    I have the Sterling version of this. Love the variation in tone, as well as the unique Stingray-ness of the sound.

    Man! You need way more subscribers! I’m trying to make a decision on this bass, no body on TH-cam explained this bass like you in such a simplistic way! Good on you! I’m looking to get the 5 string version for more versatility 👊🏼

      Update , I got the Stingray 5 , but it had too much of that high end tone, it’s a Slap/Funk machine, I returned it , got an American ultra JB V , very happy now , it Has that warm classic tone I was looking for.

    Very well put together and accurate review of this superb bass! The only thing missing is the great variety you can add to those tones with the EQ knobs. I love the slap sound in the outer coil position but you’re right, it’s not an ideal setup if that’s a big part of your playing style. Not a problem at all for me and well worth the trade off if you want to use a single bass to cover every sound. Also the headroom on that 18v preamp is excellent. Love this bass!

    Great walk through on capabilities! I just modified (Seymour Duncan SMB-4A alnico and 4D ceramic pickups) Enjoyed and subscribed.

      Agreed. I have a 2018 CLF L2000 and preferred it to the Stingray.

    Dope HH in the review. I have a Single H Special in Burnt Apple Red and maple fretboard. I’m constantly getting compliments on my tone and how “In your chest” the Ampeg SVT makes it roar but i definitely hear some positive impacts that Rosewood fretboard is making. My next bass will be a Ray, hopefully with an ebony fretboard.
    I was in love with my 77’ Jazz Re-Issue, Fender MIM Active Jazz Special and Active PBass Special and while they were GREAT basses (the 77 was the hardest to let go of) once I got my Single H Stingray Special the response my band had during those initial reggae sessions made me not want to pick up the others.
    Once you’re playing a Stingray Special and get used to the neck, tone and feel you will never want to turn to another bass live. I just wanna be felt. The Stingray Special makes the cones in my cabs plugged into the SVT give out serious “punch you in the gut” bass waves.

      Agreed: there is a baking period per player....especially coming off Jazz basses

    I love the scooped sound of position 2. I have a '97 stingray in ghost pepper.

  • @Cap683

    I set my HH on the third position (the two humbuckers mixed in parallel.) The bass has a warmer and less aggressive tone making a bit more in line with other active basses. I think that it sits well in the mix when playing with others but I can dig in with my fingers to bring the bass forward if called for.

    Great video. Is it possible to lower the neck pickup enough to make the bass more slappable?

    So with the bridge pickup soloed does it give a true OG stingray tone? Some reviews I've seen say it doesn't quite nail the tone of the 4H single pickup model.

    • @Rib13Bass
      @Rib13Bass  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      This is going to depend on the power of the microscope you are using. Under a powerful microscope, its a little different: @BobBlackBass and I did an A/B comparison with the same strings and same string age. We also compared an Ibanez ATK. Oddly, the ATK and Single H were almost identical......under a less powerful microscope and just trying to get a classic Stingray thing: yes, the soloed bridge does that....Im hoping this makes sense

  • @natron1908
    @natron1908 ปีที่แล้ว

    It sounds good when you slapped it, too bad it's not comfortable for that, but that's how you can justify having more than one bass! Using fingers, it has a nice piano like tone.

    What a coincidence that you made a Stingray review, because i'm currently very much interested in them. I even looked into your channel recently to look if there's already a video available about this bass. Personally i feel like the Stingray has already enough versatility even with just one pickup. Yes, i heard many good things about G&L L-2000 and some even claim it to be the holy grail and the perfection of Leo. Never played one but just by looking at them they lack charisma and charme. The headstock and body are very uninspired and it looks like not much of an upgrade.

    • @Rib13Bass
      @Rib13Bass  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have a G&L ASAT which (as I'm sure you already know) is a L2K with a telecaster body....that bass is now retired but it has been Number 1 for decades. I prefer it to my Stingray HH ( especially as it's very slap friendly) but don't get me wrong, I like what my Stingray HH does and it is certainly a keeper.....I would have preferred the single pickup model, tho

    I love the Stingray bass. Not being a bass player myself, it never occurred to me about the neck humbucker being in the way for slapping. That IS a bummer. Davie504 would NOT approve. 😂 Dave LaRue (one of my favorites bass players) uses their Bongo bass. I believe that model also has an HS configuration option. Have you ever played the Bongo bass?

    • @Rib13Bass
      @Rib13Bass  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Normal single pickup Stingrays are super slap friendly ( and really what I should have bought when I purchased this one)......Bongos are more slap friendly than a Stingray HH but not by much....Happy New Year brother

    It's too bad they don't design a drop down trigger that drops the neck pickup down half inch out of the way, then flick it back up when ya want it. (hmmmmm.....I wouldn't mind a financial cut, from this idea Mr. Ball) ;)
