+Dean Lancashire But he isn't wrong though. Pink and black out of commision, 7 reds on the cushions (or close to). Thorne didn't say it was completely impossible to make more than 20, only that it would take something special to do so.
Fair call though. With the way the balls laid, if you bet against any player clearing the table you'd be odds on to win. INSANE stuff from Ronnie, here.
It's the only match of snooker I've ever seen that happen. Usually inferior players can at least see what's being attempted. Not here. The philosopher Schopenhauer once said 'talent is like an archer hitting a target the other's can't hit, genius is hitting a target they can't even see'
If I played in a tournament they wouldnt know what I was doing either, and to be honest I won’t know what I’m even doing and my 20 something breaks will be blowing people away
I've watched countless 147 breaks, centuries, amazing safety exchanges, and excellent single ball pots. But I must say without any doubt, this is the greatest break I have had the pleasure to witness. The impeccable grit and determination of every single shot in this break is what places it above all else. Wonderful.
Looking at the seemingly hopeless state of the balls when he starts, is what defines this magnificent break, can't think of any player from any era that could have pulled this off...Truly remarkable.
it sounds like you never saw much of Hendry. To this day, no one has bettered his ability to pot in a long red and clear up. Admittedly, Ronnie is a genius. But there's not much you can do when Hendry is on song. Just watch the 99 and 2002 world semis that the two played (and Hendry was past his best at that point). Or in 94 when he scored 7 centuries in 10 frames in winning the UK Final...a record still not beaten 27 years later.
To me, this one counts as a Century... "Do well, to make above 20 from here..".- He made a 92 Clearance, with magical reds in the end... Genius at work. :)
Greetings from Finland! I used to watch This game from Eurosport channel When I was 11-13 years old. This was relaxing to watch. I was Close to falling asleep. I told my parents that Mr. O'sullivan can play very accurately. He's a tough guy.
For me this is the best break ever made by Ronnie O'Sullivan. To run out this difficult table with such an effortlessness. This is why he is world No 1.
Yep. It was probably the best break in the history of the game, since the table was so tricky. Probably only Trump would take that on and clear from there, albeit highly doubtful.
Me too. I just had a feeling when he came to the table he was going to do something special. Best break I've ever seen. Even better than THAT Alex Higgins one.
love the way the commentators criticized some of Ronnie's shot choices just because they would have done it differently. Drives me crazy when commentators criticize players who they could only dream of imitating. Oh and this break was by a mile the best i've ever seen!
I would love to be able to watch snooker with just the natural sounds of play, unencombered by ex-pros inadvertently demonstrating the fact that their career was based around purely non-speaking skills.
Comparing this to the clearance of Alex Higgins is like comparing a surgeon to a faith healer. Higgin's break was a chain of difficult pots, but required because of terrible position control. Ronnie's break however was almost supernatural. That shot off the brown into the reds on the top rail has to be one of the greatest shots in snooker in the last 20 years.
nah g, this break was made during frame 7 of the final, there was no added pressure at all. higgins' 69 is far more remarkable precisely for this reason, if he missed just one shot he would most likely be out of the world champs. if ronnie missed here not much would happen i expect, carter probably wouldn't be able to convert the difficult balls and a safety exchange would ensue. ronnie would probably win the frame anyway. higgins faced a young jimmy white who was a fearsome potter and had nothing to lose! besides, the brown is a great shot but nowhere near as good as you suggest
@@stanleyharrison7031 come on now…. If you are talking about pressure clearances then it’s a different story. In respect of how difficult it was this is absolutely number 1. Ridiculous that he could do it, Higgins’s 60+ was on although it took nerves and quality it wasn’t the same as what was left on here….. let’s be straight both are different level 🤷♂️
I have watched this break countless times but my mind always drag me back here as if i have some unfinished business here and this happens again and again and again... he is a just a player who loves snooker more than anything... thats it... simply the best man to ever played the game...
If you pay attention, you can hear Michaela Tabb miscounting 79 to 86 after pink! IMO, one of the best breaks ever in terms of plan and execution especially missing few easy pots earlier.
Exactly, just watched the 2010 documentary about Alex and saw the scene with his girl, and Ronnie's celebration was so similar that I was very impressed by it.
+Everio620User Even better. Ronnie mission as the rocket is to get into those hurricanes and whirlwinds and find out and play to Alex's and Jimmy's standard, he can do it.
Thanx :) Actually a lot was similar between Alex's and Ronnie's triumphs separated by 30 years!! Most notable was their celebration with their child after winning the title :)
I couldn't believe this when I saw it ... no way would I or anyone have believed from first glance at the table would this genius be able to clear the whole table in one visit! I was like :-o whilst smiling with wtf gesture lol
It is much easier to make a 147 just playing around the black. This one is not a maximum but it contains all the right ingredients. For anyone learning to play snooker, I will say just lay the table as it was when he started the break and learn to play the shots exactly as he did. Each shot has a specific skill into it. If you manage to do it the same you are there.
Rather a tough ask, as even Ronnie would struggle to replicate this; I would suggest there are probably better practice routines. However, spot on about it being harder to make a 147.
Wow this is the epitome of a grandmaster and a genius at a particular skill.. Only one in every sport ever.. in every rage and madness there is some kind of beauty to it.
One difference that I've noticed between the television coverage of this break and Higgins's in '82: the commentary. At no point - that I recall, at least - did the commentators in 1982, Jack Karnehm and John Spencer, explicitly question Higgins’s shot selection, etc. Yeah, they alluded to it, but there wasn't really a sense of, 'Well, I would have done it like this...' Anyway, O'Sullivan's positional play and cuing in this break is exceptional.
A work of genius. However this break and this version of ronnie osullivan has nothing on the ronnie of 2022. The man refuses to let age be a barrier and plays a more complete game now. He never stopped learning and his shot selection and game management now means the player he was then couldnt compete with the player he is now. Thats the biggest compliment you could give the man.
It's a ritual to come back here every once in a while. First, to remind myself how difficult this sport can be. Second, to remind myself there is only one genius in this sport.
I do the same thing. Ritual. I always think it’s as if someone has set up the balls in a ridiculous way to see if he’ll take the challenge on. He said he viewed the table as a pool table and knew he wouldn’t miss.
Ronnie would not have backed himself up for this clearance before his visit, but the fact he was able to pick them off one by one was an extraordinary achievement.
It was the way he cleared the reds around the black that was the genius part. Everyone, would have just went for the cannon. The pot on the brown to bring the last two reds into play is just....... I'm speechless......
Which do you think ronnie deserves more credit for, this break or the 147 in 5:20... I'm still on the fence. The canon off the brown might just sway it though lol
in my opinion these are 2 completely different breaks.. Alex's has mostly amazing pots, but those amazing pots come from not such good positional play. Ronnie's is basically perfect positional play AND some difficult pots. So I'll have to choose Ronnie's as the best.
I found Willie Thorne's commentary really hard to swallow in this match. He mentions on three occasions how Ronnie missed three easy reds. Before he got in to make the 92 clearance he only missed one attempted pot on a red. The other occasions were when he had run out of position. Also at the start of the match he starts by saying Ronnie is winning the safety exchange only to change that to ali is winning the safety exchange because Ronnie couldn't get position on a red. He is completely negative through out the whole frame. Safe to say, he completely ate his words. Not one of the best players in the world willie. The Best.
But that also shows how focused Ronnie was on winning this frame. How fast he changes his game plan is simply amazing. The moment you mentioned 3:26 is a great example. Most players would think "okay, end of break, there's no way I can get to a red from here. Time to look at where to place the cue ball for a safety". Ronnie just gives the table a quick glance, smashes the brown in and lands as good as he could have hoped for to continue the break.
Thing is Ronnie is so far ahead of what Willie Thorne was as player. Willie ground out matches and was completely lacking in flair and imagination. It's no wonder he comes across the same in commentary, he's unable to see the same possibilities as Ronnie.
I guess only a handfull (if that many) other players are able to see the table the way Ronnie does. I guess I don't need to mention his 5-cushion escape vs. Trump? Well, I kinda mentioned it anyway.... :/
Have i missed something! Why does Willie Thorne not like Ronnie O'Sullivan? The only man in the world who could have made that clearance, and Willie gave him no credit! I think the bbc should not have him as a commentator, far too negative for a special moment in snooker history.
really is willie a prick in this , I'll need to watch it again . the coolest clearance ever from ronnie unless you include what he done today . was against selby world masters 2016 one of the latter frames frame 7 or 8 or 9 case anyone reads this and does the youtube detective as I do.

He also said carter will be playing to take balls off the cushions in a minute....
Willie Thorne would do well to get above 20
You know he’s above the rest when even the commentators have no clue what he’s doing.
I love how they talk about each tricky shot as if it was the last. No slight on them, though, he just played it perfectly.
It's the only match of snooker I've ever seen that happen. Usually inferior players can at least see what's being attempted. Not here. The philosopher Schopenhauer once said 'talent is like an archer hitting a target the other's can't hit, genius is hitting a target they can't even see'
