Melanie took a good Stones song, and knocked it out of the park with her unique vocals. She's an under-rated treasure.

One of the Stones best songs. Melanie, as usual, is simply wonderful. Quiet and quavery one moment, blows the roof off the place the next.

Melanie also did a version of Bob Dylan's "Mr. Tambourine man"" and when Dylan heard it for the first time, he played it again and again and again, and then gave Melanie a call and told her "her version was the best he ever heard and told her she had an incredible beautiful unique voice, like "nothing he ever heard before".. You might want to give a listen to Melanie's version of "Mr. Tambourine man". Though Melanie wrote and sang almost all of her own songs through the years, she did a few covers of others.

    It's the Stones for me.
Because its a personal song, it's about Linda Keith, a girlfriend of Keith's, and the first woman to break his heart. She left him for Jimi Hendrix( taking with her a tape of, Hey Joe)
Keith usually contributes a line or two at least to most Stones songs, but i think more of the lyrics are his than Mick's on this one.
When i was a kid, my dad had a Melanie album that had both this and Brand New Key, it went over my head then, i just thought it was weird. She's more interesting these days.

@@thegonz9I've read that before. Personally, I don't think all the lines sound like Keith, some sound like Jagger to me.
In Keiths book he mentions there's only one Stones song that Jagger wrote on his own, and it's not Ruby Tuesday.

The Stones version is from 1966 and typical of British bands of the time. Melanie's version is from about four years later when styles had changed somewhat and I think this is a more vulnerable and powerful take on the song

So much emotion in Melanie's voice. She totally makes her this song and put it on another level. Don't find anything odd or weird in her way to sing. It's just that she has influences from European singers (such as Edith Piaf or Lotte Lenya) and also Billie Holiday. I'm a bit deceived Cynthia was not so positive about her. Last, the text, so marked by the misogynistic point of view of Jagger, becomes empathic and affectionate in Melanie's version. Last, Melanie must not be reduced to her 3 main hits. She has done so many greats songs and good albums in her long career.

The Stones are the greatest Rock & Roll band in the world, Melanie wins this however.
It's a bit like Stones v's Marianne faithful, her version of Sister Morphine is the best, it helps that it's her own song.

As someone who grew up in the 60s/70s I was lucky enough to be entertained by the best musical era in history. No computers, no gimics, just pure musical talent. Every day a new song, a new sound from such a huge variety of talented artists.

Melanie has a very unique strong voice, her singing range is astounding and her style is very unique, there is no one else like her,. which is why I love Melanie's version best, she always sings with such emotion and feeling. She has written and sung over 500 wonderful songs and has many many albums. I feel she has never gotten the credit she deserved and that there is a HUGE library of her songs and music to "discover". Sadly many have not experienced it but hopefully one day they will.

I'd known Melanie's version looong before the Stones' original: When I was 9 (in '79), one of my Aunts had given me a various artists compilation cassette tape titled 'First Love', and 'Ruby Tuesday' was its closing song. When I heard the Stones' original for the first time many years later, it just sounded 'wrong' to me at first, because I'd been so used to Melanie's version 😅 I do like _both_ versions now, but for me, Melanie beats the Stones by a nose 😊 There were some other good songson that tape, too, including 'My Lady D'Arbanville' by Cat Stevens, 'Alone Again, Naturally' by Gilbert O'Sullivan and 'Close To You' by The Carpenters 🙂

The difference is perspective.. The Stones version was a wistful "I'm sad my ex left", but oh well life goes on. Melanie's version was WHY she HAD to leave. Why life couldn't go on. It has so much more power. Mick has songs with that intensity, but this wasn't one

Without question The Rolling Stones . It’s their song and it’s smooth, Melanie version is good but her voice is screeching loud, as opposed to Mick and Keiths warm vocals. She does sound a little bit like Marianne Faithful. The cello you are hearing is played by Keith and Bill Wyman both struggling to play it. The Flute is Brian Jones. The song was released in 1967 on the Between The Buttons album, right before psychedelic. The Stones version went to #1!

The Stones' musical accompaniment was straightforward and repetitive. It seemed the vocals were sung by a band who were bored out of their brains. Melanie was enthusiastic, and genuinely enjoyed singing it. The orchestral background punctuated the vocals well. I think Ms Safka did a MUCH better job at singing "Ruby Tuesday".

The fourth US #1 hit for the Rolling Stones, this ballad is about a groupie. It may have been inspired by Linda Keith, who was Keith Richards' girlfriend. Keith Richards said of "Ruby Tuesday": "That's one of those things - some chick you've broken up with. And all you've got left is the piano and the guitar and a pair of panties. And it's goodbye you know. Peace out.

Released in 1966 during the Stones brief flirtation with psychedelia under the influence of the Beatles, it is a fav song of mine... Indeed, this short-lived phase before returning to blues-rock, it's the only time period where I really liked the band! btw, that cello is amazing (as is the recorder!), BUT the buzzing got a tad out of control on your vid. I don't know if you have the bass setting to high, or if a "remaster" of the song went too far, but I've never heard that glitch in the studio version before.
No comparison imo with Melanie's rather screechy version.

you are so wrong, but that's ok. Melanie recorded some covers, but also has 30+ albums of mostly original music. On par with the Stones, whom from the beginning covered and had hits with other people's songs (Chuck Berry, the Crickets, Robert Johnson, etc.). Good music is transcendental, it's all about how we relate and respond. I know a lot of people who are put off by her voice (like Geddy Lee of Rush), but there is a range and power there that Mick never displayed in his vocals. From a whisper to a wail in a heartbeat. Better or worse? That's a personal choice and ultimately irrelevant. Whatever you resonate with and gets you thru the day. I am only sad because there is a HUGE catalog of potential life changing music being prejudicially discounted. But as before, that's ok. Plenty of Stones to be replayed. In regards to people preferring her beauty over Jagger's, well yeah, I'd rather look at her. In response, an album by Melanie "Phonogenic: Not just a pretty face" (The album cover was the polar opposite of the Stone's original "Her Satanic Majesties Requests", being just black and white lettering, with no photo at all). BTW, I have every US Stones LP from the beginning to Voodoo Lounge, and a few bootlegs as well. I own all the Melanie lps (minus some posthumous ones). I love them all, but at my age I find I resonate much more with Melanie, and to be honest, I always did. Must be the hippie in me.

I know both versions very well, but Melanie's version is too much of it's time.. Sounds too early 70's with all the production and performance trappings. Stones flows a little smoother in my opinion.

I heard her because my parents played her records, and ''Brand New Key'' was a song I loved when I was about 4 or 5. She has another hit called ''Lay Down (Candles In The Rain)''. If you explore her stuff, you'll find some choice cuts, but there's also a few hippy dippy songs which may not be all that great to listen to now-a-days. By the way, how are you?

@liveitup67 Hello lovely. I'm fine, thank you. How are you?
I don't know if it's before my time, I was a mid sixties baby and was always exposed to music. Even my dad listened to the rock n roll greats, whereas my mum was more into the Motown stuff. Radio 1 was usually on in the house, Andy I seemed to know all the hits and even felt some kind of connection to the DJ's .
I'm sure the Brits will correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't know if Melanie was popular here in the sixties and seventies.

@@colrhodes377 I was born in 1967. So I guess you're a couple of years older than me? Brand New Key reached # 4 in the UK while Ruby Tuesday reached # 9. I'm surprised ''Lay Down'' didn't chart in the UK. It was a pretty big hit in Australia and America.
I'm doing okay. Not much to report. You got anything to report? lol

      @@liveitup67 No, nothing worth reporting.
1966 for me. That gave us both the best music as we were growing up

Jagger once told Melanie that her version was much better than his. Melanie is the best and she is so underrated. Her version of the stones Wild Horses is great too.
