As an avid Mega Man X fan myself, I can't just ignore this. The story of Mega Man X4 is actually really brilliant once you truly understand what's going on. Really, Repliforce was innocent the whole time. They just got handed a raw deal. First, you have to remember what it means to be a Maverick. It actually goes deeper than just a computer virus. In fact, the various means of being deemed a Maverick are as follows: (Potential) Maverick behavior (Potential) Dangerous behavior Disobeying humans Harming humans Disagreeing with humans Defending yourself against humans Challenging authority Being perceived a potential threat Prioritizing Reploids over Humans Becoming infected with the Maverick Virus Repliforce got framed. Plain and simple. They had no alibi for why they were there in the first place, and all the evidence was stacked against them. Add onto that X/Zero treating Colonel like a criminal and asking him to disarm instead of _taking him for his word_, and it makes sense why he didn't throw down his weapon. Also, had he thrown down his weapon and gone in for questioning, he wouldn't have been given a fair trial. When a Reploid is deemed Maverick, that's a _death sentence._ Meaning that by coming in quietly, he'd be walking in to be executed _on the spot_ for a crime he didn't even commit, with no chance to explain himself. Is there a chance this wouldn't have happened? Yes. There's a chance he _did_ just overreact, but looking at the list of things one can do to be deemed Maverick, Repliforce has already done almost _half_ of the things on this list by accident or by simply wanting to _plead his case._ And again, remember that in the Sky Lagoon incident, an _entire human city was destroyed, with all the humans killed._ Repliforce didn't stand a chance, and they knew it. So they then decided to just, leave. They'll make their own nation of Reploids. One where they don't have to worry about being deemed Maverick due to a mistake. It wasn't about rebellion or insurrection. It was quite literally about them wanting equal rights for Reploids. They just wanted a world where they could be treated as _humans._ Not as simple machines without souls. And since they weren't going to get that on Earth, they wanted their own world. _Why a space laser, though?!_ So they could defend themselves! They knew that people would try to stop them, and that they might send someone *coughs* Mega Man X or Zero *cough* to bring them home by force if necessary. We don't even know if the weapon was pointed at Earth initially, but I doubt it. But General even states that he had no intention of _ever_ firing the weapon on Earth. It was meant as a deterrent. They have the big gun, so... don't go after them, and they won't have to fire it. _Just leave them alone,_ and they'll be fine. I'm sorry for the long comment, but when people talk about Repliforce and how the story of X4 sucks, it always triggers me. It's my favorite story in the series, and Repliforce literally did nothing wrong. To say that they _did_ proves the point they made. So long as they're Reploids, they don't _get_ rights or a fair trial. #RepliforceDidNothingWrong
This game is my favorite too, but the story is dumb because of how easy the conflict could've been resolved but everyone became idiots in the process, including X and Zero. The dark tone of the game and the story progression is dark and great for sure. But it was something that was easily avoidable if they just sat down and talked things out. Especially when the General met with Sigma and was warned about it too.
@@Brianycus I, don't think it _would_ have been resolved though. Mind you, the games don't do a good job of presenting this, but essentially, humans _aren't_ rational when it comes to Reploids. If Repliforce had disarmed and tried to talk it out, it would have been Kangaroo Court essentially. Again, the evidence was _damning_ against them, and Reploids have it rough as is in that world. I might be biased to a degree, since Repliforce is my favorite thing in Mega Man lore period (even have an OC planned that's a member of Repliforce), and I _will_ admit that the game could have presented its story better, but I don't think it could have been resolved easily. That said, don't think this is me criticizing your review. Honestly, being able to have this conversation concerning Mega Man with someone else who loves the franchise is a lot of fun for me.
I feel like X4 is a good premise for a story, but the story itself isn't good because of how poorly it's told. Repliforce came out of nowhere in X4 and the melodrama around Iris and Colonel made basically no sense at all since we had no idea who either of them were prior to Repliforce's exodus movement. Really though the biggest problem with the X series is that it's all about how humans are generally incapable of living in tandem with intelligent robots but starting from around X4 there aren't any human perspectives in the picture at all. So we have no idea how humanity perceives reploids, Maverick hunters, or anything else. As a result X and Zero appear to just fight for no particular person or reason. Also questionable is why General was meeting with Sigma in the beginning at all, but I guess that isn't super important. What I think the X series really needs more than anything at this point though is something that finally ties the original series into X. IE Mega Man 12 and up (hopefully over the course of no more than two more games) need to move on to the ultimate fate of the original Mega Man (also Roll, Protoman, and Bass) and the first activation of Zero so that we can finally move on to giving the X series the Mega Man 11 treatment.
@@Brianycus I wouldn't fight him first lol... but it definitely helps with the boss rush to know... me and my little brother raced to see who could complete the series the fastest... he was kinda mad I not only did it faster... I platinum trophied both collections...

Thought the story was pretty good. It was tragic seeing the Repliforce, an army who want to do the right thing, be deemed Maverick and ostracised because of Sigma’s influence (remember, Magma Dragoon is Sigma’s ally, along with Split Mushroom and Cyber Peacock, shown by the Sigma logo instead of the Repliforce logo), while the Repliforce had to rebel against the humans to survive. Caught in the middle are X, Zero and Iris, who know they must bring the Repliforce to justice but have personal ties to them and don’t want to see them hurt or killed. While talking would be a pretty easy fix to all of this, a lot of tragedies, in fiction and in real life, could also have been prevented just by talking, but couldn’t reach that stage. The same is true here. That’s what this game is: a tragedy. From X being betrayed by Double, Zero having to kill Colonel and Iris for holding onto their beliefs and by the end of it, it didn’t even matter in the end. Sigma is still on the loose and looking to kill X and Zero. Oh, and the Maverick Hunters hunt Mavericks, while the Repliforce are a peace-keeping army that fights all sorts of battles, not just against Mavericks. Think of them like the army versus the police. You wouldn’t send an army battalion to disarm an armed robbery, much less send a police squad into a battlefield.
My personal disappointment with the story is that X and Zero never interact in the main game. In fact, the only time they are on screen together in in the opening fmv and in X’s ending. X and Zero interactions in the X4 manga were interesting imo.
I think if they put more effort in Zero & X interacting, then the story would have more impact because we see what they think about the situation. Kinda like what they do for the Manga of X4, which yes, there is a manga haha
I like X4 because it could have been so much more, the gameplay is defo the best, soundtrack possibly the best (near X5 and X7 including X6), story... Well it could have been great (Not sure how to spoiler on mobile so do not read if you Haven't played X4) I like how your character in the thumbnail holds Iris like a fine lass even that she is freaking dead ;-;
I personally think X4 is the best way to give players both a challenge and a new way forward for those who never played the franchise. Like I always recommend either X1 for obvious reason or X4 because of how well designed it is for everyone to play the game.
WHAT AM I FIGHTING FOOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRR?!?!?! Man the voice acting was something else but the game just rips! Anime cutscenes, memorable bosses and stages... yep peak Megaman X!
Interesting fact: in the Korean versions of the game, Zero’s moves are named in their Hanja pronunciations. Ryūenjin/りゅうえんじん/龍炎刃 =Yong Yeom In/용염인/龍炎刃 Raijingeki/らいじんげき/雷神撃=Noe Shin Gyeok/뇌신격/雷神撃
I immediately chose Zero when I got this for Saturn. It was frustrating with x3 at the time. Only allowing zero for 2 minutes before he dipped out or died permanently. Since the 1st game, I wanted to use zero & without internet at the time, I just got every game. Collecting every item hoping to unlock him. Then x4 took away his blaster smh
I think the story is decent but executed poorly. If Repliforce were already established characters in the previous games and if X and Zero interacted more often like in the x4 manga, the I don’t it would be as bad imo.
Mega Man X4 is just peak fiction man.

You still use weapon energy with the helmet upgrade if you charge them up. Only regular shots preserve weapon energy.
I'm not so sure Zero was the one having a crush on Iris. It really felt the other way around to me. Iris was simping on Zero fr.
They had mutual feelings for each other but Iris shows it more because of the circumstances. You see the hints of their relationships in the opening.
