  • Maybe a bit more context to why I came to my conclusions. The past year I have lived in Arctic Norway in a very remote village, which is why moving from there to a 1.7 million city has been a huge step. I noticed a lot of negativity towards me on this video which surprised me as I tried to emphasize that this story about Auckland CBD (which I might not have been clear enough about) is completely based on my own experience, and therefore it is understandable that other people might experience it in another way. Not everybody likes or connects with the same kind of things which is something completely normal and humane, so please don't attack me for that. I love to be here on TH-cam to share stories and to hopefully inspire, creating a positive and meaningful community and connect with you guys. If you do not agree or like what I am saying that is no problem at all, but then please just click away without being horrible in the comment section. I am thankful for every one that is here and it was never my intention to spread any negativity, so I hope you won't too 💛

Yes Auckland is not the place for people who like isolation lol. I don't understand though why you would let it affect your mood so much when you know it is for such a short time. It is probably just the fact that you have to go to work. Anyone is going to love and look forward to holiday time more than work time.

I'm a former Aucklander who lives in the Nelson Tasman region and regularly goes to places like the Abel Tasman National Park and goes boating on the Nelson Lakes, etc. You would have to pay me a LOT of money to return to Auckland. Two aspects of Auckland are great though. Firstly, the Waitakere Ranges, and the West Coast beaches, both above and below the Manukau Harbour. Secondly, for those who have a larger launch or yacht, going on holiday out on the Hauraki Gulf, and staying at the various islands, etc. is just a wonderful experience. I'm sorry that you got some negative feedback, because you were just being honest about your feelings. Peace!

As a proud JAFA I'm surprised by how naive some people are. Auckland is a city, warts and all and Waiheke is a rural island. Any attempt to compare them and even get "butt hurt" is silly. Meanwhile, the Ukrainian people do have something to actually cry about. LOL

I agree that Auckland can be hard to adjust to if you have a spirit that prefers wild places. Don’t worry. Be patient. You are wise to want to appreciate what you can about where you are now, but once you start exploring, New Zealand is an awesome, magical place filled with wonder and beauty and kind people. Sadly, many parts of the north island have recently endured terrible weather events so you may be feeling the psychic and visual impact of that as you travel. You will probably enjoy the South Island a bit more as it is more temperate and less populated…but there is beauty everywhere if you can open to it. You will find the places where you can feel more yourself in New Zealand, it just may take a little more time to adjust. If you are sensitive to the magnetic pull of the northern hemisphere, it is sometimes quite disorienting and unsettling to switch to the south-pole magnetic orientation….I had a lot of trouble with that, but eventually you figure it out and learn to compensate. Enjoy your adventure, There is much magic there!

I totally LOVED Auckland! in fact, I stayed there for 10 days of my 5 week long holiday, back in Feb/March 1990-was 21 back then, time flies! I would very much like to return to NZ, and perhaps explore the South Island a bit more. I made it as far south as Picton, did some tramping in the Abel Tasman National Park-but I`ve learnt since then that there are other, far more beautiful national parks further south. Kia Ora from Oslo, Norway.

I would rather have contributors being open and real about their experiences.
It is good to see that she can reflect and know and want to make the most of her time in Auckland regardless.
She doesn't like Auckland, and that should be fine.
And surely, even if she doesn't like the whole of NZ at the end of her trip, I will remind myself not to be defensive. Maybe a little sad and sorry if she did not enjoy the country that I love, but at the end of the day, that has to be fine as well.

Auckland is a vile place. I go there for 1 week every summer to stay with a cousin and I always leave feeling jangled, out of sync and spiritually fractured. Each time I say to myself "never going there again!" LOL I live in a small rural town in Hawkes Bay, close to beaches, hiking, fishing and NO traffic lights! I also need nature and isolation which you will find south of Auckland. Don't judge the rest of NZ by Auckland. It's only 1 small part of our stunning country. 😍

Please don’t feel bad or self-conscious about disliking Auckland - you’re not alone.
I grew up in Auckland and never liked it much. It’s huge, it sprawls and has awful traffic. And yes, it’s humid in summer and clammy in winter - not cold enough for many frosts.
It’s good for sailing, if you’re into that. There are also some nice beaches on the west coast.
We now live in the central North Island, near Mt Ruapehu (which has just had its first snow for the year, in March). It’s very isolated and where we are, it’s 90 or more minutes’ drive to a big town or city.
Auckland isn’t representative of New Zealand. I’ve not been to Dunedin, but have been to most of the other cities and Auckland is one of the least appealing locations for me. (The one city I may dislike more is Rotorua.)
Living about an hour out of Auckland, in a small town or village, is much more pleasant - and if you need the city for something, it’s not too far away.
We’re very isolated here and although I love that, it’s also got its downside. Every location has its plusses and minuses, but I can honestly say that I hope never to live in that city again.
Head south and I’m sure you’ll feel more at home. Good luck!

I grew up in Auckland and I do not miss it. It has all the downsides of a small town (not much to do, everything closes early, lack of opportunities, disconnected from the world) and a big city (cost, traffic, people, arrorance). NZ is meant to be experienced in close proximity to nature.

Head south, head out of town, go wild and you will be amazed. Don't feel bad. Nobody likes living in or visiting Auckland! Make sure to get a Department of Conservation (DOC) membership. DOC camps are excellent quality and a bit more off the beaten track. NZMCA (NZ Motor Caravan Association) membership is useful and there are some good camps as well, but they can be quite busy.

Auckland is not just the CBD. Waiheke is part of Auckland, so is Piha, Maraitai, Waiwera…a huge area that includes nature that’s beautiful and majestic. Perhaps a busy work-focus life allows you little time to explore or appreciate it’s diversity. Even someone who’s working in the CBD of Christchurch or Dunedin would look forward to holidays and getting away from the mundane. Summer can be hot and sticky anywhere, great for a swim in the beautiful water. Don’t think so much about regrets, live the moment, see the sunrise, breathe and feel alive now.. all the best.

Did you visit the west coast of the north Island . West of Auckland, Piha , Kare Kare . I use to live in Auckland many years ago and would regularly visit the west coast of the Auckland area which is very rugged , wild and beautiful. I hope you did see this lovely treasure .
It had big waves and black ( or dark brown ) volcanic sand which could singe yourfeet if it got to hot . The veru first time I ever visited it I remember people sprinting across the sand , even quite elderly and I thought tgese kiwis are really fit the way they run around on the beach so quickly .
Then went I took off my flip flops on put my feet in the sand Wow thats hot , and then understood the olympian sprinters on the beach were just trying to avoid blisters 😂
The way was to get as close as possible to the water tgen take of the footwear a d dash for the water hoping the waves would not swallow up the flip flops. It was very very beautiful. You had to sain where the life guards were fir safety.
But on a late afternoon with the sunbeams passing through the waves which would collapse into milloions of bubbles , sometimes it felt like floating in a bath of sparkling champagne.
North and South island I understand the west coast is spectacular.
Also being the west , its the side the sun sets so it can have beautiful, gorgeous very colourful sunset .
A thing to look out for that yiu could occasionally see is the early evening of a beautiful sunset , if there were waves sometimes there was a spray off the wave which went upwards vertically and for brief seconds it could be possible to see rainbows flash theough the spray. It was very difficult to photograph since it would be over in a flash . I know this is not peculiar just to NZ . Anywhere where the sun goes down into the water if there are waves , one might be able to see flashes of rainbows.
I do really hope you found what you hooed to when you went to the south.
Yes Auckland is very urban but its goid to know where to go to to find some peace and solitude .
I wish you great joy and happiness in your continued adventures. 😊

Now that I'm living in England I am saving hard to get back to Auckland, then promptly to Invercargill ... my next move from there will be to a nice snug grave. Invercargill is described by some visitors as the anus of nowhere, for which I have to (and I do, trust me) pity them. Immensely.

Your statement is totally understandable, as Auckland is not for everyone's cup of a tea. Even many Kiwis don't like Auckland very much due to many reasons. It takes awhile to adjust being in Auckland. I was also finding it hard to adjust in Auckland, and took me 5 years finally to feel being part of the Auckland community. I was living in Wellington for over 15 years, I loved the multi culture City, and close knitted community, as small City as Wellington. I found people in Wellington are far nicer, smarter and more presentable, and kinder than Auckland people. Whereas Auckland, it is multicultural City but I found too many people also less kinder, selfish, ruthless, back-stabber, thieves, ignorant and arrogant. Also what I found in some little cities, like East and West Auckland which majority are Islanders are somewhat dirty, they tend to have a bad lazy habit in littering rubbish where ever they are, that's kind of what annoying me the most. Many times I literally had to pick up the left behind plastic cups, plastic bottles, burger casing and threw them in the rubbish from the public places such as in the Bus stations or Train stations. I don't understand how people are so dumb, and ignorant to just doing simple task like cleaning their own mess. I have nothing against the Islanders or being racist, because I have good amount of good Islander friends too, but to what I know and what I have experience to my own eyes, they are very dirty, very lazy and untidy. Personally I don't like Auckland that much myself if it's not for work. I like being in the nature more, but I am lucky enough to live in the nature woody area of Auckland. I love South Island better, since I've lived in few Cities there before, and visited all places down there.

You can have my house in the United States if you can arrange for me to move to New Zealand and live there the rest of my life.
I wouldn't complain about New Zealand. American cities have people living in tents on the sidewalk because the government takes bribes and allows corporations to pay employees less than it costs to rent the crappiest apartment in the city where they work. Monopolists want to pay less and raise prices until no one can afford to buy their products. Then they move to Dubai or New Zealand to get away from the hell they have created here. The South Island is mile’s better than the North and I grew up in the Waikato in an awesome Town called Te Aroha but I served my time in the Army in Burnham and it’s a thousand times better than the north 🔥

I couldn’t agree more about Auckland. I have lived there most of my life but now live overseas. I don’t miss Auckland at all. The only good aspect of the city is being out on the harbour.

The problem with Auckland is it's full of JAFA's. Hate the place along with that mini dorkland Queenstown.
I remember Queenstown from the 1960's. I hate what it has become.

Good video! I would never criticise you or anyone because you didn't find things favourable.
New Zealand's had terrible damage to it's wildlife of all sorts from the wholesale destruction from those settler days. A third of bush was destroyed by Maori and some extinctions , but European settlers did at least twice as much in terms of the forrest. Especially from the "New Zealand Company," a bunch of thugs from the UK. Also from introduced exotic pests of all sorts as well. A real assault.

As a Kiwi i can fully agree, Aucklands shit lol. Too many people, too much concrete, everyones in a hurry. Aucklands almost a different country to the rest of NZ. But imho the real NZ begins and ends at the bombay hills or Warkworth. Sorry Jaffas but its true =P

Well, people must open to criticism especially when it's based on fact. If you get offended to everything what people said, obviously you won't live that far, that's for sure.

Auckland is a very drab boring city. I never go into the city at all, no interest in it.
I’m a kiwi that was born in Pukekohe, have lived all over the South Island and upper half of the North Island.
Work, make friends, and explore out of Auckland on weekends and short holidays.

The biggest city in the country seems like a bad choice if you don't like cities you could have easily worked on a farm....and you obviously haven't seen Auckland and the comment below will tell you why.

      Hi OP.
Welcome to NZ. I hope most of your time here is wonderful.
You say you are travelling in a truck. I'm not sure what you mean by that description. I hope you have looked carefully at the rules regarding self containment, for toilets and waste-water, if you intend to freedom camp.
Most of us welcome overseas visitors but we can get pretty grumpy with anyone (including domestic travellers) who ignores these rules.
The South Island is spectacular but there are also myriad places of natural beauty in the North. You just have to look a little harder. Have fun!

@@justjane805 we are complying with the self-containment rules in our van (I called it a truck because it looks a bit like a mini -truck🙂). We are extreme nature people and live as much in harmony with our surroundings as possible ! 💚
