1 saving grace of overthinking the implications of this movie is that because the curse gets more and more diluted the more people watch it the curse evolves from the "a demon will possess you and literally use your body to shoot yourself" into like "you will lose 50 cents when you check into your pocket" and I think its somewhat soothing

i watched another analysis about this film and they provided a pretty good theory about Ms. Hsia's death. Ms. H is dead even though she didn't watch the video probably because she asked another god to protect Dodo. The slip that Ms. Hsia gave to Ronan is actually an amulet to protect Dodo (that's why Dodo's name is on it). People usually get this kind of amulet by praying to god in temple to ask for blessing and protection. Dodo is chosen and possibly protected by Mother Buddha, and by asking other god to protect Dodo, Ms. H pissed Mother Buddha off so she was cursed and killed.

That's actually foreshadowing. Ronan actually knew about the curse the entire time. She got her daughter for that very purpose, hoping to alleviate her own curse by replacing the Chosen Child with Dodo. That's why she gets her to chant her own name the very first night in the house. But somewhere down the line, she said she ending up falling in love with her daughter. So she went from trying to save herself to trying to save her daughter. Even sacrificing herself in the end. It's sad and messed up on Ronan's part, but I guess that's just human nature, to want to preserve your own life

if i remember correctly, the reason why they all deteriorated/got affected by the curse differently is based on how much they knew about the curse itself which is why guy who wanted to be Dodo's dad and doctor died quickly as they either researched about the cursed and/or saw the final video of Rona's friends. (they essentially got a crash course on the curse if they watched it) and the only reason why Rona didn't get affected by the curse until much later is because she "offered" her unborn baby to Mother Buddha (i.e. when it was revealed she was pregnant and urged to offer her child as well, so she was being spared as Dodo was the expected to be the NEW SACRIFICE) But since she rescinded that offer as she grew to love Dodo and wanted her to live freely (why she went to the monk in the first place and tried to find a way to end the curse), but when nothing worked she instead decided to bear the Sacrifice role instead of Dodo and had us cursed as well to ensure that the remaining curse on Dodo gets lessened. hope this helps! ^7^

I think that, with the monk scene, it's supposed to show that Ronan knew about the curse from the beginning. When she's teaching Dodo to write her name right after taking her home, that's apparently her TRYING to pass the curse from her onto Dodo. She then feels guilty when she sees Dodo is cursed, and attempts to reverse it the rest of the movie. Dunno how accurate that is but it's what I've read

Yeah the little girl saying "did you throw me away because you were scared of the monsters " could mean two things as well. One being dodo thought the mom didn't want her to get "sick" so she sent her away or two the mom threw her away (giving her soul up) in order to cure herself. I feel like guilt plays a big role when you see the mom crying after eating and allowing dodo to believe that they are both starving. Just like the girl with the missing ear, dodo is kinda like a sacrifice. That leads me to think that maybe dodo is also a "blessed" child maybe that's why she didn't immediately die after being cursed because the intent was different? (Like her purpose to be a sacrifice). That's just speculation.

This concept is actually really common in a lot of Asian movies, particularly Japanese, Taiwanese, Korean, and Vietnamese films. Sharing a curse is a huge superstition in these cultures. There's even a Japanese movie very similar to this one that I recently watched, where a bunch of teenage girls invoke a curse by accident. At the end, the surviving girls curse the audience so they can live decades peacefully before the curse gets back around to them (they found a way to skip over themselves, but the curse always comes back). They then apologise to the audience for involving them, admitting it's selfish but determined to live.

This movie hits even harder within a Buddhist cultural context. Statues of some Buddhist figures do have covered faces, particularly wrathful deities (using the word deity here loosely). I learned that this was to prevent those of us not spiritually strong of mind from looking upon the wrathful deity's face and questioning Buddhist belief and doctrine. So, to look at the Mother Buddha face is to directly pervert the Buddhist doctrine of the temple. This explains the heaviness of the action within the film. The gang signs (lol) used by the temple are mudras, used as ritual gestures for the purpose of meditation or prayer. There do also exist some more gorey Buddhist stories or rituals, so that too is somewhat rooted within realism although it usually would not be to that extent and such rituals are rare. One example would be Chöd, a Tibetan Buddhist ritual meditation in which you offer yourself physically to demons to be eaten and separate yourself moreso from your flesh (which is an earthly attachment). Typically though these are simply ritualistic thought experiments. To avoid the curse by giving up all attachment, even your name, seems suitable as well. The twist that Ronan was trying to spread the curse and offload it from herself was really interesting. I did not expect it at all. I might have to check out the movie.

PS thank you for the context it seriously brings so much light to the more ritualistic aspects of this film :)
Double edit-- an unformed thought but the idea of you not being allowed to look at certain buddhas faces for your own protection reminds me of when I was a kid and we weren't allowed to take communion because if you eat Jesus' body without already being 'saved' you'll have a one way ticket to hell. Or something like that lolol. Idk I can kind of understand it, as you don't want people who are not spiritually strong to partake in more dangerous spiritual rites.

Not sure if you noticed, but everything starts going to shit because the mom starts to say Dodo's real name and the spirit recognized it, seeing as her name was offered up during the ritual as well. Dodo's nickname therefore was most likely made to avoid using her real name which I say is plausible because in my culture (I am hmong which borrows from many other asian cultures) you would change your name whenever you're severely sick so the spirit or curse won't be able to recognize and afflict you.

You pledge your real name to the god, as Ronon did for herself and her unborn daughter and are not allowed to ever say those names again. While Ronon calls Dodo "Dodo", the god can't claim her as your name/fate/life are tied in this conception of religion.

    some corrections for you:
-The reason she has buddha statues is the same reason she knew the people at the Buddha temple so well its implied she went through a heavy religious phase to fight or spread the curse before having a mental breakdown and ending up in a psychiatric hospital
-The reason the little girl tries to take the camera is the same reason the uncle tells Ronan to fuck off when the ghost busters arrive. They dont want outsiders to also be a part of their horrible karmic retribution despite what it might seem in their worship and rituals to appease the mother buddha.
-The reveal well not really well done is supposed to imply that she knew this shit and probably had already seen what was in the tunnel video meaning she might have willfully killed her family (maybe accidentally in this case) and those 2 cops at the beginning in order to spare herself and more importantly she uses Dodo at the beginning of the movie in a similar way by getting her to give up her name. One of the reasons she gave her away was so she didn't fall in love with her making it easier to do something so vile.
-the reason she shows the mother buddha's face at the end is so people watching incur the "heaviest burden" ensuring Dodo's safety. as long as there are those with heavier burdens to be punished Dodo will hopefully be spared.
    - this correction is purely speculation but I think part of the reason Ronan has been somewhat spared from death is because she is a very unreliable narrator she has been using opportunities to spread the curse and ease her burden like when she got Ming to chant while they were in the car. By offering the ear at the end and basically fucking up the shrine in hopes to spread as much curse as possible she had also effected her own survivability succumbed to the curse. not to mention that the writing on her body is basically saying that she is sacrificing herself to the deity in order to spread its power.
-and finally a lot of people would succumb to the call of the void and be curious enough to look at mother Buddha's face regardless of how they felt about he lying

People can cause bad things to happen to themselves by believing they will happen, and they'll immediately assume every bad thing happening is connected to some random but similar thing that happened in the past. It can work the other way too, and the combination of these things is probably the origin of religious belief. A bit problematic, but it's totally normal.

My aunt had a shrine pretty much identical to the one in the movie (yes even the creepy red light, it's essential) my grandmother had a shrine in the living room and a small one outside and I personally have one in my living room too. In my area it's not uncommon for people in small apartments who dont have room for shrines just find a small unrented room and just devote that one to a shrine room, everyone pitches in to pay and everyone can use it. Tbh when I watched this movie and saw the mother Buddha statues face I was like “….ohhhh!!” and I’ll tell you why, this might just be a coincidence but idk hehe
So the people who see mother Buddhas face tend to off themselves in a very specific way, by repeatedly smashing their face against a hard object. This feels like a really really weirdly specific way to go about it, so I wonder if the hole in the statues face is alluding to this. The repetitive smashing kinda felt like the characters were replicating that really gross open wound looking gape by disfiguring themselves.

I’m so happy you reviewed Incantation. I’m Taiwanese-American and there are some cultural features in the movie that were frightening for me because of my background. Like the scene when Ro-nan returns to the couple after Do-do eats the pineapple: the little statues with the flags on them moving suddenly was the biggest jump scare for me. As a child, when we visited Taiwan, those little statues are representations of god-generals that would be in the temples.
My great-aunt loved telling us scary stories before bedtime and that lore and tales of Taiwanese boogeymen shows in Incantation.

The scene with the guy i can't remember if its Dom or Yuan pulls out his teeth triggered my odontophobia something wicked and each time i saw it i had to turn away from whatever i was watching it on so i didn't have to see it.

Fr, my sister was the one who recommend this movie to me, and each time Ronan asked us to repeat something or look at stuff id skip or pause and when she said shit like "the more you know the more cursed you are" i would pause and think "maybe i should just stop watching now", even when we were shown the tunnel video i tried my best not to look and skip it and stuff, but i wind up watching it thinking "its okay this is not real, it's not that scary" boy was i wrong, i was so frustated they went into that tunnel in the first place and got pissed everyt time Yuan tried to touch something liek "you fool, y'all shoudl leave" as if id change anything and when Dom saw the face of the statue and froze my heart stopped and when he beat his face up against the wall i had a heart attack like i can't even-
When it was reaveled she tricked us and at that time i couldn't pause the video and watched intently for god knows why even though i was shitting my heart out, i was so scared i called my sister whos aboard to ask her wtf did she ask me to look that up for ?! And she reassured me saying it ain't real and all like okay
But what was the last straw for me when she showed us the face of the mother buddha and then proceeded to bang her head like it was so abrupt i was frozen the entire time and when came the time i had to got to sleep i couldn't and woke up every 5 to 10 minutes, i ended up watching cute cartoons until i was so exshausted and couldn't stay up.

The only thing I liked about the movie is how it involves the viewers into the curse, which is a neat concept. She had multiple cameras for a reason. She says it's a journey for when Dodo grows up, but it's really to give as much knowledge of the curse as possible and to feel the audience to feel bad for her. Because as she said before, the more you know about it, the worse the curse will be. It's to alleviate her own curse

i remember reading a horror manga as a kid and in one story, they said that a particular ghost will come for you if you still remember it until you're 20... sure enough, i keep thinking about it every 2 years or so. i'm now 23, healthy and ghostless. but that kind of curse scares me the most.

I love horror movies, as does my husband, and it’s been awhile since we both got legitimately creeped out by a movie. I’ve gotta agree with you, there’s a lot of plot holes and unexplained things in the movie. However, I think that kind of fits the whole “found footage” sort of genre. I think Ronan knew much more than she let on, as evident by the fact that she knew the statue placements, but also by the hints dropped by her doctor that Ronan was obsessing over this for a long time. I mean, Dodo is 6 years old, and Ronan had been searching for answers well into her pregnancy, as evident from the monk clip. Who knows exactly when Ronan actually checked herself into a psychiatric hospital.
Like other people have mentioned, I think Ronan was planning on sacrificing Dodo to save herself, but ultimately completed the ritual she stopped years ago with the “chosen girl” to save her child she had grown to love. I also think that the reason the “chosen” girl was found in a ditch implies that Mother Buddha didn’t want her anymore. Maybe because she had tried to save Ronan? Idk. Just spitballing here.

  • @_HJ_K
    @_HJ_K 2 ปีที่แล้ว +99

Well I didn’t expect this movie to make it’s way into the English speaking world lol.
Actually after watching this horror movie for the first time I was left more *sad* than *scared* .
If sharing a piece of the curse with a lot of people can spare the little girl from her doom then I am willing to, it’s actually just like a “Gofundme” situation, but instead of giving money to the troubled ones, you share a piece of curse, you ease the burden from the troubled ones by taking a small piece of that burden, and just like how it’s explained in the movie, the more people share this curse the less powerful it is, and thus less burden was put on a single person.
A lot of people in my country gave this movie a 1 star review simply because the movie tried to “curse” them in the end and they got angry lmao, people are stupid.
Though this kind of “cursed tape” skit is not at all unique in supernatural horror movies nowadays, I still appreciate it that they tried to use this to break the 4th wall and connect with the audiences.
The poltergeists in the city storyline and those hauntings in their apartment is kind of cliché for a supernatural horror movie. However, my favorite part in this movie is actually the village and that tunnel in the flashbacks, the village was so creepy and deranged, with half of the movie building up for the villagers’ sinister and mysterious secret, followed by the scene in the night of pure horror and pure chaos. I think that’s awesome.
That part also kind of reminds me of Outlast 2 lol
