Dick Grayson is my favourite comic book character of all time. What makes Nightwing special is that he is everything Batman couldn't be. Batman is definitely one of if not the greatest superhero in all of fiction but he is obsessed with the mission and has given up his life to be Batman but Nightwing didn't. Instead of lingering in the darkness Dick moved on and celebrated his parents' lives, he formed relationships, became a true leader and devoted his life to helping others out of the kindness of his heart. Dick Grayson is only human yet he is more heroic than most superheroes.

I count it as fanfic bullshit being allowed into an otherwise great series. Like of like Star Wars, and Marvel with Disney. Or JJ Abrams/Alex Kurtzman with Star Trek. Or the New 52 being created just so some dipshit could have Superman and Wonder Woman make out.

Growing up I idolized Batman, but now that I'm in my early 20s, I realize how important Dick Grayson is. He's everything Bruce wanted Batman to be: strict, but kind, intimidating yet being a symbol of hope. Commanding the respect of those around him not due to fear, but because everyone loves him. Dick Grayson is a man everyone loves, even Deathstroke called him the Prodigal Son. Dick has all the skill of Batman without the obsession, he has a life outside of crime. Even Batman himself called Dick a clearer version of what Batman was supposed to be.

Dick is and always will be Batman’s greatest accomplishment. He was in the same position Bruce was, yet because of him, dick was able to overcome it all and become a hopeful, jovial person who can love. Hes what more heroes should strive to be, I hope the proposed Pattinson Batman sequel goes with a storyline similar to the animated series, I have faith they can knock it out of the park

As a huge fan of Nightwing, this is honestly still one of his best incarnations! He isn’t particularly funny like in the more recent comics as well as the old ones, but he’s still cool, capable, and compassionate. For a brief time in the mid to late- 90’s, DC Comics tried REALLY hard to make him super edgy in order to pander to the youths. Plenty of monologues and almost no smiles. Eventually, they realized that they should just let him be himself instead of pandering to the times. But despite technically being in the midst of it, I honestly feel like the DCAU was subtly saying that this era is stupid, and that relying on others and staying optimistic and trusting even after SO much trauma is a FAR greater example of strength and capability than any brooding or monologuing ever was!
Bruce Timm has some unresolved issues with trust methinks. The late 90's edginess really seems to have come into DC from DCAU when they ported Harley over.
Since I started reading comics in the 80's (the last issue of DitF was my first comic book) I got used to the way it was before the edginess.
The friction between them wasn't trust issues, it was that Dick was so much like Bruce and he was afraid of losing himself. That's why he was always so unwilling to take the mantle for Bruce if the time came.
That's also what made him taking it so weird but good to the old fans when he finally did. He finally figured out he COULD be both Batman and his own man
Nothing will ever fix the disgusting story line between Barbra and Bruce
And that is why I consider that story just purely fanfiction and and non-canon

Dick Grayson is a king among kings. He's Bruce's greatest accomplishment in that he became an amazing hero, true leader, and warrior worthy of the very same Bat mantle. And best of all, he turned out the exact opposite of Bruce.
I think what I hate about Bruce Timm's Batgirl and Batman thing is his response he gave after backlash. That Batman "never had kids of his own" so he didn't know when you tell "a kid not to do something, they will want to do it more". He literally discredits Dick, Jason and Timm as family but also treats and refers to Barbara as a kid, like knowingly and intentionally which makes it all the creepier.
People underestimate Superman’s role in Grayson’s life. Grayson chose a Kryptonian name for his identity, to carry on not only Bruce’s legacy, but Clark’s legacy as well. Bruce might be his dad; but at the same time Clark is that cool uncle who tells him about alien history.

It sucks that Dick got dealt a bad hand in the DCAU, I'm glad Teen Titans and The Batman came around to give him a better chance.
It's sad what hell he was put through, the lies, Bruce not being able to show him the right amount of love and it rubbed off on him, Barbara giving up on him and telling Terry their relationship was just "puppy love", yet they both act like they did nothing wrong. Wish he got shown in Batman Beyond instead of just mentioned. I know he appeared in the Hush comic but it's not canon anymore.
Puppy love? The writers did that with Barbara and Dick? Why do they have to make her a dismissive cold hearted bitch? Give her a line than just hints at young love that did not work out, and a painful growing experience. Puppy love? that makes it childish and stupid.
@@dirus3142 honestly that's how Barbara is, especially older Barbara dismissive of others causes, relationships and the impact on others lives. She is more self absorbed then when she was Batgirl and in a sense, some of Bruce's personality rubbed off on her to.

Ah, another great Dick Grayson Episode. I love how in the end Dick actually trusts Bruce and Barbara more, and lets them help him, that's character growth and we see that his wounds are healing.
I still can't believe they merged Jason and Tim, I was so excited to see Jay sitting in the Manor's library reading Shakespeare out loud when I watched the animated series. 😭
Jason was dead and unpopular when the series came out, it wouldn't have made sense to have him. Yet still, DCAU's Tim has a lot more of Jason than he does Tim, to be honest.
The Bruce and Barbara relationship is probably the absolute worst thing about the DCAU for me. Hell, even though the Arkhamverse reframes Barbara and _Tim_ as a couple instead, at least that has a happy ending and doesn't involve a weird-ass relationship between a man in his 40s and a young woman he's known since she was a teenager and who was romantically involved with his fucking *son.*

One thing that's a little weird about the DCAU is the Teen Titans. I know they've been mentioned in the DCAU but they're a huge part of Grayson's history. This might be why many believed that Teen Titans, the 03-07 show, was part of the DCAU though mistaken
My guess is that at some point that was supposed to happen when he was starting out as nightwing but got scrapped
I feel like the Teen Titans show fits more with the style of The Batman show from 2004.

TBF, the DCAu not using the Titans might explain Dicks character progression within this universe. Without the Titans to balance out the gloomy parts of being raised by the dark knight Dick, knowingly or not, adapted some of Batmans negative behavior which ultimately led to his and Bruces relationship just crumbling in on itself.

Love your videos; hate Barbara being used as a romantic interest for EVERYONE in the bat family. I think Barbara and Dick could have worked but many people prefer Dick with Kori. Not too keen about Barbara and Jason and definitely not Barbara and Tim (wtf???). And then we get to Barbara and Bruce. I'm convinced that was just the writer's sick fantasy and I refuse to accept it as canon. Super disgusting. Makes me feel sick lmao wish I could go back in history to stop that from ever happening.
I feel like Barbara's character is ruined simply by her romantic and sexual involvement with literally everyone. She doesn't seem like the type of person to cheat regularly so it's kind of confusing, what with the whole "justice" and "fighting evil" schtick. That goes for almost all super heroes that have a more positive persona too. The most annoying thing about comics for me is how every author has a different idea on the character, which is important of course but they end up ruining the main continuity. They're essentially given the authority to make their fanfiction about the characters canon.

I agree. For me it depends on the version of Dick but I'm fine with both Kori and Babs (shit go full poly and have all three in a ship IDC). But yeah, Babs isn't just the romantic option, she's a great crime fighter in her own right and deserves better than being designated girlfriend or whatever.
Yeah between Barbara, Talia, Selina and Harley they were used all to "bounce" off all the Robins. It just seems like all of them are left being lonely because interactions happen within weakness. Especially for the few *incidents* when Dick was with the Titans.
Babs has more of a sisterly relationship with Jason, Tim, and Damian. I actually kind of liked Barbara with Ted Kord 😅 Dick and Barbara is cute too though.
@@KG0605 Yeah, they have a sibling-type relationship in most versions which is lovely. Unfortunately, in classic comic fashion, different writers like to ‘experiment’ in really weird ways. For example, in the Three Jokers comic series Jason tells Barbara that he really admires her and that she makes him want to be a better person. Which could be a really lovely SIBLING, FRIEND OR MENTOR dynamic, especially because of their interactions with the joker (even though jason’s was ofc far worse) except they end up KISSING.
In the Arkham games, Barbara and Tim are together for some reason?? I think it’s because they wanted to have batgirl and robin but I don’t understand why they chose Tim. Dick was a robin at one point too. I don’t care if they aged Tim up, it felt too icky. And I’m pretty sure Tim and Barbara have been together in at least one comic series too. Gross.

Bruce/Babs is Bruce Timm's favorite ship, and he wedged it into _Batman Beyond, Mystery of the Batwoman,_ and _Killing Joke._ You can rest assured that it's not canon, Timm was the only one who wanted this enough to write it.
Dick/Babs is how they end up in Young Justice (so far), and Dick/Kori is how they end up in the later Teen Titans.

2:02 - 2:18 Honestly, it's true. The episodes with Robin in it are more (generally) are a bit more warmer than compared to when Batman is by himself. Robin always had a sense of humor, he was a positive influence on the usually grim Batman. I even remember Christmas with the Joker when Dick & Bruce had Christmas dinner together and watched "It's a Wonderful Life." I never fully understood this until I watched Robin's Reckoning, but Dick has been with Bruce for a longtime, probably longer with him than his real parents, he genuinely views Bruce as a father figure and shows him love as if he was his father.
Robin's voice when he says "Stuff your advice Batman! You and your stone cold heart, you don't know how I feel" You could feel the anger when he says this, how he views Batman and how emotionless he can be. Compliments to the voice acting

Do the Bruce and Barbara video already! There is no avoiding that it happened! Mystery of the Batwoman and Batman Beyond both confirm it, maybe the pregnancy comic book issue is apocryphal, but where the relationship ends up in BB is unavoidable. Bruce committed SO MANY sins on this one. He broke the trust of his best friend (Jim), his son (Dick), his student (Barbara), and his employee (also Barbara). He sets a really bad example for Tim, who 100% knows, and watches him try to ghost her. Alfred for sure said something more than snarky to Bruce. Not to mention, how it all plays into his dynamic with Wonder Woman. If he puts her down before the Barbara relationship it makes him a hypocrite. If it's after his affair, him declining Diana is overcompensation and guilt for his worst mistake.

The fact that this series is so highly regarded yet ends on such sour notes makes it hard to get into.
Very good analysis, dude! I'm not big fan of "You Scratch my back" (I don't hate but also don't love it and Selina flirting with Dick is too weird), but watching your video made me have a new perspective.
In fact, it also made me realize that I took alot of inspiration from Dick arc in this episode and use it in a O.C I'm developing recently.
This character is called Spectruman, the alter ego of Marcus Dumon, a 15 old student who is choosen by Percyon, a dying alien warrior, to recive his cosmic power and continue his legacy (as the legacy of his fallen comrades) become a protector for the universe. Basically Spectruman is mix of sci-fy concepts of Green Lantern with teenage drama from characters like Spider Man or Invincible).
In the first arc, Marcus is already establish as well meaning average kid . He's not very good at sports, he's not the best student in the class and isn't very talent compare to his friends, causing him to be bit pessimistic and have sort of inferiority complex. While his friends and family (compose by his mother and sister) try to help, he rejects and close himself from them, beliving he needs to do things on his own and that their help will just make him feel more uncapable and that his mother don't trust in him. There's also the fact he's dealing with grief for the lost of his father, resulting in him having that "man of the house" mentality, he belives he needs to do everthing by himself.
His relationship with other becomes more difficult after he become Spectruman, as Marcus let the fame as local hero get over his head, with his heroic actions and power giving him a feeling of safety against insecurities, that he start to spend way to much time as Spectruman and forgetting to be there for his friend and family, resulting in big argument between him and his mother. It's only after his first fight with his school bully-turned-villain Cold Bones (basically the Hot Streak to Spectruman's Static Shock), in which many people get injure by the collaterall damage, with his friend being hit in the head and put into a coma, that Marcus realize his mistake and becoming afraid and even more insecure, feeling that he's truly uncapable of anything.
He's only able to overcome his shame and guilty after interaction with his mother (who by the way I also gave arc about dealing with her own insecurites), with the two making amends and his mother telling Marcus that he doesn't need to worry about impressing her or anyone else or be a "perfect version of himself", that he's good by just being himself and capable to solve his problem, but to always remember that her and his friends will always be there if he needs. In the end Marcus learn not just to accept his flaws but also, much like Dick Grayson, that asking help from others is nothing to be ashamed, that his love and connection for his friends and family don't makes him weak, it what gives him reason be stronger.
It's not the most original story for a teen hero, but it's a story that should be told during these times. Keep up the good work man!

I'm actually aware about the simplicity of my story but I think it works for what I had in mind for Spectruman growth as hero and character, with things starting simple but slowly getting more complicate and complex as he becomes more mature.
This would be reflect in the scenario his adventures takes place, starting as teenager drama on Earth but slowly moving towards big adventures in space, as he learns more about the mythology behind his cosmic power ad those who had it before him.

Hey have you read Wayne family adventures on Webtoon? I consider it the "happy end" that comics never get. It feels like the final villian is beaten. The good guys have won, and while gotham is still bad, it is on an acceptable scale. There we follow all the members of the batfamily, not as crimefighters, but as people who are living their live and treasuring each other. It just feels so nice. I would love to hear what you think about it.

After watching a bunch of the Batman animated movies and Young Justice i gotta say i really wish there was more Dick Grayson/Nightwing centric stories.

Crazy how both Batman and Catwoman were groomers, no wonder they used to work together.
The thing is, Nightwing is a culmination of all the people that love him: The Graysons, Batman (and the Batfamily), Superman, the Teen Titans, and Starfire. He was made in the New Teen Titans and his development into an individual and a good leader happened there. This is no critique of the video or anything, I just get annoyed in general about how people forget to mention the other heroes and people in Dick's life that made him into the Nightwing we know. The reason he left the Batfam to gain independence is to discover the world outside and not be stuck in Bruce's cold world -- and he succeeded. But the credit for his development and independence is not with Bruce or Barbara, no. It's with himself and the connections he sought outside of them. The love and open communication he found outside of them.

Absolute Batman and Robin by Morrison and Quietly is the best Batman run. Dick as Batman and Damian and Robin are my favorite dynamic duo.

And then the writers forgot all about the sad Dick pathos, ruined his relationship with Starfire, had him become the Batman of the Titans during one of their lowest points, they tried to turn him into the focal point of DC, Damian accidentally killed him and he had the whole Ric Grayson arc. And during all of this the writers saw fit to give him a dump truck of an ass.

Having some idiot at DC insist on changing it because small-d dick means things that might offend someone would be so very corporate. I'm a Richard who prefers to use Dick for the short form of the name these days, and have frequently had people tell me flat out they won't use it because it's disrespectful, dirty or makes them uncomfortable.
