    I'm building a city right now. What I have found is that if you want an interesting road layout, start of with a couple of small towns and link them up with main roads. As your city grows, keep these main roads clear of any buildings. You can do that by fencing them off. That really seems to have done wonders for traffic. And then, when your 5 towns become one city, I put my CBD in the middle, and where the grids clash, you get to come up with fascinating solutions.

      I keep starting over in cities skylines testing out new road layouts and grid designs. Over and over. :)
      I'm kind of looking for some repeatable pattern, that looks random, but isn't. Has a decent balance of buildings and open spaces for parks and services etc. and how to connect it to main roads.
      Kind of my great white whale to chase now. :D
      ...
      Anyways, more on topic to your idea I once started a map completely unlocked, deleted all high ways and rail roads and slowly started filling it in, with how I imagined the area would have developed over time.
      It was a sort of mental exercise.
      External connections would loosely represent ancient trading routes through the area.
      Protected natural harbors on the coast would become small fishing villages or trade harbors.
      Flat farmland would become farming villages.
      Villages around forest industry or ore.
      Roads would link the towns up and villages would spring up at cross roads servicing travelers.
      Etc.
      Of course this requires infinite money and everything unlocked, but there's a mod to make maps of the roads and trains and stuff in the game I think, so maybe that was an idea to make a historical run of cities skylines?

      I have 350+ hours in Cities Skylines and so I know how the game works. But this was a very condensed 20 minutes that was follow-able and clearly articulated exactly what needed to be considered at each stage of the city development. There were no mods, no gimmicks and it wasn't 45 minutes or an hour - just a very sweet 20 minutes and *presto* a viable city. I hope you continue because I'd like to see what you're going to do about that traffic junction to the highway and that street it dumps on, where/how you place more education and configuring mass transit and pedestrian paths to prep for city growth. But again, the amount of information conveyed and the length was perfect.

    • @LeeHawkinsPhoto
      @LeeHawkinsPhoto  ปีที่แล้ว

      This guide is more for lightly experienced players…if you’ve played the game enough to go bankrupt or get buried in traffic, then you’re at the level where this will really really help you. If you’re not there yet, either check out my more in-depth series, _More Money Less Traffic,_ or start building, get frustrated, and then come back and watch this video-it’ll make a lot more sense.

    • @LeeHawkinsPhoto
      @LeeHawkinsPhoto  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Have you seen More Money Less Traffic? I know Series 2 is still in the process of being made, but it really digs in on a lot of beginner stuff in detail while still hopefully being quite entertaining 😁
      I also have a series called Reddington, which is a playthrough with mods, as well as the original More Money Less Traffic series where I build a full city of over 80k in 5 episodes, but in longer episodes than Quick Metropolis.
      Let me know if these help you out…if you feel like something’s missing that you need, I’d love to hear about it…I love new video ideas like this so I can help new players succeed faster than I did!

    This is the best CS start guide ever! I always get stumped due to money, and then getting multiple challenges too quick at the start, this video is really helpful and teaches how to pace the development and layout. Very well done.
    Only thing I want to point out - I was confused when you said "Alternate Direct Route" - I thought you were talking about one way streets running in opposite direction. Then I realized you meant "Alternative" but it took a while to understand that.

    • @LeeHawkinsPhoto
      @LeeHawkinsPhoto  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks so much! I'm glad you found it helpful! I have a more indepth series called _More Money Less Traffic_ that goes more deeply into all of this. You might find that useful too!
      BTW...alternative and alternate can have the same usage as adjectives in English. It's pronounced differently as an adjective "ALL-tur-net" than when it's used as a verb "ALL-tur-nayt". The basic idea is just that you want multiple ways to do the same thing...especially when you have too much traffic somewhere. It can really take the pressure off.

    This was the first video I watched from this channel, and the one that made me subscribe... about 24 hours ago. As I commented on another video, I've recently gotten back into this game after a few years away, in part due to the CS2 announcement... and this video is an excellent refresher, so much so that I've now watched it twice... and I'll probably watch it a third time before I start my city over from scratch. The city I'm currently building is using the same map, but I'm having traffic flow and cash flow issues, and this video points out several easy fixes that I'd missed in my current build. I really do like this map; it's probably my first choice out of all of the original and DLC maps, and I have all of the core gameplay DLC packs (picked them all up on Steam's recent sale).
