It can be any angle. It's better if the angle is long and steep because that gives you a better result with the line and a better look at the fine point of the line. The step gauge can be slid in at any angle
thanks for this Sam. So simple but so very useful. I made mine from acrylic so it's more permanent and not subject to temp and humidity.
