You guys loved it when I analyzed Jantschke's play against FC Bayern Munich last week as an example to show you how I analyze and learn from professional soccer players at the highest level. Well, I am making this into a new series.
In this video, I sit down and watch 15 minutes of the FC Barcelona vs. Espanyol game and solely focus on Sergio Busquets. I track his every move and analyze what makes him a world class defensive central midfielder.

Busquets is a genius, one can't possibly just play like him. He's a rare type of CDMs, and for me he's the best CDM ever.

This positional awareness comes after thousands of hours on the pitch. He's seen these different scenarios so many times throughout the years he can predict where the players are at all times. That is the Barca way of playing. They have been training their players from a young age at La Masia.
Actually the greatest aspect of Busquets playing style is his mastery of basics in football and the ability to get out of any kinds of pressure. He can't be pressured.🙌🏻

The best CDM i ever see...for barca and spain. How important he is. Till today, no one can replace in both squad.
Greatest centeral defensive midfielder of all time. Although he doesn't defend like Makelele or Yaya Toure or Davids/Seedorf, He uses his brain to retain possession of the ball, or let opponents make mistakes. He is a genius. If you have played football you'll know how amazing Busquets is. His off the ball movement is a textbook example for all the youngsters wanting to play football. No matter the position you play in, Busquets/Xavi/Iniesta/Messi/Zidane and other greatest players have this thing in common, a footballing brain.
I have always talked about how Sergio BUSQUETS's role is so underrated by people..I'm glad people now know how important he is to the team.Complex Simplicity, very professional indeed.
What's absolutely crazy is that you don't even notice the small touches until all of a sudden there's 3 v 2 or 2 v 1 advantage. It's like a good musician improvising - effortless but so damn hard to do
Great analyse, i have a big game tomorrow where i play in the CAM position( I am normally a winger) so this helps me a lot! What i noticed was that he always knows what going on in the game and always looking behind his shoulder. this is going to help me a lot in my new position
Busquets & Marco Verratti are my favorite players! This video is much appreciated 🙏🏽⚽️️ the reason these guys are my favorite is because of their physical appearance (they aren't big). They embody what I think football/soccer truly is, a game played with the mind & then the body.

I think it would be a great idea to have one of your teammate, who plays that position, to be guest for these positions specific analysis.
He is the best holding mid ever since Pirlo. I can't imagine yet someone replace him in Barca.
pirlo is a maestro himself but you can clearly watch how different busquets is theres no defensive midfielder like him. Probably the best DM ever!

So nice to see to read that Busquets is actually appreciate it by so many people. My son decided to play his position in club and I will be honest I have not been thrilled because I don't feel that his position is valued. My son's strengths are his touch, intelligence, vision and understanding of the game. He opens himself continuously looking for open spaces. I do wonder would Busquets had an easy time finding a college in the US who would appreciate the simplicity of passes, vision etc. I do wonder.
It's probably actually easier to get into bigger teams if you play in less popular positions like this. For example, if you go to a trial and you are a right midfielder or right sided striker, probably almost 50% of the players at the trial want to play in those positions. However, if you are left back, or a defensive midfielder, then you will face far less competition for a place in any team. I don't know about US colleges though, but if they don't appreciate players like Busquets, then they just don't know football.

I appreciate your vids... It’s easier to play so when you understand the players you have around you. He’s gifted know doubt, reads the game well, good first touch, good balance, knows how to position himself. Guess these qualities makes up for the lack of speed, finding that space to create, intercept and make passes.
Many people don't realise his tactical intelligence and technique are so good and unique that these overtake other CDM's greater physical conditions or far kick power. His skills dominate matches, build the greatest teams (all winners - Barca and Spain). Just like that. Simply the best CDM in history.
Great coherent analysis
Wonderful! It's just breathtaking how Busquets simply refuses to do any but these most basic things of football. Look, move just a couple of steps, control the ball, pass, look again, reposition, repeat, beautifully efficient. Of course, his technical skillset makes it even easier for him, too, especially under pressure, but still he doesn't let himself get carried away like many others do. He just sticks to his mantra, which makes his game even more impressive.

& you guys, these are analysis for each position, and how to play them properly! Not to learn how to play like Neymar, Messi, CR7 or cavani etc! Bc every single one of them! Have their own style and way to play their position! Don’t copy them! Find your own style and learn how to play your position properly, and you’ll be a beast!

Great analysis especially how Busquests play off the ball to create space and passing lanes. A longer video would have been useful as I think there is a lot more to learn. E.g I would have liked to hear more how he transition between defense and attack and see examples, how he is able to poach the ball from the feet of attackers, and how he draws opposition to create space

I've always said busquets is the best cdm to ever play. If you truly understand football then you will know that the simplicity in his play is what makes him the best. 90% of the time he plays the best possible pass.

He doesn't play a position, he is too good, you can't learn what he does
Messi's play is unpredictable which is why he is the best, he can drop deep and create chances, he can dribble at defenders, make runs behind the defence, pretty much a false 9 role and he is almost impossible to man mark.

Busquets gets so much attention as the pivot for the barcelona midfield. His defensive reliability has stepped up a lot from the years he was known as a flopping prodigy. He does a fantastic job flipping sides of the field and has been through the tiki-taka era through MSN.
