On Christmas eve 2015, let me just post some songs by one of the very greatest Jamaican reggae artists. Burning Spear (born Winston Rodney in St, Ann's Bay in 1948) is one of the most beloved Jamaican singers. Door Peeper was originally recorded at Studio One and released in 1969 on the Supreme label in Jamaica. Later released on Bamboo in England. NOTHING sounded like this at the time. with its stripped down sound, African feeling and strong sense of militancy. Tough roots rhythm and a different kind of lyrics. Here is a quote the song " Another stunning record released on Supreme .... (that) must have seemed all the more radical in 1969 was Burning Spear's amazing debut Door Peeper. Rasta lyrics and musical motifs had been adapted for commercial release before, but none sounded quite like the disc that announced the arrival of Burning Spear .Before the heavyweight rhythm emerges, a solitary voice in the gravest of tones announces , ' I and I the son of the Most High/ Jah Rastafari/ Whose heart shall correspond/ And beat in harmony/ Sounds from the Burning Spear.' What follows is not a conventional song but a chant structure , delivered in a manner that owed little to any previous Jamaican styles. The calls to ' Chant down Babylon' are repeated and repeated, interspersed with advice to ' Give thanks and praise to the only man of creation' In glaring contrast to the fast instrumental reggae records that were striking a chord with white teenagers in the U.K. this was starkly uncompromising music that demanded to be taken on its own terms or not a all." Rupert Willington adds the harmony singing on this landmark single.
