  • In Ep 2 of our SPEARFISHING SECRETS series we talk about the breathe up and how a couple of small changes can make a huge difference in your diving.
We cover the do's and don't when it comes to the all important final breath before you race down to spearfish that toffee.

Can you please make a video about speargun safety in the water, what is the best way using your speargun while you have a diving buddy with you. Thanks.

Question please. Do I hold my initial breathe during g the full dive or do I breathe out while unDer water?

Never breath out under water. The preasure in your lungs needs to be the same going down and when coming up.

Hi. Do you breathe in from the mouth before the dive

    • @Bloudam

Yes. Freedivers turn on their backs but i like to look down to see what is beneath me and continue breathing with my snorkel

This is all very true and comes straight from competition free diving handbook. Unfortunately it is irrelevant to spearfishing and downright dangerous if taken out of context. The two sports have very different physiological requirements. Without going into detail, it equates to a marathon runner training for sprinting. For a spearos that does 30-50 dives per day diving, hyper volumes inhalation like that is a guaranteed way of causing baro trauma to the lungs, is extremely uncomfortable for novice and even experienced divers, in reality shortens the bottom time and lose effectiveness after repeated dives. There is nothing wrong with doing a course like this provided the students are made well aware that it is applicable to free diving but irrelevant for spearos diving in the 10-20m range. (Some of these techniques do become relevant again for pros diving 30m+)

Hi Hendrik. Thank you for the comment. It sounds like you have a great knowledge about this. As i said i the video i am not a pofessional diver and this is just something that i found helpfull to my own diving and spearfishing, but maybe i am doing it wrong 😅

@@Bloudam All good and done in a spirit of “let’s put some points of discussion out there”. I started doing quite extensive research after struggling with breath hold for a long time despite having huge lung capacity. Things turned around for me when i moved away from the free diving dogma, especially the breath-up.

Very happy that it worked for you. That is the thing about this spprt. What works for me does not necessarily work for everybody

Great vid! greetings from Guam. for note I think most of all practice and constant time in the water will definitely gain you more bottom time . I’ve never took dive classes or watched videos like this but was diving everyday. I went from 20 ft to 100 plus regularly. now I can stay under a good 4 to 5 min and I’m a solo spearfisherman. I don’t have any technique besides staying calm and relaxing before I dive down . Good luck guys and stay safe out there 🤙
