I record 100% analog,but I still have latency problems with the virtual instruments on my laptop.Even if you don't use a computer based DAW to record,you can still suffer from latency issues if you use virtual instruments.
Important distinction with modern computers (from any manufacturer) is that the CPU is no longer the important factor. The performance of the motherboard and the usb bus are FAR more important when considering if a particular computer will give you latency. A fast CPU on a low end motherboard is like a Ferrari motor in a VW bus.
I use to have a slow PC desktop using Protools 7/8. Had a crazy amount of latency. I basically had zero latency because I would mute the input of the Protools session so I didn’t hear the latency. I don’t record with effects, If I recorded with effects I don’t think I would have been able to do that.
Hey Mitch?! I'm currently on an older 2013 intel i7-4770, 16gb ram, 256gb m.2 SSD iMac that I got "as is/bricked" for $50 and refurbished myself. NeRd! Ha! Unfortunately, my current interface is a Focusrite 18i8 Gen2 which works great, but is limited to USB 2.0 with some glitches with 3.0, and I'm stuck within Thunderbolt 2 for anything potentially faster. Ideally I would like a U/A Apollo Twin MkII Thunderbolt 2 model, which is out of my current budget, but I've also noticed that Zoom came out with the TAC2 & TAC2r TB2 interfaces more than a few years ago, and since I'm honestly only wanting the potential latency advantages for vocals and/or guitar sim processing? My big ask is... Would getting something like those older Zoom Thunderbolt 2 interfaces secondhand potentially work as a temporary placeholder until I can afford the U/A Apollo, or are the drivers soo outdated that I'd be wasting my time? Thanks for watching! If your 18i8 is working well, I’m not sure what the advantage would be to moving toward another older interface? Instead of spending that money twice (on a “placeholder”), put it directly toward what you really want? I do recommend that you ensure there will be operating system compatibility with whatever interface you choose. I believe that the 2013 iMac tops out at 10.15 Catalina - just make sure that whatever hardware and software you get supports that OS (the Thunderbolt Twin requires Catalina or higher, so you’re good there). @@sweetwater Thank you Mitch! That makes a lot of sense. I've thought about boosting my Mac to an unsupported OS past Catalina, but honestly? That comes with it's own set of problems. Also IMO? Within the world of audio I've learned over the years that "if it aint broke? Don't fix it!" Haha. It doesn't take the newest thing to achieve good results with audio, and I was able to get his once little iMac "bricked" paperweight capable of now hitting well above it''s weight class with a just little elbow grease : ) Once again... i been recording in pro tools with a intel i7 getting cpu error all the time tracking at 128 buffer i think it might be time to get a apple silicon chip😩
Have you considered upgrading the hardware in your computer if it’s not maxed out already? I used to run off a 2013 MacBook Pro and it was a nightmare to get through sessions until I maxed out the RAM and upgraded the internal HDD to an SSD. Another thing that helps tremendously in regards to alleviating overall CPU load is an external SSD to save your DAW sessions and/or sample libraries to. You may be hip, but I hope this helps! So you use tape? How does that even work, cutting it together like that?
