How To Grow Mushrooms & Make Mushroom Compost at Home for FREE!

  • This super simple tutorial is for the mushroom lover, as well as the
    gardener. Organic mushroom compost is an expensive resource, but a very
    beneficial one. Fungal innoculated compost is great for the garden
    because it brings in benegicial bacteria as well as helps colonize the
    roots of plants to help uptake nutrients and fight bad soil born
    funguses. Make some today! And as a bonus, you can even get mushrooms
    to eat!

  • @DaZebraffe
    @DaZebraffe 6 ปีที่แล้ว +25

    This is a good video, but there's one tip I'd like to add that you didn't mention. If you transfer the slurry into a much larger container and dilute it with as much as 20x extra water, you can actually spread out the spores, with there still being plenty enough per volume of water to get a good base, and thus inoculate a much larger area. Or, at the least, you could have gotten your mix spread more evenly across that mound you did inoculate. :P

    Portobello mushroom spawn + oyster mushroom spawn = competition.
    Probably won't get much fruiting, if any, and composting won't be as good as could be - myceliums will be busy competing each other more then fruiting or decomposing. Other than that - great idea and good details. It should work fine with one variety

      That's only if you are using grow bags which have very limited space for the myclium to grow & feed.
      Saprophytic mushrooms ( decomposers ) actually do really well in polycultures, the myclium will co-operate with each other. I grow Oysters & Honey Mushrooms together on tree stumps. Nature is co-operative just as much as it is competitive. I get higher yields with polycultures than monocultures.

    I have tried and have inoculated some of my giant garden planters with mushrooms. I think the heat down here in Florida might limit the spread of the positive biome it might create in a cooler climate. So now along with occasional fresh mushrooms I add shredded paper into my compost and then my soil. My soil here is dominated by sand unless I constantly add organic material.

    Hi. Thanks for the video, I really enjoyed it. I'm growing some mushrooms at home in a container. I can't tell the difference between mycellium and mold. For me, they look like molds, but I'm not sure. if there a way to differentiate molds and mycellious?

    • @carolday3381
      @carolday3381 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Mold is liquid, slimy usually green yellow, grey blue etc. mycelium is fluffy white stuff and the pinning is different than the fluffy grey mold hairs. Pinning looks like little fingers reaching out which makes sense since pinning is the fruiting stages. Otherwise growing not fruiting mycelium is like hairs going through the substrate. Go look up more videos of professional mushroom growers and they give great close ups showing the difference between molds bacteria and mycelium.

    • @MIgardener
      @MIgardener  9 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      ***** after doing some research you are correct about Portabella, however the oysters should take off though, I have had several compost piles successfully grow oysters. 1 pile was pure horse poo, 1 pile was all leaf and grass compost (basically what this one was), and the other was a pile of rotting straw. The rotting straw had the best blooms if I must be honest, but this is ideally for the fungally dominated compost.

      Can I use button mushrooms? Mushrooms need to be fresh or 3 to 5 days old in fridge also fine?

      Yeah, button mushrooms are actually a great species to try this with. Even when you get them from the stores, they are chock full of black spores and readily multiply in compost (in fact this is how they are industrially grown). Old mushrooms are perfectly fine for this as well, just wash the container out. *Just do not eat the results if you use button mushrooms for composting because they have quite a few toxic and deadly look-alikes that are very common and easy to mis-identify*
      Also keep in mind this is NOT a sure-fire process. I don't know if industrial growers do anything to their mushrooms before they reach the store but I guarantee that big business tries to protect their interests. They likely sell mushrooms in a state where you can't use them for your own garden. They may sell them too young, or sell them after they drop their spores so that you can't easily reproduce them yourself. There may even be a way to inoculate the spores - I really don't know, but I do know that it is common practice for these industries to sell produce that does not grow for you. Otherwise, they'd be out of a job -_- Gotta love capitalism.
      Regardless... its... a mushroom :D It will always have quite a few spores left in the gills, even after it has propagated (unless it has been sterilized somehow). So this method will work fine - it's just with button mushrooms, they tend to be sold before they are fully mature. So, you'll have to prepare them and let them mature for a couple of days before you use them. Look for ones that have the gills exposed. If you can clearly see the black gills already on the mushroom, it likely has produced spores (or will if you let it sit for 24hr) and this method will work.

    Great video Luke. How much Molasses did you use? This is my first year with a compost pile; I never thought I had enough material for a pile. Boy was I wrong. Been using grass clippings from the front yard, wood chips, young weeds with no seeds, kitchen scraps etc. Pile is already 6 foot by 3 foot. I do have a white fungus growing in the pile with plenty of worms and huge grubs that look like the ones from another of your videos. Unfortunately mine is in full sun, no shade out by the garden. Do you think I could grow mushrooms on the north side of the pile? Keep up the good work.

    At 06:30 / I spend carpophores in chlorinated water and I put with boiled and rinsed paper. Old tea or coffee grounds are suitable if it is boiled to kill bacteria. But the fact of Pleurotus ostreatus married AGARICUS bispora is a great audacity! It is awesome!

    Hmmm interesting but I don't think portobellos will grow this way. You may have been better off eating it. I feel like the compost would be a poor catalyst for the spores. The oysters however, you may have luck with those. And if you do I hope you share the results.

    • @MIgardener
      @MIgardener  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      unchano I agree 100% the portobello as even ***** was pointing out is not the right growing medium. However I have had 3 piles do very very well with the oyster slurry. They grow like crazy!
