Every Ultralight Angler NEEDS THIS For Kayak Fishing!

- I took the kayak out during a fall transition day to discover the lake had flipped over and there was a major algae bloom impacting the clarity of the water. The shallow shorelines almost looked like an oil-based paint which turned anything that touched it green (my kayak included).
As I pedaled offshore, the water clarity improved, so that is where I felt the greatest confidence in catching fish. It wasn't long before I started to mark some schooling Crappie on my fish finder. That is when I decided to bust out a product which every kayak angler should own... A MARKER BUOY!
Marker Buoys are super simple products - essentially just a float with a weight and a string attached. It wouldn't be hard to make your own because of that. However, I happen to have a two pack of Eagle Claw Marker Buoys and they get the job done nicely for a low price. Available here: discounttackle.com/products/e...
These buoys are extremely helpful for all boat anglers as they allow you to create vantage points offshore. This can help you hold a location or a breakline effectively. For kayak anglers, they are even more important due to the nature of smaller watercraft being impacted by wind/current heavily.
Overall, I never caught any big fish that day, but it was a great time on the water and I always enjoy a good offshore Crappie bite. No complaints!

Love your content. You totally got me into ultralight fishing! Tight lines!
Love to hear it! Tight lines :)
Great video ethan ❤ always enjoying the content
Thank you :)
Great video. I’m adding marker buoy to my shopping list.
Honestly they come in handy a lot!
I might need one of those!
If you are able to mark key dropoffs, structure, or fish on a graph of some type, these come in handy big time. Even without electronics, they can help a lot after catching a fish or two.
Likely a bloom of Cyanobacteria or some kind of phytoplankton (could be diatoms, eukaryotic green algae, etc). If you had any recent rain this could contribute to them, as the rapid mixing of water coupled with agricultural runoff providing a large supply of nutrients can lead to a large bloom.
That's exactly what it is. Cyanobacteria has gone absolutely crazy here in Northern Ireland, the UKs largest inland body of water, Loch Neagh is here and it's almost completely covered due to government inaction. The bloom has now made its way into rivers and tributaries and is causing the deaths of animals and fish.
Crazy stuff! I am no scientist, so I really appreciate you sharing this with me. This lake is near a lot of farmland so clearly the runoff impacts it. Honestly it seems to make the lake nutrient-rich and gives it great growth conditions for fish. Until something like this happens that is...
Sweet video bud
Thanks!
My dad used to use bouys out at the drop off on our home lake and move between them for mid-summer, midday speck fishing. Always seemed to work out great. Good tool.
100% - they can help big time!
I bought some marker buoys this time last year. Definitely worth the investment.
They definitely come in handy for offshore situations
Nice video. Lots of fish. I haven’t found any crappie yet this year. Sure looking like fun.
Hope you get out and find a few soon!
Good video Ethan even if it's dink crappies. I purchased the 2 pack of neon green ones many moons ago. I like them a lot to reference our location for the drift and jig. Some of the forest preserve lakes near us have sunken fish attractors and brush piles that aren't on their maps and guides.
Sounds like you and I fish very alike :)
Good video, thanks for the ideas. I like the markers til the rude folks pull up next to you, hit the waypoint and swamp you as they leave not saying a word.
Yeah that would be annoying... The thing with these Crappie was they were honestly scattered and not on clear structure. They could have pretty much been anywhere. My guess is they were focused on where the baitfish were moving around.
That’s about the size crappie I’ve been finding with the kicker 12” Blacknose.
I think this lake is going through a rough year or two. Seems like it is getting choked out with dinky crappie
Belleville lake where I fish is green and stinky also.
Hope you have been catching a few despite the gross water!
kayak set up video
I will have to look into that. Thanks!
You testing out any new ultralights soon? I’ve been looking at the ray fishing golden feather ultralight and was wondering if you would review it
I have thought about that rod several times. Maybe I will add it to the list for 2024!
I want to try out some braid for my ultralight rod. Is the Spro finesse braid still your favorite? I was thinking of trying the Phenix iron feather braid but I can’t find many reviews on it. Thanks
I’ve heard the iron feather is legit but have yet to try it myself. Spro is my favorite of any I’ve used at this point!
im about to purchase a 7'2" trickstick light action and ducket crappie slayer 6'6" what reels would you suggest i put on both of these for panfish.
Size 2000 Daiwa or Shimano
I know you’re not using a live scope but I am personally really against live scoping. It puts too much pressure on the fish. I read last year that even the Michigan DNR advised anglers not to use them. I know you’re a catch and release guy but being able to find those suspending fish that otherwise would not be caught puts undue stress / pressure on the fisheries. That’s almost a direct quote from the DNR.
Where did they post about that? Interested to see it.
@@RamonOutdoors it was in an MLive news article I read last year.
@@RamonOutdoors I don’t get live scoping. I would feel like I am cheating if I ever used one. Finding the fish is half the equation and when you eliminate that part of the equation what’s the point? Seems boring.
@@Tightt88 I’ll have to look for it.
@@Tightt88 knowing where the fish are and catching them are two different things. I don’t use forward facing sonar, but I think it would be similar to bed fishing. Still have to catch the fish and sometimes they just don’t bite.
how do you make your own soft plastic mold
I believe I answered you on another video but I would recommend doing some google research. Tons of different ways! I used to do it with plaster of paris.
