1:53 I've been struggling with the hand movements. How do I move my hand through the frets without losing the sound from the string? It's literally the only issue I'm facing, so some help would be highly appreciated
I hear you! I've gotten better at this since I made this video. A couple things I've found - make the movement as small as possible so start right behind the fret, and only go right over it and then back again. The second thing is to use the hard tip of the finger more so than i am in the video, and the third is to keep a good amount of pressure - to get it to be smooth sounding is pure repetition! Keep at it and it will start to feel natural! It's not easy!
Pow Music Wow! What a quick reply! Thanks for the tip, I’ll be sure to practice it this way Also, I’ll now take this opportunity to (if you’re still doing Tom Misch stuff) ask you to do a video on The Journey. It’s a tune I’ve been wanting to do for a long time now and your vids are so easy to follow
@@bangersandmashism Thanks! I stopped playing around 2 years ago because of work but now I have time to get back to it, build calluses and practice more

This is helpful I've been trying to learn scales and how to play solo. A lot of people told me to learn scales and then others solos then i'll be able to practice on my own. I really want to learn neo soul type guitar so thanks for this 😊
Hi Sonii! To get good at soloing, the best thing you can do is try to figure out by ear the solos and licks that you love, and then play around with them and try to make them your own. Then, to really get freedom on the fretboard, it's great to understand what those notes are and how to organize them into scales, patterns, etc. The two approaches work great together.
I may be over simplifying this, but i just see this as the 4th position of the D# minor scale (the position that starts on the 5th scale degree on the low e string) with a few notes borrowed from the 3rd position and a couple blue notes added ( b2 or b9 and b5 on the trills). I try to relate everything back to the minor scale as its the first thing I learned 10 or so years ago, and I think most guitarists share this as the first or second scale they learned. Relative major would be F# major scale with the blue notes ( b3 and b7) if you think in relation to major key.
Only reason I was able to quickly make this realization was because of the awesome format, with the fret board overlay, you've used to present this. Extremely helpful. Awesome job!
When I'm soloing to something im just going off of feelings. When people say "oh play that again!" Lol I literally cannot remember it at all. They say "what'd you just do?' and I'm like "um, I was just trying to get a feeling to happen right there, I can't replicate it unless I get that feeling again lolol
Ok learning chords and tabs is like buying a new tool from Lowe's. But buying new tools and new supplies doesn't mean you will build a beautiful home. Being an architect is much different than being a contractor. So many musicians and aspiring musicians are practicing to be contractors for artists. But you guys gotta understand that learning someone else's art doesn't make you creative.... It makes you a good replicator. You guys gotta play on top of tracks by yourself and feel the music and forget all of the positions and chords and make something that sounds beautiful to ur own ear. Tom isn't thinking of technicalities when he solos like that. When I personally solo, I'm thinking about feelings.... Do I wanna sound happy? Chilled? Cool? Suave? Sad? Releived? Usually all of those feelings show up in my playing within like 6 seconds.... What ur trying to do on guitar is to speak an emotional langange with it. That's true playing. Find ur own sound. Find ur own voice. But if you want structured guidance I'd say listen to your favorite vocalists or singers and practice mimmicking runs and tones on ur guitar in their songs. Really listen to them. Mimmicks as much as the voice as possible including tempos and Mico tempos. And as you progress start trying to change notes midway and improvise. Think of the lyrics being said a different way and play it. And then start playing background vocals on guitar... Then start making up background vocals and loop it through songs. Then put all of this together on top of instrumentals and do this for hours a week. Before you know it people will be trying to copy ur chords and positions on their guitar and you'll have to tell them what I told you
Steve Vai uses Minor Pentatonic or Aeolian scales likes this also for SUS 2 and SUS 4 chords but you start on a different scale degree. I'm sure a lot of Soul music does this also but EVH uses SUS2 and SUS4 chords and when you play the minor pentatonic starting on a different scale degree other than the root note/tonic tonic you get these Lydian tonalities even those you're not playing the lydian mode of the key. Its a different way of getting an lydian tonality but using minor pentatonic scales starting on different scale degrees. Try to learn how Steve Vai does this lydian trick using minor pentatonic scales and do a lesson.
They are just the same scales that everyone learns, hes just taking the patterns and using them elsewhere to highlight notes, i could be wrong but i hope that makes sense.
Hey Patrick! You can look at someone like Todd Pritchard who is all fingers, and then someone like Tom Misch who uses both or Isaiah Sharkey, or Jairus Mozee who predominantly use a pick. It's all about what sound you are going for :D
Hey there, wondering if all the phrases were maybe just derived from G# Dorian (F# Major) in general, as opposed to having to "mentally" eliminate a few tones for the D# and A# minor pentatonic scales; or is there perhaps a reason to shift mental focus to pentatonic scales rather than just remain in a G# Dorian mindset. Thanks :)
Cat and Dylan Good question. As Tom has said in response to this lesson on Twitter, he doesn’t think of any theory at all… But the phrases are clearly pentatonic phrases, which is why I separated them into two Pentatonic frameworks, But yes, all just G sharp Dorian, so whatever works for you! :)
I dont understand the part at 4:31 . A G# Dorian is the same as F# Ionian with a flat 3rd and 7th right? But you’re playing the flat 2nd 3rd 6th and 7th. Doesn’t that make is phrygian. I don’t know what I’m missing. Very nice videoo though🔥🔥
@@PowMusic May I ask, how do you derive that the key is F# Major? The first chord is a G#9sus4, so how do you determine F# Major? But I agree, just want to understand the mindset. Great video!
