One notable secret was the tension between the cast members. While their on-screen chemistry appeared seamless, conflicts and rivalries simmered backstage. In particular, one of the most popular characters, Mr. Lucas, played by Trevor Bannister left after a few series - and it seemed that money was the only reason. Despite the challenges, the cast managed to maintain a professional demeanor, preserving the show's beloved dynamic on screen.
Another scandal that emerged was the controversies surrounding the show's humor. "Are You Being Served?" often pushed the boundaries of societal norms with its risqué jokes and innuendos, which occasionally garnered criticism from conservative viewers and watchdog groups. The show's creators, however, defended their comedic choices, asserting that the innuendos were essential to the show's distinctive brand of humor.
Additionally, the production faced financial challenges that could have jeopardized its success. The show's budget constraints were evident in the limitations of the set design and production values.
Despite these obstacles, the creative team's ingenuity allowed them to craft a world that resonated with audiences, proving that a compelling storyline and memorable characters could transcend budgetary limitations.
However, despite backstage tensions, creative conflicts, and financial constraints, the show managed to captivate audiences with its unique brand of humor and endearing characters. The controversies surrounding its content only fueled its popularity, solidifying its status as a beloved classic in British television history.
These secrets and scandals, however, did make things much harder and the show’s creators had to work hard to make the show go as long as it did.

I don't think the people who made this video understood the show.
Totally agree. Doubtful if the creators watched any episodes.
Absolutely!
I agree. They started with ‘cast changes’.
I'm pretty sure they didn't watch it either.
And, what was that part about the Chinese actor in the middle about?
Mr. Grainger was replaced by Mr. Tebbs, followed by Mr. Goldberg, Mr. Grossman, and Mr. Klein.
Why is it that everything this channel puts out is absolutely riddled with inaccuracies?
Is the narrator's accent a clue?
@@MirlitronOne - Maybe, though if the shoe was on the other foot, and I were to put up videos on Yank sit-coms, one would at least have the courtesy of watching them first, doing a little research (easy enough given the amount of dedicated fan sites out there) etc.
Frankly, everything this uploader puts out is simply abysmal. 👎
@@MirlitronOne Nope, Americans loved this show. It was shown on our public broadcast channel and ran for years. The inaccuracies in this vide are down to careless research and the channel creaters not caring because people keep watching.
I don't know. I "unsubscribed" months ago (before your comment) due to the glaring errors in research, pronunciation, copy editing, etc.
@@ericteneyck8691We "discovered AUBS through our PBS channels. The main characters knew thst they were adored by we Yanks and they we come over and do guest spots for the PBS stations.
Some poor research and mispronunciation here.
Wendy Richard played MISS Brahms (not Mrs) and Mollie Sugden was MRS Slocombe (not Miss). The actor who played Mr Grainger was indeed Arthur Brough but his surname is pronounced "Bruff", not "Bro".
AYE IT WAS BROUGH AS IN THE TOWN IN HUMBERSIDE YORKSHIRE HE DID A BRILLIANT IMPRESSION OF WISTON CHURCHILL ON THE SHOW AS WELL
Sounds american or canadian🙄
@@jessiejames7492Awwwwwwww. What a quaint comment. 🤗
Absolutely correct and it was Harold Bennett who played young Mr Grace NOT Harold Snoad as this guy said.
@@jessiejames7492 A Canadian would have gotten everything right.
Harold Bennett played Young Mr Grace not Harold Snoad
What has the Mind Your Language clip got to do with the secrets and scandals of are you being served?
Arthur Brough had been written into the next series but died in the same year as his wife, he was replaced by the character Mr Tebbs. Interestingly enough, Arthur Brough's "The Arthur Brough Players" had many famous actors in its company including Trevor Bannister. Trevor Bannister (Mr Lucas) was born in the same year as Nicholas Smith (Mr Rumbold), both born in 1934.
So many incorrect details on this. Just shows you shouldn't always believe what you hear on 'tinternet.
Also never heard him referred to as 'Arthur Bro'. Always Arthur BRUFF spelt Brough.
@winders128 "Ough" - the English language's greatest achievement.
Was your Mr. Grace first name ever mention?
I believe there are some characters didn't just up and leave the show by choice...they died .
You can't please everyone . I loved the suggestive language . I watched every episode , I still watch it . ❤❤😂😂
It is this Yanks second favorite British Comedy, right behind Dads Army!
I still use "You have all done so very well!" and makes me happy when someone calls me Mr Grace! : )
The whole idea behind some of the funniest "Britcoms" was FARCE. And they repeated a lot of the jokes (or variations - for example, Mrs. Slocombe's p - - - y) because the double entendres were always a fond feature of British comedy. AYBS had the same creator as 'Allo! 'Allo! (Remember the Fallen Madonna with the Big B - - bies? LOL) And I do not believe AYBS was more vulgar than any other British comedy of its time. They ALL did double entendres! And people loved it.
It's MISS Brahms and MRS Slocombe ! not the other way around.
4:07 what did the Chinese gentleman have anything to do with AYBS?
lol. i was confused too. Must have been for another video.
i think the person making this video might have had a glass of wine during the process
Robert Ya Fu Lee doesn't even seem to be connected to Are You Being Served in the slightest. No mention of ever acted in it or having done any kind of production for it. Checked both the Wiki and IMDB. He has an relative impressive acting career, mind you. But not for AYBS.
Maybe he got confused with the Asian man who had his head stuck in the bucket. But he didn't do much to build him up like this video did for AYBS.
When you learn more from the comments than the video. 😅
I LOVE this show. The Humor in it is fantastic!!!!
Staying in the shop... that man was never in AYBS So confusing. Have you even seen the show?
What does the Chinese actor from Mind Your Language have anything to do with this??
😅😂
And most of this part of the clip featured David Yip who played The Chinese Detective!
the name of the actor playing young mr. grace is HAROLD BENNET not HAROLD SNOAD
Wasn't Harold Snoad a TV producer or something?
@@simonpearn479 Yes, for Keeping Up Appearances.
I must be getting old, Mrs Slocombe doesn't look so old any more ....
You've got the names of the two main female characters the wrong way round. They were actually Mrs Slocombe and and Miss Brahms. The latter was played by Wendy Richard and not Wendy Richards.
Technically the show started out centering around Mr Lucas as a fairly new young staff member and dealing with the stuffiness of the way the store ran..
Then Mr Humphries became the breakout star and was tailored more around him and Mrs Slocome story wise quite often
Loved this show, sadly I think after Mr Lucas (Trevor Bannister) left things weren’t quite the same!
Hus replacement, Mike Berry, recorded a version of the 1916 song "The Sunshine of Your Smile". His recording, for a while, became the most played song at funerals.
Read my comment above re. Trevor B. His reputation preceded him…no one wanted to work with him. He was so different from the characters he played. He was arrogant, demanding, condescending…need I go on…
One of the best English shows ever.
wendy richards was beautiful
We're happy to know that you're a fan of the show. In your opinion, what is its best episode?
Too many to mention. 😁@@FactsVerseUK
No mention of Mr. Goldberg, Mr. Tebbs or Mr. Klein.
Of the replacements, I have always thought that Alfie Bass was great as Mr. Goldberg, and should have been brought in after Arthur Brough passed. James Hayter (Mr. Tebbs), Milo Sperber (Mr. Grossman), and Benny Lee (Mr. Klein) just weren't "it". Loved Larry Martyn as "Mr. Mash", but Arthur English's "Mr. Harmon" was played to perfection. Mike Berry was good enough, but it's a shame Trevor Bannister couldn't stay on. He and John Inman were so great together.
@@koilvondailey8030 : I thought Larry Martyn's character was called "Mr. Nash" not Mr Mash....
@@blackpoolbarmpot Nope. It's pronounced, "eye-GORE."
John Inman was my favourite I love this show it was so funny kym
I love watching are you being served great show.
The cast mates always seemed to enjoy working together so much! So sad that they've all passed away!! 😎
My favorite character was Mrs Slocumbe of course.
I ve loved this show for 30 year---Mr. Robert Lee??? This video got so many things wrong.
"Harold Snoad!!" 8:02 ... Harold BENNETT!!
Do your research!!
"They do very good reasearch, them Germans."
Sorry, wrong Harold Bennett character.
What a great show. This is a poor job of representing it though. So many things are wrong with this guy's video.
Oh my gosh, this is full of errorsI t was Miss Brahms and Mrs Slocombe. This vid talks about cast changes but seems to insinuate that after Arthur Brough (Bruff, not Bro) there were no more senior sales assistants. There was Mr Percival Tebbs, Mr Goldberg and then Mr Grossman and Mr Klein helped out for a while. And Young Mr Grace's real name was not Harold Snoad, (he was a producer of BBC shows) it was Harold Bennett. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harold_Bennett
Mr. Grainger was my favorite!
Glass of water for Mr. Grainger!
They were all my favorites.
loved it all growing up. Tho, what does Robert Lafoo yee ? have to do with AYBS?
as far as i can tell, nothing at all!
Mrs slocombe (molly sugden) was i think the best she could adapt to each storyline with ease but the whole series were entertaining
I think she was funnier in Grace&Favor (her past secrets were being exposed and the way she was drinking her gin and tonic 😅😅😅)
It was hard to replace Arthur Brough. although some did : James Hayter (Mr. Tebbs); Alfie Bass (Mr. Goldberg); Milo Sperber (Mr. Grossman); Benny Lee (the shoe salesman). My favourite was Alfie Bass.
I just loved Mr. Grainger and his fixation with Bing Crosby.
Why is a Yank doing this commentary?
He has no idea!
I watched a Factsverse about Dad's Army today, narrated by a British woman, and it was just as bad. Mispronunciations, mismatched images, factual errors.
Americans loved this show. It was shown on our public broadcast channel and they ran the reruns for years. The inaccuracies in this video are down to careless research and the channel creaters not caring because people keep watching.
It's bad when just ANYBODY can make and publish videos like this - with so much misinformation, and very poor production values. I am all for amateur creators being to make and publish videos of their own, but the problem is that they don't work hard enough on the FACTS and background before they start. And so many of them use the insipid AI voices - but sometimes their own voices are worse!
Watched this show in the 70s on NZ TV very popular here Mr Lucas was my favorite character
I liked John Inman & Mrs. Slocum the most.😍🤩
Arthur Brough (Mr. Grainger) died in 1978. That is why he was replaced.
In the NorthEast New Jersey USA where I'm from British comedy was very popular I grew up on British comedy The Young Ones in the early 80's loved them..The good life with Felicity Kendal was also great.. Faulty Towers..and more..
All of the cast each one were special
No clue who is doing this video but they really need to do some research about this show. Most of us who was watching this video has seen at least every episode at least a hundred times or more, and probably could have done a better video ourselves
I loved and watched this show on BBC America
It's great that Americans and others are now learning about these old British shows.
Our local PBS station in Dallas began playing British sitcoms in the early 1970's, and most other PBS stations soon followed suit. So, many American have been watching them and loving them for more than 50 years!
@@jonnaosborne1832 Oh that's great.
I'm confused. What did the actor Robert Ya Foo Lee have to do with Are You Being Served?
Aaah, soooo?
@@wassername888 yes, they could have mentioned that. what was all that for 1 episode. LOL nuts
When i play a character that is True Neutral, i treat as a "Humphries" Going neither one way or the other! : )
Would be nice if a chat bot program hadn't compiled the narration. There are so many mistakes, I don't know where to start. And WTF was that about some actor halfway through who had NOTHING to do with this show?
Love it❤
Mr Lucas and Mr Madh were my favorite characters 😅
4:05 to 5:20 seems to be put in by accident as it relates to Mind your Language! instead of AYBS?
Mr. Grainger WAS replaced, first by Mr. Tibbs, then two others, in sequence. And Harold Snoad was not Young Mr. Grace.
Clearly, whoever runs this channel has never watched this series.
Loved Are You Being Served, but wasn’t quite the same when Trevor Bannister left
Mr Lucas died tending his garden. They found his body in his garden
Mr lucas Trevor bannister was the best it wasn't the same without him
I think Mike Berry as Mr. Spooner was a fine addition to the cast. Actors come and go and characters need to be replaced. I liked both Mr. Lucas and Mr. Spooner, each good and each different in their ways.
I acted with Arthur English and Trevor Bannister in the late 70’s. Arthur was such a nice man, Trevor…toxic…
Arthur English was in one of my favourite series ever, The Ghosts of Motley Hall. I watch the Christmas Special every Christmas Eve.
I also think the commentator did not understand the show
It's MRS. Slocombe, not miss...!
42 years ago, one morning Mr. Slocomb goes out to buy a pound of slightly salted butter from Sainsbury's and he disappears 😊
Please please do proper research. Did you ever actually see the show?????
The footage shown only occasionally matched with the content of the narrative which is annoying
none of these are secrets........and most of the info is incorrect. Grainger was replaced by Mr Thibbs then again . And you didn't reveal why Mash left . what a lame video
i’m humphreys
and i’m free.!
😉
🤣😂🤣
✌🏻🌏🇦🇺🤘🏻
Please look up the definition of the word "scandal" before using in a video title. Don't rely on AI to be correct.
I liked Mr Harmon best . None of the other replacements for Mr Granger were a fit .
Miss Brahms, Mrs Slocombe ...
Generally a good video, but perhaps the meaning of "scandal" needs to be reviewed...
Too many mistakes. Please do better research or don't bother at all.
Wendy Richard 🥰
Filled with lots of errors.
Mrs Brahms and Miss Slocombe? What show was Facts Inverse watching? This is rubbish. Sudden cast changes?
Just more clickbait, with a truly bizarre and unrelated bio in the middle
There were NO bloody scandals ffs. Click bate crap
"Miss Brahms"!!.
"Mrs Slocome" !!
Get someone who understands the humour!!
I picked that up straight away, then I turned it off.
The guy who researched this show needs to try again and much harder before making a video.
Grainger WAS replaced - several times (Brough himself died).
Harold Bennett also died. He and Kenneth Waller (the Grace Brothers) appeared in only one episode together, and even that aired after Young Mr. Grace died.
Try making this video again, friend, once you know what you’re talking about.
I much preferred Mr. Mash. Never warmed up to Mr. Harmon.
What are you playing at??? Mind your Language included with Are you being Served. I dont see the relevance????
Did i miss something, or was the Chinese actor completely irrelevant to this video?
mr huntfries
That was the worst recounting of TV show I ever saw your AI is BROKEN
Oh, for God's sake!
MRS. Slocum! MISS Brahms! You're obviously not a fan.
Old Mr Grace was unlikeable.
Nobody could replace Harold Bennett. Especially an actor visibly much younger.
He was my second favorite after Grainger😊
When John Inman hosted at the NZ TV and film awards in the eighties, he was publicly booed and yelled at ,led byPeter Wells a NZ writer known for gay themes in his writing. Inman was seen as characterising gay men in a stereotypical fashion similar to Benny Hill and Dick Emery in seventies British tv comedy. These popular caricatures of camp men and big breasted women rife in the seventies in British comedy were viewed as offensive and out of date in the following decades.
Yes,I remember that well,John was co host of the show along ET Host Leeza Gibbons but the awards show itself was poorly organized and became an utter shambles leaving the two hosts trying their best to salvage the whole thing-the man who insulted John was later critised in the papers while John,to his credit, was dignified about it Auckland New Zealand 2023
Is the narrator of this video AI? Miss Slocombe? Mrs Brahms? Learn the names of the characters in the show before making a video supposedly 'informing' people about it. And also learn the meaning of the word 'scandal'. A scandal is not a.) learning that the humour was full of bawdy euphemisms (which is pretty much the key reason FOR the show's popularity). Not is it b.) an actor leaving their role because they have other work lined up. Oh and "pussy" is not a euphemism for "cat" 🤣
This was a TERRIBLE look back. Did you even watch the series?
Would be nice to see a British television if you're going to superimpose a British tv show onto it. Poor attention to detail there. Nearly all TH-cam channels make this sloppy mistake...they probably weren't even born when CRT televisions were the norm, but to any Brit watching this, from that era, this is most definitely NOT a British colour tv. Details matter. Don't do it again!
Load of pointless crap
What a waste of time here. Whoever or whatever AI did it, never actually watched the show. This channel never gets anything right.
this is very mediocre by Brit Sitcom standards..
Too silly and too vulgar.
😂 An old fashioned British comedy show, even back when it first appeared in the early 1970s. But not at all funny today. So dated, sexist, and simply offensive !. Luckily comedy has more away from all the dry - sexist humour ..........😢
What a sad man you are if you have a sense humour I would be surprised based on a better time and not a Golden age for deviants and snowflakes
I bet yr fun at Ann Summer parties.
@@Glamrockqueen no need to guess your way of life deviant of course.
yawn
Misery; you must be a great laugh.
THINK MY FAVOURITE WAS MRS SLOCOMBE ALWAYS REFERING TO HER CAT MY PUSSY😅
When you have AI to produce a TH-cam video, you get shitty ones like this.
