I'm portuguese and we don't have the «siesta» as much as in Spain, but he was merely saying that to avoid the stereotype that people from Alentejo and South Spain have, regarding «la Siesta», and because of that that they don't like to work or whatever. Even here in Portugal, people from Alentejo, «alentejanos» are «bad mouthed» because of that... The little nap in the afternoon...

I lived in Barcelona for 2 years and nearly no one took siesta there. Maybe in other parts of the country it is a thing.
Siesta is, as he said, a summer thing for when you're on vacation, or for the weekend
