  • 14 Minesweeper Variants Part 2 - all hail the 9. This is my favorite variant so far, where some mines are worth more than others and nines (and above?) can show up. How high can we get?

    The logic from Tyler is absolutely nuts. I can ever so slowly work my way to understanding the thoughts behind the logic, but at like 5% the speed. Midnight (EST) has been my favorite time of day for the past few months. Loving the logic games!

      @felipevasconcelos6736 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      @laith it would be, if it were true. It very much isn’t, though.
      Almost every language has words for numbers until 20 or so. Pirahã, a very unusual language linguists have heated conversations about, only has words for 1, 2 and “many”, but it’s extremely unusual in that and a lot of other aspects. More controversially, Daniel Everett, the guy who studied it back in the 1980’s claims it falsifies Universal Grammar, which the very influential linguist Noam Chomsky had proposed a few decades before, but it’s very difficult to determine whether Everett’s analysis was correct since no one speaks the damn language outside of him and the Pirahã, and the whole thing is very confusing.
      Anyway, languages have very varied counting systems. The ones indigenous to New Guinea are particularly fun, Telefol uses base-27, and Kalam uses base-23. I don’t know what they mean by “indigenous languages”, since every natural language is indigenous to some place, but they probably mean “native to a culture that hasn’t been extensively globalized”. Whatever they mean, not having words for numbers larger than 2 isn’t common anywhere.

    I wonder if we'll get to see Tyler use a uniqueness-based argument in one of these (i.e. arguing that _because_ the generator guarantees that all the puzzles are uniquely solvable, you can disprove a mine placement that would lead to a mandatory 50/50).

    4:08 you actually got a bit lucky here, as while the grey you flag is guaranteed, it was possible with the clues you knew for the black to be a flag, since the 1 still had a black square adjacent to it that was NOT adjacent to the 3. if that has been a mine, then both the black and grey squares above the 3 would also have been mines.

    • @btf_flotsam478
      @btf_flotsam478 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm curious as to how it would actually be solved (I had a similar comment in the previous video where that happened).
      Edit: The 4 in the bottom row means at least one black square next to the 4 in the middle column has a mine, which in turn means the square with the 9 does not have a mine. This means the 4 in the middle column and the 1 next to it act as a 2-1 pair, giving the 1 at the bottom-right; this forces a mine and completes the 3.

    • @syaba2327
      @syaba2327 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@btf_flotsam478 the gray square top-left from the 3 is 100% a bomb since the 3 couldn't be all three of the black squares due to the 1, which means the middle 4 has two unknown bombs
      we know the 4 on the left must use the gray square since the three black squares couldn't suffice, which means we know the middle 4 will also use one of those bombs/black squares to the left and below it
      so now we know the middle 4 needs one more black square, and we know that the 7 can share at minimum 3 bombs with the 4 (Tyler explained at 3:37)
      since we know it isn't the grey square top-left from the middle 4, then that means every other bomb that the 7 shares with that 4 is a bomb (which leaves the black squares left and right of the middle 4)
      because the black square to the right of the middle 4 is a bomb, that satisfies all three of the bombs that the 3 needed, so all the other squares could be cleared (including the one Tyler clicked)

      @@syaba2327 why wouldn’t the configuration of the middle 4 having the right and bottom squares be a mine work? At this point of the video it seems possible that the bottom left 4 could have the grey square and the black squares on top and right being mined while the middle 4 has the mine at the top right square with 2 mines at the bottom and right of it. It satisfies the 1 so the 3 could have the grey square and black square on top (where the original comment said he got lucky) of it being mines. At the same time the top 3 squares of the 7 could be mines to complete it

      I always found the elusive 8 to be fascinating and satisfying. Cause whenever an 8 showed up in the regular game you essentially received a free 8 mines (as every square around the 8 is a mine).

    Tyler: This 3 combined with this 2 tells us there's no mine in these squares. then we have this 5 combined with the 4 combined with a 2 tells us no mine in this corner. Then we follow the pythagorean theorem and take the square root of this 4 to find the two squares with no mines, but we know 3 more mines because 5 + 3 = 8, and 3 is a prime number, so if we follow the opening lyrics to mambo number 5 we can solve for X, which is 2

    I have a nice logic to uncover some tiles
    It looks at the 2 adjacent numbers and tiles that they don't share.
    It says, for example in your case in the beginning
    3 next to 4: 4 - 3 = 1 which means that *left of 3 is exactly 1 less mine than right of 4*
    2 in the corner says that *at least 1 mine is left of 3, which means that at least 2 are right of 4*
    This logic also applies up and down (if one number is above the other), not just left and right (and also to triangular and hexagonal minesweeper)
    Similarly, right after you have 2 on the left border and 2 next to it
    Since left of left 2 is 0 mines, therefore right of right 2 is 0 mines
    Than 2 and 3 right after that:
    There is exactly 1 mine left of 2, therefore 2 mines right of 3

    Logic games are my favorite because they don't depend on randomness to often

      I wonder if a puzzle game could be built around determining when or where randomness is in play.
      Like a "one of these things doesn't follow the logic" thing

      @@WukongTheMonkeyKing I think at one point I saw a puzzle game where you could push a 'this is impossible' button and you'd win/lose on the spot depending on your guess

    From all the minesweeper I have played i'm 99% sure mines need a number to exist so there couldn't be 4 mines on a corner like it's seen in 12:19 . Am i wrong?
