1. Pirlo/Alonso for regista/deep playing playmaker role 2. Inzhagi for always beating an offside trap 3. Ronaldinho for enganche role 4. Messi for false 10 5. CR7 for wide target men 6. Busquets for half-back role 7. Yaya Toure for the best roaming playmaker at his prime 8. Cafu for the perfect complete wing back role 9. Javier zanetti for being completely all rounded player etc......
EnderGaming Please, even jokes have to be legible. 😂😂😂😂. Makelele was great reader of the game and far more intelligent and was architect in a build up play rather than leg breaker Kante!!
Felaini redifined his postion. A destroyer midfeilder his ability to be a target man as a midfeilder, and disrupt play from so high up the pitch makes him the perfect anti footballer
Arthur Kariuki There was at least another player with those characteristics, and he was vital to both his club and national team. Although this might sound like a joke, one of the main reasons for which AC Milan and Italy could play with two or three technically skilled midfielders at a time was because of Gennaro Gattuso. His starting position was on the side, but generally he would cover any hole left by the other midfielders. You would often see him rushing around the pitch, pressing, marking and fighting for the ball, starting counterattacks and he would go on for the entire match. This allowed for Seedorf, Rui Costa/Rivaldo/Kakà and especially Pirlo in AC Milan to spare energy and to be ready for the attacking phase in case he or the defenders recovered the ball.
iBuckFush He was a badass!!!! He was a master at Penalties and commanding his team which was rare for keepers at that time. He will forever be the best keeper of the 20th century!!
Until 1995, only European players were eligible to win the Ballon D'or. Maradona and Pele never won it. Also Ronaldinho won 2 world player of the year awards and Zidane won 3. The fact they won a Ballon D'or each is irrelevant.
COD FAN if you can't understand that Yashin was in a different generation of football with hardly tactics developing at that time then you just don't understand why he was great
People will have a go at me but Giroud is one of the only strikers left who play like him...the "old" style, powerful headers who plays off the shoulder
Azpilicueta is one of the most underrated defenders and reminds me of Beckenbauer cos he is intellegent in defending, covers positions well and he's a hard tackler. Not to mention he can play anywhere in defence. He was a revelation on the right side of a 3 at the back.
Beckenbauer was the best. He gave birth to technically gifted CBs. Hansen, Agger and Van Dijk just to name a few (I know, all Liverpool. Didn't know about other clubs.) Maybe David Luiz?
I'd like to add another : 1) johan cruyff false 9 (a trequartista that doesn't have a striker in front of him) 2) tim cahill shadow striker (false 10) 3) vasyl turyanchyk the anchorman 4) gerd mueller the goal poacher 5) c.ronaldo the wide striker Of course some of them are not the inventor of the position, but they make it popular.
This type of videos are so monotone, it would be so much better if you showed videos of the players which you are talking about while you are talking about them
Cafu is the blue print for the modern day Full Back. I remember the days when a full back hardly past the half way line. In the modern game, a decent full back is imperative for any successful team.
People used to mock about Chelsea's irrational transfer decision such as signing of 30 years old Makélélé for £16 million. However, Claude had unleashed his full potential with the arrival of Mourinho in summer 2004
Yashin's biggest ever flaw was his delivery of the ball, just look at any of his recorded matches or scenes and you will know. He was the most brilliant goalkeeper ever but if you see his passing and kicking game you would think his teammates are invisible to his eyes.
I heard that when Perez sold Makalele and bought David Beckham, Zidane complained by saying: 'Why put another coat of gold paint on your car when it's just lost its engine.'
I think you missed CAFU as a special mention of the attacking wingback player. He was going back and forth in the field before it was even popular in the 90s. Just look at the world cup final with Italy; he was Marcelo way before Marcelo!
I always thought Robben cut in is so easy to predict but it’s cause he gains moementum and you don’t know when he cutting in and his left foot is so dangerous
Wow I really learned something today! They use the word Volante in Spanish or at least where I was born (El Salvador) referring to the CDM position. I never knew it was named because of that player. Crazy.
Two things: 1. Arséne Wenger is not a Footballer. So the list being "10 Footballers Who Redefined Their Position" is a bit of a misconception. Wenger may have changed the approach on a team regarding managing it but it's not a "Footballer" neither he had a Position in the field as the other members of the list did. 2. The newest player to redefine a position wasn't mentioned, alas, two of them. One being *Thomas Mueller* who has a position named by himself, the Raumdeuter. Is different from Arjen Robben, an Inside Forward or Inverted Winger, with a different kind of movement on the pitch covering spaces in the last third but not as the typicall Trequartista that plays in the middle but more flamboyant in the channels. Point missed FD. The later and most important IMO is *Marouane Fellaini*. Fellaini had a key role in the Europa League Final and played a new position, Advanced Anchor. In Portugal we use the word Trinco for a midfielder like Fernando (ManCity), a defensive anchor that has a mission to destroy the opponent offensive game. Fellaini is an offensive "Trinco", he played that role well in the Final by destroying the first step of construction in Ajax plan and for that reason Ajax didn't threaten ManUtd as they did against other opponents through their campaign. Also, Felllaini is a huge player that can play air balls really well and receive long passes from his defense, retain the ball and provide the ball to one of the two midfielders (Pogba, the Regista or Herrera, the box-to-box) or the two wingers. You had a chance to provide great knowledge of the game but once again you've missed it, FD.
Praveen Lakra Why? There is no "Pirlo" position nor "Ronaldo" position. This isn't about the best players, just players who redefined their positions. No offence to either of the two supremely talented players you mentioned, but they didn't change the way the game was played, they excelled in their already established positions.
Ogalbyer Monchalesk yeah but Ronaldo is redefining his new position as no.9 in his 30s than as a winger of his 20s and pirlo already showed the class of a great deep lying playmaker. You can be right. But one day at least Ronaldo will gain a respectable name for his position.
Praveen Lakra I don't think C Ronaldo deserves that, early in his career he was the "ultimate" classic winger, later he adopted Robben's playstyle. Now he became the "ultimate" nr 9. He is not defining any position he is just extremely good in well established roles on the football team. Pirlo is the same, he is a classic deep player maker or regista, he is arguably the best of his generation to getter with Xabi Alonso in that role.
Praveen you have no clue what you're talking about. Ronaldo redefines the way he play, he hasn't changed the way how strikers play. Pirlo as well, he may have dropped from a 10 role to a deep lying play maker, but this change simply made him adapt his style and flourish into his later years. When you think about a almost perfect DM, you think of makelele. When you think about a sweeper keeper you yhink of neuer. When you think about an winger that cuts in from the flanks you think of arjen robben. These are players that revolutionized their roles and made it an icon themselves. Atho when you think about a powerful striker, you might think about drogba terrorizing defenders, but he never changed the actual way how strikers were played, he was just very good at doing what he does... akin to ronaldo & argubly messi.
Ian Hope you are aware that there wasn't an English Club in 90s or till 2005 that did not play in a classic 4-4-2 flat formation. (At the max 4-4-1-1 or 4-1-4-1 variation). Wingmen were never used as goal scorers. It was Ronaldo who showed that wingers can score plenty of they play a little inside allowing fullbacks to join in an attack. A free flowing forward 3 men behind a striker interchanging their roles in a 4-2-3-1instead of conventional centre forward in a 4-4-1-1 formation was a typical United invention and more specifically Ronaldo redefined it.
Faiz Samsudin He was not. Matthias Sammer as an amazing player, but he was a CB, and he was not as good as Matthäus. Matthäus is in my opinion the joint best player, with Beckenbauer. Sammer not quite as good, but still one of the all time greats.
LoL, the inverted winger position was started to use by SAF in United with Giggs and Ronaldo. They swapped their sides many times. These days Robben was just a normal winger in chelsea. AND WHERE THE FUCK IS ROBERTO CARLOS?!
I'm a Barcelona fan but I do want to say something positive about Cristiano Ronaldo. I feel like he played a false winger role. Just think about it. They always had CR7 going on that wing but also playing through the middle at times and had Real Madrid striker take his place. So in a way he was a "false winger" same with Messi when he played out on the right.
...Sheva wasn't an out-and-out centre forward at Milan, Inzaghi was the "number 9". Sheva would drop deeper to get the ball and was more of a seconda punta.
Makalele redefining defensive midfield is a complete and utter myth. There were many great DMs before him, many at the same time as him and many after him. He's just one of many. And no, he wasn't the first CDM to be used as a focal point for counter attacks. Tigana was probably the first, heck, even Mathaus played like that at times before Makalele even made his debut. To say Makalele defined what it means to be a CDM is a huge disrespect to players like Keane, Vieira, Deschamps, Tigana, Souness, Effenberg, Van Der Elst, Benetti, Bremner, Clodoaldo, Zito, Van Hanegem, Simeone, Davids, Stiles, Robson, Szymaniak, Tardelli, Haan, Dunga, Redondo, Neeskens, Andrade, Rijkaard, Boszik... the list goes on. All started playing, or had their entire career completed before Makalele started playing and many of them had a much greater influence on the game than he did. End the Makalele myth ffs.
Sir Alex revolutionized club management from the side lines coaching NOT Wenger. Is this guy serious? SAF took over a team of drunks who were facing relegation and turned them into winners, didn't know Wenger had just 2 on his team. Wow!
Robben is the best right-winger with the worst right foot
Joao De Andrade And the best left foot
Richterin Barbara Salesch messi ?
Peter Enis STFU
Zoom Ninja why? I think its common knowledge that messi is a better player then robben?
Peter Enis better player doesn't mean better foot
1. Pirlo/Alonso for regista/deep playing playmaker role
2. Inzhagi for always beating an offside trap
3. Ronaldinho for enganche role
4. Messi for false 10
5. CR7 for wide target men
6. Busquets for half-back role
7. Yaya Toure for the best roaming playmaker at his prime
8. Cafu for the perfect complete wing back role
9. Javier zanetti for being completely all rounded player
etc......
Messi was a false 9, he played it like everyone else only miles better because he's Messi.
Alonso was no regista
Don't you mean false 9 for messi
noob
rizkyan17 Cruyff MADE the attacking midfielder and number 10
Kante is literally the next Makalele, both play a similar role, are small fast and French and play for Chelsea.
But Makalele was good.
EnderGaming Please, even jokes have to be legible. 😂😂😂😂. Makelele was great reader of the game and far more intelligent and was architect in a build up play rather than leg breaker Kante!!
Not anymore...
and black
James James Bet you feel silly now seeing how much of a beast he is.
this guy looks like jurgen klopps illegitimate son
In Brazil the "defensive midfielder" therm doesn't exist. All players for this position are called volantes instead, up to these days.
Felaini redifined his postion. A destroyer midfeilder his ability to be a target man as a midfeilder, and disrupt play from so high up the pitch makes him the perfect anti footballer
Arthur Kariuki exactly
Arthur Kariuki There was at least another player with those characteristics, and he was vital to both his club and national team. Although this might sound like a joke, one of the main reasons for which AC Milan and Italy could play with two or three technically skilled midfielders at a time was because of Gennaro Gattuso. Jacopo De Amicis thats true the list should have been longer as there are more players who have revolutionised there postions
Arthur Kariuki Gareth Bale went from a defender to a great striker
Vadi Bracaj I think you've missed the point mate
The downfall of Barcelona :
Lose neymar
Lose to Madrid
Buy Paulinho for £40 mill
Paul Pogba (Chelsea fan) The downfall of Chelsea
Lose to Arsenal on pens
Lose to Burnley
40 mil for drinkwater
Not saying we'll flop this season.
Eshanul ur teams shit so u can't say anything
Eshanul ummm I'm not man u fan but they look good to win or get 2nd on the premier legue
Paul Pogba yep pretty much
Is Arthur Black? You're not a Chelsea fan lmao
Lev Yashin sounds like a total badass. He's gonna be my first buy in FIFA 18
iBuckFush He was a badass!!!! He was a master at Penalties and commanding his team which was rare for keepers at that time. He will forever be the best keeper of the 20th century!!
Hernan Valdez u
How did you forget the Fellani role
Hahahha
Until 1995, only European players were eligible to win the Ballon D'or. Maradona and Pele never won it. Also Ronaldinho won 2 world player of the year awards and Zidane won 3. The fact they won a Ballon D'or each is irrelevant.
rickenfatania Yes because the Balon D'or was a European award you fucking idiot
rickenfatania Ronaldinho isn't European
it was a european award tho, look it up
randslam so? Hes justifying why it was easier for a european player to win the ballon dor before 1995
if Pele would have gotten to complete for Balloon De Or he would have won 9.... 1961 1963 1964 1965 1967 1968 1969 1970 1971....
Marcelo . Always will be remembered when you'll think about a full back not attacking
And Neymar redefined acting on the pitch
Legends say Makelele still looking for Riquelme
Ai don't understand
Lev yashin revolutionised the sweeper keeper but neuer did it better and didn't do it against farmers.
COD FAN Ignorant fan 😏
COD FAN You're obv very young
TBF that's not really an insult considering arguably the two best players in history are playing at the same time as Neuer.
Gyula Grosics was arguably the first sweeper keeper.
COD FAN if you can't understand that Yashin was in a different generation of football with hardly tactics developing at that time then you just don't understand why he was great
Cruyff maybe but he didn't just revolutionise his position, but rather football in general
Patrick Vieira: the guy that did it all without ever coming second in a duel.
This guy looks like Matt Stone the creator of South park
Ali Dia redefined what it meant to be a "professional" footballer.
Will there ever be a player who will have a position named after them again?!
Euro Football Daily the pogba role
officialnich so do i
Euro Football Daily neuer the sweeper keeper
People will have a go at me but Giroud is one of the only strikers left who play like him...the "old" style, powerful headers who plays off the shoulder
TH-cam Account #GLP lukaku , Carrol , kane , crouch , ibra
Niklas Bendtner: the cone position, where you just stand in the area doing absolutely nothing
Arbeloa defined that one; just ask Pique LOL
Riquelme should have been in the list he was probably the one who made the enganche role famous and more distinct from a trequartista
What does term meàn
Azpilicueta is one of the most underrated defenders and reminds me of Beckenbauer cos he is intellegent in defending, covers positions well and he's a hard tackler. Not to mention he can play anywhere in defence. He was a revelation on the right side of a 3 at the back.
so... where is thomas muller?
w keith He didn't revolutionize a role he invented one
Darragh Duffy what's that role dude .
Bear no one knows that's the trick
Raumdeter
w keith Not on the list
In Arsene We trust, there's only one arsene Wenger!
ProxyPlayR this guy hates Man United, because Sir Alex did those same things before Wenger.
What has wenger accomplished with the great roster that he has?
ProxyPlayR still don’t understand how he’s still manager.
Carlos Volante has a face of a comic book superhero
Beckenbauer was the best. He gave birth to technically gifted CBs. Hansen, Agger and Van Dijk just to name a few (I know, all Liverpool. Didn't know about other clubs.) Maybe David Luiz?
I'd like to add another :
1) johan cruyff false 9 (a trequartista that doesn't have a striker in front of him)
2) tim cahill shadow striker (false 10)
3) vasyl turyanchyk the anchorman
4) gerd mueller the goal poacher
5) c.ronaldo the wide striker
Of course some of them are not the inventor of the position, but they make it popular.
This type of videos are so monotone, it would be so much better if you showed videos of the players which you are talking about while you are talking about them
Busquets redefined football into diving and acting
90AlmostFamous you are confusing Busquets with Cristiano Ronaldo. CR7 will never be Figo, too selfish.
George Georgiev
still much better than Figo
Ahah so true
Kante>Busquets
Cafu is the blue print for the modern day Full Back. I remember the days when a full back hardly past the half way line. In the modern game, a decent full back is imperative for any successful team.
This guys eyebrows 😂😂😂😂
Jeremiah Ndhlovu LMAO
no mention of Francesco Baresi? he defined the defender role to the sweeper position.

I heard that when Perez sold Makalele and bought David Beckham, Zidane complained by saying: 'Why put another coat of gold paint on your car when it's just lost its engine.'
Florentino lost his rationality after he drove away Del Bosque and Hierro as they had a disagreement about Perez’s Galactico policy
I think n golo kante revolutionised his position a lot.
Casemiro revolutionised dirty fouls.
COD FAN I agree, especially on messi
COD FAN Kante is overrated
Casemiro will be better than Kante this season because Chelsea will struggle
Casemiro had barcelonas midfield in his pocket lmao
Caseimiro>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Kante
Messi. The man can literally play anywhere in attack and midfield and still score at least 40 a season
He can't play cdm
NO. He plays anything other than his position in Barca and flops hard. Look at him in the Argentina national team; nothing there.
this video was awesome man. cheers!
There should be at least 1 poll per video. I love them!
i love the gestures he makes with his face, brilliant.
9:40 It's NOT Ruby Costa, but RUI Costa! Great Video.... Thanks!
Makelele and kante chelsea legends💙💙🔵🔵
nice video mate !
Great video
Juninho: Best free kick taker of all time
I think you missed CAFU as a special mention of the attacking wingback player. He was going back and forth in the field before it was even popular in the 90s. Just look at the world cup final with Italy; he was Marcelo way before Marcelo!
Franz Bekenbaur is the second best defender in history, the best is Bobby Moore, he's the only defender to never receive a yellow or red card
In his 19 months as Real Madrid manager, Zinedine Zidane has won as many titles as he has lost games (7).
Yashin also had mad reflexes.
One of just 3 Keepers to be nominated for Ballon d'Or. I count 6. Lev Yashin, Dino Zoff, Ivo Viktor, Olli Kahn, Gianluigi Buffon and Manuel Neuer.
I hate ads that play midway through a great video
Nice ppt presentation. Kinda hope for the video when they're in action
What about Muller? He considers himself a space investigator. He finds the space and punishes you. The only space investigator I can think of
maldini is best defender ever
Dani alves, marcelo are both worth mentioning
Robben: You can predict him, but you can't stop him
I always thought Robben cut in is so easy to predict but it’s cause he gains moementum and you don’t know when he cutting in and his left foot is so dangerous
Wow I really learned something today! They use the word Volante in Spanish or at least where I was born (El Salvador) referring to the CDM position. I never knew it was named because of that player. Crazy.
Roberto Baggio is a national hero here in Brazil!!

Carlos Eduardo Saldanha Shut the fuck up.
WOLF HALEY Wow!! Such troll!! Many inteligence!! Wow!!
Maldini got snubbed
N'golo Kante or Makele?
If there was one coach who changed everything not just for one league but for the world soccer - Lobanovskiy
What about Thomas muller with the ramdauter CF role
Sick vid
I think Andrea Pirlo and Cristiano Ronaldo should have been included as well as.
Praveen Lakra Why? There is no "Pirlo" position nor "Ronaldo" position. This isn't about the best players, just players who redefined their positions. I dont know if that counts, but Lothar Matthäus. He was the last real sweeper, and in my opinion the best sweeper to ever play the game.
Matthias Sammer was just as good or even better... Shame he is frequently injured
Faiz Samsudin He was not. Matthias Sammer as an amazing player, but he was a CB, and he was not as good as Matthäus. Matthäus is in my opinion the joint best player, with Beckenbauer. Sammer not quite as good, but still one of the all time greats.
Why do you compare Figo with Robben, one of them being a midfielder and the other being a winger?
Baresi played similar to beckenbauer which is why he was known as Kaiser Franz
Gianni Rivera, a complete attacking midfielder.
In my opinion who redefined the "fantasista" was Maradona...
Robben set the blueprint for Ronaldo...behave
Where is makaleles legend card fifa?
I thought Gyula Grosics was the first sweeper-keeper?
These 10 redefined their positions, yet Cruyff redefined football as a whole :D
LoL, the inverted winger position was started to use by SAF in United with Giggs and Ronaldo.
They swapped their sides many times.
These days Robben was just a normal winger in chelsea.
AND WHERE THE FUCK IS ROBERTO CARLOS?!
I really wish I had lived in the time of Beckenbauer. He was phenomenal
Robben rarely does the same move twice in a row...he knows what he is doing. Quute the opposite of predictable
I would gladly say Miroslav Klose defined the poacher role in football, especially in the world cup
I still remember the iconic screams from makelelé scoring goals
I'm surprised that you didn't put Wenger one place lower - on 4th.
I'm a Barcelona fan but I do want to say something positive about Cristiano Ronaldo. I feel like he played a false winger role. Just think about it. They always had CR7 going on that wing but also playing through the middle at times and had Real Madrid striker take his place. And Ronaldinho didn't redefine a position but redefined football as a whole !
7:13 - also adolfo pedenera and alfredo di stefano
The Andrea Pirlo role is surely that one of nowadays.
Love the Boston shirt! BOSTON STRONG!
Boston, Mass baby! love the shirt
Beckenbauer was my hero growing up and I was born in 1994 😂
Facchetti's pronunciation is Faketti. in italian ch- is like K
The hell the dude puts fachetti in but doesn't include nilton santos, who literally did the same tbing a decade earlier and won 2 WCs...
Makalele redefining defensive midfield is a complete and utter myth. There were many great DMs before him, many at the same time as him and many after him. He's just one of many. well, at least its not zak
I saw kante and casemiro in the thumbnail thats why i clicked on it..damn ive been baited..
Didn't Lothar Matthus win a Balloon d'or while playing a sweeper??
