You could also add (or subtract) a number to (from) each side, then solve to get the same result. Take your last example... 693-307. Add 3 to both sides and you get 696-310, which is an easier problem to solve. Both result in the same answer... 386. With an earlier problem... 583-271. You remove 1 from each side, giving you 582-270. Again, both result in the same answer... 312. It's all about playing around with numbers to make it easier to solve in your head.
I realised after watching these videos that just by going from left to right subtraction becomes very simple. Using 687 - 298 as an example. First off, 6 minus 2 is 4, but the next pair of digits are 8 and 9, which would be less than 0 so carry one back, and write down 3. Repeating the same 18 - 9 is 9 and the next pair of digits are 7 and 8 would be less when 0 so carry one back and write down 8. Leaving 17 and 8 so write down 9. Which leaves you with the number 389. It's that easy.
Dude oh my God! What a refreshing way to do Maths. I am flabbergasted! Kudos to you for showing these techniques to most of us who are not that acquainted with fast mental maths.
I have been using your videos in my Maths classes, as I teach Orthodox Jewish boys, and most videos are 'unsuitable' for various reasons. Yours are clear and save me having to draw it on the whiteboard. Also, the boys enjoy your simplification of various processes. We enjoy your straightforward approach (no music or fancy graphics).
@@marklinton-smith9137 I mean if you don't want music that's fine... But you have a problem with "fancy graphics". Wtf? What does that even mean? At what point do graphics become "fancy"? And why should they not be allowed. It's not like they're showing anything indecent. They're just showing maths and it makes it more engaging. If you are only allowed to use very basic, dumbed down, black and white graphics, then that's not very good for your brain. Your brain will also become dumbed down and lose life energy
Thank you for this excellent video. This must be the first time in my life that Ive ever done maths, and used the words . . . . Fun and easy in the same sentence. I’ve always wanted to be better at maths, and not to rely on a calculator. This will help. 👍
You helped me so much. Oh my gosh. I was the victim of no child left behind math curriculum. Just because when I was in elementary it wasn’t clicking, all I needed was encouragement . But they then and there decided I was sped. They make you do it so senselessly and baby you through school. I was left with nothing.
8:33 - Thanks to your previous videos, for this one I just did 455 minus 320 to get 135 and added back the one (136)! That was a lot easier for me than to add 81 to 55 mentally.
Typically the way I do it is by breaking away the tens and ones, finding the difference, then subtracting the hundreds and thousands and either adding the difference (if the tens and ones on the right / bottom are larger than the tens and ones on the left / top) or subtracting it (if they're smaller.) So for example, with 583 - 271, I find the difference between 83 and 71 (counting up from 71, 9 + 3 =12), then I find the difference between 500 and 200 (300), then I add the two values together (300 + 12 = 312); if it were 571 - 283, I'd do the same thing, but it would be 300 - 12 (288)
You can also add the same amount to both numbers and then subtract straight away. This works since subtraction measures the distance between both numbers. The distance is not affected in this method.
complimentary numbers add up to 100 :-) another way to look at this ... really enjoying your methods - ive just been forced into an accounting role so Im looking at ways to make myself more comfortable and confident about how i work things out :-) loe problem solving
The issue isn’t doing subtraction the issue is subtracting at lighting speed when I’m brain dead from a day of talking to people and just being tired. I have to do math at the drop of a dime after counting money and then people throw in random fkn change after you already came up with the answer. And I’m to tired fkn subtract that quickly. I used to be able to but my brain has been completely mashed potatoes for over a month.
who else when doing mental math just like visulize column method and try to do the borrowing method in your head. i do it most of the times it hurts my brain
304 - 185 3-1=2 Next No. Is 8-0 so take an extra 1 from your original 2=1 The difference of 10 - 8 =2 Next No. Is 5-4 so take an extra 1 from your 2 (10-8) =1 Leaves 5-4 the difference of 5 from 10 =5 +the remaining 4 = 9 So if I have explained this correctly then 304-185=119
start from left to right 45 to 50(+5) , -50 from 92=42 +5=47, but don't forget when you start from the left the answer will be neg(-47). hope this is helpful
Or 301-185=119 Take 1 from 9=8 Take 8 from 9 =1 Take 5 from 10 =5 Then Add (right to left) 5+4=9 1+0=1 8+3=11 throw away the first number ( in this case 1(or 10)) which leaves 1 Therefore =119
You can also just subtract the 2 numbers from left to right. Starting with the first positive result, glance at the next column to the right. If the top number is less than the one below it, subtract an extra 1. Continue to the last pair. If u get 7-9 for example, just imagine 17-9. This is more natural than carrying all the ones right to left.

185
3-1=2
Next No. Is 8-0 so take an extra 1 from your original 2=1
The difference of 10 - 8 =2
Next No. Is 5-4 so take an extra 1 from your 2 (10-8) =1
Leaves 5-4 the difference of 5 from 10 =5 +the remaining 4 = 9
So if I have explained this correctly then 304-185=119
In the last example, it's easier to add 30 to 828 and than take away 1.
Actually it's easier to subtract 1,000 then add 430 then subtract 1
There is no audio.
Can you do this with 2 digit numbers
u earned a subscriber :)))
I'm struggling on the 45-92. I can't do it sub 5 seconds.
start from left to right 45 to 50(+5) , -50 from 92=42 +5=47, but don't forget when you start from the left the answer will be neg(-47). hope this is helpful
Just -5 of the 92 then -40 = 47
Just switch them and do the same! When you get the answer put - first like -47
Love it...
Or
301-185=119
Take 1 from 9=8
Take 8 from 9 =1
Take 5 from 10 =5
Then
Add (right to left)
5+4=9
1+0=1
8+3=11 throw away the first number ( in this case 1(or 10)) which leaves 1
Therefore =119
Sorry but I put in 301 instead of 304
amazing technique.
You can also just subtract the 2 numbers from left to right. Starting with the first positive result, glance at the next column to the right.
