Modern American schools (and some other countries too) are fascinating to me because I grew up overseas in diverse private schools in the 80's and we simply didn't misbehave in the classroom. We could be silly, talkative and distracted, but NEVER would we ever speak to adults the way I see my students speak to me and others today. We had manners, self-respect and very clear guidelines for our behavior. But we also had parents who worked on our social-emotional skills at home. We came from different ethnicities and socio-economic backgrounds and our teachers were very strict. Sometimes they were too strict, but at least I learned how to treat people with empathy and respect. I am now teaching very small groups ( I love teaching), and do not plan to work with large classrooms again. Bless you teachers who persevere. You are so underrated.
limespider8 I totally agree with you Sir , before yes some students are naughty lazy talkative but they dont cross the red line...respect was still there
Hi Linda! Just signed up for your 3 day course and am really looking forward to Day 2 already! I´ve also used parts of WBT in my ESL classes and have had great success with it. It´s obvious you are a GREAT teacher!!
The only problem I have is with violent kids. That's the only thing i haven't figured out. Especially if he has something sharp. I lay out the consequences. a. More written work. b. Contacting their parents c. extra cleaning up duty d. shortened recess. (Never completely remove their break. They need it.) c. a written behavior contract.
Not letting kids into room won't work i my case, first of all, kids will be glad to take an opportunity and skip the class at all, also, it's prohibited in our school to keep kids away from the classroom. What shake-up or "punishment"(though i don't like this word) would you advise for a situation when kids simply don't do anything? They don't write they don't open their books, they just don't. Sending to a proncipal is a NO, calling a parent doesn't always work, leaving them after classes is almost impossible because they won't stay and i will not be able to catch them (they have classes in different rooms and me too), extra homework - they don't do even the necessary one. Any ideas?
now I am struggling like you are. my class is not quiet and I am barely able to teach. two monthes have gone and I am still struggling but not surrendering . I tried so many ways to change things , sonetimes it works and sometimes no. I tried candy but the defference is not so big. I want to try the call back method and using hands method. I also want to try giving disruptive students red cards and yellow cards and green cards for good students. I also want to try preventing them from going to bathroom or participation by writing on the board as a punishment . they defenitely value going to the bathroom and showing up on the board. I tried to reward them by showing them a video in class if they keep quiet . But it did not also work! though they stopped talking during watching the video. I think I might use it another time, it may be effective if appropriately used
Watch the movie Freedom Writers. If you want an academic book that teaches similar concepts to the movie, read Girl Time by Maisha Winn. The bottom line: kids need to know that you care about their life and where they come from before they care about anything we have to say as teachers! You've got this! Never give up! It won't be easy, and as Rita Pierson says "your toughest kids are never absent!" Learning to teach is a lifelong pursuit that we never do perfectly-- we just keep getting better at it. There is also a miracle trick: when things are out of hand try saying: "I have 50%..." Pause for a second "I have 65%"--pause again. "I have 80%" --pause. "I have everyone! Thanks so much, everyone!" It sort of gamifies getting everyone's attention.
+nowiamthere If all else fails , try a send home shake up like an F on a report card . I am sure that their parents would give them a " classroom shake up at home " that night before the next school day so that the teacher doing the classroom shake up is no longer required . The power of the grade book , take control of your classroom and use it . Otherwise if you are not getting any parental support or admin support at all then do a total classroom shakeup as in you stepping down as the teacher and moving to teach at another school where the parents and the admins are supportive to you and not fish heads .
I also give warnings with names, and then when it doesnt work after two warnings, they get an additional homework which wont be graded, unless they don't do it, then they receive F which cannot be changed. Also, do you think you could have certificates that we have finished the course?I mean I do it for self development, but headteachers at school enjoy seeing certificates that teachers develop.
This is my first year teaching in English and in new culture, it is very hard to find deals with my students so time I just want to run to the office and ask them to bring a new teacher 😓
SERIOUSLY, this is so true to me... I feel so helpless, doesn"t know how to begin the lessons or how am i going to prepare... i am so unprepared for this and has no plans how to proceed next lesson for them...
What my problem is: If you say "class, class class" and afterwards like 5 kids are going on talking in 4 different corners, how can you be fair and keep track of them all and giving them a warning? It's just impossible. Most oft the time you focus on the students that you know, they won't behave well. Or those, who speak the loudest. Or you see the ones that are closer to you first. So quite often you always pick the same students and the same students will get away with their behavior.
I hear your concern. I usually just start giving warnings to whoever I see, and they figure it out pretty quickly. Ideally you wouldn't always pick the same people; if you notice it often happening at the same time, you can purposefully look start in different corners of the room. But, honestly, if you're really consistent for a few days at giving warnings right away for whoever goes back to talking, I think within a few days they will see you are taking it seriously and you shouldn't have this problem nearly as much. Hope that helps!
@@teach4theheart Thank you. Yes, I guess consistency is the key. And the first times are never really fair but have to be done even if you picked the "wrong" student which actually is also not true because anyone should be quiet, even the ones that are usually quiet ;-)
@@disdonc6012 Exactly! And, remember, the beauty of the warning system is that you're not giving any consequences, so you really don't even need to worry about being "fair" because nothing is happening to the students who get a warning. They're not in trouble at all - just being reminded of what they need to do.
@@disdonc6012 Have you watched the whole mincourse? We explain it all there: teach4theheart.com/minicourse But, the short answer is that the first warning has no consequences; if they get repeated warnings then there are consequences.
1 kid messes up my whole class. he is talking back, not doing work and making loud jokes whenever i am teaching. he walks on top of desks. busy beating other kids in class . refuses to obey discipline measures. he even threw away his school work books. once he starts dancing in class. there is just no way to get through . i tried hugs, giving him special roles nothing works . i dread that class
The first video was very helpful, but I didnt realize this was a sales pitch for a mini-course, and that you don't get to go to "Day 2" - which of course you can't miss... without taking a survey, signing up for a course, etc. Pretty disappointed.
You have a couple choices. You could find another way to give warnings. Or you could simply not allow this behavior. I know that sounds easier said than done, but you could make it a policy that if they remove the sticky note from their desk, it jumps right to the consequence.
Thank you! I appreciate it! You did a fantastic job on this video. It gave me a lot to think about. Your site was an answer to prayer. I am taking a classroom management course at FHSU to finish up my teaching degree. Our assignment was to find a good classroom management video to share with the class. God lead me to your site. I would like to take the Classroom Management 101 online course, I was wondering where the link is. Also, will I be able to to take advantage of the pay what you can afford option? We are tight financially right now because I have gone back to school. I was a stay at home mom until my youngest was in 2nd grade. I subbed for a few years and realized that I wanted to teach. This is a two year program, so I won't be teaching until 2018! Even though it is so far away, I don't want to forget about your resource because I know that will be very beneficial for me later. Thank you for what you are doing!
Windy Fry the pay-what-you-can-afford offer is only available a few times a year. But I also offer special pricing for students of the mini-course. If you sign up at www.teach4theheart.com/minicourse you will get the special offer too. And for more info or to enroll in Classroom Management 101 go here: academy.teach4theheart.com. So glad the video was helpful and that God led you here!
I am attempting to click on your link graphics that say "finish the mini course" with no success. I've tried with both Chrome and Internet Explorer. Any advice? Thanks!
I'm so sorry you're having trouble. Send us an email to linda [at] teach4theheart [dot] com letting us know you're having trouble signing up for the rest of the minicourse and we'll be happy to get you set up

If someone can give tips and it works, we don't have the issue of teacher shortage in the U.S.

Sorry but your classroom shake up does not work in the Gulf! I close the door, the students will just go out, drive their cars and go home!
You've got to tailor it to your situation. Get creative and see if you can come up with something that would get your students' attention.
what am I doing here, I'm from Russia😂
