@@chiebukachibee-zoraedu And a terrible movie at that. Retconning previous Pooh stories like the New Adventures of Winnie the Pooh, Pooh's Grand Adventure, the Tigger Movie, and Piglet's Big Movie, among other things, feels more like an attempt at sabotaging 2D animation. The company cared very little about 2D characters after they flanderized the Pooh cast. While Princess and the Frog felt like a celebratory send off to some people, Winnie the Pooh 2011 felt like a defecation not only on Walt Disney's Grave, but also A.A. Milne's. I'd argue in saying the "Christopher Robin" movie was a better Pooh sendoff than that flanderized tripe.
@@robbiewalker2831 This was meant as a reboot! Following the original Many adventures featurettes and starting over from scratch! I don't think anyone working on the movie had ill intentions! But I also agree and say that Christopher Robin is a better sendoff.
Lotte may be a spoiled woman, but she was good to Tiana. Not only did she helped Tiana a couple times, but she would voluntarily kiss Naveen (as a frog) to help them break the curse they are in, it's not that Lotte is still infatuated with the prince, but she had realized that Tiana had fallen in love with Naveen, and she wanted for her friend to find happiness.
It was the idea of marriage to a prince she liked not the person himself. Which bordered on creepy when she was basically asking the little brother how old he was at the end of the movie 😒. And Disney can't lie that away like they did with Ariel and Eric. Funny they made a note to say her age 16 yet neglected to say how old Eric was.🤔 Wonder why. They couldn't of been mentally brain washing little girls into dating older men???
@@Aaron_Heininger Funny how the directors of these 2 movies didn't want to make both in the first place, and neither Aladdin, Hercules and Moana. And that's why they are clichéd and have some bad morals and can be racist at times. Whereas Treasure Planet, a movie these 2 directors wanted to make in the first place turned to be a great movie and one of Disney's best movies with well written story, great character development and relationships, and important morals
Charlotte is the best best friend Disney character. She pays Tiana what she needs for her restaurant, she gives Tiana a brand new costume after hers is ruined, and she gives up *her dream of becoming a princess* because she sees that Tiana and Naveen genuinely love eachother. She's airheaded and spoiled, but she's a kind person. Additionally, so was her dad; he always paid Eudora good money for her dresses.
I will not stand for this Lottie slander. She was spoiled SWEET not spoiled RICH. She loved Tiana with every inch of her soul and would have done anything for her to be happy. And to each their own but I always read in the movie that Tiana’s mother was not a Maid or Nanny for the girls but a seamstress Lottie’s dad was paying heavily to make Lottie all her princess dresses, but also just to help Tiana’s mom and Charlotte’s current and permanent best friend.
Lotte was spoiled but she wasn't selfish. She helps out tianna multiple times. Over paying her in the beginning, giving support to her and a dress at the party when she was down and another at the end.
Honestly, I think you give Lottie way too little credit. Sure she's a spoiled brat, and throws a tantrum about not being able to marry a prince, but as soon as she realizes that *Tiana* is also upset, she drops everything to comfort her.
Plus she's not racist. Like, even in the slightest and neither is her father. That's really impressive given the time period. She doesn't get treated as a 2nd class citizen for her race or gender.
I noticed he glossed over that part. Lotti was the one that took Tiana upstairs to clean her up and gave her a dress to wear. She's a very relatable character in that a lot of people have had a friend like Lotti. Someone that can seem self centered and spoiled but who is more than willing to give her friends love and support when they need it.
The fact that the prince realizing over time on his own how his pampered life kind of set him up for failure is something that needs to be said and shown more often especially nowadays...
This is actually the best analysis Yeah the princess and the frog is up there with hunchback of Notre dame lion king and beauty and the beast in terms of quality
People are totally unfair towards Cinderella. It's not her fault that she's a victim of familial abuse since childhood and that she has literally NOWHERE to go. She's a woman in the 1800's who isn't married and whose home and fortune are being held hostage by her abusers. If she tried striking out on her own she'd likely end up on the streets homeless due to the lack of job opportunities for women back then. Not to mention she actually has several aspects to her personality that set her apart from her contemporaries. She doesn't just take the abuse and not react from it, she shows frustration, anger, and sadness from how she's treated, but she also doesn't let it turn her into a mean person and still shows kindness and joy in her daily life. She also tells jokes a few points in the movie. The hatred this character gets boils down to victim blaming as I see it. If you want to argue that it would make for a more compelling story that she strikes out on her own and finds a successful life that way then you can but that's just not a realistic option for the character to take unless she has already lost the security of her home and she can only make a last ditch effort to secure her happiness as what happens in Cinderella 3. Heck, after taking that option she almost ends up banished and without a home which is exactly what could have happened if she left her family in the first movie.
People also like to ignore that Cinderella came out in 1950. Obviously she is not going to fit the standards of the 21st century girlboss. She was meant to give hope, that if you stay diligent and hopeful, you will be rewarded for the hardships you endured.
She's also INCREDIBLY open-minded for a wealthy and attractive young woman in the 1920s in regard to who she'd be ok marrying(presumedly so is her dad). Yes Naveen is a Prince - literal royalty - but he's still a 'colored man', in Louisiana during the height of segregation & Jim Crow laws. Her dad is a sugar baron; that fact alone implies their ancestors would be spinning in their graves if she & Naveen did actually marry - and she's all FOR it because marrying into royalty is her dream. xD
I love Lottie so much. She's the epitome of "spoiled sweet". Yes, she was born into wealth, but that's not her fault any more than Tiana being born into poverty is _her_ fault. Her wealth has no bearing on her character. The fact that her best friend is a black woman in the 1920s deep south is indicative of her decency. The first scene of her as an adult has her throwing money at Tiana- more than she has earned over years of working two full time jobs- just to cater a single event. When Tiana's costume is ruined, she leaves her dreamboat "Naveen" behind to tend to her friend. Yes, she's a touch self-absorbed, but damn- I thought we _liked_ characters with realistic flaws these days? And even so, she makes it clear that Tiana's happiness means more to her than her shallow, childish dream. We stan Lottie in this house.
I don't understand why you chose to overlook all of Lotte's contributions in the film. I mean she was the one to give her the money to cater so that Tianna could buy her restaurant, and it was Lotte who gave Tianna the dress she needed after she got dirty and it was Lotte who was going to kiss Naveen not to marry him but to HELP her friend. She was a true pal. Having watched this video in full I have to say you're a smart guy, but your biases are on your sleeve. Which is okay if you don't ignore that and address it. Which perhaps you did at some point though it kind of got lost in the shuffle.
I honestly really like Lottie. She is a great subversion of the spoilt brat trope in that while yes, she's spoilt, she's still kind and wishes the best for Tiana. She has a big heart, but still longs for her childhood dream of becoming a princess. She even gives that up for Tiana.
Not to mention that it is implied that she has been going to the place where Tiana worked and tipping her for a while, since she wanted to help her friend but also knew that Tiana wouldn't just want her to give her the money for the place.
@@onemoreweirdo207 Exactly! I also love the implication that Lottie would've probably been happy to just buy the restaurant for Tiana, but didn't because she respects that Tiana wants to work for it. That little squeal Lottie does when Tiana confirms she can finally buy her restaurant was so wholesome.
Thank you. Lottie is a great subversion of the spoiled brat trope. Yeah, she is spoiled and gets whatever she wants but she truly is a good friend to Tiana. And yeah, she more than likely would've given Tiana the money she needed to get the restaurant but it's clear that Tiana wants to earn it through her hard work and Lottie respected that. And I love that she was very willing to give up her childhood dream for her friend, showing that she truly cares a lot about Tiana.
Dude, thank you, EXACTLY. That was the one thing that irked me about this video. Yes, she's spoilt, but calloused? No way. Not with how she is around Tiana.
I feel like there is a little more to Lottie than what was initially said- I could guarantee that Lottie and Tiana are such good friends, that she probably would have bought the mill if she asked or tried to as a gift. The nuance here is that she didn't, bc she knows Tiana wouldn't appreciate that gesture as it would undermine her own efforts. Lottie wouldn't hesitate to do stuff for Tiana, but she stops herself short out of respect and instead does stuff like hiring her friend for events (not only bc Tiana is her friend, but bc she knows the value of Tiana's work and her talent). Ofc, I'm not saying Tiana wouldn't have appreciated it, and I'm sure Lottie has probably offered a couple times before, but Tiana's character would probably feel unfufilled if she didn't achieve her and her father's dream herself.
Lotte? Selfish? She's just a spoiled and oblivious close friend of the protagonist, Tiana. She gave Tiana money willingly for her dream restaurant, despite not having to - She did it out of the kindness of her heart. She had a celebrity crush on Naveen that became an actual crush when she danced with what she thought was Prince Naveen, and near the end of the film, Lotte had found out that her friend, Tiana, had fallen in love with the young prince too, and whilst Tiana and Naveen were frogs, she kissed Naveen in a Non-Romantic way, let alone backing off from marrying "Naveen" just to ensure her best friend lived happily. Sorry if this came off rudely or negatively. I just felt the way you worded Lotte's personality was wrong
Yeah, she's kind of a brat but is still the best friend Tiana could ever wish for, her being a spoiled rich girl sets your expectations for her to be some kind of rival or mean drama queen villian to Tiana but instead is always suportive and wants her to be happy
@@Carlos-ne3zf agreed. the way disney had such an opportunity to writeher as the sterotypical mean daddy's little princess girl but decided to make her Tianas best friend is worth mentioning
@@werehoggg and not only that, they dont just say "hey this is her best friend" they show her helping Tiana with both money and actions, worrying about Tiana and advicing her, even if the advice is from her own spoiled perspective the intention for Tiana to find happiness is still obvious in her words. You can actually believe them being friends instead of just being told they're
@@Carlos-ne3zf I agree, I actually expected her to be revealed to be an antagonist to Tiana and turn on her just because she wanted to be a princess so bad, but she's actually a great friend to her to the end. I felt she was very misrepresented in this review
I adore Lottie and I can't really understand why people dislike her, just because she is obsessed with wanting to marry a prince or because she's got all this money while Tiana doesn't. Like; ONE: Yeah that would kinda not make the movie happen. TWO: These girls grew up together, Charlotte would have to be more than a little aware of how headstrong Tiana is and how important it is for her to have earnt the restaurant with her own money THREE: Charlotte clearly does because she hires Tiana to cook for the party and then pays her all the money out of her Daddy's wallet (If anything her excitement to tell Tiana tells you it was her idea, not her Daddy's). Do you know what Tiana does? tells her it's too much but knows Charlotte, as well as Charlotte, knows her so at best puts up a token refusal before taking it. FOUR: Her dream is to marry a prince sure, but she gives up on marrying Naveen the second she realises how Tiana has come to care about him AND because her best friend now oozes mucus. These are basically the reasons I love her.
Honestly I don't think it's just a matter of her being rich or wanting to be married; it's her personality in those situations. She's tone deaf and obnoxious with her loud, dramatic out bursts. She kind of has a personality of that one kid in class who is having a loud conversation with their friends while everyone else is trying to listen to the teacher's instructions.
@@chocolizard678 maybe for me, I don't see it as obnoxious because I'm autistic and I'm sure I've acted like she has most days so this is very much one of those "your miles may vary" thing
I really like the way Facilier shows he has absolute mastery over his powers, but is still completely at the mercy of forces beyond his control that grant him his magic.
I love the review but Lottie wasn't just a spoiled brat. She graciously gave up on her "dream" of marrying a prince and tried to help Tiana and Naveen at the end. She wanted to help her friend with her dream but understood that Tiana has pride and wanted to hire her to cater her party instead of just trying to give her money. Cause I know hardworking people can feel turned off from receiving "handouts" and feel more fulfilled by earning it.
Something I like about the star is that every time someone wishes upon it, their wish initially seems granted but ends up being dismissive. Charlotte wishes for Naveen and a fake version of him appears, Tiana wishes for help and Naveen appears to propose a fake offer offer and Ray wishes to marry evangeline not realising it is a star. But in the end, the characters have what they really wanted, just not what they thought they wanted. This plays on the whole theme of "not knowing what you really want" which is then the message of dig a little deeper. Characters all think they want success, like opening a restaurant and having money, when in fact what they really want is to be with the one they love.
I mean sure Lottie was kinda selfish at times but I think she was definitely more selfless towards Tiana, which imo makes her such a great character bc while she does have her flaws, it doesn't derive from the fact that she's genuinely a good friend and is incredibly kind to Tiana, showcased countless times throughout the whole movie.
I'm sad you don't like Lottie. She's got a heart, despite her selfish outbursts, which are shown as comedic. She's also generous and truly cares for her friends, which is a positive quality. I know a Lottie irl and thanks to her giving my mom -part time odd jobs, me and mom are able to pay our bills.
You lost me on this vid when you started saying Lottie was selfish. She's spoiled and oblivious, but she's a great friend to Tiana. She's my favourite aspect of the movie because it'd have been so easy to write her as the spoiled, cruel rich girl. But she's nothing like that. She's incredibly kind and i love the friendship her and Tiana have.
This was a great video although i have 2 things to say 1: this wasn't disney's last 2d film ot was winnie the pooh 2: i felt you didn't do Lottie justice by saying she was just a brat, because besides being that she was also something more important, she was tiana's friend. i feel she is actually a subversion of the thing she is supposed to subvert, in a way; she is a subversion of the rich and entitled spoiled girl but instead of making her full on bratty she put Tiana first sacrificing her wish to be with her prince just so Tiana could be happy
Thank you! I admit I overlooked Winnie lol. I don't disagree that Lottie is a well written character and I don't think she's a bad person, it's just a subjective thing for me.
@@Treeeee2008 I have already stopped watching his videos, his blatant biases, poor reasoning, and lack of research was too much for me. However since you felt the need to respond to my comment I assume you have something more you want to say? Or were you just upset somebody pointed out the flaws of a youtuber you liked?
I was totally on board until you dissed Lottie Yes she was depicted as somewhat spoiled, but she was always a good friend to Tiana and, by the end, she even gave up on trying to get with her “Prince Charming” because she saw how much he mattered to her friend
One thing you missed is that, despite being a spoiled brat, Charlotte is a great friend. After Tiana falls into the buffet table, Charlotte takes her upstairs to get changed. This is minutes after she throws a tantrum about Naveen being late AND right after her first dance with Naveen. Instead of dismissing Tiana to woo the prince, she asks what’s wrong and helps Tiana. At the end of the movie, when Charlotte realizes that Naveen loves Tiana, instead of turning into a brat and whining about losing her prince, Charlotte cries tears of joy for her friend. Charlotte says she will kiss Naveen, “No marriage required,”. There’s even a theory that Charlotte offered Tiana the money for the restaurant (before the film jumped to their present) but Tiana refused because it wasn’t earned. Disney could have easily gone the twist villain route with Charlotte and it would have been justified given her personality, time period, and race relations back then. Yet they gave her a kind (arguably selfless) heart. Also her design was gorgeous; hyper feminine characters were and always will be my weakness.
I like this video a lot but I think you overlooked Charlotte quite a bit. Charlotte is Tiana’s foil. To show the contrast poor and rich. But even with that difference and clashing personalities they are still friends. She’s a great character that some people to show can be good people/characters they just are arrogant because of the way they were brought up. She doesn’t have any character development but a shiny factor in her character- is she cherishes her friendship with Tiana. If they ever make a series for Princess and the Frog I would love if Charlotte got some development.
also something i was thinking about, considering the time period of the movie and Charlotte. she wanted to marry a black man as well, granted the reasons was because "he's a prince" but she didn't care about his skin color (hell her father didn't care ether and he's one of- if not THE richest people in new orleans if i remember right) and interracial couples in that time were really frowned upon to put it lightly. she's a HUGE spoiled brat yea but she's a insanely good friend and person, willing to even give up her "happy ending" for her best friend.
one of the only atrocities this movie committed was having two of the most attractive main characters disney has ever created and they’re frogs for 90% of the film lol
Lottie breaks the evil jealous second female love interest trope and is a real friend to Tiana. Just because Lottie comes from a rich family doesn't mean Tiana is entitled to her wealth. Tiana is a stoic proud working woman and Lottie and her father show support by going to the diner that she works at. And is clearly not the usual clientele of that diner but they don't look down at Tiana about it. Plus, it's Lottie who buys the benette? donut things that allows Tiana to buy the building in the first place. She didn't make Tiana beg for money and play the 'savior' role. It was respectful. Lottie never made fun of Tiana's dream unlike most of the other side characters in the beginning of the movie telling her to go out and have fun wasting their money. When Tiana's dress got ruined, Lottie put her in a dress and tiara, even though she was trying to nab the prince. She thought of Tiana as a princess too on an equal level at her. Then at the end of the movie, she didn't try to steal Naven or get jealous, she was happy for her friend's love because she's a romantic at heart. Plus, Lottie is necessary to the story. Dr. Facilier is a dark mirror of Tiana. He's jealous of other's people's wealth and fame. He feels like people don't see him because of it. This makes him consumed with greed and envy so that he does evil things. While Tiana is literally the best friends with the richest girl in town. And doesn't greedily envy her friend's inherited wealth only working on making her own. Dr. Facilier is what Tiana could be if she wanted to take the easy way. It would probably be easy to trick Lottie into 'helping' make her dream come true faster because Lottie is a sheltered romantic. But there is a line neither crosses as they support each other's dreams. Also, Lottie is the yin to Tiana's yang. Tiana is stoic and realistic. Lottie is bubbly and idealistic. And they balance each other out. I'm sure Lottie was very supportive about following dreams because she was a romantic. She might have been very important emotional friend that was young at heart enough to not believe in following the status quo. And Tiana is probably that grounded reliable friend that Lottie goes to for real advice. Because Lottie is so rich, other girls are probably envious and do one of two thing. Nice up front and talk shit behind her back or are obvious about not liking Lottie. Tiana is probably her only true friend. And it probably works because they have two very different dreams and personalities. Lottie one of the few female friends that isn't two faces, she's just eccentric. It's wrong to hate her just because she's rich.
@@colonelh1875 in Spanish, it’s “facil”, pronounced “fA-seel”. I figured that Facilier’s name had a similar meaning given my knowledge of romance languages but I couldn’t be certain because I do not know French. Thanks for this comment!
So, lottie was kind to tiana the entire movie, always treated her as a friend and equal, never once looking down on or demeaning her, even visiting tiana at the diner she works at, AND gave up her chance of marrying her prince charming to help tiana, All while serving the important narrative purpose of being tiana's opposite. And you don't like her, purely because she has money, which let her grow up to be a care free dreamer. Wow, That is a horribly closeminded and biased view.
i agree, even as a kid i felt lottie was a kind hearted twist to the generic rich girl bully stereotype. she was blonde wealthy and pretty airheaded but she had a big heart, so instead of being an antagonist while foiling tianas character they had a friendship and bonded despite their differences which gave a very unique dynamic imo. i think even now her kind of character is underrated because it takes traits that media usually shows to be corruptive and shows that one can still be a good person despite the privileges they were born into. characters like lottie are a great example for wealthier kids and i wish there were more like her.
I agree with you! Lottie is one of my favorite secondary characters of all time, the fact that she always treated her as a true friend, never was rude or condescending says alot about her, yeah she was spoiled as a child and also well into adulthood, but despite that, she was happy to see Tiana with Naveen in the end, feeling nothing but joy for her friend and showing her support always. Lottie needs more love and I will die on this hill.
Cmon, Lottie may be spoiled but she genuinely loves Tiana and never put the prince above her. I think what went wrong with this film is exactly that Disney tried to parody themselves. In order to watch it, as amazingly written as it is, you must be familiar with all the tropes they used in the previous princess films to get that they are subverted. Also, sadly, people are suckers for repetition; they will prefer the tired princess fairytale formula over a story that makes them think from the get go. Keep in mind that Tangled was the next film and did great: classic princess film, misaimed marketing to make it look like a cool slapstick action flick a la despicable me, of course it was in CGi because all the successful films of that time were in CGI. And it began. It went to the point that even recent 2D films like Klaus wouldn't be as successful if they didn't look like CG... Shame, really.
I think that there's something to be said about the Doc's death being about his 'debts'. Just another echo of the themes of poverty/money hunger driving people into desperate situations.
My interpretation of Evangeline was that she was Ray’s wife/girlfriend/lady love that died. He holding on to that love looked up at the sky and saw her in the heavens, so when ray eventually dies he finally rejoins her in the sky (and that’s exactly what happens)
We're really ignoring one of the worst parts of this whole thing. Disney had 49 2d animated films. They didn't even get to an even 50. Absolutely unacceptable.
Snow White had more than 7 lines. But I will tell you which princess has the least amount of lines in her own movie. Aurora. The Sleeping Beauty has only 18 lines in her own movie
20:55 This is shown much earlier in his introduction. Without speech. He's conning a guy for a nickel that he pockets. But when he sees the Mayor and his daughter driving by, his shadow flips the nickel into his hand and he scorns at them. Without words showing he's manipulative, poor, is jealous of their spoiled riches and that he has actual magic and not just a con artist. All without dialogue or the speech you showed here.
I'd gotten the Mom's line on my early viewings, but the line at the end of Friends on the Other Side ("You got what you wanted, but you lost what you had.") passed under the radar for ages.
I thought you might like to know that my sister was working at a movie theater when this movie came out and she said that younger kids were literally coming out of the theater rooms crying because "Friends On The Other Side" scared them so much. They eventually put up a sign at the front saying the movie might be too scary for young kids and they weren't going to be giving any refunds if the kids got too scared and left before the movie was over. Truly the best villain.
You completly shunned Lottie its almost like you ignore all the good she has and only focus on her bad traits. SHE was the one who cleaned Tiana up and have her a blue dress despite only wearing PINK, therby implying she bought that dress for T. SHE didn’t kiss frog Naveen to marry him or something, she TRYED to break the spell for T because SHE was the carnival princess. She might be spoiled but she would do ANYTHING for T. Oh, also she made it possible for T to buy the old mill. She could’ve given her the money from the start, but we can see that Tiana wants to earn money herself and doesn’t want pity, she would’ve refused Lotties money. That’s why Lottie took her as a caterer and gave her the rest of the money that she needed. + now that you mentioned segregation, did you notice how Lottie and her father came to Tianas workplace? A caffee which is 90% filled with balck customers, probably in the black part of the city and yet they came there. By all accounts Lottie and her dad are remarkable, but I think they’re only able to be like this because they are the richest family in New Orleans. Nevertheless, they were always kind towards Tiana and her mom, they could’ve easily been the villians of this story.
Exactly! Also look at the fact that Lottie's dad hires Eudora to make Lottie's dresses. He could have hired anyone but he hired Eudora because he genuinely cared for her and her family by contributing towards their income. I'm guessing also since it's presumed that Lottie's mum is deceased that Eudora became a mother figure towards her and after Tiana's father was killed in the war, Big Daddy La Bouff became a father figure to Tiana and looked out for her. That's why I loved Lottie and her dad.
I get the impression that Tiana still lives in her mom’s home, in the movie we transition young Tiana running out of her room screaming, then she comes into the same room as a young woman. Plus, her still living with her mom means ALL of what money she can get is saved to purchase the mill I am going to point out a couple issues with what you said about Lottie. Yes she is spoiled, but seems more oblivious. SHE is the one that wants Tiana to cater the party, while yes she’s using her Daddy’s money but he doesn’t deserve the credit for hiring Tiana. While she is spoiled and at times oblivious to others struggles, she doesn’t impose her wants on others nor let her wants supersede someone else’s needs (putting off courting to give Tiana a new costume, giving up her Princess dream to get Tiana back to human) Also, Tiana’s mom is a seamstress as her job. Mr LeBouf is her best customer as he is always commissioning new dresses for Lottie. In deleted scenes on the dvd we see her mom using Tiana as essentially a mannequin, making a dress for Lottie while Tiana is making the beignets for the party. The mom is getting older and her hands sore easily, Tiana saying her mom can retire when her restaurant takes off. The mom saying she won’t retire until she does one last job, Tiana’s wedding dress and three sets of baby clothes.
it's even better than naveen using the rich peoples money at the end, it's actually all Tiana's savings in conjunction with the pair using Louis to threaten the sellers therefore using something they gained during the film without having to use the money all the characters were so determined to gain the whole time
@@GDJDCO I know, which is an absolute travesty. Treasure Planet is such an amazing movie (and my personal favorite from Disney’s animated films), improving on its source material in so many ways. Disney sent it out to die to herald in their transition to 3D animation, and it now sits for the most part in obscurity due to that. It’s an underrated masterpiece imho, so it’s just sad to hear it overlooked so often.
I like Lottie she's shown to be a good friend to Tiana and despite being spoiled at the end of the day she'd throw it all away for her friend. She doesn't care that they come from different backgrounds and while she doesn't fully understand Tiana's struggles her and her father are more than willing to use their money to help people like Tiana. If it wasn't for her families generosity its unlikely Tiana would have been able to accomplish her dream given the time period. While she didn't get the prince that she wanted she still had what she needed, she had love and wanted to see her friend happy.
Let’s also talk about the subtlety into Facilier’s description of his prediction for Naveen. Says Naveen “wants to be free and HOP from place to place”, “freedom takes green” and that Naveen needs the “green that I seen”. I wholeheartedly agree that the build-up to the transformation is beyond perfect:
Sorry this took such a long time to get out. I had to re edit it several times to get it past copyright restrictions and I had a blackout that lasted nearly a week so that certainly slowed production lol. Next video will be about AI villains and is my favorite video Ive ever made.
@@Treeeee2008 well one of the biggest difference is the cultural and religion aspects. VooDoo is a variant of African tribal religion combined with Catholic Christian saints. Witchcraft and sorcery comes from pre-christian European pagan traditional beliefs. While both are derived from pre-christian traditional cultural practice, the cultures were significantly different. Voodoo magic would involve the ancestors powders poppet dolls with pins. Voodoo originated from West and South Africa. It came from Haiti as well. Ceremonial dances is the tradition of it. Witchcraft on the other hand would involve spell recitations incantation chants invocations evocation spells supernatural harnessed power elements of the pentagram which protects wicca/Witchcraft practitioners from dark evil entities henceforth. "Voodoo, or more specifically Voudoun is a specific religion found in Haiti and in the southern US, made from a mix of the religions of various African diaspora peoples syncretized with folk Catholicism. In the religion, people perform rituals and give offering to spiritual beings called the Loa,or specific ancestral spirits and “gods” from Africa, and develop relationships with them , often via semi voluntary spirit possession practices People who practice Voudoun do often practice magic, some of which may be sorted as “witchcraft” However there is a great deal more to Voudoun than just the magical practices which sometimes go along with the religion, which get popularized and butchered by ignorant media representations to the public, and taken as “Voodoo” Saying Voudoun is somehow intrinsically about witchcraft, is like saying Catholicism is a wine tasters club where crackers are served. I’ve avoided rewatching it because I don’t want the negative connotations of “the death of 2-D” to marr my memory of when I first watched it with my brother. A final celebration of 2-D animation with dynamic, relatable characters is a much better way of looking at it! Time to put it on for family movie night. Thank you!
It's unfair for you to imply people didn't watch Princess and The Frog because it's 2D and instead chose to watch Toy Story 3, Shrek Forever After and Despicable Me because they're 3D when in reality people chose those films because 2/3 of them are sequels to already well established franchises that have been around for years. If you're a big fan of Toy Story, and you 're in a situation where you can can only see one or two movies a year, you're going to pick Toy Story 3 over anything else. It's also important to take into consideration the film itself. Princess and the Frog is a Princess movie, which has a narrower appeal. Young boys (as an example, not as a rule) are often less interested in these kind of movies, where something like Toy Story or Shrek are usually seen as more unisex family films and thus will have a larger audience of people interested in viewing them. And that's not even getting into the sad fact that many people actively chose not to watch Princess and the Frog because it had a black female lead character, as well as early development issues with the film that also made it less appealing to black viewers, further shrinking the amount of people who will view it. Princess and the Frog was a great film and holds a special place in my heart as it was in theaters when I had first entered college for animation, with my classmates and I all going to watch it and using it as inspiration for many of our class projects; and while you are correct that consumers made it clear that they want 3D films, to say "people didn't watch it because people just like 3D better" and ignore all the other important factors around the film's development and release that would attribute to being less popular over all just isn't looking at the whole picture.
Tina's mother I'm pretty sure is supposed to be a seamstress working for Lottie and making her dresses. I'm pretty sure we actually see some mannequins etc set up in the scene with Lottie and Tina as kids, and in the scene where Tiana and her father make gumbo we can see a sewing machine
And it is explicitly stated that she made the dress young Lottie is wearing in that scene, and her father asks Tiana's mom to make Lottie another dress in that same scene.
@@brookejon3695 Thanks, it's just been a good while since I actually watched the movie but that was the one thing I definitively remembered. In either case, not a housekeeper/nanny. Just a seamstress who also happens to be good with Lottie on account of having a daughter the same age.
Oh my goodness! THANK YOU! I came here specifically to say that. Lottie's dad would hire her to make dresses for Lottie, and- judging by how spoiled she is portrayed to be- he would hire Tiana's mom a lot to make many princess dresses for her because that's what Lottie wanted.
Quick note: Snow White was the first American-made animated feature film made in technicolor. There are older animated features dating back to the silent era. The oldest surviving one is one Adventures of Prince Achmed back in 1927, which is a whole decade earlier than Snow White.
Disney (or, more specifically, Disney animator Eric Goldberg) announced that they are going to be putting efforts into bringing some new 2D animated projects to the big screen and even dedicating resources to training a new generation of traditional Disney animators!
It’s a real shame because I’ll never look at a 3D film with the same level of amazement that I look at old 2D film. One of my favorites is Sleeping Beauty every background of the entire film was painted by hand. Someone had to go in with the tiniest paint bushes and paint every little leave all the little details in the trees all the shadows all the light ray. It’s not like 3D where they can just copy and paste a tree asset move it somewhere else to make a forest. In Sleeping Beauty they drew each one individually by hand. Also in 3D films when making crowds they just take the same models place them in five different spots then take that asset and change their colors and do the same thing. Meanwhile look at the opening of Sleeping Beauty in a crowd full of people no two are identical and they all move different. They had to go in frame by frame and draw different people doing different gestures one frame at a time. As someone who loves drawing and painting I will never look at a 3D film with the same amount of amazement I look at a 2D film. I think that’s also why some 2D films from say 50 years ago still hold up because it will never stop being impressive what humans were capable of making with just pencils paper and lots of paint. While an animated movie from like 20 years ago probably aged badly as the technology has improved and all studios want the movies to look more and more realistic.
The only reason 3D was so popular is because it was innovative for the time, CGI was previously used as a cost-cutting measure that could be lazily put in the background where most audiences wouldn't see them, but then movies like Toy story and Shrek make it the main focus and revolutionize animation forever. But it shouldn't be as successful anymore because it's all companies do now, CGI was amazing in the 90s and early 2000s, but now it's the most commonly used method of animation and people shouldn't have a bias towards 2D movies anymore.
28:27 Actually Hercules sacrefices his god life to be with Meg. You see Olympian gods in this film have this shiny radiant coulours and that is sign of their immortality. When Hercules kisses Megara he lost these colours. Yeah it is yet another inconsistency with Greek myths in which gods could have mortal lovers with whom they had kids
Lottie is the dreamer who never go after her dream, but instead wait for it to just ome true. Tiana on the other hand is a dreamer as well, but rhe type whom chases after her dream and consistently works towards it.
Won't stand for this Lilo and Stitch slander - I love Princess and the Frog but L&S were quicker to do the struggling down-top-earth dynamic. Also I absolutely love Lottie! The beauty of her character is that she's naive, not evil. Yeah she's a little detached from reality but she has a heart of gold - she basically helped Tiana achieve her dreams and never got angry at Tiana for her relationship with Naveen. I don't really understand why you don't like her but hey you do you.
To the prince's credit, he did play a musical instrument, so he does technically know how to do something useful and could probably make some living off it
The Princess and the Frog is a family movie in the truest sense, because it entertains both young and old. The message of the movie is as humble as it is subtle: Money corrupts, but it's up to you whether you let it. As you explained, you have every archetype related to wealth and poverty present in this film, and for the most part they all play a role, and it's easy to find someone you relate to, ironically enough. It's got depth too, and isn't JUST a parody of the genre like Megamind (also a pretty good movie imo). This movie always stuck out to me as an American, a historian, and a man of faith. The only princess movie I actually would want to watch again (I was close friends with a Disney girl in elementary school). The prince's monolog about "not knowing how to do anything" especially got my attention. I would be considered "upper class" in that my family's income could be considered top 10%, although I have siblings. No farraris or pools. I struggle to get those kinds of words out too, because I risk spending ignorant or boastful, because now I do live alone, finishing up school in a scary world. My parents raised me well, but they weren't going to make me struggle to teach me lessons. Some got a big headstart, and it's best to know how and work hard. The prince got it in the, but his servant didn't.
So far great video but I highly have to disagree with your take on Charlotte. Yes she is a spoiled rich kid... BUT she also is a great friend. She puts Tiana always over her own wishes and priorities. Not to mention her bubbly personality is just sch a joy to watch.
@sewer~rat That is why Lottie is there. That's why Tiana was "invited " to the party to work and not as an actual guest because in this early 1900s time period a rich White family from the south would not have invited their poor Black employees to a function. No matter how nice Lottie's family is, society wouldn't have allowed it. But it was cute to think that Tiana would have been invited otherwise but that's why the story was written that way. The 2 Brothers who own the building Tiana wants to buy a clearly bigots but Lottie and her dad are the 2 nicest people in town. Eve nicer than the other Black people.
The rest of the video was good... But ya can't bash on babygirl lottie and expect a ton of agreement on that. I understand what you're seeing, but cmon... She's definitely a sweetie and definitely has a big ol heart, one of gold at that(ha)
Just a heads up but the medal seen hanging on the frame with Tiana's fathers service photo, it is a US Army Distinguished Service Cross, which is the second highest distinction medal a soldier can be awarded just under the medal of honor. (At least through the US Army and not counting other branches)
I am sill bummed that it failed financially. I hate movie theater. It is dark and cold. Yet, I still hauled my ass and spend some hard-earned cash to see it in theater because the poster sparkled a certain joy and wonder in me.
The last thing I heard Eric Goldberg who's one of the last few Disney 2D Animation veterans is teaching young animators to learn hand drawn animation. He then confirmed they're already working on upcoming short films, including 2 feature films where Goldberg wants to make 2D animation look as beautiful as Klaus and Spiderverse
i feel like the way i see 2d vs 3d is like 3d will always age you look back on old 3d movies and you start to see how old it is but 2d has a timelessness to it because drawings never really age
Recently watched the aristocats again, gotta say I agree. 3D will be an ever changing medium as technology progresses. The only bottleneck in 2D animation is ability. The problem with pushing polygons is that we get hollow flicks with the sole purpose of giving us jaw dropping visuals. What ever happened to making a good movie lol
If you think that villain has creative use of magic, you gotta check out the goddess of chaos from Sinbad. Like who even comes up with shapeshifting via summoning a fleshy husk and possessing it?
selfish and callous???? the whole point of lotte's character is that she is a good and supportive friend to tiana--yes she has her moments of immaturity but she's overall kindhearted. that's why it doesn't upset her when she realizes that tiana wants to be with the prince and why it does hurt her when she thinks she was too late to break the spell for them
I've seen both Road to El Dorado and Princess and the Frog more times than I can count and I had NO idea that cortez and ray were both voiced by Jim Cummings 😭
Something I don't see mentioned is the foiling that goes on in this movie. Lotte is all but a princess. She is spoiled to the point that she doesn't understand the struggles of those less privileged first-hand. She does live on a much closer societal level however so she does express signs of empathy. She seems to be oblivious of the differences between them which can be very insensitive but also see them on a much more level footing as human beings. She considers Tianna her best friend and while she can be selfish she does show Tianna support that she doesn't have to/wouldn't if she were fully selfish. Also for the time period and situations she is very progressive in her relationships. She is very assertive and proactive to reach her goal to marry a prince. Due to this she can be annoying but also is the one directing her father to help her achieve this through his resources. Navine is her counterpart. He is a real prince and is so spoiled he doesn't want to do anything but hedinistically live in the moment. His parents want the future for him that Lotte desires for herself but he wants to avoid it at all costs. Due to this he is cut off and learns to sympathize with feeling helpless but is driven ot get what he had back without compromise. He plans to marry into wealth simply to abandon his responsibilities for it and live loose again. He is very much like Dr. Facilier in his goals at this point. He clearly sees everyone around him as a toy or tool to be used by him and this is most clear in Lawrence. Lawrence is his one companion and the foil to Tianna. He has been around Navine his whole life and played a hired help role like Tianna to Lotte, but navine treats him like trash and sees him as just "the help." Unlike Tianna, this hardship gets enough to Lawrence for him to seek vengeance through an easy way out. Both of them don't belive in magic at first but wind up embracing it. Lotte wishes on the evening star and ultimately convinces Tianna to give it a try too. She also unwittingly sets up Tianna to become a frog through her act of kindness. She takes Tianna to her room to clean up from the accident and let's her have one of her princess dresses to wear. Lawrence at first feels the Shadow Man is a scam but Navine essentially orders him to go into the parlor both putting them in postion for Facilier's magic and keeping Lawrence in enough of an irritated state to accept the offer of vengeance. Lawrence becomes the villains assistant and remains a secondary character while Tianna embraces the wishing star in what she believes is its offering through the frog prince. While Tianna and Navine set off on their adventure a parallel B plot occurs with Lotte and a disguised Lawernce. Navine and Tianna quickly get past the liar revealed thing and genuinely bond through their quest. Lotte and Lawrence however interact in a way that is still built on lies and shallow motives until until the two couples again cross paths. The splitting of the two couples is set in motion by Docter Faciler who actively sought out his stooges, guides lawarnce to seek out what he wants for his own perosnal benefit and again is what lead to Tianna/Navine in going off on their quest. Mama Odie passively waits for them to arrive, selflessly attempts to teach them the lesson about prioritizing what they need over what they want and sets them on the path to rendevue with the other couple. Navine and Tianna both decide to stay together no matter what sacrifices that would mean to them individually. In the opposite, Lawrence breaks down as a coward when the truth is revealed and Lotte turns on him, attempting to help her best friend without any quid pro quo, despite Navines own selfless offer to make her dream still come true. She fails to help but the two still accept their fate as long as they can be together while Lawrence is clearly not in a good place and lotte still wants a Prince, she is just less horse blinded toward it. There are also a lot of little details i wont go into that help indicate this unique counterpart situation in the movie as well. It is very interesting to me since it clearly shows the kind of careful structure they made in telling the story. Since this does subvert a lot of roles it is interesting how they did this duality plot planning to support and emphasize it. Both plots have related characters paired in a rags and riches meeting together style but do to the very different personalities and circumstances they are in, they wind up VERY contrasting by comparison. Dr. Faciler mentions being royalty on his mothers side. This is a refrence to his mother being a New Orleans Vudu Queen and the scrapped plot point that Mama Odie was actually her. I like that they removed this since it would only complicate the counterpart relationship of rhe two. The fact they are aware of each other but never do much to interact or show any investment in each other' existance keeps the focus where it needs to be. If they were parent and child, it would imply more about the motives to thier roles in the story and distract from the frogs story. It is similar in how they had this whole B plot with Lawrence and Lotte as a subtle bizzaro reflection of what was going on with the main characters but kept the focus mostly on them. All this supporting detail kept as just that to the main story makes it feel much fuller upon deeper thought without breaking focus on what is most important in the movie.
DANG THAT WAS A READ, but it’s true. And it’s interesting to see how different and similar the characters are even when they had similar/different upbringings.
It's interesting how Tiana and Facilier both come from poverty and a whole society that discriminates against them, but it has shaped them into such different people.
Honestly it's just nice to see someone in the art criticism talk positively about a movie I hear so much negativity overall.. This is refreshing. Subscribed!
I really want a sequel where it’s just about family affection and connections. Maybe after the Tiana show or is an arc in the show. Tiana and Naveen are married and running their restaurant, everything’s perfect, and it’s happily ever after… for Tiana. Naveen sees how close she is to her mom and how much they loved her dad, then starts to miss his parents and gets a bit homesick. Tiana sees this and wants to support him. So they either save up for the trip or Lotte begs her dad to pay for it. And Lotte would probably ask to join them. They meet his parents but they’re not happy to see him at all, and it doesn’t help that he’s not married to someone who’s wealthy. Naveen tries to bond with them but they think he’s just there to sneak his way into leeching off them, so they reprimand him for being an expensive spoiled brat. Naveen is distraught but Tiana realizes that they failed him in how they raised him and confronts them about it. Stubborn spoiled rich step parents being stubborn spoiled rich step parents, kick them out after landing one last “you’re a disgrace and a waste of money” Lotte, witnessing all this starts to rethink her whole life and gets a reality check, Tiana comforts Naveen, and Naveen sees that he doesn’t need the approval of his parents who where barely there for him and realizes Tiana is more than enough.

@@4shame Technically, Winnie the Pooh was the last 2-D Disney film, coming out in 2011.
Milne's.
Lotte was such a good friend especially during the time it took place when racism was common.
No fr she was a real one, always so kind to everyone around her even in an era where she wasn't expected to be
@@Friday1207 it probably helps that Lottie grew up with Tiana, so she probably doesn’t see things like racism or classism. To her Tiana is just Tiana.
Yeah there's a reason why Lottie is my fav char in the movie, for the reasons you mentioned.
I will not stand for this Lottie slander. She was spoiled SWEET not spoiled RICH. She loved Tiana with every inch of her soul and would have done anything for her to be happy. And to each their own but I always read in the movie that Tiana’s mother was not a Maid or Nanny for the girls but a seamstress Lottie’s dad was paying heavily to make Lottie all her princess dresses, but also just to help Tiana’s mom and Charlotte’s current and permanent best friend.
she was a good character, but let's not lie to ourselves- she was spoiled rich
@@craigime She was both, Spoiled rich and very sweet, always being a true friend to tiana and treating her as an equal.
@@craigime she was only spoiled. Spoiled rich has negative implication, while spoiled sweet has positive implications, Lottie has both
Lotte was spoiled but she wasn't selfish. She helps out tianna multiple times. Over paying her in the beginning, giving support to her and a dress at the party when she was down and another at the end.
Also note that pink wouldn't have been considered feminine in the 20's so Tiana's dress would've been more feminine.
Honestly, I think you give Lottie way too little credit. Sure she's a spoiled brat, and throws a tantrum about not being able to marry a prince, but as soon as she realizes that *Tiana* is also upset, she drops everything to comfort her.
She is a really good friend, might not be a very good person, but she still understand empathy and care deeply about those who are close to her
Plus she's not racist.
I agree. Lottie deserves more love than he gave her.

Lottie isn't selfish. I loved her, she's just incredibly oblivious but has a good heart.
Her dad is a sugar baron; that fact alone implies their ancestors would be spinning in their graves if she & Naveen did actually marry - and she's all FOR it because marrying into royalty is her dream. xD
I was looking for such a comment! Thanks you for pointing that out.
@@zodiachimera7557 She also gave up her life long dream because she realized that her friend wouldn't be happy!
@@sacrilegioussasquatch And that just- 'chef kiss'. She is SUCH a good friend & person, even if she is spoiled and oblivious.
Agreed :(
I honestly really like Lottie.
I'm gonna stand up for Lottie here. She's spoiled, sure... but not rotten.
EXACTLYYT

@@Carlos-ne3zf I agree, I actually expected her to be revealed to be an antagonist to Tiana and turn on her just because she wanted to be a princess so bad, but she's actually a great friend to her to the end. I felt she was very misrepresented in this review
i think he just has a prejudice against her because she was born rich.
I adore Lottie and I can't really understand why people dislike her, just because she is obsessed with wanting to marry a prince or because she's got all this money while Tiana doesn't. Like;
ONE: Yeah that would kinda not make the movie happen.
TWO: These girls grew up together, Charlotte would have to be more than a little aware of how headstrong Tiana is and how important it is for her to have earnt the restaurant with her own money
THREE: Charlotte clearly does because she hires Tiana to cook for the party and then pays her all the money out of her Daddy's wallet (If anything her excitement to tell Tiana tells you it was her idea, not her Daddy's).
I’m pretty sure Lottie and her father had offered to give her money many times in the past and she turned them down.
I head canon that she had bought Tiana's iconic blue dress for Tiana to begin with. Throughout the whole movie she only ever wears pink.
She's one of the reasons selfish people can be great if done the right way.
"Disney gave us 3D animation because we asked for it."
To quote the shadow man's song "You got what you wanted, but you lost what you had."
Cogent observation.
Same, she never once treated tiana as anything other then a friend and equal.
Lottie hate is a big L
This was a great video although i have 2 things to say
1: this wasn't disney's last 2d film ot was winnie the pooh
2: i felt you didn't do Lottie justice by saying she was just a brat, because besides being that she was also something more important, she was tiana's friend. i feel she is actually a subversion of the thing she is supposed to subvert, in a way; she is a subversion of the rich and entitled spoiled girl but instead of making her full on bratty she put Tiana first sacrificing her wish to be with her prince just so Tiana could be happy
Thank you! I admit I overlooked Winnie lol. I don't disagree that Lottie is a well written character and I don't think she's a bad person, it's just a subjective thing for me.
Dude, Charlotte literally gave up her dream for Tianna. Shes great
She’s an og friend.
I agree, if anything she was completely supportive of her dreams!
Good friends stick with you through the good times. True friends stick with you even in the bad ones, Lottie always had tiana's back.
Lottie may be spoiled but she is incredibly kind to her friend. You glanced over every part were lottie was kind to Tianna....
having watched his videos, he does that a lot.
@@slayazes3925 if you hate him so much then you can just easily click off and find someone who doesn't do that
@@Treeeee2008 I have already stopped watching his videos, his blatant biases, poor reasoning, and lack of research was too much for me. However since you felt the need to respond to my comment I assume you have something more you want to say? Or were you just upset somebody pointed out the flaws of a youtuber you liked?
I was totally on board until you dissed Lottie
Yes she was depicted as somewhat spoiled, but she was always a good friend to Tiana and, by the end, she even gave up on trying to get with her “Prince Charming” because she saw how much he mattered to her friend
It made her a real human, often blinded by circumstance!
Exactly! When it came down to it, she truly cared for Tiana and wanted her to be happy
Was a crime of the highest level.
Big neon sign on this please. I liked a lot of his analysis, but his read on Lottie made me quite peeved.
YES! AGREED!
Facilier's name also reflects his "easy way" fate. Facile being French for easy.
@@colonelh1875 in Spanish, it’s “facil”, pronounced “fA-seel”. I figured that Facilier’s name had a similar meaning given my knowledge of romance languages but I couldn’t be certain because I do not know French. Thanks for this comment!
Very well said! I was shocked that he hated her just because she was born rich.
It still feels surreal how Disney ditched 2D animated movies and essentially never looked back
Yeah, they really should go back to 2d. I honestly hope in the future they do.
I've seen this movie two dozen times and I never once realized that she named her restraunt "Tiana's palace" I always read it as "place"
ME TOO
We're really ignoring one of the worst parts of this whole thing.
Honestly, Keith David's performance and the animation of Facilier carries the entire film on its back. He steals every scene he is in.
Spittin straight facts
I get the impression that Tiana still lives in her mom’s home, in the movie we transition young Tiana running out of her room screaming, then she comes into the same room as a young woman. Plus, her still living with her mom means ALL of what money she can get is saved to purchase the mill
I am going to point out a couple issues with what you said about Lottie. Yes she is spoiled, but seems more oblivious. SHE is the one that wants Tiana to cater the party, while yes she’s using her Daddy’s money but he doesn’t deserve the credit for hiring Tiana. While she is spoiled and at times oblivious to others struggles, she doesn’t impose her wants on others nor let her wants supersede someone else’s needs (putting off courting to give Tiana a new costume, giving up her Princess dream to get Tiana back to human)
Also, Tiana’s mom is a seamstress as her job.
One of the most overlooked Disney movie.
Also Keith David is always a win.
it's even better than naveen using the rich peoples money at the end, it's actually all Tiana's savings in conjunction with the pair using Louis to threaten the sellers therefore using something they gained during the film without having to use the money all the characters were so determined to gain the whole time
“Directors of the Little Mermaid, Hercules, and Aladdin” ….. and completely sidesteps mentioning their best film and passion project Treasure Planet…
Not many know about treasure planet despite the fact that it was a financial failure
True!!

29:13 the fuck you mean a commoner, he's royalty too from her mother side, didn't you see the tiny crown on the shrinked head?
Let’s also talk about the subtlety into Facilier’s description of his prediction for Naveen. Says Naveen “wants to be free and HOP from place to place”, “freedom takes green” and that Naveen needs the “green that I seen”. I wholeheartedly agree that the build-up to the transformation is beyond perfect:
I think The Princess and The Frog would have done financially better if it didn't come out the same week as Avatar…
p.s. love your video
Thank you! I’d have to agree, Avatar sort of siphoned all the funds for the season lol
Dr. Facilier absolutely deserves to be a villain in a Kingdom hearts game.
Sorry this took such a long time to get out. I had to re edit it several times to get it past copyright restrictions and I had a blackout that lasted nearly a week so that certainly slowed production lol. Next video will be about AI villains and is my favorite video Ive ever made.
9:45 it's not sorcery it's voodoo. there is a significant difference
Doesn't elaborate
Sometimes to call some of the gods/goddesses for assistance with spells.
"Voodoo, or more specifically Voudoun is a specific religion found in Haiti and in the southern US, made from a mix of the religions of various African diaspora peoples syncretized with folk Catholicism. In the religion, people perform rituals and give offering to spiritual beings called the Loa,or specific ancestral spirits and “gods” from Africa, and develop relationships with them , often via semi voluntary spirit possession practices
People who practice Voudoun do often practice magic, some of which may be sorted as “witchcraft”
However there is a great deal more to Voudoun than just the magical practices which sometimes go along with the religion, which get popularized and butchered by ignorant media representations to the public, and taken as “Voodoo”
Saying Voudoun is somehow intrinsically about witchcraft, is like saying Catholicism is a wine tasters club where crackers are served.
You would be missing most of the point
For an excellent short overview of traditional Voudoun, i highly recommend the documentary Divine Horsemen, which is a classic documentary about the practices involved with Voudoun spirit possession, and the religion in general"

Its refreshing to hear a positive review. Every time I’ve heard anyone even mention the Princes and the Frog, its always been with either bitterness or disappointment.
Screw toy story I loved the princess frog
27:15 hearing a grown man say "that's adorable" in the most monotone voice was so funny to me for some reason
A warlock, rather than a regular mage, hes made a deal, and been given power at a price
For me the biggest flaw of Facilier is that he has criminally little screen time
Tina's mother I'm pretty sure is supposed to be a seamstress working for Lottie and making her dresses.
Computer animation just doesn' have the wow factor is used to for me.
But Lottie offered money for Tiana's restaurant, how could you forget?
Now you mentioned it, how is she still hateable?!
To the prince's credit, he did play a musical instrument, so he does technically know how to do something useful and could probably make some living off it
If you look up "List of Walt Disney Animation Studios Films" on wikipedia, you'll see that Winnie the Pooh (2011) is the actual 'last 2D Disney film'.
It didn't go to the big screen so doesn't really count.
That's weird, because I saw it in theaters.
Facilier is my favorite Disney villain of all time, I hope they make more classics like him some day.
Naveen is far and beyond the most sexually charged Disney prince. I have no idea how the writers got away with it, but that boy fucks.
Jesus loves you

So far great video but I highly have to disagree with your take on Charlotte. Yes she is a spoiled rich kid... BUT she also is a great friend. She puts Tiana always over her own wishes and priorities. Not to mention her bubbly personality is just sch a joy to watch.
I'm sad this movie didn't do so well. It was my favorite when I was a kid.
You really hate Lottie, huh? Not even gonna mention how much of a good friend she is to Tiana, huh? Even if she is spoiled, she's a good person
Thissss
@sewer~rat I mean, it IS disney, but I'm glad she was at least given more of a unique personality
Let's just hope Disney forgot about this movie so we don't get a live action remake that would butcher everything
With Disney's track record, I kinda don't want the show either. I don't want them to ruin one of my favorite movies from my childhood
Couldn't finish this video for that absolute VIOLATION against Lottie
Same
I am sill bummed that it failed financially. I hate movie theater. It is dark and cold. Yet, I still hauled my ass and spend some hard-earned cash to see it in theater because the poster sparkled a certain joy and wonder in me.
I swore it made a decent chunk of change? Didnt they at least gather back their budget?
The last thing I heard Eric Goldberg who's one of the last few Disney 2D Animation veterans is teaching young animators to learn hand drawn animation. He then confirmed they're already working on upcoming short films, including 2 feature films where Goldberg wants to make 2D animation look as beautiful as Klaus and Spiderverse
Oh GOOOD!!! I feared we weren’t going to get any in the near future.
Welp, time to listen to "Friends on the Other Side" again.
i feel like the way i see 2d vs 3d is like 3d will always age you look back on old 3d movies and you start to see how old it is but 2d has a timelessness to it because drawings never really age
I would disagree, 3D is still a developing art form. 2D had a century to mature compared to the couple decades that 3D has progressed in.
Keith David’s voice acting as Dr. Facilier is great! Also, Oprah Winfrey’s warm voice fits beautifully for Tiana’s mom.
Death must be death
Bro Dr Faciler was a really cool character. His shadow and him are such a duo.
If you think that villain has creative use of magic, you gotta check out the goddess of chaos from Sinbad. Like who even comes up with shapeshifting via summoning a fleshy husk and possessing it?
selfish and callous???? the whole point of lotte's character is that she is a good and supportive friend to tiana--yes she has her moments of immaturity but she's overall kindhearted. that's why it doesn't upset her when she realizes that tiana wants to be with the prince and why it does hurt her when she thinks she was too late to break the spell for them
Wait wait wait, you are telling me that Keith David, the voice of the Legendary Arbiter, plays the BEST Disney villain?!
Yooo
Yup. That's the guy. Also known as Spawn and Goliath from "Gargoyles".
I've seen both Road to El Dorado and Princess and the Frog more times than I can count and I had NO idea that cortez and ray were both voiced by Jim Cummings 😭
A theory I've seen, and love, is that the star is also the Blue Fairy from Pinocchio. Which I think really adds on that symbol of hope.
This outlines why I love intersecting plots involving foils. Done right and it makes a story far better than without.
god, i remember watching this movie back when it released in 2009. no scene has ever stuck with me the way dr. facilier's death did
The Princess and the Frog is not the studio's last traditionally animated feature film. Winnie-the-Pooh 2011 is.
I think he meant animated films that weren't tied to pre-established franchises.
@@timothyvanhoeck233 No, I'm pretty sure that's not what he meant.
@@trevorpacelli8056 Woah, chill man. Was only providing an alternative hypothetical...
It's interesting how Tiana and Facilier both come from poverty and a whole society that discriminates against them, but it has shaped them into such different people.
I love 2D animation, and wish they’d go back to it
28:29 - Didn't Hercules literally give up his godhood so he could be with Meg?
He did
I love that movie so much!!!
Honestly it's just nice to see someone in the art criticism talk positively about a movie
I hear so much negativity overall..
You kind of described the perfect sequel for this... Especially if they lean in to the age and culture of the age and location.
d-did you just make the perfect sequel to Princess and the frog?
Kinda did something I wished Rio 2 did instead too
