You experienced the "squat effect" which actually increases a vessel's draft (your words were sucks us down) when operating in shallow water. Cutting your speed in half reduces the squat effect by a factor of 4.
They just have to be below surface. They are flighty angled away from barge. Not angled that it affects accuracy, just away from barge a bit. Pretty simple deal
See them about every time the river falls kinda fast and tugs don’t get fleets pulled. Kinda regular type deal for minor groundings with fleet barges, as they are usually leaned against bank.
Love the videos
I’m not in your industry , but it’s just fascinating to watch what goes in to moving all that Iron around!
Great video Captain. Pucker factor check for sure. Awesome how all the boats assist each other on the river.
It is interesting to see how you are dealing with the low water conditions.
Mississippi at Cape Girardeau looks like a creek. Hank Williams song may becoming true lol
I fish on the Ohio just South of Henderson Ky. Barges are stacked against the shore here.
Love the video. 😊
Good way to.keep the bottom of the barges and the boat polished up. :)
We’re on it now. Not many barges.
IT AMAZES ME AS SLOW AS THEM BOATS ARE HOW QUICK YOU WIND UP IN TUNICA FROM NAWLINS!
How fast?
What’s the lowest the water can be to be able to float them things
StL had an almost 2 foot rise, up to about -1.5. Dropping back to -3.5.

Very aware of this. 👍🏻
Don’t know where “factor of 4” number comes from. 🤷🏼♂️
THANX, CAPT. HOW DEEP ARE THE BOW DEPTH SOUNDERS, APPROXIMATELY AS LOW AS THE BOTTOM HULL OF THE BARGE ?
No more than 1 ft.
Preferred about 6 in.

THANX, CAPT. WE ALWAYS ENJOY UR VIDS@@marktwained
Is the upper Mississippi running low, too?
No, it's flooded.
When’s the last time you’ve seen a barge stuck?

@@marktwained thanks for the reply. I’m born and raised in Hannibal MO. Live in Quincy IL now. I see the empties staged ready for harvest.
No water really screws up duck hunting too.😂
KYLE, HOW MANY HRS DO THEM ENGINES RUN TILL OIL CHANGE? ALSO, HOW MANY HOURS , ROUGHLY, TILL AN OVERHAUL ON ENGINES?
I don’t know.
@@marktwained Oook
Do you have sonar on the front barges?
