Best, most transparent video ever! Thank you for being forthcoming. You likely sold more pools than any other pool builder that hesitates to give this level of detail.

I agree with this whole heartedly. I happen to have a very similar pool like this already in our back yard. I am
Going to build myself another pool for my kids to play basketball in and for me to have a spa for my health. Plus I was a Sun ledge are where it is flat and just deep enough to do stretches and such. I want that connected to the spa to heat up. This is going to be something to take care of myself. I also intended to have. Starting budget if $100K. I knew I would likely go over that. Your video helped a ton.

Woo, pools have gotten expensive! We spent $54k on ours in GA with a pool and spa. I’m sure it’s probably doubled by now. We had unexpected expenses like adding a gas line from our meter which was about $1500 and we had to get a bigger gas meter from the gas company for the heater. My tip to everyone is make sure you register your pool equipment for the warranty, within our first year our pool pump died and was replaced for free!

Awesome video…Our pool was completed April of last year. Our initial fantasy budget was $100,000….Final cost:$150,000. Despite that additional cost…We love our outside oasis. Worth every penny. Your pool and everything that you have done to your yard is absolutely amazing.🎉❤

What a gorgeous backyard. Money well spent, given you can afford it. (How many people overspend and lose it?) Why be ashamed? It's your home and your life. Your videos are not just entertainment, but do a great service for viewers, whether looking to buy, upgrade or remodel. Isn't this a big part of that? This video is real life, not made up numbers or reality show. Much thanks for sharing this, I, for one, very much appreciate and love it.

You're bot such fantastic speakers who make a lot of sense. Your honesty is so appreciated even if I think those numbers are crazy but if you love and enjoy your space over the next 15-20 years then it is well worth it @ $11,713 so it's not all that bad if you have all that money in one go.. I love your space, well done.

I work for a major pool company and the first thing I tell customers when I see they only chose a heat pump is that they may want to consider a heater/chiller instead. Florida gets hot as heck and you’ll be using that chiller WAY more than the heater. Also, your pool looks amazing and that price is amazing as well!!

Excellent video, one of best and most informative on internet. You two should do informational videos full time! Built my house in 1994 and added a pool upon completion. It was 16x32 with 6 person jacuzzi, spillway, in ground cleaning system, salt system, 1000sf of decking and a screen room. It cost $22,000! Getting ready to build new house and budgeting $75k, but doing basic small pool and doing rest myself.

This was incredibly useful! We're installing a 20x40 rectangular pool (plus spa) here in Texas and received a quote of $133K, all-inclusive. It doesn't cover the stunning rock waterfall, but aside from that, and not considering the damages you had to address, our pool design is somewhat simpler. I believe our figures are quite comparable. This video has given me the confidence to proceed. Thanks Amy!

Interesting video, my parents have a nice large backyard and never wanted a pool saying the cost and hassle was just too much. I understand now what they meant as $175k pool is about double my house which I bought in 2005. I live in a small house with a verry tiny yard and there is a nice community pool so I have never thought about it personally. Recently, visiting a friend who has a home near Cocoa Beach on a canal close to the ocean put in a partially above ground pool, very nice, added concrete decking around it with nice landscaping. I asked why not an in-ground pool and he said that would have been $70,000+ and I thought he was exaggerating, but now I see he was not. They actually dug down, so a third of the pool is underground and two-thirds above ground. Their pool, concrete decking, landscaping, pumps, extras was all done for about $23,000 and looks great, so you don't have to spend a small fortune to get something you are happy with and enjoy.
This is good to know as I search for my next home in 2026. A pool isn't a deal breaker for me but if I see a home that already has a freeform pool at a good price, I now understand the value of having that.

Thank you for a great video with so much information. I had no idea all that went into building a pool. My neighbors here in Los Angeles did a prefabricated one, so a big hole was dug, and a crane came into our cul de sac and popped it in. It was quite a production. Your pool looks fabulous and I'm sure you'll get many years of enjoyment out of it. Worth every penny.

Wow! I can see why you had some reservations making this video. You can't take that money with you when you pass away, so enjoy the fruits of your hard work and labor while you can. That is an amazing home and pool you have there in one of the most desirable areas to live in Orlando. I am so proud of you both for all the hard work and deciding to do something for yourselves that you are enjoying most of the year. I consider that a great view by the way. Well done Amy and Eric, loved the total breakdown at the end, as well as the transparancy of the unexpected costs. So glad you got the pool of your dreams. Looking forward to meeting you in a few months. Happy Holidays!💌

This was the conclusion my wife and I came up with when deciding on a pool. Enjoy life while you can, and you can’t take any of the money with you when you leave. It’s an enormous amount of money we are spending, but this is something we’ve been deliberating for years about. Now we are about 6 months away from having a lovely 18x38 concrete pool in our backyard to create lots of family memories. Kudos to you all on designing such a fabulous pool!

Im planning on having a fancy pool built in my garden, I live in Germany and finding someone to build it for me might be difficult as most companies build rectangular pools not free form. I might also go for a large greenhouse over the top to trap the heat as the pool can still be cold in the summer.

We are just getting started on our design. We live in Delaware and need a custom shaped pool to fit within our property lines. We have an initial quote of 70K for the shape but i know we are going to add a few things like a waterfall, love seats, spa or hot-tub, lighting, patterned concrete, maybe a slide and a sloped rocky waterway into the waterfall. Yikes, Sounds expensive. To fit it all in we need to excavate and add a retaining wall around the back of the house. Oh boy, i think i am out of control now.

St. John’s county….16x32, four foot shallow end and six foot deep end with a couple sun shelf extensions to total around 600 sq ft with one bubbler, waterfall walls, planters, electric heater/chiller, full cage, led lights, 650 ft of travertine decking, and some ground work to make it level with the patio so you walk out the back and all on the same level…147k. Includes app to control and it’s a saltwater system.

Gorgeous pool, and yes Everything costs soooo much more in California. Just equipment itself is costing us 22k and its only a 14000 gallon pool with water features and spa . This pool in California right now is about 250k with all the landscaping. So much more expenses we didn't anticipate. So this video is awesome for people looking to build. Its sooo exciting the whole process though. I love it so far. But its pretty pricey for the excitement

Really great video. Helpful. I have several questions.
    1. How much do you feel this will increase the value of your house? Will you be able to recoup that amount upon selling the house? Hard question to answer but you are a realtor and there must be some guidelines in this area.
    2. Did you pay cash for the pool or is it financed? If financed, you need to also add in the total cost of the interest paid to the bank as a cost of the pool.
    3. Is there a guideline for how much should be spent on a pool as a percentage of the value of the house before the pool is installed?
    4. $175,000 is a lot of money. Are there other things to bring joy and happiness, togetherness and promote love between family and friends that would be less expensive but provide the same amount effectiveness as the pool?
    5. Is there any wisdom in selling your house and buying a house that already has a pool?

Hi Rob! Thanks for the questions!
      1. An appraiser will usually give you 50% value or less for the value of the pool So dollar for dollar, that's probably what we increased the price of the house by... about half of what we paid. BUT, the hidden benefit can be that homes this size are expected to have a pool for resale. So while it added 50% in value... it also probably made us a bit more money if we re-sell it because there would be a "penalty" for NOT having a pool. I hope that makes sense.

      2. We paid cash. Most new construction builders do not let you finance the cost of the pool into the home because of the issue in question #1... The home might not appraise for the financed value... so the buyer may not qualify. The other reason we don't recommend building with a builder is that you are already paying a mark-up from the pool contractor... then the builder adds their own mark-up on top of that so you can get a lot more pool by doing it after the fact. Most pool companies offer financing.

      3. I'm not sure there is a guideline as a percentage because most pools are going to cost around $100,000+ whether you put them behind a $300,000 home or a $1 million home. BUT if it is helpful to think of it that way, I would recommend not spending more than 20% of the value of the home on the pool. So... for a $300,000 home, maybe do something simpler for around $60,000... for a $1 million home you'd be at $200,000.

      4. Well right there you've asked the key question at the heart of our worry. :). I guess for us, the ideas of joy/happiness/togetherness are priceless, honestly so it is hard to put a dollar value on them. BUT... I think the real answer is OF COURSE! You don't need money for those things at all. One of the things that has surprised us is how much we enjoy the pool area with family but also how much we love being there alone at night... it is so peaceful. Eric just floats out there some times and it is so good for his heart.

      5. Definitely, Mr. Great Questions! What you lose is the ability to design it yourself... but you gain EVERYTHING else and for half the price! An older home can sometimes come with some repair and maintenance costs that can be not great... but overall buying a home with an existing pool is the best of all most everything. Thanks so much for your comment and questions!

Texas. We were fortunate to put our pool in just before Covid….before prices went crazy. It is very similar to this one (size, pavers, ozone, tanning ledge) less a hot tub and screening. We paid $52k.

You got an Amazon deal. I was quoted $68,000 for a 15x30 rectangle with nothing fancy. Five feet deep the whole thing. I am in Dfw.

Hi, great video! I love your decking. Quick question: what material are your pavers made of? The tile vendor mentioned that "paver" is somewhat of a generic term and could refer to limestone, travertine, concrete, etc

Thank you for the video. We've watched it many times, sat down with Jake for a second time yesterday, and his design for us very close to yours, but flipped. You're coming up on two years. Besides maybe going larger on the tanning shelf, is there anything you'd do different? Still happy with the pavers? We were going to do textured concrete vice pavers because of the maintenance. Then last night we were sold on pavers.. today we're back to textured concrete. LoL ugh. -Brad
