  • Gelcoat polishing and getting ready for the new season. Fitting a new winch to the trailer to stay safe on the slipway. Having the small Orkney Coastliner at home means I can easily keep on top of maintenance jobs in the comfort of the garage out of the inclement weather.
    Hope you enjoy this the tenth video in the small fishing boat series. Do take a look at the playlist to see other episodes.
    Stay safe out on the water, tight lines from me and a tail wag from Dee.

    There's something very satisfying to get a good shine on 30+ year old gelcoat. Let me know in the comments what you think of the results.

      Agreed, also knowledge of your equipment helps when you have an issue on the water.

      Thanks 👍. I think you'll agree that old winch was temperamental. High time it was changed.

    The joys of winter projects! You're reminding me of all the things i've forgotten to do on Lulu! Especially a new winch strap. Mine folds over all the time when winching on, which I think means time for a new one! That gelcoat came up nice. THe red must look great in the sun (when you actually see it!!!)

      Thanks. I have to admit I'm very lucky being able to just go into the garage and potter around doing these jobs. It would be a lot less appealing if I had to travel to a boat yard or something. Given the age of the boat it has polished up well. Not too many red Orkneys around so she stands out a bit.

      @@anotherangleUK Yes I agree. Expensive too. I pay £75 per month for 4-5 months which adds up. I'm clearing the side of my house this spring, moving the shed and widening the gate!! There should be some room for the boat then, maybe another one!!! Will also be much easier to trailer her places. At the moment I have to get her off her mooring, put her on the trailer, do a cruise, then do the reverse which is exhausting when you get home at 2AM!!!
      Yes love the red boat, very '80s! I love it, reminds me of a Red Porsche Carrera for some reason!!

    In the EU three colored single navigation light is for small sailing vessel under sail, you should either attach a white light on top and 2color light in the front or one color each side. You may check your laws. But I agree one lamp for all comes handy

    • @anotherangleUK
      @anotherangleUK  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for sharing. When it comes time to replace the light I’ll be looking at the options. Given the cracks caused by the vibrations I expect that won’t be long.

      Dee keeps an eye on the campervan - any signs of fishing gear going in there and she parks herself in the passenger seat 😁

      @anotherangleUK  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks Tommo, you'll be needing decent weather for outside jobs. Do you use an orbital polisher - you've lot more area to polish than mine?

      @@anotherangleUK it's meant to be sunny down here tomorrow, I'm even thinking of going out in the boat rather than cleaning!
      I do mine by hand, but I did do it with an electric polisher when I first got it.
      However it's now more to maintain it , I run a polish over it and then a ceramic wax over the top, that keeps it good for at least a year

    Think you put spacer for winch handle on wrong way round, lugs should face out, haven't watched all video yet to see if you change it round 😊 at 10.17, you can also run strap off botton of drum to be closer in angle to eye on boat

    • @anotherangleUK
      @anotherangleUK  11 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi thanks for commenting. The old handle had the lugs facing out (6.07) but the instructions for the new winch stated lugs in (10.17). I'd not thought about running the strap off bottom of the drum. I'll take another look to see which way works best for me.

    Hi phil, whats the over all length of the outfit? Prop to trailer hitch? Im wondering for when i buy my own coastliner if one would fit in my garage…. And is that trailer for a coastliner?

    • @anotherangleUK
      @anotherangleUK  11 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Jamie, my Coastliner on her trailer measures 18 feet from hitch to prop. The trailer is an original Snipe brand that Orkney supplied all those years ago. A more modern trailer may be a bit longer so worth checking.
      In the past with different boats I have had to remove the winch post and pushed the boat further up the trailer to the hitch to fit them in the garage I had at the time. That was a bit of a faff but worked okay.
      Any other question do just ask and I'll do my best to answer them. Phil
