Tim I've been sailing off and on for almost 40 years. My wife recently died and you have inspired me to get back to it. I'm looking for a Catalina 30 to get me out on the Chesapeake and beyond. Thank you.
Even old small-boat circumnavigators like me love to be awash in the wonderment of ocean sailing--reliving the adventure as others newly experience theirs. Great channel!
I have never watched or heard of chasing Bubbles so I will definitely watch it. The movie/documentary that motivated me to buy a sailboat was one called "600 days to Cocos Island" about a couple sailing from the Sea of Cortes Mexico to Cocos Island in the Pacific 100's of miles off the coast of Columbia South America. I think it was made in the 70's. Have you ever heard of it? I would watch it over and over while working out in the gym at my Fire station. My wife and I bought a 29 foot Columbia sloop in Homer Alaska and I did a complete rebuild on it. We sailed that boat along the coast of Alaska for 20 years for months at a time in the summer. Those were good times. Thanks for the video.
12/13/15!! Happy Birthday Friend!! We’ve chatted some. I’m still trying to get a live aboard blue water capable first I need to sell my ranch. Been following you for a year and a half so I remember those days!! Love you too!! It truly is the journey!
Thanks for the suggestion Tim and the videos over the years. What a great documentary You have inspired me and my partner to the point we got a boat last year and are having Caribbean dreams of our own. This documentary only pushed us further in pursuing these dreams. Keep it up
Tim I agree great documentary. Alex Rust breaks down the barriers of sailing showing it’s not a cardigan and white capri pants that qualifies you to navigate the globe. It’s as moving as the sailing documentary ‘Hell or High Water’, equally well done and real !!
Loved this documentary until the end. Very sad but I believe he enjoyed his life and all too many of us don't come near enough to that. Very inspiring 👏
Tim, it's incredible how much has changed in your personal life. Remember the downturns during COVID-19, and now realize what you have achieved. Congrats, and Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Cheers.
Thank you so much for sharing that movie. I looked it up after watching your clip and it reminded me of why I wanted to have a future with sailing later in my life. Now. If I can just make it a reality I'll be happy as a clam
Inspiring as always and I'm not even a sailor. Stick with the sobriety and keep moving forward. Your passion inspires me to discover mine. Best wishes for this new year!
the documentary made me more concerned about mental health and coping by running away unecessarily, leading to tragedy than it did it motivating me wanting to sailing. There are so many distractions and escapes that 90% people chose instead of real life satisfying solutions. Which is usually, Community/family/purposeful career building. I'm torn. He seemed to be chased by demons, instead of facing them in a more corrective way.
"White Squall" is my favorite fictional sailing adventure movie. Thrilling. ofc, I have not seen it in 30 years. Edit: and now I’m watching it again tonight!! Merry Christmas All!
Nice to see you’re making milestones personally and professionally Tim, one of my personal favourite sailing movies is Wind, about the Americas cup. The cinematography was amazing!!
Tim, on December 11th I had my 2nd knee replacement. And during recovery your video appeared about Chasing Bubbles. I just completed watching it. I just want to thank you for sharing this with me and your audience. It was inspiring for sure. I have sailed to just a few of the places Alex went to but to see his spirit come through was the real magic. Sorry his spirit left too soon. Fair winds my friend.
Thanks for your channel Tim! It’s one of my go to channels though I already own a boat, the next one is always somewhere on the horizon… I’ll have to watch that documentary, one I would highly recommend to you is “Hell or high seas” it’s a great movie about a navy vet dealing with PTSD, his journey around Cape Horn, + goal of helping prevent veteran suicide. It’s a very moving story + they are based right here in Texas!
I just spent Christmas watching Chasing Bubbles per your recommendation. Thanks for the suggestion. Sometimes, inspiration comes from the spirit of another.
Merry Christmas to you and your family Tim. We get a lot of joy from watching you and appreciate the time and effort you put into making content for us.
Thanks Tim, great recomendation for your viewers! Oddly, i just rewatched this documentary last night before your suggestion popped up today. Alex was a beautiful, flawed, wise and tragic human being.
Thank you for this great video. Just viewed Chasing Bubbles and was quite unprepared for the ending. Alex lived a life beyond his years and would have made his dad proud. Look forward to following you, Lady K Sailing, in the coming year!
Love your channel and the movie. congrats on your first year sober, life keeps getting better and better even after 37 yrs. I always say the first 36 are the hardest but what would I know. Keep up the great work of bringing the love of sailing to all of us. Merry Christmas
Great Movie. I think when we're younger we're much likelier to go on such great adventure. I watch Sam Holmes Sailing and am inspired by that young man. Some day hope to be going to the sea in my retirement. My fear is to run out of $$. Being forced to return and go back to work would be terrible. LOL
Well Tim, I think you might be the second channel I came across and the first legitimate sailing channel. In my opinion I did watch sailing gbu. I think that was entry level and then came across your channel. You were still down in the Bahamas heading down heading back. It's been a few years but I've been watching since the very beginning. I can't say that sailing channels brought me to sailing. I had the boat first and I was doing lots of work on the boat but doing that work is what brought me To the sailing channels on TH-cam and you were one of the first
Thanks for sharing this! I loved Lady K getting to Bahamas. My wife and I started our marriage with a trip around the world. 30 years later my wanderlust is still there, but my body can't do what it did. We hope to kick off retirement with a boat trip from Canada to Bahamas and back.
I've seen this movie a couple of times and it has inspired me also. Plus I've also seen another documentary called "Hold Fast!" That documentary also inspired me. I recommend to everyone that has any interest in sailing to watch it.
Just watched Chasing Bubbles, thank you… loved it…. most of the film I was smiling wide…. a few parts I was like WTF? And then was a bit sad… incredible story and human. Where is Bubbles today? If decks could talk! See the world … really see… and be in the world… it’s such an amazing world. Inspiring! 🌎 ⛵️
Congrats on your sobriety! 13 years myself. I learned to sail my first year and since I have become a US Sailing instructor and owner of two sailboats. Nothing calms and settles me like wind and water. Thanks for the movie tip.
😳 I watched Chasing Bubbles when it first came out, and thanks for the reminder, I'll happily watch it again and make it s yearly holiday tradition! 👍👍👍
My Dad worked at Philbrooks Boatyard in Sidney B.C. They built the Fast Passage, the boat in the movie. I apprenticed there as a young man in the early '80's. It's pretty cool seeing the Fast Passage having a starring role in this movie. 👍
Nobody at age 22 _knows_ from years of experience what they love to do most. It's a skill that starts blooming after 'Mid Life' in their late 30s, being able to let go and sense greatness in 'what's left when all is lost', the hardest in Puritan culture that justifies it's existence by industry. That Alex Rust's second boat was almost a full keel is noted. Merry Christmas and thanks for being welcoming.
I get a lot more from your channels than just great content. Can’t put my finger on it enough to name it but wanted to say it anyway. Congratulations on a banner year amigo 😎
Merry Christmas You do a great job Because of one of your videos, two and half years ago I baught my first boat, a vintage Catalina 36. Best thing I've ever done
Happy holidays everyone. Talking of adventure sailing movies, I just want give you heads up of something massive in the making. A unique idea by someone who gave us a glimpse of a Hollywood quality sailing adventures videos a few years ago. It will be the talk of the town and not limited to the sailing community.
"All is Lost" is my favorite-albeit more serious than "Capt Ron" or "Summer Rental." I'm glad you are keeping on keeping on-glad you do this Channel, Tim.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year! The very best to you at this year’s end and may the best continue in to the new year. My favourite sailing channel.
Merry Christmas Lady K! My dad told us the same thing . . . Whatever you want to do most in life . . . Go Do! Thanks, Prayers, Joy, and Blessings! Waiting for Santa aboard S/V Mistral in San Diego Bay.
Mr. Labute - Thank you for recommending this documentary. It is overwhelmingly heartwarming and inspiring, and even more devastatingly heartbreaking. I cried. I turn 80 this year (2025). I sailed 40 years ago, then landlocked myself for a while. Thought about getting back onto the ocean but never had the nerve nor the finances. I probably will never have a boat of my own. However, after talking to my daughter's boyfriend about my experiences sailing, he caught the bug. The two of them took a sailing class from our local university, and then he bought a "refurbished" Catalina 22 for $500, with trailer. It's now parked in my back driveway. It appears to be seaworthy, but still needs a lot of work. It's going to be time consuming, but we are really looking forward to this adventure. I'll let you know when (if) we get it on the water. Thanks for all your great videos.
Tim, congratulations on your sobriety ! My daughter has been sober for 3 years now, so I understand a bit of your journey. KEEP it GOING:);) BTW love the channel. I love boats and am on boat #4 and 5, one boat too many;) Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays

Hey Tim, maybe you need to do a video about the boat, Fast Passage 39. That would be an awesome video. Thanks for the videos, I follow you since the Bimini trip. I hope to meet you somewhere in an anchorage in the Caribbean.
"All is Lost" got me into sailing in 2015. Since then I received my ASA 101 certificate, crewed aboard the Lady Washington and now contracted to sail the first leg of the 2027 Clipper Race. Thanks Tim for your videos and I hope 2025 brings even better things for you.
Thanks Tim for your advice. Have not watched Chasing Bubbles, but will now. Merry Christmas & Happy New Year. Planning the refit of Tiikeri and living the dream.
Thanks Tim, much appreciated. I've got a 20' trailer sailer ( it's the one in the background of my profile pic. A Swallow yachts Bay Raider Expedition) and working my way through the RYA courses. UK based but with global ambitions. Have lots of friends to visit in Canada and elsewhere. Perhaps see you on the great lakes or the Caribbean sometime. 😊
@4:09 “Alex sold is boat in “Caraco????” I’m guessing you meant either Caracas or Curaçao, most likely the second as the first is one hour from the coast.
I agree Tim, Sailing Bubbles is a great movie. It is a Heartbreaking yet Motivational tale, in that Unbreakable Human Spirit of Youth kind of way. Did you see his former crew found SV Bubbles in the USVI in 2021, and through the Chasing Bubbles Foundation they fully restored her and resplashed her in 2023, I want to say on what would have been Alex's Birthday?

Mine too
Chasing bubbles is actually about real people
“Pirates are easy to deal with, it’s the Cuban cops you gotta worry about”
Joe vs the volcano is also a true story
Thank you Lady K!

I've watched "Chasing Bubbles" a couple of times and loved it. The early Delos crew makes an appearance, and I think Alex had a big effect on them.
