So many Van songs that some people don't realize are spiritually uplifting This happens to be one of them All his music has such a variety of different vibes He's up there in my top 10 for sure
This is the album I heard first of Van's - now I'm in another time, another place and another face. 50 years of listening to this has kept me sane at times. The album "Veedon Fleece" is next, an unbeatable duo of musical talent.
Not even Van himself made another album like it. I'm not sure anybody ever will. Kind of a happy accident. Richard Davis never gets enough credit in general, but his efforts here cannot be overstated. He is a very interesting Musician, well worth a look at projects he was involved in.
Astral Weeks is my favorite of Van’s albums. Fortunate to have seen him live three times. One concert was at UCLA around 1997 or 98 as part of a triple bill (!!) which also included Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell. AMAZING.
This song is from 1968, and Morrison continues to sing of lost love, death, and nostalgia from his youth in the Celtic soul that would become his "signature." Astral Weeks shows Van The Man's talent for mystic poetry, unique grooves, and romantic incantations still resonates today. Songs like 'Wavelength,' 'Someone Like You,' Listen To The Lion' or anything from his live album "IT'S TOO LATE TO STOP NOW" are excellent. It's the best album to hear Van The Man live and burning down the house.
This is such a brilliant start to such a beautiful album. I learned to strum acoustic guitar to this album. Wonderful, self-driving rhythms. It’ll get your fingers strong! Next is “Beside You”, which would fit in on Miles Davis’ ‘Kind Of Blue’, with Van’s voice taking the trumpet’s part. Then “Sweet Thing”, more like this… The album is classic; sounds like nothing else.
Love the visitation of the flute in the conversation of instruments. Van is so cool. He knows just what to do with each instrument, each sound, including his voice.
So, having heard this on FM when released, it still remains on my playlist unlike 95% of the music from then. It is simply the best album of music from that time, or most other eras since.... "Madame George" is unequalled. (Also interesting that the acoustic bass is pretty much the lead instrument & Ron Davis said that the session (jazz) musicians only got the chords from Van & pretty much improvised their way through this, cashed their checks & forgot about this. It was only constantly being asked about this LP for decades after that they realized it was special.)
This album is ranked 2nd in Mojo Magazine's 1995 list of 100 Greatest Albums of All Time, only seconded to Beach Boys' "Pet Sound". Strongly suggest to check his album "Into the Music" and live album "It's Too Late to Stop Now" too.
Haven’t heard this in years, I’m not that familiar with this album although I know the majority of his other albums so thanks for refreshing my memory, loved it
This album really defies description; bits of folk, jazz, rock, blues, soul, and classical - it moves seamlessly between them all. Quite rightly it frequently ends up in Top 10 lists of the greatest albums of modern music. You need to do the whole album to discover the overall magic of this record. Timeless indeed.
This may be Van Morrison's greatest album, but I don't think it gets the attention it deserves, even compared to his others. BTW: The bass player, Richard Davis, is the star of the album, and I think was the leader of the backing band for Van on this album.
More Van? The whole of the Astral Weeks album is an absolute must. It will refresh your mind and soothe your soul and take you to all sorts of of places and introduce you to all sorts of people that seem both ordinary and mundane and infinitely cosmic simultaneously... that's Van's art, his superpower, as I see it... Definitely a good one for driving through that 'corn-wheat field', or doing the weekend chores, or lying on your bed in the dark and just letting your mind wander free...
Whole album is 🔥. How about that stand up bass? As for Caravan, you should watch the live performance from his movie It's Too Late To Stop Now. The song is meant to be a laid back groove. The Last Waltz performance was way too rushed.
Wasn't bothered about this album on the first listen, two listens later and I'm wondering is it top 10 or top 5. Seen Van a couple of years ago and he was amazing. Also, one of the biggest assholes in music!
Astral Weeks and Veedon Fleece are VM’s best work. Simply the best artist of the rock/pop/blues/soul/folk era. All his other work might not achieve those two peaks, but ALL of his music is superior to everyone else.
Are you for real? Astral Weeks is as good as any album ever made and Veedon Fleece is great too, but to claim that he is thr greatest artist when - to name just a few - Neil Young, The Beatles, The Who, Leonard Cohen and, above all others without a doubt, Bob Dylan, exist is clearly ridiculous. And then to compound the nonsense by claiming that ALL (your capitalisation) his music is superior to everyone else, well that really is one of the stu pidest things I've ever seen on the internet. A lot of his later work is dull, repetitive, formulaic forced sprituality-by-numbers.
This song changed me on a cellular level. It’s perfect. Way up in the heavens. ❤❤❤
One of the best albums ever made (1968).
Entire album is a bonafide masterpiece. The bass is incredible throughout.
Simply my favorite album ever!
Oh man. One of my absolute favorite albums, this CD was on heavy rotation in my life when I was in college. Still love it. Sweet Thing....
the first album always a go to, the best debut record ever 1969 all tracks are magic and dont get old with time
A great album no doubt, but was his second and released 1968.
So many Van songs that some people don't realize are spiritually uplifting
This happens to be one of them
All his music has such a variety of different vibes
He's up there in my top 10 for sure
This is an Amazing Album!
Great choice.
Loved this album since 1970.
Thanks for sharing brother.
May God bless you and your family.

Veedon Fleece is an overlooked classic. Every bit as good as Astral Weeks. Fair play to you! 🍀
@@robbiemontgomery581 Veedon Fleece is better than Astral Weeks
It's great but clearly inferior to Astral Weeks.
No way, AW is better

He played with Sarah Vaughn in the late 50's and 60s -- legendary!!!

The wheeling dance between the flute, bass, and guitar...
I love Van Morrison.

I love the amazing stand-up bass throughout this album by jazz legend Richard Davis.
This song, this album, hit me HARD in 1968 and 57 years later it still does !!
Love the visitation of the flute in the conversation of instruments. Van is so cool. He knows just what to do with each instrument, each sound, including his voice.
Musical genius!!
Sweet Thing..is my favourite. Live Crystal Ballroom 1971.
fill my spirit with joy ... wow ... so good

23 years old when he wrote this. Van is the man.
This Album should be listened to in your times woe and sorrow. Touches your heart forever.

The man. The Legend, He speaks to everyone with a soul.
Astral Weeks/Veedon Fleece
From Veedon Fleece, "Streets if Arklow" is a great tune.

Excellent album.
Thanks Shawn if you love that you gotta check out Cypress Avenue. Similar vibe but even more beautiful in my opinion.
So good!
Please do “Sweet Thing” from the same album. His best song IMO
this is bluesy soulful introspective melancholy stuff
Haven’t heard this in years, I’m not that familiar with this album although I know the majority of his other albums so thanks for refreshing my memory, loved it
I see Van I click like ❤
Outstanding..thanks..

Yes. We set an example for our children. Good or bad. Better to be a good example, or at least that they know the difference.
Van the Man, man. 😎
My favorite Van Morrison output -- it's the instruments and the free, jazzy expression -- takes me to another level!!

Thank you 🙏🙏
Van is the man.
Have a listen to the single by The Marmalade: Reflections of my life. In 1970 stationed at Da Nang AFB Vietnam this was our anthem.

best track on the album by a mile is Madame George
No, every track is awesome, but the best are Sweet Thing and Beside You
Take a chance on another VM classic: “On Hyndford Street,” which is uniquely beautiful. Talk about story telling.

Was he describing an actual astral trip?
