    I was lucky enough to meet Martin Short a few years ago. I told him this commercial parody is in the top 5 funniest things I’ve ever seen in my life. Such a sweet, funny man

      You were very fortunate, indeed! I'm so glad you had a chance to tell Martin Short about the comedic impact of this commercial parody.

    • @CadillacFrank
      @CadillacFrank ปีที่แล้ว +23

      @@jjwhyte14 it was at a concert where his buddy Paul Shaffer was performing. He took the stage to tell some funny stories and sing Frank Sinatra’s “That’s Life”. After the show, he came up to me and said hello, as I was waiting for one of my friends who played in the band. I tried my best not to get starstruck and have a normal conversation with him. Very friendly, approachable and a general good guy

      @@CadillacFrank Thanks for a fantastic story on many levels! The irony that Martin Short is (as I expected), "very friendly, approachable and a general good guy" and yet he parodies Jerry Lewis, a polar opposite personality adds to the hilarity of this skit. I most definitely would have been starstruck, or at least tongue-tied. I'll admit that my only familiarity with Paul Shaffer's musical talent is from many years of watching him as David Letterman's musical director in the 80s. I'll have to broaden my horizons. Currently, my only connection to Paul Shaffer and Martin Short is that all three of us were born in Canada. Very cool that you got to meet them both! (I'm assuming you met Paul Shaffer, too - maybe not).

      Born in 94 and I love SCTV. I miss when this level of comedy was on TV. Today's sketch and stand up comedy doesn't hold a candle to the old stuff. I don't even mean with the "woke" or "you couldn't do that today" excuses everyone hands out. Back then (and up into the 90's imo), there were comedic geniuses at every level, every turn in comedy.
      That's why I still turn to the old stuff like this that still makes me crack up like it the first time I've seen it. Because it was made by people who absorbed and appreciated art and other real artists from back then as well.

    “But the trends of the thing” is the funniest line in human history for a good reason. You can tell it's in there ONLY to provide the symmetry against the previous phrase, "not only to the fashion of his times."
    Short was smart enough to make a joke out of “not only A, but B” phrasing structure *by not actually having a “B” and showing it.* There is no new information you can symmetrically pair with “fashions” if you use “trend” because they’re synonyms.
    So so great! I wish I could sky write “Has always been a protester, not only to the fashion of his times, but the trends of the thing," all over the skies of the world!
