I'm Mexican and I work on the renovation of the North Mart when it burned down I had to clean the Tim Hortons and polish the floor with new wax. I thank God for allowing me to get to know that place full of magic, at first I was very scared to be so far from home, I am Mexican and I did not know ice. but the people of Iquialit are very good. I will always carry you in my heart with love from Mexico.

Due to the distance I can understand why the cost of goods are higher up in Nunavut and northern Canada. The problem I have is these prices are ridiculously high. It seems like price gouging.

Good point......! on recommending broccoli sprouts.......the only down size to this, is that you would be paying an arm and leg for stuff such as this. That's why everything like fresh while fruit and veggies are per pack no name brands or frozen in bulk bags. Like $12.00 for a while cantaloupe or other while fruit and vegetables.

Well stocked store. Anything fresh must be flown up, probably from Montreal. The cost of air freight is easily 2 to 3 times that of the product itself. Exceptions should be canned goods etc that are brought up on the summer sea lift. Question: Is Amazon still offering free delivery to Iqaluit to Prime members? I heard they cut it off to outlying towns like Arctic Bay as they were losing lots of money on every item.

  • @jasongates-

Those prices hurt just looking at them, and I'm not even in Canada.
I know you don't know the answer to this, Olivia, but I was curious to myself whether the stores in your area, if they buy in bigger bulk than they do, when they do order things to sale, (like ordering two or three times the amount they already order, in one sitting), if that would help with the prices. That's not for you to try to answer, Olivia. That's just something I thought of on my own out of curiosity. Cause, I was thinking that maybe, if they stored the extra items in like a warehouse building that they own, instead of having to ship them annually, maybe that would lower shipping costs for them from having to ship less often, and then they could pass the savings on to their customers. But, I'm not an economist or a business owner or anything like that, so that's just me speculating.
You have great taste in music, Olivia.

A lot of people feel like the grocery store there is not even trying to save money, so I don't think it's because they can't do better, it's just that they don't (greed). It might be cool if some of the locals put their money together to start their own grocery store though. From what I heard most of them just order from Amazon. Think about it, if Amazon can send you a small package for a decent price despite how far it is to ship, then how come the grocery store can't do it with the bulk shipping containers they order each week/month? They can, they just don't because people are stuck without an alternative... at least until now anyways, so maybe it will get better. The government even gave them millions of dollars so they would lower the prices for people (notice how there were two prices on the tags: that is for before and after government subsidy) but it's still expensive.

I think anybody who manages to set up a heated/lighted greenhouse operation up there is bound to become an instant multi-millionaire, the only glitch being that you have to already BE a multi-millionaire just to buy the land and all the materials to build it, AND transport all that material up there. The other issue would be how to power the heating and the lights during the winter, where I didn't see a whole lot of solar panels or windmills in any of the footage I've seen so far, which means that the power is probably imported too, most likely in the form of coal. But wow, those prices are too high. I guess the incomes are high too.

Holy crap its expensive to feed your self there..... I'm just curious how much is the cost to survive there ... Heating, water, food per week for a family ect ????
My wife and I are looking into moving there for a few years to experience it.... and we have a puppy
How well do they do in the cold ??... does yours wear a coat in the winter? How about boots ???

    • @OliviaIrwin4
      @OliviaIrwin4  5 ปีที่แล้ว

Cost to live depends on a lot of things! If you google you can find average costs and comparisons to the rest of Canada.
Our dog loves the snow and sometimes doesn’t want to come in, even when she needs to. She does wear a coat, but no boots!

I think one of your fellow residents is Annabella Piugattuk...who was amazing in the film (2003/"The Snow Walker.") It is the most beautiful and moving film I may have ever seen. She is of the Inuit tribe I believe and this (then young 20 year old) just about tears ones heart.
On the costs there? I am from the midwest U.S. and I could never afford to live there on my pension (am retired on Social Security.) My, what wages people must make there. I had to retire in 2000 and was earning $18 an hour and never made more than $40,000 a year but once in 48 years.

124.99 for that large bag of dog food ?!?! ....did that price include a fully trained dog with AKC pedigree papers ? Gotta admit, this was entertaining and at times I was laughing out loud.

The price of groshreys as you call them are hard to compare as I presume those are all in Canadian dollars. Just looking at a few of them and converting the prices, they are only slightly more expensive than you will find in Sweden.

Those produce prices are so insane that it would make sense to erect a few buildings and turn them into 'indoor farms'. The buildings would be 'community gardens'. I've seen vids of people in the US & Canada who turn their basements into 'gardens'. Also people who have turned their basement, or just a room in their house, into growing micro greens (many turning that into a business). I couldn't live anywhere where I could not grow my own food!

Not many alternatives other than buying as many items as possible from Amazon. Northmart's produce does look good despite the cost. Just getting fresh produce to Iqaluit & on the shelves quickly must be a major challenge for Northmart. Has anyone attempted building hothouses to grow tomatoes or bell peppers locally up there? I have no idea what the cost of an operation like that would be, especially flying in all the equipment necessary and setting u
