I’m roughly 30 seconds into the video. I’d rather have a snap on ratchet than an icon, but when it comes to putting together a cheep set of tools for the road, I’ll get the harbor freight shit
I'll stick with my gearwrench and Pittsburgh.... The green swivel head Pittsburgh pro is my most used ratchet.... Besides my right angle Milwaukee impact
The truth of the matter is in 2025 mid-grade tool quality is more than enough for 99% mechanics out there. Icon, Gearwrench and even Tekton is enough for most people if you use the tools correctly. What a lot of people really fail to understand is that older mechanics love Snap On and Matco because that was truly the best when we were coming up. Once you got outside the typical craftsmen tools you had to step it up to snap on for higher end quality tools. There are certain things that I think Snap On just makes the best and other things that I don't care about. For example most of my sockets are Gearwrench and I've never broke a single one in 20 years with proper use but I don't like GW ratchets. I think Snap On has the best ratchets. The most important thing for mechanics is to make sure you have the tool to do the job. The brand stamped in the metal doesn't make a difference as long as you get a paycheck for being able to do the job.
Bad part is as soon as ICON gets their customer base and builds the name, the price difference will be near snap on prices and at that point might as well buy snap on especially if you have a truck showing up at the shop once a week. Love the video though guys great comparison and very cool set ups
why do people act like a truck showing up is so good? it'll take 2 weeks for you to warranty a tool instead of 10 minutes on your way home that night or 10 minutes during the day when you get a break
@ can only speak from my experience but after working 7am-5pm and then side work from 5 to 8-9pm the last thing I wanna do is have to find time to go to tool store. For less used tools a cheaper route I’m all for

However, to your point, your Snap On dealer can really make or break the argument for "is snap on worth it". #1 Most of the time it doesn't take Snap On 2 weeks to warranty a tool. Typically you walk on the truck and they fix it or trade it out and you leave. You can call your dealer at anytime and generally meet him anywhere and exchange it. Not everyone is 10 mins away from a HF. HF doesn't sell or make a ton of the specialty tools that SO makes. I have had several jobs where I needed a tool that nobody has. Call the Snappy man and he can pull through with the specialty tool or sometimes even modify the tool that you need. Now that isn't justifying the price of a lot of snap on tools but to your specific question, sometimes its just not possible.
you can tell a good mechanic by their ability to drop a diesel engine into anything. to them, nothing is impossible. everyone else just changes spare parts
Awesome video. Icon is a great set to start with. The quality has definitely stepped up and they get the job done. The box will hold up till you decide to change colors. Great comparison video and you now have your own set of tools to get the jobs done. Great video. Look forward to seeing how you like them after using them for a while.
I have the icon wobble extensions and the “locking” technology fails doesn’t work always pops out and swivels when I don’t want them to. I’ll will say icon is good for starting out but personally I’ve started switching out of harbor freight brand tools even more into snap on
The tolerances shown on the head of that bolt was a little telling… that’s how costs are shaved on manufacturing since it’s not made to the tighter tolerances of snap on (or any other like MAC, Marco, etc)
I wish I had the options available today when I started. So any more affordable options to get started with now then 20+ years ago. I still have my first craftsman box I started with so it lasted and worked. Just needed more room. Have a 68 in Epiq that i'm waiting for my locker and hutch to come because I'm out of room again. The grind of more getting more tools never stops.
Icon ratchets are ok, but overall there are much better Taiwanese made options on the market, but they have a new line dropping next year and they will be some really nice ratchets! You guys should really check our Koken, KTC, Nepros, Vessel, Stahwille, Tsunoda, Keiba, Tone, and other Japanese and German made tools out!! Rrally high quality and are essentially American made quaity equivalent for Taiwanese made prices.
Am I the only one who is happy to get his old screwdriver handle back? Or my same ratchet body forever? I like old fashioned everything. So that probably explains it. 😂
It’s a fair argument regarding the price difference, but not preferable in terms of strength and quality. Take two combination, wrenches and try to bend them in a vice. Compare the chrome plating by taking the same two wrenches and hitting them against each other. We have to compare them apples to apples. My .02
I have been buying Snap on for almost 40 years for my job. I have some Snap on at home and some Icon The Snap on stuff is a lot better in my opinion, but not worth the price any more. If I was just starting today, no way would I have all the snap on stuff I have
Love the snap on box, especially the color but even if I had an absurd amount of money to spend, I would never buy one (New for sure, used would depend but probably not.) The snap on arguments have not convinced me to justify... Is snap on better than Icon? It f×××ing better be!
3:00.. the SnapOn isn't chamfered..the ICON is. Better technology that's why it "feels" looser...EVERYBODY chamfer their sockets nowadays....it's like taking a SnapOn Flank Drive wrench and comparing it's tight fit with a non Flank Drive wrench and saying Flank Drive is inferior because IT IS looser ..but actually works better ☝️
🤦 people are so D√πB . Who cares about resale value. If you're buying tools, most of the time you're buying them for a lifetime. Resale value for Snap-on is like 60-70%. So you buy a ratchet for let's say $200, resale value is $140, you lost $60. At that point my $30 ratchet, I made the same money, did the same job and really at that point my $30 ratchet I can give away and still make out. Some guys way of thinking is 🤔 Resale value, how D√πB 😂😂
