Wow Sandra! The expression ‘lightbulb moment’ doesn’t do this lesson justice. My phrasing has immediately improved and I’ve only just started working on the lesson. Absolute gold-dust! And you’re such a damn good teacher :)
Well, then you understood the most important lesson! Because like a famous jazz musician once said, there's only 3 things in jazz that count: Phrasing, Phrasing and Phrasing :-)
Thank you so so much Ms.Sherman, I got into my highschool Jazzband as the guitarist, and your videos are helping me improve every step of the way, please consider making a big band guitar tutorial
Glad you like it ❤️. The video is free, the tabs aren't. But I explain everything now 4 now, so you don't really need the tabs 😊. Enjoy the jazz ride on my channel!
Hi Sandra, thank you for such an insightful lesson. Can I accomplish the goal of this lesson using all downstrokes, a la Charlies Christensen, Frank Vignola?
Hi Garland, I don't that anyone uses downstokes solely. I know Gypsy player ist downstrokes a lot, but not exclusively. To answer your question, it is possible, but harder, bc you take the mechanial aspect out of the equation.
Yes. Only Gypsy players play a downstroke on each new string. In most styles you just keep going with the alternate picking, no matter what, to stay in the flow.
to be honest, it'll take a long time to reach my hero's performance, but I thank you that believe I could make it and you help me with this video. thank you, thank you, thank you
Thanks, Tom! ❤️ You have to keep working on your alternate picking. That's the secret to the whole system. Once this has become second nature to you, the jazz praying will be quite easy.
Great lesson Sandra😄👍. I almost thought you were going to leave out your signature gah-reetings... glad you didnt😄. I like how you mix it up... chord melody lessons, and then some technique focus. Nice! I’ve also found legato lines are strong in the fusion realm... with some smooth overdrive to make it flow. Happy lunch time once again!
Mahlzeit (Bon Apetit) my friend 😊 Yeah, there's a lot more legato stuff in fusion. Did you watch my Fusion lines video? Jim Hall and Pat Metheny both used a lot of legato too. I'm more of a traditional player when it comes to legato. Not more than one at a time.
Guitarversum Sandra Sherman Sandra, I have not seen your Fusion licks video. I looked in your YT channel videos, but did not find it. I’ll look some more, though. I’m sure it’s insightful! Thanks😄❗️
@@barrysebastian9584 The video is just a few weeks old. Whenever you search something type in the videos name or keyword plus "Guitarversum". Guitarversum Sandra Sherman Sandra - yes! I did see the minor fusion licks after all. I immediately remembered your Godin with the humbucker😉. Good licks in there😄. Yes, I get notified when something new comes up. My bad - thanks! Cheers...
Hi Sandra, in all the jazz videos I've watched, nobody has even mentioned these phrasing....mechanics?🤔. Well done for zeroing in on what is probably a missing essential for many...( I wish it was the only one in my case🙁). I especially liked the advice on those"damn' triplets...we do love them really. I was straining to see if you are still using the Ernie Ball prodigy pick, but couldn't see it properly. I still haven't tried one.
Hey Aidan, thanks for your feedback! ❤️ Yes, I still use the Prodigy. A fan sent me a Blue Chip Jazz 2mm after he's watched the pick video. It's awesome and one of my favorites. But since it's $50 😱 and I don't want to lose it, I play the Ernie Ball Prodigy in most of my tutorial videos. Still love it.
I keep coming back to this lesson and its still not in me. I enjoy practicing it though. Upstrokes are the accents of jazz soloing. would it be correct to say that the 1 and the 3 are also usual places for accents in jazz solo? (going against the strong 2 and 4 of the swing rhythm ?) thanks for clarifying. big fan of your lessons.
No, 1 and 3 are Austrian alpine Volksmusik 😂. You don't have to put ascents on each single upstroke, but if you practice it like that you'll get in the flow and do it right.
I love your jazz lessons! Thank you so much :) I have one request... Gorée by Marcus Miller - it is very hard to find good chord sheets, or other information... It is one epic song that I would really love to learn!
@@GuitarversumSandraSherman Thank you! Even if you decide not to do anything with it, it is definitely worth the listen! - I have not been moved by a piece like that for a long time... My dad plays the bass clarinet, and had send me that song - man! - it blew my mind :)
I didn't know that. Alternate picking is pretty common. It keeps the flow. It's like trying to run with only your left leg when you have two. Alternating things make them faster and smoother.
Guitarversum Sandra Sherman William Leavitt would encourage getting back to the down beat immediately, even if you have to start the triplets with an up stroke. For Berkeley, they want to use this method only for beginner readers to help to memorize common rhythmic phrases. Later, the student is able to accent with either stroke, as preparation for economy picking
Hi ! Do you think this kind of work inspired Pat Metheny ? As I can hear his way of playing it seems to me that he's using upstrokes much more than down...
Yes, Pat has a very "unique" picking technique. The thing is, if your phrasing is correct already, you don't need all of this. But the alternate picking is supposed to help you in the beginning to get a feeling for good jazz phrasing. Because all you have to do is pluck the upstrokes a little harder than the downstrokes. Plus, you can play faster and smoother. No hickups 😊
A drummer or drum machine, or Band-In-A-Box programm does even better. You can start "dry", without any rhythm. But once you can play the phrasing in 1/8th notes, you should practice with some form of pace maker, like a metroneme.
Thanks for the hint. I keep my action very low and accept the string buzz 😊. But it sounds a lot more depth the voice mix bleeding in. With the direct guitar sound it's almost unnoticable.
@@GuitarversumSandraSherman You said it! Any lessons about improving phrasing would help. Perhaps a video contrasting the same licks with "bad" phrasing" vs. jazz phrasing? Thanks again!

This is great lesson for aspiring jazz guitarists. Question: Is it common to change strings with a upstroke vis-a-vis downstroke?
Yes. Only Gypsy players play a downstroke on each new string. In most styles you just keep going with the alternate picking, no matter what, to stay in the flow.

The Berkeley Guitar Book recommends this kind of picking as a way to count with your pick as you are reading music.
