    (From Wikipedia)
    Victoria Falls Bridge initiates tourism
    European settlement of the Victoria Falls area started around 1900 in response to the desire of Cecil Rhodes' British South Africa Company for mineral rights and imperial rule north of the Zambezi, and the exploitation of other natural resources such as timber forests north-east of the falls, and ivory and animal skins. Before 1905, the river was crossed above the falls at the Old Drift, by dugout canoe or a barge towed across with a steel cable.[12] Rhodes' vision of a Cape-Cairo railway drove plans for the first bridge across the Zambezi and he insisted it be built where the spray from the falls would fall on passing trains, so the site at the Second Gorge was chosen. See the main article Victoria Falls Bridge for details.[11] From 1905 the railway offered accessible travel from as far as the Cape in the south and from 1909, as far as the Belgian Congo in the north. In 1904 the Victoria Falls Hotel was opened to accommodate visitors arriving on the new railway. The falls became an increasingly popular attraction during British colonial rule of Northern Rhodesia (Zambia) and Southern Rhodesia (Zimbabwe), with the town of Victoria Falls becoming the main tourist centre.
    Zambia's independence and Rhodesia's UDI
    In 1964, Northern Rhodesia became the independent state of Zambia. The following year, Rhodesia unilaterally declared independence. This was not recognized by Zambia, the United Kingdom nor the vast majority of states and led to United Nations-mandated sanctions. In response to the emerging crisis, in 1966 Zambia restricted or stopped border crossings; it did not re-open the border completely until 1980. Guerilla warfare arose on the southern side of the Zambezi from 1972: the Rhodesian Bush War. Visitor numbers began to drop, particularly on the Rhodesian side. The war affected Zambia through military incursions, causing the latter to impose security measures including the stationing of soldiers to restrict access to the gorges and some parts of the falls.
    Zimbabwe's internationally recognised independence in 1980 brought comparative peace, and the 1980s witnessed renewed levels of tourism and the development of the region as a centre for adventure sports. Activities that gained popularity in the area include whitewater rafting in the gorges, bungee jumping from the bridge, game fishing, horse riding, kayaking, and flights over the falls.[15]
    Tourism in recent years
    The naturally formed "Devil's Pool", where some tourists swim despite a risk of plunging over the edge
    By the end of the 1990s almost 400,000 people were visiting the falls annually, and this was expected to rise to over a million in the next decade. Unlike the game parks, Victoria Falls has more Zimbabwean and Zambian visitors than international tourists; the attraction is accessible by bus and train, and is therefore comparatively inexpensive to reach.
    Both countries permit tourists to make day trips across the border to view the falls from both viewpoints. Visitors with single-entry visas are required to purchase a visa each time they cross the border; visas can be obtained at both border posts. Costs vary from US$50-$80 (as of January 2017). Visa regulations change frequently; visitors are advised to check the rules currently in effect in both countries before crossing the border in either direction. Additionally, foreign tourists may purchase a KAZA visa for US$50 that will permit visitors to travel between Zambia and Zimbabwe for up to 30 days as long as they remain within the covered countries.

      Your cat is trying to get through to you to stop petting him in the wrong direction. Only pet them in the direction of their fur.
      Learn something new every day. Cats especially like scratches on the sides of the face, when done well. And in front of the tail.
      Advanced class: Knead their pelt gently, moving slowly head to tail, they'll often plop over on their side purring.

    THANK YOU! I was born in Zimbabwe and forced to leave as a very young child. The last time I saw the Mist That Thunders in person was when I was eleven years old. You have given me a gift beyond measure today since I am not able to return to the country of my birth.

    Oh man this makes me SO HAPPY that one of your crew made this trip! I grew up in Zimbabwe and for my 14th birthday my dad took me up there. Mosi oa tunya translates to "the mist that thunders" and seeing this made me seriously tear up and brought back fond memories of that journey! It's a sound that you will never forget.

      I felt like the quality on this one suffered a little. The bass was causing clipping.
      If it were possible, it would probably be best to get microphones/recording with no auto-gain to ensure volume stays fairly consistent.

    • @wobblysauce
      @wobblysauce 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      But it is that bassy with the rushing water.

    • @mckseal
      @mckseal 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Sorry, I didn't word that too well. When the bass gets loud very suddenly the rest of the sound gets turned down (the mic hits it DR limit) so it sounds like somebody is wiggling a volume slider. That messes with the binaural effect. You mainly hear it in the treble suddenly fading out, it "feels" like somebody clamping their hands over your ears suddenly.

      Yes, I know what you are saying and agree with you also, but IRL it is that deep.

    I love falls. In my youth, I used to sit for hours on a ledge listening to my grandfather's falls, about 70 feet. You could watch the hawks soar at eye level over his falls. The frequencies if water falling is so soothing. Thank you for the memories.
    Cheers!

    • @OldSkoolFauji
      @OldSkoolFauji 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Luminous knight - the sound would be massive I believe. I think it's about the drop height as well. Higher the water drop, heavier or more low pitched the sound. The closest I have experienced such a powerful fall is the Chitrakoot Falls in India, called the Indian Niagra (Nowhere close to that though), was pretty cool.

    to stand next to the falls, in full flood, or at the bottom of the falls (zambian side) is an experience difficult to comprehend... the volume of water, spray and roar.... watching this video brings back a lot of child hood memories. i lived in livingstone (zambia) in the lat 60's and this was our playground. One thing that struck me was, even all these years later, there are still no barriers and in some places you are literally a couple of metres / 6 feet away fro a sheer drop... and i cannot recall a single incident where a tourist or anyone has slipped a fallen to what would be their death....

    Just tried your binaural experience through my surround sound, Destin. Man what an experience. Take note that my system has been expertly tuned with a Db sensor and tonal ears. This is an amazing immersion f sound and picture. The falls were shaking my apartment through the 3 sub's. Can't wait to try more videos! Thanks

    • @BlueZirnitra
      @BlueZirnitra 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Although I'm sure it still sounded cool, binaural signals don't work properly through speakers, no matter how well they are set up. They are designed to work through headphones because they simulate the human head being in between the two channels, which translates to a dead spot in the center of the mix where the head is. The ears are hearing two totally different things, and on a surround system both will just be playing on top of each other, nullifying the effect.
      Stereo mixes don't have a barrier between the two channels, they're just slightly different shades of the same audio blended together.

    What kind of recording equipment do you use for the sound traveller project, Destin? I live in Edmonton and after I started listening to The Sound Traveller I've thought the sound of Whyte Ave on a Friday night (drunk people laughing and partying with loud cars revving in the streets) could make an amazing video like this. I also think going to a car meet with a binaural recording set up would be really cool. If this interests you I'd love to provide for such a cool project and if not I'd still like to know for my own purposes. Thank you and keep up the great stuff!!! :D

    Is there way to know what volume to set your computer at to hear what ambient levels would actually be like? Much of this experience is the sound, I know headphones can't really replicate say a rocket launch but something like this would be closer to manageable.

    Very cool! Why is this not the default mode for recording sound in videos? It is certainly more engaging!
