- When Kyrie Irving was traded to the Mavericks last year, it was a time where his reputation was at an all time low. Kyrie had flamed out with Boston and Brooklyn over the past few years and many thought it would be no different in Dallas, especially after the Mavericks poor finish to last season. This season however, Kyrie has been a different player. Showing a newfound commitment on the defensive end, still being as great as ever on offense, and showing significant leadership qualities, Kyrie has been at his very best of Dallas this year...

Mavs fan here. I'm so f**king happy that Ky is here. He's been great. Perfect fit next to Luka, basketball wise and personality wise. Stars aligned and they both matured into the perfect co star for the other.
He’s the PERFECT costar for the young and rising Luka.
NOBODY else can command the respect that Kyrie does. All of the young guys worship him and listen to every word he says!
Luka has grown SO much next to Kyrie, as a leader and as a full basketball player.

As a Cavs fan, it really sucked when Kyrie wanted out and got traded in 2017, he was my favorite player since he got drafted, and it felt like we could have won at least one more with him and LeBron if he stuck around. But after a long a winding road to get there, so happy he’s found a home and great fit in Dallas, and hope he goes all the way this year. No matter what the Nets, Celtics, or mainstream talking heads think of him he will always have a place in the heart of Cavs fans.
His clutch shot in the 2016 finals is eternal.

@@pzooka I mean he’s matured a lot since then and I think it’s a lil deeper than being relegated to a second option. For starters he was given the keys to that franchise when he was drafted only to have them snatched away when Lebron came back. I imagine that had him feeling under valued at the time not fully understanding the magnitude and level f gravity a player like Lebron possessed. Like Brunson said about playing with Luka “it had him questioning himself if he was good enough/if he belonged in the NBA”. Lastly…. It didn’t help that Cleveland media along w/ national media started to use Kyrie as a scapegoat in order to shift any blame for their shortcomings off of Lebton.
As a mavs fan, I can tell you how loved Kai is here in Dallas. You can tell how much he appreciates playing for an organization that treats him like a person, not an employee

Gotta say I’m surprised Kyrie is playing for a franchise that signs more white players, by farrrr, than any other team in the league because white players are good for marketing in DFW.

It was a two way thing. Yes the media definitely blew some things out of proportion but some things were definitely his own faults like telling the Celtics he’d resign before leaving, not getting the vaccine which ultimately was more detrimental to his team (especially when Andrew Wiggins was willing to get the vaccine anyways and ended up winning a ring), the antisemitic issue, saying the Nets didn’t need a coach, etc.

The Dallas front office has recently employed a classic strategy in their signing and trades: buy low, sell high.
They got Kyrie when he was perceived to be very low value due to his poor reputation. They got PJ Washington and Daniel Gafford from squads that weren’t utilizing them very well, etc.
It’s been paying huge dividends
This version of Kyrie was what the Sixers and Clippers expected of Harden when they traded for him: A veteran with experience, that can explode games, or just keep doing every other thing when his shots are not falling
Harden had two 40+ point games against Boston in 1 series in 2023.

His spot now is perfect for him. His experience lets him be the team leader he wanted to be, but didn't have the sheer dominance to be, and Luka treats him as an equal on the court. And the Dallas team culture is clearly just more accepting of his eccentricity.
Kyrie low-key has been underrated for a long time imo. Like I was surprised when he didn’t make the all-star team, even though I think he was injured (correct me if I’m wrong)

Celtics Mavs would be a great series. Kyrie vs Porzingus, two players who played on each others team and is dissatisfied with their previous teams. 100% Kyrie would love to stick it to the Celtics as just much as Porzingus would like to stick it to Luka and the Mavs. Going tl be heated. That said, Mavs hasn't beaten Wolves nor have Celtics beaten Pacers yet so I may be bit ahead of my self.

I’m a Celtics fan but from when kyrie came into the league I was a big fan, even own a Kai Cavs t shirt from when I was in middle school. When he came to the Celtics I was ecstatic and then of course heartbroken and hurt two years later. First two years after the kyrie era I could’ve sworn I hated him but as time goes on and i see him succeed in Dallas, it puts a smile on my face
Been riding with him since that Raptors game in 2013. I promise you he done never left. His grandfather did and that definitely messed with him for a few years. That and he may just not be a big market guy. That kind of attention aint for everyone. That and the afro was just not it. Its so good to see him thriving in his peace now. I was the biggest kyrie hater. But damn I never thought Id see him try as hard on Defense as he has this playoffs props to him.
kyries whole career has been a lot of shaky, unwise, or downright bad choices. From the trades he demanded to the things he said and believed. But for the first time since Kyrie was super young, he finally feels comfortable on this Mavs team. He just seems happier and saner now.

Loved Kyrie since he was in HIGH SCHOOL bro. Seeing what happened with Kyrie and the Cavs was so frustrating cuase him and LeBron were UNREAL together. The Celtics and Brooklyn years were tough to watch cause all I wanted was him to just hoop and it was about everything but hoops. Super happy to finally see him in a peacful place and doing what we all know he's capable of. Sometimes you gotta take a long road to get where you're going, would love to see him in another finals

Makes sense. Kyrie Irving was the undisputed antagonist of the NBA since 2019 especially with the controversial tweet, but ever since he's been in Dallas he's really cooled off. He's due for a redemption arc. I still think the Timberwolves will defeat the Mavericks in 6 or 7, because they already pulled off the biggest upset of the season with beating the Nuggets so stopping at the WCF would make no sense. I think the Timberwolves will win the series because they want it more and because they have better defense.
