  • Watch a step by step guide on how to test your blood glucose levels. In order to perform a blood glucose test you will require your blood glucose meter, a test strip to hand, a lancing device and a monitoring diary to record the results of your blood glucose test.
Diabetes.co.uk's Benedict Jephcote runs through how to test your blood sugar. In this video, Benedict is using a OneTouch meter and test strips.
How to test blood glucose: www.diabetes.co...
    How to inject insulin: www.diabetes.co...
Ben's blood glucose was 3.6 mmol/L (or 65 mg/dL) in this video. Learn about hypos (low blood glucose) at www.diabetes.co...
For those not in the UK, mmol/L is the UK standard unit. mg/dL is the American unit. You can convert between the two here: www.diabetes.co...

For anyone who was having the same problem as me. I kept not getting a reading so I poked myself about 7 times. I realize my error was that I was putting the blood on top of the testing strip (the gold part) where it actually needs to be on the side of the paper because then the blood goes between the papery layers and gets tested.

Thank you for this video! This helped me learn how to test and teach me the tools on what I need to buy to to do it with. When I got GD my doctor gave me prescription for a meter and test strips only which I only got the meter approved and she didn't tell me I needed more items to test or explain anything really. I ended up having my son before I bought everything and the told me I didn't have diabetes when I got released from the hospital, but am having symptoms of my blood sugar still being off. I have to buy a new meter cause the test strips alone for the meter insurance gave me are $80 for 50 on top of other stuff I have to buy. I am now buying the cheaper one at Walmart and the other stuff I need. So thank you for this!

Wipe off first spot of blood off your finger and use the second drop for an accurate reading . Should have mentioned blood sugar level less than 140 mg/dL (7.8 mmol/L) is normal. A reading of more than 200 mg/dL (11.1 mmol/L) after two hours indicates diabetes. A reading between 140 and 199 mg/dL (7.8 mmol/L and 11.0 mmol/L) indicates prediabetes.

It is best after pricking your finger to get a clean blood sample, is to wipe away the 1st bead of blood 🩸 and raise a 2nd bead of blood and wipe clean once more. Use the 3rd bead of blood for your test. You can often see a variation sometimes dropping 30 points or more in the last blood bead sample.

There is no quick cure like this other commenter. There is a group on Facebook called type 2 diabetics lchf in the picture and description (it means low carb high fat). There is a ton of info on what to do to get control of your diabetes to where you can stop meds and manage with diet alone. There are groups similar in name so make sure you join the one that is lchf! The other support things that can raise your bs numbers. There are two sister groups one is for support and one for recipes. There is a while chart for compatible foods you can buy that won't mess with your bs. Good luck.

@AnabolicMutant not all areas in your body are highly vascular. for adults, the side of the finger is chosen because it is highly vascular and contains less nerve endings. for babies, the heel of the foot is chosen. also, the side of the finger is less sensitive to pain while the tip of the finger has a dense nerve supply.
the puncture site always matters because any alteration can affect the results.

i have a glucose meter through my medical insurance that i have. It shows different than yours. it will show up as numbers(ex:146) instead of a number and a decimal and number (3.6) what exactly does your number mean as opposed to mine? is mine to high?

I can't prick myself by pressing the button. can't bring myself to do it.
so i just stick the lancet in manually
    and it works just fine

In any can of test strips I've ever had, the electronics end is always at the can entrance, so when you take it out, you're not touching the blood end. I wipe the first bit of blood away, to stop skin-based contaminated, yet this guy lifts the strip out BY the blood end?? Madness.

One of these with a more advanced sensor that could detect vitamin deficiencies, white cells etc would be quite literally a lifesaver. I'm not sure if the technology for it exists though.

OST people I know including me don’t change the lancet at all between test. It’s not necessary and is cost prohibitive. I also prick the center of my finger. If it hurts to do it that way, then you have the lancet set to go in too deep! I don’t feel the lancet and the appropriate amount of blood comes out. When one does this frequently, one learns not to waste time and money.

This is a fantastic video. Would I be allowed to use it to show my students. Whilst I am not teaching them how to carry out this procedure, I would like them to see what is involved in testing blood glucose levels.

Why do you have to change the lancet if it’s your own device .

@@paigeandcedsister how you are only using it on you. if its kept clean you cannot give yourself an infection.
