- How are all you beautiful people today? I hope you’ve had an awesome week and I hope 2021 is better for you than last year. Today I melt down a heap of bullets from a subscriber which I thought were all lead but apparently not ,I’m thinking there was a heap of brass and copper bullets in there as well as I needed to heat it to twice the melting point of lead For it to melt. I also did a couple of other small pieces to pretty it up a bit as that’s one hell of an ugly bar . Have a great week my friends and I will see you all next Friday.

HOW TO MIRROR FINISH A BAR
I start with an 80 grit flap disc on my angle grinder then I use my drill with 50 mm round sanding discs . I start with 150 grit then go through the following Grits 240-400-800 Then once I get to the following Grits I use a small squirt of WD-40 1200-1500-2000-2500-3000. The WD40 helps to lubricate the discs and stops the sanding disk binding up with the metal powder . Then after that I use my buffer wheel on my bench grinder to get a perfect mirrored finish on it??????.

I keep all my steel and cast iron pieces and I give them to my friend and once he gets about a tonne from me and his own collecting he takes that to the scrapyard and sells it then he buys some beer and comes over to my house and we make a night of it.

Hello again all my friends👋🏻 back again for another weekly melt with the #1 scrap melting Muppet himself BigStackD. Now as I live in Australia I’ve had nothing ever to do with guns or ammunition so I stupidly thought all bullets were made of lead and had no reason to think otherwise🤦🏻♂️. Next time I do something like this I’ll be sure to do some more research . Most bullets have a thin Copper Jacket, filled with lead, so the green flame is from the copper and possibly the brass, from the empty shells?
Definitely copper jacketed, look like they're probably old 308 British to me especially given the location, that's why if I melt bullets I always stove top melt and then strain with a stainless sieve and a torch to get the lead out and leave the copper jacket behind, otherwise you'll overheat it end up with an ugly mess of saturated lead copper alloy with a load of excess lead and there's no way to really recover from that without using a bunch of chemistry and dissolving the metals
It was 100% copper jackets with lead cores. He created some weird crapy alloy of the lead and copper. I didn’t see any cases in that mix before the melt.
They use pewter as a mold fillout on molds because of its high tin content.

When I saw the drips coming out of the crack, honest to God, my first thought was "Holy crap; your crucible is bleeding!!"
Should maybe cast some decorative mini pillars to reinforce those shelves...... Something like little roman columns or similar to that

Those bullets had copper jackets (any of the pointy ones would be), which would explain the higher temps and why you had a solid "bar" but still had liquid lead flow out when you first tipped it over.
When handling those copper jacketed bullets, gotta melt the lead out and skim the copper off first before using the lead (and then more copper to melt!).
Also, two items of note:
1. You had a ton of slag from all that dirt. Most cast lead bullet reloaders rinse the dirt off first to avoid that and it seems to work really well. Also helps identify the copper pieces (as well as ID those in point #2).
2. Sometimes there are "total metal jacket" or 'copper plated' bullets that are fully-encased lead inside copper, which can be VERY dangerous when heated if they rupture and spray molten lead out. Once rinsed, the copper bullets can be checked for these and a pair of snips/side-cutters used to cut a hole in the copper jacket to allow the lead to melt out safely. Very glad you were fortunate enough not to encounter this!
Was thinking the same thing. Checked out a few rifle ammo of mine and the bullets aren't exactly all lead as one would assume. Then there is the pistol ammo with copper jackets etc...Like you said, there was a mix of shtuff in the first few melts. Really neat to watch. Always wonder how BigstackD keeps that concrete floor so clean.
Devil Forge is just too hot too quick for that. I use a turkey burner and a cast iron pot (with plenty of fresh air) for rough melting range scrap lead. Basically I think the end product was very high lead content brass because the temp moved right past lead's melting point and straight into melting copper (from jackets and plating). I wonder if some zinc got in there. It takes very little zinc to make lead act stupid in molds as it increases surface tension. That dross was probably the dirt, particles of copper, and all the alloying elements. Bullet casters flux (usually with candle wax) the living heck out of thier lead and stir the crap out of it just above the liquidus of lead to keep the alloying metals in the melt. Bullet lead, and wheel weight lead, is alloyed with other minor percentages of metals, notably tin and antimony. Improves castability and desired hardness (dead soft lead is not especially good for center fire velocities).

Most bullets are alloys with tin, antimony, bismuth, copper, zinc or even silver. It all depends on the brand, age and type of cartridges.

Every company had their own recipe. The trick is that the pure lead comes off at a lower temp
True. Pure lead is too soft for modern bullets so other ingredients are added to increase the hardness for the type of bullet you need. Pure lead is ok for antique style blackpowder muzzle loader's round balls tho!
Catching up on ones I missed and I am sure someone else has already covered this in an earlier comment, jacketed rifle rounds are usually around 5:1 or 6:1 according to the caliber lead to copper. judging by what i could make out of the ones you melted that would be close. that is around the ratio used to make hardened lead, it is an alloy that is more common than you think. Its primary use is in battery systems, and a few other electrical devices where regular lead would be to soft and wear out quickly, the small amount of copper lends a considerable amount of durability. If you would have reversed the ratio that is machine grade leaded copper, that is also used in some electrical environments where the copper needs to be worked as the lead softens the copper enough to make it pliable. Sorry for the lengthy rant, i wanted to give you a little bit of a start on your research, just in case no one else did. Love the videos, keep-em coming
I was about to go over very much the same thing. Also, many rounds are copper washed or jacketed. This didn't look jacketed, but a copper wash round oxidizes very similarly to straight hardened lead, which would've raised the copper content even higher, though just a bit.
That was a mess, but still cool to watch.
I know we all love the casting and all, but I feel like we're all kinda lowkey here to see how his dogs are.

Cut things mixed ingot into small squares then remelt at lower temp to flush out the lead. Thats basically the only way to seperate the metals now , and it may take multiple melts.
I always melt the lead out of the jackets and separate them, That has a high antimony content to make it hard for bulk mil spec ammo.
Think I just spent ten minutes trying to figure out what metal he was melting. Didn't even know antinomy was even a thing.
You’ve probably got some bullets there that a a lead-antimony alloy. This is a harder lead they use in some bullets and has a melting point of around 700c

@@adambloke3050 just did a search, more than likely it is an alloy which would explain the excessive dross on each melt. Extremely difficult and expensive to remove the antimony and there may even be a bit of arsenic in the mix.
I pointed this out as well. He has mentioned before that he collected from an old trading range. Probably surplus WWI .303 used in the Lee Metford rifling, pressed into service for the more modern Lee Enfield as good practice ammo. To get a good melt he’s going to need al lot more heat, I think 900*F is about right but I’m not casting/reloader, just a reloader.

pretty sure you had a brass alloy. The "slag" you were pulling out is most likely steel cores from the bullets. Some bullets have a steel core in an effort to penetrate better.
That and/or some of them were a different lead alloy. Some rounds use a lead with a higher melting point. But yea, steel core and copper jackets is the most likely scenario

Acts like new fishing weight's they now add wierd alloys to them.
there are a whole bunch of videos on ways to "smooth" out the lines from a PLA 3D Printer, might try some of those methods before dropping the money on a Resin Printer.
Easiest smoothing is to print in ABS and use acetone vapour, but resin printers are cheap as anyway. May as well get one.

high speed bullets are made in lead with additives like zink, tin and antimony, you may melt it at "low" temp, the metal jacket can be melt separately at "high" temp.
jacket may be nickel/stainless (magnetic or not) or brass, bullet may have a heart in high tensile steel (magnetic) in the lead.
the simpliest is a first melt for the "lead", discard magnetics stuff, and melt what's left.
I just got my first successful copper melt! I finally ordered a devil forge 4kg furnace to upgrade from my backyard setup and when I have the money I am definitely getting a bigger one they work amazingly.

When I was younger I worked at a lead smelter in Missouri. We made many alloys there. We added calcium , tin, copper, antimony you name it. We made strip lead, 100 pound pigs, 60 pound pigs and 1/2 ton ingots and one ton ingots, silver was a byproduct of the smelting process. We also produced 99.9 pure lead.
