The High Price of Defending Europe Against Russia

  • European NATO members are racing to bulk up their militaries in the face of Russian aggression and the possibility that Donald Trump, if elected in November, may try to pull the US away. But experts say NATO nations and their allies need to at least double their defense spending to deter any potential Kremlin threat.
In the Baltics, the number of allied troops is rising. It’s there that NATO is planning to station new brigades, with soldiers from Canada in Latvia, UK troops in Estonia and German forces in Lithuania. But all of these efforts, including continuing aid to Ukraine, will require a lot more funding. Alarms are ringing all across the continent about how much more NATO members will need to spend to give Russia pause, especially if Trump takes over in the White House. In 2014, when Russia invaded Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula and Donbas region, NATO members promised to spend 2% of GDP on defense. A decade later, only about half of them met that target. Though Vladimir Putin has said he has no intention of challenging NATO, experts are estimating that member states need to double their military spending to 3-4% of GDP, close to Cold War levels of spending, just in case.

Had Russia became a full fledged democracy after the fall of the Soviet Union, while also not going fully overboard with the Bourgeoise/Oligarchy aspects of western life (a problem many of us citizens are trying to fix, thanks neoliberalism), in addition to not invading your neighbours, this wouldn't be much of a problem.
You will probably argue that Ukraine should not have attempted to join NATO for this to happen, or that Ukraine needs to be a buffer zone, or else "Russia may feel threatened" and justify war.
The thing is, diplomacy does not work like that. You cannot make a country do anything by threatening it with war. It goes against treaties the world has signed, and I'd assume even domestic Russian law states that you cannot sign a valid contract if you are being coerced into it by a threat. If anything, it further validates Ukraine's proposition to join NATO's defence pact (and I say that because Russians see NATO as some sort of offensive pact, which it really is not).

@@RMProjects785 small countries cannot function by themselves. they need allies. they are stuck between working with Russia or the west. the west has convinced them that they are the better choice. America has the money and resources to influence other nations to their side more than Russia.
They get foreign investments from America and the EU and in return they must be hostile towards Russia. Hostility towards Russia thwarts Russian influence over Europe and strengthens American influence. Part of the agreement of being a member of NATO is that you buy NATO standard equipment, enriching American defence contractors.
Russia was unable to sway many members to their side due to 2 reasons. Hard feelings from the past of the Soviet Union. It's undeniable that the Soviet Union was mismanaged resulting in suffering of Soviet citizens, many of which were in the countries bordering Russia today. (it is important to mention that Russians also suffered and there wasn't direct targeting of specific nations or people.) The second reason is that Russia lost 50% of it's GDP and had to work through corruption and severe economic crisis after the fall of the soviet union. Allying with them at the time would not bring the same economic prosperity as allying with the west.
Now times are changing. Russia is back on the global stage and regained it's economic prowess and is projected to outgrow many of its western counterparts in the future. NATO's pressure on Russia is increasing. For every soldier NATO puts on the Russian border, Russia must respond with a matching force. This forces Russia to spend more on its military and slows down economic growth. This is all an attempt to stop Russia from becoming a dominating power in Europe and European countries seeking a new alliance with Russia.
In the next 50 years, we may see many of the Russian neighbours switching sides once the governments manufactured hatred towards Russia dies down and a new era will begin.

@@VKiller How is buying cheap fuel from Russia, a will to cooperate? NATO has literally arrived at Russian borders. Attacks might not be justified but so is the expansionism of NATO. I believe Russians were never really considered part of the west family (i.e the G7), because of long history of cold war with USA. Europe would never sanction their partner countries for invading, for example USA, they invaded multiple times to protect their national interest, and no one has question it, but Russia was treated differently. Its dumb to think that Russia would go all in invasion on Europe. Neither Russia has money and resources to fund it, nor it will lead to any gains to him. If done, it would result to a never-ending war like what happened in Afghanistan. It's not 1800/1900. Even if they invade successful, the population won't be welcoming them, it would ultimately be like east and west Germany. So, it's absurd to consider that Russia would invade any other European country. Putin said and asked Ukraine for years to not join NATO or he would be compelled to attack. I get it, Ukraine is a sovereign country with its own agenda but so is Russia. USA would not like another Cuban Missile Crisis, right? Similarly, European countries would not like Russia forming military alliance with the nearby African countries like Morocco, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria and later makes its nukes at stand by in these country. Of course, it's against the national interest of all of the EU countries. Now on, observe the situation as a third party. You might get different POV. I might be wrong, but this is what I have observed and understood. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Western Europe has always been toast. Dozens of languages and cultural barriers, few natural resources, a very shaky centralized government system, and half of the countries have a military that isn't capable of defending itself. This level of vulnerability can't be found anywhere else in the world. All the powers have always looked outward and gradually shrunk to nothing.

With Ukraine not joining NATO, this price never needed to be paid.

Defending Europe on defense budget 2% of GDP, is akin to buy security on the cheap.
The 2% defense spending should be based on your need to assure security and deter threat , not just a number took from the air.'.

The question really is that is an American or British or German, etc. willing to die defending an obscure town in Eastern Europe? For your country gives some motivation but for a different country not so much.

No as an American, we're not. Russia can have the Baltics. They belong with Russia anyways. We don't need anymore wars and money for Blackrock and defense contractors. 20 years of wars, and you demand we fight another 20 years, all for what? So blackrock can rob us blind and start ww3?

its a principle. If nato won't defend a member, then there is 0 reason for the organisation to exist. Which is why even if the smallest country gets invaded, there must be an immediate response from every member to defend it

Perhaps lessen manufacturing in china and move it to such countries with lower growth and gdp in the EU. By way of bosting production, lagging gdp EU members can help contribe to Russian deterance.
