The best thing about the songs is the historical context. As an American, I wish we would study European history a bit more. Lots of cool legends and figures to study.
I think my history teachers in middle and high schools did the right thing and encouraged me to read more about history other than what was in the school books.
In American schools we are taught really about three things. WW2 the most then the Civil war from the side of the Union and the civil rights movement. That’s it. Forget Europe they don’t even bring up WW1 or Vietnam. Even the Revolutionary war is glossed over.

Our current royal family (Bernadotte) is the one that replaced Karl XIIs family (Vasa). Since the two have no history aside from the replacement (and Bernadotte is an originally French family. Also, aside from possible illegitimate children the Vasa family no longer exists. The family was on the verge of death over and over as everyone kept having only one child (except Gustav, the first of them all, who had 14. Unfortunately, the three men killed each other and the women didn’t give birth to more than 3 children who in turn had no children). Happens when you’re constantly leading armies from age 16 to 40 (not just Karl XII, his father, his grandfather, his great grandfather and his great great grandfather all did this) and your wife is sitting at home waiting for you.

When I saw that MatPat was retiring, this was the first song that came to mind. And it definitely fits. He worked hard for many years to entertain us, and is now passing the torch on to someone else.

Even though I am not of Swedish origin, I can't tell you how strongly this song moved me. Having listened to most of the other songs Sabaton has done you can hear the every band member put their souls into this, both the English and Swedish editions of the song. I don't think it's underrated, it's their most successful album made with hitting platinum status 4 times in Sweden. To me personally Carolus Rex album is their Magnum Opus and I don't think they'll ever manage to make a better one.
