, and is a slow process. And it's especially slow when you have plenty of other responsibilities. So I actually feel pretty great with where my channel is at, after all, I'm not really after a number count of subscribers, I'm just here to offer what I can. :)
Vry nice thinking and ur channel will definitely be one of the best art channel after all ur drawing skills are superb🤩
