First Night Living in my Car (Sleeping at Walmart)

  • Like so many others, I have run into some unfortunate financial circumstances lately, mainly due to the COVID-19 situation we are faced with. This has forced me to take the leap and move into my car, something that I had always been curious to try ever since first getting into car camping.
This is my first official night in the bizarre, yet exciting journey that I am now embarking on. I'm optimistic that things will go well, and I'm enthusiastic at the prospect of living in an unconventional way while challenging the social norms/standards. Make sure to follow along!
For those who are curious, this is a 1991 Toyota 4runner.

Was homeless & slept in a shared office.
    Gym membership - free showers.
    Hotel gig - free food.
Those days make one stronger and appreciate life more. Never been the same since.

This brings back very fond memories of my solo vacation from Florida to Montana and then into Canada. I had a wonderful time and loved sleeping in my SUV at truck stops, rest stops, Walmarts, and even some random places where other truckers were parked. Sometimes I parked on the exit ramps leading to highways in the middle of nowhere land because that is what the other truckers were doing. I was fortunate to be able to have the darkest tint you could have on my vehicle. TIP: In Florida, they have a medical exemption that allows certain people with skin conditions (eg. skin cancer) to LEGALLY have illegal tint on their vehicle.
The very next year I moved to Alaska (yes, from Florida again) and was able to drive solo again. However, this time I had to sleep in my U-Haul and it was terribly uncomfortable. Even though I towed my SUV with a mattress in the back, I never used it. I did not want to be seen getting into the back of an SUV alone at some of these very dark rest spots. Safety first.

I have my sleeper set up with all the comforts and I quite like small cozy spaces + the freedom of the open road. A single person could truck for a few years and bank almost everything they make.. Some money in the bank without oppressive bills is real freedom.. I've owned 8 homes in the past and I really don't miss the endless money pits they represent.

Could not agree with your statement from a year ago. I started becoming more and more fascinated with van life not long before the pandemic started. The shelter in place really allowed me to spend countless days and hours watching other people's conversions and set ups and documentaries on people's own personal journeys. I was born and raised here in the east bay area of Northern California. What you said about what some people have to do simply to try to just scrap by in high cost of living areas is so true. Living in one of the most outrageous and sickening expensive areas in the country myself, I would love to have opportunity to free myself from homeownership and the concrete jungle I am currently a slave to

I got a concussion from a bicycle accident (at that time I was also undiagnosed neurodiverse). Afterwards I was homeless on the street for 45 days. Then 6 months in a shelter. I've since had 70 sessions of hyperbaric oxygen, so all healed. But damn not until I had every aspect of my life ripped from me.
BTW, the HBOT clinic I went to was in Mexico City. Sessions there were only $13 each session for 2.0 ATA.
Edit: I know it's difficult to gather the resources after a life event like we have all experienced. Somehow figure out a way to either build a DIY chamber or travel to where treatment is affordable. e.g. Mexico City: $10 to $15; Egypt: $10; England: $18; Egypt: $10; Indonesia: $5 to $10.
One can build one out of an old propane tank, or concrete and rebar.

I wonder if COVID has affected the showering at truck stops/hours at most gyms as it has affected most Walmarts (most close now).

same here, work fulltime, and OT, and am also in school (online). I use the free wifi at the library, and use truck stop showers or friend's showers. I made the decision a few months ago and am sleeping in a mini van with no significant modifications, after being shuffled around from room to room in the town I live in- one 30 day notice (with no cause) and one insane situation in which my landlord lied to get a restraining order against me to get me out, while also taking my rent/deposit unjustly. I am a single female and have been in online classes since spring to get into healthcare. Despite all the drama, still have all A's and one B! I am able to cook and eat at my job, which is helpful. Some days are a struggle, but overall, I have more time to do fun things, even with my relatively crazy schedule. I do feel more free, and have gained perspective that has helped me find more happiness. One of my goals is to disengage from materialism. I hope you stay well and stay safe and have fun.

During winter time, if the car is sealed up with windows rolled up and you have a fleece blanket your body heat will heat up the car and keep you warm throughout the night. Just try not to get out of the car during that time or you'll loose valuable heat. I'm sorry if you have to go through that just thought that might help.

The big problem with getting kicked out of an apartment or home because of no job and no way to pay the rent or mortgage, and then moving into a vehicle with no job, is when the vehicle breaks down and there's no money to get it fixed. Then you're screwed.

    • @williamnale7835

Always great to see people embarking on their first nomad adventure.
Its less about living a nuanced life style, and more about breaking down assumptions of our needs as human beings in our 21st century american culture.
I like to think I have one of those 'sims' bars (like in the video games) and as long as you have the means of increasing each of those needs to get it to green, you can live anywhere. The toughest part is just finding out how to occupy yourself with your down time
