  • Germany’s newest military innovation could significantly impact Ukraine’s artillery capabilities. The country has created a prototype artillery shell with an impressive firing range of up to 62 miles - a substantial leap from the current 155 mm rounds that reach only 20 miles.

Going from 20 miles...to 62 MILES for a 155mm artillery shell...is MASSIVE.....this pushed russian supply, ammo, fuel and headquarters much further back from the frontlines, making resupply for russia a longer more expensive and time consuming thing to do....leading to more Ukraine wins on the battlefield. Also having longer range, means ukraine guns will be out of range for counter battery fire from russian guns! HUGE GAME CHANGER!

The US should consider either upgrading their M109s with L/52 barrels if possible or look at a replacement, there’re already some options on the market. Tracked would be PzH 2000, K9 Thunder or the Polish Krab; wheeled options include the French CAESAr, the Slovak Zuzana or the Ukrainian 2S22 Bohdana. The RCH 155 should also be interesting, being able to fire on the move. L/60 systems are also already being developed.

Generally the issue with these long range shells is they are a lot more expensive than the simple ones plus at that range there's a low of variance so you basically can only use it on fixed targets and you will need to use a few shots before you hit. Also the space you use for the propellant means less space for the explosive. That being said, less expensive than a $100k HIMAR and can't be shot down.

    • @diedampfbrasse98

also needs a larger chamber and more potent charges not all 155mm NATO guns can get/use ... the Pzh2000 and caesars got those upgrade developments with the extended range / V-lap program back then they went above 60km range ... other 155s like m777s, most M109 variants etc lack those upgrades and wont be able to utilize the new shells.
Still, these new shells will be a nice addition and hopefully a cheaper, more available alternative to the very expensive/rare shells a la Vulcan ... was rather shameful how few of those extended range shells we delivered when we send the Pzh2000s over, even tho the pzh2000 added some range even with the standard shells.

Just a day later, though, they are not being overrun anymore as russia's "Kharkiv offense" grinds to a halt - as expected.
Things arent rosy, but russia cant overrun anything. As soon as they approach open terrain where their mechanized infantry capabilities are revealed as still abysmal, things suddenly stop. Its pretty clear that russia's strategy right now is to just seize territory regardless of tactical or strategic value, under the assumption that Ukraine cannot retake it.
Right now that may be true, but as slow as russia is advancing, that is going to change for two reasons: Ukraine changing their conscription policy and military aid finally rolling in. In addition to that, the White House will shortly clarify its policy that Ukraine shall not use US weapons to attack targets in russia proper in such a way, that Ukraine shall not use these weapons in an offensive capacity, but only for defensive purposes such as spoiling attacks. That means, russia will no longer be allowed to stage its troops just across the border with impunity because Ukraine will be attacking them with stand-off weapons across the border - with US blessing. In a few months russia will face the challenge of sustaining its attacks via stretched supply lines that will see intensified attacks by Ukraine, including those inside russia and with western weapons.
But a crucial element of Ukraine's success will be conscription of younger than 27 years of age men. They cant keep sending the same troops into battle indefinitely, they need to rotate them out and replace them with fresh and younger troops. Without that, no amount of aid can see this through to defeating russia.

Oh, please, 155mm shells doing "up to 62 miles" is NEVER, in millions of years, going to be a "game changer." Now, due to their relative cheaper price to produce, per unit, if 155mm shells could do, say, 150 to 300 miles... then, YES.... it'd be a LITTLE GAME CHANGER for 155mm technologies.

It‘s only a threefold increase in the range of the weapon category responsible for the majority of casualties.

It could be truth that Rheinmetall deliver such kind of shells, but our timid and procrastinating chancellor Scholz wonˋt deliver this .

Scholz doesn't want to deliver high profile or "strategic"weapons, that could hit Moskow, but Germany already delivered Vulcano and Smart, abeit in small numbers.

Barrelled artillery rounds that travel 100 km are a game changer. If they could be used with existing systems. That's about twice the reach of the systems the militaries is having now! Twice the range!!!

The worst thing was the delay of delivery of arms and ammo caused by the republicans, playing a political game on the cost of lives of Ukraine soldiers🤮

Democrats spend massive pork on welfare. This vastly reduces spending for military assistance.
