- Hey, it's Mayim, and my family is a homeschooling family. A lot of families right now are finding themselves trying to throw together a homeschooling situation in the midst of school closures due to the coronavirus pandemic. And it's stressful! I asked my followers on Instagram what questions they're having, in the hopes that I could offer some wisdom from my years of homeschooling my two boys. It's an apples to oranges situation, for sure, but I hope I was able to give some advice that families will find helpful right now!

Homeschooling mom here. I just want to echo everything she is saying. Mayim, you said so much, so well. Thank you! Such a beautiful message and so, so accurate. I LOVE that you bring such focus to our children and their emotions and how that may play out. That their obedience isn't as important as being able to express their emotions. You nailed it with this!
I was just telling my dad the other day.... I know how many bumps in the road we've hit while homeschooling. Those bumps are hard. I have days of self-doubt and tears. I can't imagine having to navigate those bumps and those emotions on a road that you don't even wanna be on. I chose this road and want this road. I can't imagine not having that fuel behind me as I go. I have a high needs 6 year old boy who I've been homeschooling/unschooling his entire life. I'm here if any mama needs anything at all! I'll do my very best to help in any way I can.

I have a question what about kids that have something like adhd or dyslexia how does homeschooling work? Do you get help from the state to get your child help?
@@michelleelmore5533 I think the answer to this is a very personalized one. Some families do choose to utilize help from the state/public education system. Other families will go the route of working with someone in the medical field, like a pediatric psychologist or behavioral therapist. Some children need more help, some children need less. It's certainly not a cookie cutter answer here. I know that some districts do offer help for students who are struggling, but I personally have chosen not to utilize such help because (at least here where I live), that would also mean that I would have to subject my child to standardized testing and state-led assessments. Is there something particular that you're struggling with? I'll try to help any way that I can.

@Amb Amb Oh, I did home school my children some of their school career, but they are all grown with jobs of their own. I had a degree before I had children so why not use it and teach children in my empty nest years. :) I love teaching. I was mainly agreeing with the idea that parents are not "homeschooling" they are just supporting their children while they are at home. It is very hard for many parents and they are feeling a lot of guilt. They should not be feeling guilt but moms are famous for having that feeling at times.

I am a 60 year old woman. I say “Hats off!” to every parent out there dealing with educating their child/children.
Slow down. Be gentle with yourself and be kind to your kids.
They are actually listening to every word, believe it or not!
If you are genuinely doing your best, then you are doing just fine.
Consider the fact that it takes three months to actually institute anything new into anyone’s routine - to have it flow and feel normal. Be gentle.
Ask them for their cooperation; they will volunteer to cut you some slack!

You are your child's best teacher PERIOD! It is so freeing...we could come and go when we wanted like vacation times and ALSO when we woke up and went to sleep. These are important and studies are now showing that teens need more sleep than say a 5 year old. We really loved it and it was so fun!
I am sure that with a Mother like this, they will have a great education and be good human beings with their great example of life.
My best advice I can give as a homeschool mom is..”there is no normal.” If it works for you to wake up at 5am and get a routine started and wrapped up before 10am-do it. Conversely- if it also works for you to separate the learning hours into chunks varied throughout the day with different family members actively contributing..do it! Again- there is no “normal” there is only what is “normal for you.” As long as your child went to bed more educated and loved tonight then they did the night before- it’s a win! The best thing we can all give ourselves and each other this year is the gift of grace.
Just started homeschooling my child due to bullying before everything fell apart, best decision I've ever made! I work a small business from home and love the lack of the third party in my child's education. It is great! Many sources to choose from. We do have book curriculum, half online, Easy Peasy.

the idea of being homeschooled sounds like a nightmare. Something that overbearing moms do. Like basically like anti-vax adjacent. I can't imagine not having all those memories of being in class, gym, sports, dances, getting in trouble, having my own life outside of my parents. The thought of my mom controlling that aspect of my life would cause resentment. Good luck tho!

I can’t imagine having been stuck in school Monday thru Friday from K-12th grade. Homeschooling was great and allowed me more opportunities to learn that you don’t get in a classroom. And just so you know, homeschoolers come in all shapes and sizes. Definitely not a cookie cutter thing. There are super conservative homeschoolers and very liberal homeschoolers. It’s great that there is more than one option for parents to choose from for their children’s education. Everyone is different and that’s what makes homeschooling great. Homeschooling is also not for everyone so it’s not a big deal one way or the other. Just do what’s best for your family.
Ohhh having online options would be awesome! I was homeschooled off and on through grade school then homeschooled my last two years of high school after being diagnosed with a chronic condition. Somehow I did it...I graduated high school but it was tough. I was basically on my own to learn. I would have loved online classes.
@@TaylorGriffin-tl3qz bullying, rejection, confusion, insecurity, etc all are parts of growing up. Padding the walls of growth results in a weak person. I got my ass kicked many times. I was called names many times. I was told to go back to where I came from many times. But girls also had crushes on me. I was naturally bright and funny. You can't have the yin without the yang. Bullying sucks. It can't get violent. Very scary. And something should be done about it. But removing your child from social life isn't the best solution in my opinion. but hey, it seems like it worked out great for you so it seems like there are many paths to happiness and fulfillment so whaddya know?

We've been homeschooling for many years, since my oldest was about to enter kindergarten. I also tell the non homeschool moms that what they need is a lot of patience and not to compare to actual homeschoolers because they're not homeschooling. Also I hope that people who don't homeschool, don't think that we have our kids at home for many hours stuck at home like we're right now. Homeschoolers are also struggling with the situation with classes, park days, museums, and other field trips and events cancelled. Stay safe!

The way I look at it, it’s the end of the year. My kids would ordinarily be taking end of year tests; which are meant to test the kids on everything they have learned throughout the year. This means the meat of the work has already been covered. This is more review.
The kids are just as stressed and confused as we are. My kids seemed fine. I asked them how they felt and they said scared, so I talked them through it. School work is less of a priority than their mental wellbeing.
I’m being gentle with my kids. What gets done gets done. What doesn’t, doesn’t.🤷🏾♀️ These few weeks are not going to make or break their academic future.

I’m in college rn having to do online classes (pretty much the homeschool version of college). My heart goes out to a lot of college students who didn’t grow up as a homeschooled child, having to adjust from always having someone teach them things to having to teach yourself a lot of things. I was homeschooled for a bit and know how to manage all this, but I feel bad for other students who lack the knowledge or willpower to handle this.
Living in a society where everyone has such a negative opinion on homeschooling, I have to say, you made me, and probably many homeschooling moms, feel very encouraged, inspired, and validated!! THANK YOU!!
My school has suggested that families do 1.5-2 hours of schoolwork per day then focus on home / life skills eg: cooking, laundry, vacuuming, reading recipes, creating their own meals without a recipe based on ingredients avaliable
fudgmonkeys34 I don’t comment too often but I had to say this, tour school’s advice is so awesome! Smart school! As a homeschooling kid we used to do 4-5 hours of ‘classes’ (with breaks) followed by life things. We then dwindled it down to 2-3 followed by life things. That, what they recommended, just seems like a super awesome schedule! I truly hope more people around the world are getting such great advice from their schooling systems. I think this is a schedule that kids will really enjoy. And in turn, positively develop from. Happiness builds!👍
Omg, she answered every question and thought I had about homeschooling my kids with 2 working parents. I was drilling homework into my kids like they were in the military. Love the advice & reassurance to us parents whose going through this. She totally gets it.
Had an anxiety attack today about suddenly being thrown into being a teacher as well as still working (I work in a hospital) as well as trying to get everything done at home & still give them a great education, so thank you for this, I needed to hear it, especially phrased so wisely.
My youngest daughter home schools her two older children, 11 and 6. She has had great success, and their testing scores are great. Love your channel Mayim.

I homeschooled my kids 40 years ago and now my grandkids homeschool. When I was doing it, i was pretty much a Lone Ranger, Today there are lots and lots of resources. Where we are, there are park days, beach days, resource centers. It is an active, engaged community. The kids are rarely home--when not quarantined. See if there isn't a homeschool community near you. Other homeschooling moms will be happy to help you through it. Good luck.
There are many home school moms willing to help and answer question on youtube your are not alone. Hang in there. It will all make sense once you start doing it.
I am French, my daughter who at 11 years old receives lessons every day on the school site. the teachers do a wonderful job.

Thanks for this! My daughter is a child who enjoys going to school and has said on several occasions that she wouldn’t like to be homeschooled, but she was pleasantly surprised how quickly she was done with her day and seemed to enjoy it. I to was surprised how fluid of a homeschool mom I am and might consider continuing on homeschooling her. It’s a much less stressful day and she is less stressed.

Thats happening with us too! My son loves going at his own pace and being independent by accessing his various learning accounts. It's been less stress than when he was in school and came home a wreck every day. He's been reading an hour every day. I could never get him to open a book before. Anyway, I did not think I could do it and now I see that I can. Having low/no expectations really helped
I was scared of being home schooled as a child when we considered it, then when we started I noticed how much less stress I felt, it was wonderful. I’m so thankful for it, I wasn’t bored, I was de compressed, warmly close with my family, and very happy. I’m grateful that it was one of the best gifts that has ever been given to me. I graduated long ago, I’m thankful for my upbringing and wish to bring this up with my own kids in the future. But yes, like another commenter said, home scolded kids are home a lot, but they don’t stay home all day. We go out a ton. We are very adaptable to being home and keeping ourselves creative for very long periods of time at home, but we love being out, it’s a regular part of our life. I’m missing my friends and my job at this time, it’s hard for everyone. I hope you’ll all have a positive experience with home school! Your children will likely develop a closer attachment to you and to the deeper side of themselves because of it. And hopefully once this is all over, they can go outside too! :) I miss being social! With *physical* people!
As a mother of grown up children it is wonderful to hear your sensible logical easy way off helping. If you have never been at home all day with your children, never mind schooling them while working at home, you need to do what is best for, you do not know how the school systems work. We are not teachers and therefor we cannot do a job that we are not trained to do like the system. Love them hear them, laugh with them and remember as confused, scared and frustrated as we are by everything that is going on they are more so as they probably do not understand it and are scared. Relax watch movies, historical tv programs animal programs learning is learning about life too. Help you all survive be gentle with you all. The Principal is not going to turn up at your door and give you or your kids detention. Life with kids is hard.
My younger sister switched to homeschooling two years ago and it was the best thing for her! She's thriving, and now I think homeschooling is such an awesome way to educate.

@M Detlef Have you watched her channel for any period of time? She has told us her life story and being a 1%re is not her life. Maybe for 10 years she had the BBT money, but she was NOT paid like the original cast. So stop your BS!!!

@M Detlef She's one of the most earnest, down to earth people out there. She never told anyone whether they should or shouldn't get a divorce, and she never said she was happy to be divorced, either. Her divorce devastated her and she never hid that fact. She expresses empathy for people in all types of life situations. She's not talking down to people.
That said, I think I do understand why you are resentful listening to her advice. I'm sure she does have more money than most of us little people, and when you are truly struggling, even well intended advice from rich people can be received very bitterly.
Once when I was making minimum wage, I was very ill and barely dragging myself through life. I went to the doctor and he told me to just watch and wait and return to the office if my symptoms persisted. I told him that I couldn't return for another office visit because I couldn't get more time off work, I can't get a ride to the office, and I just can't afford it. Isn't there any way we could just skip this watch and wait step and just do something now? He responded by apologising, explaining he has to follow watch and wait protocol, and saying "the people who make the rules don't understand busy regular workers like us."
But he didn't get what I was saying at all. It wasn't just that I was busy. My car was broken down, I had to beg for rides to work, and if I lost my job I would have been evicted for failure to pay rent. I COULD NOT just simply return for another office visit if my symptoms got worse. I needed medical help NOW. I wasn't a "busy regular worker" like him. I was on the brink of destitution.
So yeah, I get it. When rich people think they are helping by giving us advice that we literally couldn't take even if we wanted to, even if we desperately want to... it can be very galling.
But I think Myam is genuinely giving good advice.
I've been a poor teachers aid in public schools and I've also homeschooled my daughter. Myam acknowledges that having to work and homeschool at the same time is VERY difficult, especially at first. Especially when you are trying to meet the criteria of a school system that doesn't understand homeschooling lifestyles. She's right when she says that setting your OWN schedule and planning your OWN syllabus makes homeschooling A LOT easier. But getting set up for that takes planning, and most people affected by the quarentine didn't have time to do that planning, they just got thrown into it. That's what she's saying, and she's not wrong. She does give good advice for adjusting to the situation. If you can be receptive to listening to what she's saying about finding your flow, you might see she's not talking down, she's only being real.
Sounds like you're really overwhelmed. I know how it is. I've been there, too.
I wanted to get it all done now, and I struggled against my daughter to do so. I was so afraid of falling behind. When I took a step back and allowed us both to just get things done at our own pace, and I researched ways to make it more fun for both of us, things got A LOT better. That's what Myam is saying, and she's 100% correct.
These are strange times. Allow yourself to relax about it. If things aren't perfect, that's ok. If everything doesn't get done at first, that's ok. Eventually it will come together.
She's SO RIGHT about fidgeting & doodling! It's a fine, nuanced art to be able to know when fidgeting or doodling is actually a helpful tool keeping your child in active learning flow... vs. when they are just using fidgeting or doodling as procrastination tactics. I could write a whole book on it. In fact, people have!
She's also correct about how kids are SO receptive adult's emotions. They soak in our emotions like little sponges, even if we try to hide it from them. They sense it. And they mirror it back to us in ways that can really exacerbate our own anxieties. It can make me feel like that yoga bird from Angry Birds. "Deep breath DEEP BREATH." So we have to find healthy ways to deal with our own emotions & our children's emotions. Self help & child psyche- two whole other sections of books/videos! 🤪
Who has time to sort all this out when they work full time? The answer: no one. Not all right now, not all at once, anyway. But eventually, little by little, you can.
Anyway, I don't think she's trying to talk down to anyone. She strikes me as such an empathetic human being.

What is at issue is how she was raised and the impact that life style has had on her. She was not spoiled or wild or some crazy child actor who landed in drug rehab. She was raised with strong family and religious values, that shines through her like a super Nova! This is one very grounded, thoughtful, hard working MOTHER! I've done homeschooling, public school, private school, public school (when the private school closed), and unschooling, in that order, with my son. The first and last were great and so easy compared to utilizing the private and public school system, where they teach at a pace where the least-abled child can understand, and where bullying is rampant.
Thank you for this! My daughter's elementary school teacher told us that the school has basically switched to a pass/fail system, so if they try, they'll pass. That help alleviate a lot of my anxiety about emergency schooling at home.
I feel very blessed right now to be a stay-at-home mom who can dedicate whatever time is needed to this crazy schooling situation. That being said, I was one of those annoying teacher pet overachiever types in school. And it has been really eye-opening for me to see up close and personal that my 9-year-old is NOT that way and that's okay too. She's quite artistic.. She's one of the doodlers you were talking about... And so I've been trying to incorporate some artistic things into her schooling this week. She had a fun time drawing and coloring a diagram of the life cycle of a frog this afternoon!
I'm trying to be flexible. Do a little bit in the morning and a little bit in the afternoon. Lots of breaks. Lots of snacks. Lots of sending them outside to play on the swing set. And of course lots of video games. But also lots of video chats with Grandma and cousins and their teachers and classmates.
Mayim, you are so wonderful! Your understanding, vision, and approach to education, and children in general ( including their feelings and emotions) deserve admiration!!! Your whole philosophy about this subject is simply THE RIGHT PHILOSOPHY! You see children as humans, and not little voiceless soldiers with no rights that just must obey the system's rules; rules that treat all kids the same disregarding their differences. I had never wanted to homeschool because both of us need to work to make ends meet, so having to work 10 hours and also have to try and make education a priority as well is really HELL... I do wish that i had more chance to learn more about how teaching is effective.
Not being able to socialize, not having safe outdoor space for them to play, and not having parental free time to educate are HUGE drawbacks to trying to do this during an already stressful time
I think your over-arching guideline "whatever you think this should look like, it's probably not going to look like that" is completely bang-on. We have been thrown into this situation. I am a classroom teacher trying to figure out what work I can give parents to do with their children for how ever long this lasts. I have been teaching for 21 years and I am constantly trying to figure out what works and what doesn't work. On a regular basis, my lessons don't turn out looking as I imagined...and that's okay. The children are still learning. I really commend parents for trying amid all of this turmoil. I think they should really take it easy on themselves and do what they can without driving themselves crazy. This too, will hopefully pass soon and we will start again. Don't worry parents, we will help your children from wherever they are when they return. I wish you all good health....the most important thing.
I would like to add that having choice built into your day/week is another way to manage motivation for children. If you are a to-do list type of person, try making a master list of things that you would like your child to get done during the span of a couple of days. Share the list with them and explain when the stuff should be done. Then let them choose what they would like to work on and when. This will also give you a good idea of what types of activities they enjoy. Also, even if your child is high performing in school, be willing and excited about sitting with them while they work. Let them bounce ideas off you. Be present. They will likely be more motivated if they see it's something they can do with you as opposed to something they have to do on their own (this is especially true for younger children).
I have become a huge fan. I am relating to so much of what you are sharing. I homeschooled my two daughters, single mom. They are young adults now, one has a baby and relates to your velcro baby and getting an average of 3 hours sleep at a time. Loving parents through this COVID time also resonates. My Mom had to go out for dill....sigh. Sharing your reality and vulnerability is a real gift. Thank you and as a mom whose homeschooled kids are now independent I can tell you it was a very special time of my life, I don't regret a moment! I also made life long friends of other homeschool parents. Again, thank you for sharing so much. You are very special.
I was homeschooled from 4th grade to graduation. We started with a highly structured routine. By the fourth year in, I wore the same pajamas for days and woke up when I felt like.
I have really been struggling with balancing working and helping my child with his school work. And I was also concerned about the fact that he might be rushing through and not spending enough time on all of it. This makes me feel so much better.
I was ready to disagree with your home school arguments. But darn it, you made good points. You would make a good politician Mayim. Think about it.
Coordinating teacher posted on fb for parents to remember, that teachers are training for 4 years (UK) to do their job and nobody is expecting parents to fullfill this function.
6 years in Germany until they are unsupervised.
I have 4 children, the oldest is 14, and they have never been in a traditional school. I have been doing this without a support group for years and it took me a long time to finally understand that there is no right or wrong way. It’s what is best for you and your family. I have family who are out of work and home with their kids asking “how don you do this everyday?” I can’t help but smile and tell them to breathe, it’s okay.

Wow, this was useful. Though probably not directly how you intended. I'm from Europe and currently my kids are 3 and 5. Just realising it's parents all over the world, not just this country or continent, are now going through the very same problem makes me feel connected.
Your tips do help as well! I get now why my oldest doesn't like school anymore. It's too simple at the moment. He's ready to start reading and writing, but will barely get to do that at school until september. That, and your explanation about a full class versus just one or two kids totally explains why it took us 2 hours last saturday to work through all of this week's set work. At the same time he seems scared of learning to read rather than excited. I guess that might be anxiety from the whole corona thing instead. Thanks for talking to us about this!
Yes thank you! We are a homeschool family... with all of this virus crap we are not homeschooling that way we normally do... this is not homeschooling, for most this is “crisis schooling”... we miss our outings, we miss our library, we miss our friends and interactions... we miss normalcy! Those of us who have been homeschooling all along are having a hard time too! Thank you for explaining in an easy to understand way the differences between expectation and reality of homeschooling ❤️

Yes!! Thank you! I homeschooled my girls from Pre-K to HS graduation (with my younger being a 2020 Covid-grad - what a weird time), and I have posted in our neighborhood discussion boards about this very thing. What people are doing now is 'crisis schooling'. It is being forced to do school work from home doing so with no preparation, control over content or delivery, or desire to do so, while also usually working at a full-time paid job. Ugh. I have the utmost respect for these parents who are powering through and doing their best. This is ugly and HARD. It's not what I did.

It is very nice to see somebody that actually is raising children from home sharing all the experiences that one might encounter.... I feel more and more that having your children at home and school them at home, many times can be a more peaceful experience, 🏡😊😏
We started homeschooling our 11 year old at the beginning of the year. Best decision ever. These poor parents that are thrown into it...I feel so bad for them. They dont know how to keep their brains from thinking if a 8 hr school day in a classroom. It takes time and 2 weeks isn't enough time to get that thought out of their heads. I just feel so bad for them
How long does your daughter spend each day with school?
@@christinamarin4875 it depends. Her attitude has a lot to do with that. If shes willing to go in and get it done 3 hours. If I have to fight her it can take 5 or 6 hours. The days I have to fight, we take a lot of breaks. It just goes smoother that way. There are days we start and it ends just as quickly. While school is important, puberty has hit and there are certain days there are alot of tears and frustration with just hormones, I dont fight nature. We take a day off

Awesome advice! We have been homeschooling for 2.5 years (after 2.5 years of public school) and I can attest to her advice especially the part about being gentle with yourself and your children. The adjustment period can be rough but with patience and grace you will find what works best for your family. ❤️
I think I always start my comments to you this way: I ABSOLUTELY LOVE YOU! I had this epiphany 2 weeks ago when our schools announced a 3 week closure. My initial reaction and declaration to my children was "We are not going to play video games, watch TV and eat all day. We are going to get stuff done!"
During the 1st week, my kids were on a schedule. Not a tight schedule, but a schedule. My Kinder son spent about an hour/day, my 5th grade son with emotional/ behavioral issues spent about 4 hrs and my 8th grade daughter who is currently an A+ student spent about 3. I was confused when my daughter took 3 hours to complete work for 6 classes.
We took the next 2 weeks off for Spring Break and will be ready to get back to it work, next week. I have already had the discussion with myself to breathe, be patient with my kids and with myself and whatever picture my mind is trying to paint regarding the remainder of the school year and how it should looks needs to be deleted because the absolute fact is we don't know and we shouldn't know because we have never before been in this situation.

I've homeschooled our kids for 15yrs and we're, as well as kids from our homeschool community, are also dealing with alot of the same things. Giving yourselves and your kids lots of grace right now is so important. ❤
I was raised on homeschool due to what was happening in the world and the location that we were at and ect! I grew up in the sticks!! We had a great curriculum with easy answer keys for my mom but let me tell you, this is hard to just be thrown into!! I wasn’t an easy student either! I had dyslexia, I had undiagnosed add....you parents are doing great. You truly are 🙏🏻🙌🏻

As a homeschool parent of 14 years I keep reminding my friends and family this... mostly to balking and “that’s just not the way life is”. We need reminders like this. I'm a fan of your channel from Germany. Seeing the title of this one I thought that this topic might not be for me - but what a fail in a positive way! Instead of giving tips on special activities or how to handle special things you made a wonderful overview on the situation of homeschooling as such that was both interesting and reassuring. I enjoyed it in a personal way thunking that nothing is perfect and sometimes simple and easy ways to cope with a situation like this has to be enough. I really like your way of talking, including profound knowledge of the topic and on the other hand always self-refelected with a blinking eye. Bravo 👏!
You are spot on about time in school vs time to learn anything. Some suggestions (I tutored and taught math using dominoes, cards, dice, candy land board game, and let kids use a whiteboard to write): Organize topics into short periods. If you make the activity interesting to the kids they will extend that activity on their own. Give small incentives for completing objectives. Also, make the activities more challenging as you go along. Challenge is one way to make something interesting.
What an amazing and encouraging video. We homeschooled our kids for a few years but put them back into public school some time ago due to our work schedule. What we’re dealing with now, the so called “distant learning” does not compare at all to homeschooling. We have no control of what is being done and have to follow a schedule that seems to be even more stressful than the regular school days. It’s been taking us over 7 hours daily to finish all the “busy work” assigned. I’m glad I have some homeschool experience and have kept expectations quite low especially during these unprecedented times. But most parents don’t have that and that’s why so many are loosing their minds over it. It’s been very hectic for everyone, but I feel especially bad for kids that don’t have a good support system in their daily lives. I’ll be sharing your video in hopes of helping some of my friends that are struggling with schooling their kids from home.
Being rested, is very importat to be patient, and also understanding what a child, and what an adolescent really is. When you understand that, patience comes to you, magically, since you don´t expect anything that a child or an adolescent cannot give or do. Such understanding, prepares you animically for only recieving/ expecting what they really can give.
Thank you for putting it into a different prospective. I was beginning to feel like a bad parent because I am having difficulties with structure. I don’t force the education on my daughter (she’s only in Kindergarten, but still), she tends to do it on her own. She’s learning to spell and learning to read and write. I tend to have more educational apps on her iPad which helps, I think. It’s great to see her come out in the morning right away with a pencil and her little notebook ready to write. She loves coloring, drawing, music, reading, writing, and math. I haven’t structured her day, but I can SEE she’s learning in her every day activities which makes me less stressed on if she’s learning or not. What you’ve said here has made me less stressed and will help me lower my expectations (which are always high 🤦🏽♀️). Thank you!
I was able to homeschool my son beginning when he was 12. It started out of necessity and the synchronicity that occurred, allowing me to stay home and provide a quality education experience for him on a shoestring budget, was amazing.
The key things I found that made this work so well for us where these:
I determined his learning style and developed a curriculum to support that. Learning is much easier if it makes sense and is fun - yes having fun, enjoying the process, is key and that process looks different for each child depending on their learning style.
Structure and flexibility were key for us. The time required by our state was an average of 4 hours/day for a specific number of days per year. We found it easy to cover the basics in that time. Having a specific schedule, what needed to be completed, made staying on task and doing the work easier as well. My son learned how to focus on completing his tasks within that timeframe because he knew he couldn't move on with his day until his work was done.
We also learned the importance of learning HOW to learn; a self guided process of discovery through research, and how to be discerning in accessing relevant and accurate information online. As he became better at this I was able to be less hands on and move from the role of teacher to that of administrator.
This worked well for us because we were able to plan and work together to create a system that worked for us. I also made it clear that not doing the work was not an option and my son was on board with the process.
A key to succeeding in homeschooling IMO is to think outside the box. Don't try to recreate "public school" at home, do a little research into how others are doing it (I found some great books through the local library). And, most of all, relax and enjoy the process - it's not rocket science 😉.
I am a middle school special education teacher. I agree with so much of what you have said. I was a homeschool kid myself, it's very different. Most of what I am assigning my students online right now is about processing their feelings. That's what I want from them right now. It is far more beneficial for them than any other assignment.

I'm a 74-year-old Jewish male practicing law in Michigan. I don't keep Kosher, I drive, eat out, work from time to time in my office on Saturday, etc. All that said, Mayim, you are my hero. I "kvell" over the fact my granddaughter has Mayim to look up to on your Blog, your Website, and on "Big Bang" reruns. I look up to you on all things.
Phenomenal video, I have been homeschooling my daughter for years. I focus on two subjects at a time get her in-depth knowledge and then provide worksheets to solidify the knowledge. Once that is done for two months then move on to another subject.
Yes yes yes! All of this. We are all living in crisis right now. I am a homeschooler, so I thought we’d just continue on as normal, but even we are feeling the strain of the global crisis and it has changed how we are approaching life and school too.

A homeschool blogger referred to what parents are going through right now as crisis schooling. That term really resonated with me. Even though I have always homeschooled my 10-year-old daughter I feel like this applies to me as well. Our homeschooling days look very different than normal. We typically spend a lot of time out in the community doing things. If I could share one piece of advice with parents suddenly schooling at home it would be to read aloud with the whole family...whatever the kids are interested in. It’s special time, soothes anxiety, and can literally be school right now. ❤️
Homeschooling was great for me. 11 years of my life. Learned to love learning and find my passion in music, resulting in an academic full-ride in undergrad and then two masters degrees in music. Everyone learns differently and needs the opportunity to follow their passions.
Mayim, you amaze me with your insight. I am a retired teacher, and you are so right about accomplishing MORE in LESS time, with just your own brood!! Parents are now seeing WHY teachers have to assign consequences when children dilly dally! Set up your home school around a Montessori model - instructing through a child's hobbies!
What you say is spot on. These are unprecedented times. Just like restaurants who are under order to only serve takeout and delivery, when prior they were strictly dine-in establishments, our school systems were not set up or designed as homeschool curriculum or online learning. It’s a learning curve for all, to figure out what works, what doesn’t, and how best to proceed going forward. Also we need to bear in mind that a lot of parents may also be trying to work from home, as well as see to their kids education, which is something they have never done previously. I don’t have kids, but I do have young nieces and nephews who are going through this. One thing I’ve heard from their mom, is that the teachers have put weekly deadlines, or due dates on lessons...they have to be submitted by a certain time/date. I totally disagree with that, and hope they change it soon. The kids are having to make so many adjustments already. I’m not saying it should be a free for all, with no accountability. The kids should be able to work at their own pace, report in regularly with proof of progress, and it should be up to the parents to figure out the best schedule or routine for their kids. I know everyone is having to wing it right now. There shouldn’t be the pressure of deadlines or due dates. No one is going anywhere for the foreseeable time being, and schools will not likely reopen for the rest of the term. So we need to be patient, exercise self-care (parents and kids), and give ourselves a bit of grace so we can get through this, just as you suggested.

Hi...having worked in the school system, I see many flaws in the education of our children. Having them be independent thinkers is greatly downplayed; recognizing children learn in different ways & at different times...which is normal & ok. Mayim is so right in her assessment of these being extremely unique times, not only for adults but for our children too. DO NOT feel the pressure of having to be the teacher...b/c you're not, your mom & dad.
Adjusting is very hard, give yourself & the kids "a break", this is important to keep all from unnecessary & added stress.

Sage advice Mayim. I think that you hit several nails on the head. Now that our 'mad rush society' has been forced to slow we are discovering or rediscovering that we need to be more patient with ourselves. Hence that translates over to our children, and other loved ones. As a Wise Person once said "Patience is a virtue." And that's so true. Peace be with you and your family.
Decided to pull my son out of pre-K just before this crisis began. Deschooling is the hardest part of it all. Looking forward to begin our unschooling adventure. Mayim is a great inspiration!
Thank you for making this. I'm new to homeschooling and my sons are in 4th and Pre-K. We chose to start homeschooling not only due to the pandemic, but I'm also pregnant. My older son is really smart but has a hard time with new schools. Where we live, 4th and 5th grade is in a separate school from K-3. I'm really excited for this journey and I love how many resources there are out there. 🥰
I'm a new homeschool parent, 2 months in. While the act of helping my kids learn at home is still the same during this quarantine/social distancing time, we are still struggling. We can no longer take trips to the library which we utilize for learning resources but also for play & socializing. We can't go ice skating for gym class or to the grocery store to practice money skills for math. We are missing out on learning & socializing while at 4H meetings & activities (us parents are missing this, too). We are missing our field trips that supplement our lessons, & are one of the best parts of homeschooling. I'm having to rearrange lessons & come up with different ideas because a large portion of them were to be taught on location & those trips are canceled. I have exhausted so many tricks to keep them engaged & keep even myself engaged but My kids are bored & I'm bored.
Mayim is right, kids can learn & do schol work faster at home, so it's ok if their work is done in 2 hours or less.
Thank you for this encouraging video Mayim. We start online learning on 14th here in NZ. I have had alot of anxiety and concerns over it. I struggle with mental illness (BPD) so even kust having the kids home with me during holidays is usually stressful enough. Let alone throwing in homeschooling (huge reason why i don't homeschool!) I really like what you said about your youngest being able to sense your emotions. I think one of the things we forget is the management of this massive change we're going through: management of the self, management of you relationship with others (who we now unable to interact with physically whenever we want, say parents or grandparents, or relatives and friends living abroad), and this brings a lot of anxiety. I think a lot of us (and myself included) feel a great level of anxiety about the current situation (about, but also definitely beyond the home-situation), and I feel we've not been raised in a generation that deals with that stress well. Completely understandable that your children would sense that. Great video, thanks for sharing this!

I had a friend talking in my ear about homeschooling. I said Noooooottttt for me. And then the pandemic hit. We were going to have to school from home anyway, so I decided to give it a try. It has been the best thing we could have done for my son. He is excelling and I’m learning so much about how he learns, what motivates and excited him. We have more flexibility for extra curricular activities. Plus I get to be involved in his learning and growth process. I hope to continue this journey for a long time.

As someone who has both homeschooled and been a school teacher I would like to say that one of the things I have learned about getting children engaged in learning is to ask them what they want to learn and then help them find the right resources to learn that. I think in life it will be more helpful to know how to learn what you need to learn than to acquire any specific knowledge or skill.

I've been homeschooling for 10 years now and I agree with with your way and why. It seems a lil overwhelming at first, but you do have to find your groove.
As a former teacher, former school board member, child advocate and mom to 3 neurodiverse children, I applaud you giving and holding space to support parents through this elearning, homeschooling and unschooling journey during this unprecedented time. Meaningful engagement with our children involves a multi sensory approach that follows their innate evolutionary programming and unique learning style.
