I went to petsmart yesterday to get a thermostat for my new snake setup and they literally had none. I asked about it and they said it is OPTIONAL so they don't carry them. I decided to test it out (with no snake of course) and my zoo med reached way over a 100. Glad to see someone talking about this
Kianna Sullivan I’m receiving my first ball python on Tuesday, (got him from BHB reptiles if you’re familiar) and I got the same answer from PetSmart! Loyd's LizardsIII yea if you are a brain dead reptile pet owner. This video was useless and had no info about substrates heat conductivity and the fact that she used hamster bedding in a tank for a demonstration....no shit a heat mat gets that hot...that's why you use a thermostat to control the heat and have atkeast 4 inches of proper substrate for your reptile so the heat can be safely managed...

Zoo Med, Zilla, and Fluker's really should require their mats to be sold with the thermostats to prevent serious burns or even house fires. It could literally mean life or death for your animal! Thank you so much for making this video!

My 17 y/o son ran away (yes I did file report and a writ) and left his gecko. I was so against him getting one, or any reptile, snake, critter.... because I KNOW HOW FLIGHTY AND IRRESPONSIBLE HE IS ... I am not a monster so I can't just ignore this living creature in my home. I love animals but am fearful of lizards, snakes etc.... I have no idea what I am doing. I am youtubing everything. I lucked out and got a 20 gallon terrarium. (He has been in 10 gallon since he was brought here) it came With Zilla heat pad plus extra heat lighting fixtures and light and all kinds of extra stuff. But mainly geared for slider turtles. I don't know or think that geckos need a terrfauna waterfall.....anyways. It has the Zilla pad and I have been so scared to plug in since I don't know how to measure the heat..... I am so glad for this video. I am going to move him to my studio which stays about 75 degrees And I bought uvb lights and he has a red light for night. If anyone has any knowledge to share please respond.
I am so happy that you made this video. I hope this encourages everyone to be safe and get a thermostat! Before I got my leopard gecko I set up the enclosure and plugged in the heat mat without a thermostat to see just how hot it would get and it truly was reaching 110+ degrees. Thermostats are absolutely a necessity!!!
Excellent video. Thank you for taking the time to put this information out there. A lot of people don’t realize just how important a thermostat/temp controller is !
can someone tell me how one is supposed to stick a mat on the bottom of a tank, when the mat doesn´t have a sticky side? like can you use regular duckttape?
This is such a well done and informative video. I don't understand why this is the first well done video I've seen on the topic. I have an ExoTerra that gets way over 125 and a ZooMed that caps out at about 110. My crested needs 78-82 F during this season and would easily burn if I didnt have the Inkbird thermostat. My dubias also use a thermostat so they dont fry
Now do it with heat rocks! My teacher has a heat rock, no humidity, feeds only live mealworms and crickets (she just throws them in there and hopes he eats them) with no calcium, except for calcium sand for her leopard gecko. She also has a goldfish with gravel and sharp decor in a 10 gallon tank. And a ball python in a 20 gallon long with no humidity or heat at all. He had stuck sheds (so does the gecko) always stuck all over him. He's fed live, too. OH and a goliath birdeating tarantula (they get 12 inches or larger) in the tiny hermit crab keepers. She's terrified of it but has it anyway. Don't let me forget, she has a sucula tortiouse egg (ignore mah spelling) and has no plans to find a proper setup. EDIT/UPDATE: She let me get the gecko! Now she's spoiled half to death and named Bonsai.
@@sjsosokdksksk Why? Just print out some care guides, and evidence that the rock is dangerous (and there's plenty) and give it to her. Or see if you can drop it in her teacher mailbox. They all have one. Slip it under her door. There are a million ways to, however, I wouldn't stay silent.
If you want to make a big deal about it, take pictures (LOTS OF PICS AND VIDEO to prove what is and isn't available for the animals) and mail anonymous complaint letter to your principal, department head, etc be sure to include properly care sheets so s/he has the appropriate information. Hey I just want to say this is the first time I’ve seen this topic go up and I have mentioned it in videos but I still use them but with a temp gun I just have never made a video of it so I want to say you’re one smart cookie and I know you don’t need it but you got a new subscriber and keep up the good work and stay safe🦎👊😷💞
I am in the process of getting a leopard gecko and I’m so glad i saw this! I have looked at care sheet after care sheet and so many videos and nothing about a thermostat have been mentioned.
When I put a heat mat in my BPs setup I ran it unregulated until it got as hot as it was going to get. Then I put the probe over the hottest part of the mat. Hot spots move over time. I set it to 90 and I get temps up to 94 in other spots. I also made a cover for the probe by cutting small PVC pipe in half. Put it over the probe and siliconed it down the siliconed both ends closed so the probe is in it's own little bubble. I did that cuz if the snake sits on the probe it'll cause the probe to read lower than the temp the glass actually is and it'll get hotter than what you set it to
I use snake carpet that doesn't absorb all the heat which gets the temp to 78ish, using a heat bulb in the morning(that with a thermostat) to raise the temp a bit, and only heat pads at night for a day night cycle. It's a bit more complicated than just getting a thermostat.
Yea the woman at petsmart said “theres no need for a regulator” on this exact zoo med mat. It was almost at 120 degrees way to hot for my ball python i have a regulator though thats now set at 95
Good practical video with real time temperatures, thinking of using a heat mat in my terrarium for localised heat to grow orchids. I really hope people are using thermostats with heat mats for reptiles, being cold blooded they wont have the same reaction to hot surfaces that we have, they will burn and suffer later.
No pet stores in my area carry them so I’ve always ordered non-reptile specific thermostats off amazon like the one you used in this video It’s just crazy how stores don’t find them necessary
You should make a video about your leopard gecko! Like how you set up your tank and stuff. I have one and I’m trying to think of new ways to set up her tank because I want her to be able to have the best life possible but every video I find is either basic or super expensive/difficult (for me)
My thermostat hasn’t come in yet and I’m so paranoid about my bp’s health that I can’t sleep. I have to manually unplug and replug the heat Matt to keep it at 90 degrees
@@residentdocter9950 from my experience it was okay to leave it on overnight. If you want to keep it off just get a heat lamp and your bp should be fine until it arrives :)
Ive seen such bad burns in reptile groups due to UTH, and reptiles being overheated from CHE and basking bulbs not being set on thermostats and its honestly heartbreaking.
GREAT VIDEO. Thank you. Just as a point of reference. Bath water that is 105 degrees is too hot to sit in so imagine a reptile with no escape being exposed to even higher temperatures.
with both heat mat and thermostat without substrate it will be the correct temperature of what you set it as. But with a substrate like aspen fiber or coconut husk on top of the tank with the heat mat underneath do you need the substrate temperature to be the same temperature as the heat mat when the temp gun is reading 80-90 on the glass?
So how does the thermostat work? Does it just tell you the temperature and have an alarm when it gets over the certain temperature or does it actually lower the temperature
So can I just get flukers heat mat with a thermostat and temperature gun and thats cool ? Or do I need something to go between the mat and glass tank????
As long as there’s airflow under the heat mat (like if you use garage shelving, they have wire bottomed shelves) but if it will be directly against a shelf you’ll have to put some type of spacer so the heat mat isn’t sandwiched against the tank and shelf with no air. Small pieces of wood or those anti-scratch rubber bumpers should do it. Just enough to raise the tank so air can flow under it. :)
I’m having issues with my heat mat not putting enough heat up through the glass of my tank idk if the glass is just really thick but with the thermostat set at 95 it was only 80 in the tank so there is some temperature difference, I think a thermostat is 110% necessary to regulate but I think it’s good they can go higher temp wise so depending on the enclosure you have to be able to adjust 🤷🏼♀️but everyone should be offering thermostats
I literally just finished a video where someone was showing “ how to properly set up an under tank heat pad” and not once did he mention a thermostat 🤦🏼♂️
What if the thermostat fails? Wont ur animal just move if it starts getting too hot?. Thermostats can stop working.. does that mean the animal dies if the thermostat fails?... if so maybe we shouldnt use heat mats?...
Yeah my tank has a screen top for air flow and I have like 3 inches of substrate and a both of my heat devices are on a thermostat that turns them off and on to regulate the heat
I just adopted a noodle from a previous owner; he had a heat mat but no regulator. I had to order off of Amazon, and these couple days without it I've been wondering how high it actually is. Just came in the mail and set it up -- 105! Not sure how that little dude didn't fry. Now we're at a cool 94. :)
Hmmmm I bought brand new Zoo-Med mat and a thermostat two days ago. The mat took four hours plus a full night, until 1 30 PM next day to reach a measly 25/26%C (78.8F). The mat is attached directly to the glass of a nano sized dry tank, the pad takes up exactly the entire one side of the completely closed tank, the probe is directly on the opposite wall a mere 15cm ( 5.5") away. So ambient temps in the mini tank only reached 25/26%C after 17 hrs! Not sure I need the thermostat (also Zoo Med). This is incredibly slow and not nearly what you are getting by way of temps. It's pretty unless considering this is a mere nano tank of 15cm/20cm. I set the thermostat to 30%C (86F). It's far easier to cool things down with a mat that's getting hot, you can vary the distance between it and the glass, cover the bottom inside tank with a raised sheet of glass so the reptile has another safety layer and use a thermostat but it's impossible to make the mat get warmer? So I'm not worried at all just disappointed with the stupid thing. Reviews are very mixed on the net in regard to their efficiency so it's difficult knowing exactly. To the touch my Zoo-Med mat feels luke warm, like a cold cup of coffee. 😐 I'm more worried about all those reptiles dying of hyperthermia than being scalded.
Great video I just wish you would test one heat mat by its self at a time when you add three heating elements on the same glass at one time it's going to rise the temp of the other ones by passing on the heat thru the glass I mean that's what it's meant for
She should also test the actual heat in a tank with substrate because its placed under the tank and the heat has to get through the substrate in order to even give off the right heat shes doing it on a naked mate which that is never the case
Ah, this freaks me out! I just put a heat mat on, but my husband didn't get a thermostat. I was planning on going today but now reading the comments, pet stores don't carry them?! wtf.
Yea let me know how that goes for you. My thermostat I noticed isn’t working which is why I ordered 2 thermostats off amazon tonight (wish I would’ve gotten 2 to begin with) and now I’ve been on the internet all night trying to figure out what to do so my BP doesn’t over heat. I’m so scared I’m gonna wake up to him burned or worse.
Nice Vid!! So do you recommend me getting a 16 watt or a 8 watt for my milk snake? Also, I would rather put the mat directly in the bottom of the tank with the thermostat of course.
Abby Lafferty often times the bulb switching on and off poses a risk for fires. I would test the distance of the bulb beforehand and get a lamp stand so you can get a general idea of the maximum temperature that your bulb is going to be at the right distance. :)
Also making sure that your thermostat probe is directly on the hot spot or else the thermostat will keep trying to make it hotter and can get dangerously high.
I need help with this my probe has a suction cup that's pretty shitty I stick it to the glass on the warm side and the end of the probe touches the reptile carpet but the thermostat stays in the low 80s when I have it set to 92 for my juvenile leapord gecko BUT my handhelo thermometer (same brand she uses) reads the surface tempreture of the carpet (on warm side above heat mat) at 115 but when u touch it it doesn't feel anywhere near 115, thoughts?
@@javiermata3593 might need to replace the thermostat or the heat mat or both.? Then again it could also be a malfunction with the heat gun? How long has it been since the heat mat was last replaced? Also you can make sure your probe stays in place with aluminum/foil tape sold at hardware stores and on amazon. Also I don't recommend reptile carpet because it tends to rip out claws from leopard gecko hands and holds bacteria.
@@javiermata3593 is the probe directly on top of the hot.spot? Take up the reptile carpet and use your handheld to read the temperate of the heat mat and find the hottest spot on the heat mat (sometimes the temps fluxuate on the mat) then place the probe touching the hottest spot and place the substrate over top of that (in your case the reptile carpet).
I’m not sure if you read the comments still but does anybody know what thermometer that is? I’ve been looking for a good infrared one but they’re all either very expensive or the websites don’t look trustable
I just got an 8 watt Zilla mat, should I be worried? It’s for a 1.5 month old ball python. Ideally I will get a regulator but at the moment I don’t have one. The mat is touching the glass but there is ventilation room and inside the tank there is a layer of paper towel and coconut fiber so I know my snake will never come in direct contact with the glass.
I have the zoo med. and I have it on the bottom but when I touch the top of the glass it feels like there’s no heat. But I got the prob inside the hide and it stays around 80/85 So I’m kinda of a worry wort and idk. I tried to do a light but it was drying out the tank to fast. So I’m kinda stuck lol
I don’t have a heat lap and I have a small viv for my baby corn snake. WHY THE HELL IS MY HEAT MAT SAYING ITS 30C? is that bad? How do I get it back into the 20s
My dragon's tank has the ZooMed. No thermo. I stuck it to the bottom and let it run for about 3 hours. I use a reptile carpet instead of substrate. Only get 90 degrees on the carpet. Probably ok. I put a hide on top of the probe and got 95. Probably still ok. My beardie sleeps on it every night.
You have to be careful using an IR measurement tool like that. The material of the item and even the color can make a HUGE difference in readings in some cases. In addition, the IR reflectivity of the surface can also make a huge difference. Some materials and coatings even block IR wavelengths and an object can appear to be near 78F room temperature but when checked with a contact thermocouple it's at 110F. At any rate, testing different products like you are doing can result in significant differences in temps that may not accurately represent the temp of a given product so a direct comparison may be unfair. Even measuring at different colored areas of a given item can result in different temps. You need to determine in advance how these things affect the IR instrument, if at all.
I know this is late but I wouldn’t support petsmart by buying their animals. All animals come from breeding mills and they are kept in terrible conditions. Please look into adopting, rescuing or purchasing from a reputable breeder.
Brian Boi they heat up in just a few minutes to a dangerous temperature. They definitely need a thermostat, but you could put the thermostat on a timer. I have my radiant heat panel set to a thermostat on my tegu cage set to do a “night drop” to a lower temperature. So kind of similar to a timer. But I don’t think I timer would keep it from getting too hot.

Great video I just wish you would test one heat mat by its self at a time when you add three heating elements on the same glass at one time it's going to rise the temp of the other ones by passing on the heat thru the glass I mean that's what it's meant for
Agree
Awesome video !!!
Is a bn link thermostat good?
Nice Vid!! So do you recommend me getting a 16 watt or a 8 watt for my milk snake?
Also, I would rather put the mat directly in the bottom of the tank with the thermostat of course.
Can you do a pigeon care guide?
And the Grammy award goes to maddie round of applause , nice video thanks
What heat mat do you use🦎🐍🐢
My husband and I are trying to get a thermostat for our Leo's but we've been trying to manage the temp. Til we can buy it on Friday Jun 25th,2021
Awesome video.
Hey I was wondering what temperature should the heat mats be?
i got a reptitherm and the guy at pets smart said it would get 8-10 degrees higher than room temp.
Question is if set at 95 is it still warm enough to heat the surface of the bedding or even the air?
Helppp please my thermostat keep saying it’s at 105 but heat gun says 80
Wait I thought corn snakes need heat lamps not a heat mat
Does a heat lamp/basking bulb need a thermostat?
Abby Lafferty often times the bulb switching on and off poses a risk for fires. I would test the distance of the bulb beforehand and get a lamp stand so you can get a general idea of the maximum temperature that your bulb is going to be at the right distance. :)
@@MaddieSmith thank you!!
My heat may dosent feel hot to the touch is that good ? Or is that a sign my Matt dosent work
Have you or will you make a care video for a Taegu. I really love them and I would like some advice on how to properly care for one
I got a snake rn and I have a thermostat order but it won’t be here for a week will my snake be ok?
My thermostat won’t let me set the temperature is there anyway to fix that
I’m not sure if you read the comments still but does anybody know what thermometer that is? I’ve been looking for a good infrared one but they’re all either very expensive or the websites don’t look trustable
What thermostat do you recommend?
I'm using a heat matt for scorpions
How can I help my Leo's stay safe til we get it on Friday they're staying in their moist hide.
That good good content tho 👍🏼
I have the zoo med. and I have it on the bottom but when I touch the top of the glass it feels like there’s no heat. But I got the prob inside the hide and it stays around 80/85 So I’m kinda of a worry wort and idk. I tried to do a light but it was drying out the tank to fast. So I’m kinda stuck lol
what if i leave my heat mat on the side with no thermostat?
Hallelujah it’s here🙏🙏🙏
They work great for roaches unregulated though. Because, well at least mine can’t climb the side to touch it.
When I was an amateur reptile owner I burnt my carpet with one.
Thanks for this video
I don’t have a heat lap and I have a small viv for my baby corn snake. WHY THE HELL IS MY HEAT MAT SAYING ITS 30C? is that bad? How do I get it back into the 20s
Hi can I you 150 Infrared light bulb with this or a ceramic light with the same wattage please ?
I have a zoo med heat pad but I can’t find a way to regulate the temperature- does anyone know how? Please
Is Taylor Nichole Dean okay?
She's getting therapy and taking time away from most social media and TH-cam.
@@miyukiwynter885 thank you!!!
Zilla don't play
You need to determine in advance how these things affect the IR instrument, if at all.
does petco sell monitor lizards? if yes what species? i know they sell savannahs but idk about others. We don't have petco here in canada
I know this is late but I wouldn’t support petsmart by buying their animals. All animals come from breeding mills and they are kept in terrible conditions. Please look into adopting, rescuing or purchasing from a reputable breeder.
I’m thinking about getting a leopard gecko and i’m doing my research at the moment. It would be really cool if you could do a gecko video!👍🏻
Do you think it could be safe with a timer? Let’s say turn off every other hour or so?
Brian Boi they heat up in just a few minutes to a dangerous temperature. They definitely need a thermostat, but you could put the thermostat on a timer. I have my radiant heat panel set to a thermostat on my tegu cage set to do a “night drop” to a lower temperature. So kind of similar to a timer. But I don’t think I timer would keep it from getting too hot.
