@Bebo What make is your frame? Do you have it posted on IG or anywhere else? I would just recommend quality parts. Gran Compe-H Plus Son wheelset from Velomine. Silver cranks(Shimano or Campy). You can go black or silver for seatpost clamp and headset/cockpit. It’s personally preference tbh.
This was my biggest takeaway. You take the time to research parts, tools and how to assemble parts and you come out so much more knowledgable at the end. That stays with you for the future. Then you tell all your friends, yeah I built this baby myself.
Nicely done! Just a couple additional thoughts from a member of the “steel is real” mafia; 1) With a new steel frame, find someone who knows what they’re doing with the right tools to face the bottom bracket and chase the paint from the threads. You will be rewarded with a lifetime of well aligned bottom bracket bearings that thread on smoothly. 2) Likewise, get the head tube and crown races ground. Hands free riding is so much better on bikes prepped this way. 3) Nothing wrong with grease. Nothing. But-on same rack as grease at a good bike shop is anti-seize, use this on anything other than bearings. A little better for those applications in terms of keeping stuff from slipping, preventing corrosion, and more resistant to washing out. Superb for bottom brackets to aluminum frames and cogs to wheels. 4) I absolutely concur with conclusion that if you are approaching bicycle components with an electric power tool, something is wrong. Never mind that I recently had to (successfully) resort to using an impact wrench to remove a freewheel that had been on a tandem for over 30 years…
@Bebo You misunderstood my comment. Welding/gluing/brazing frame parts together is "building" a bike frame. Taking a bunch of parts out of a box and fastening them together is "assembling."
@Bebo Let's call it day. No need to carry this on any further. You're entitled to comment as you wish, so am I. So we disagree. No biggie. I'm looking forward to a nice ride tomorrow on one of my Wabis...
Ahhhh! Purple is also my favourite colour BUT the correct shade. That looks like a base coat of purple. It needs to be deeper - I would buy the Soma Rush if given the choice of the two. One thing that Wabi nailed is those delicious cranks!
Im not a super fan of purple but that Soma Rush is on point. This wabi looks like a funky crayola color. The sparkle is pretty dope but that funky lavender creme is... well not dope at all imo. The yellow one is my favorite still. Totally dig that particular yellow. Another dope color is 70’s peugeot green
Bought a Torker U-district fixie for 60 bucks. Beat to hell but it rides. My poor ass is going to try and built it up this winter hopefully by next year's riding season I'll be able to save enough to get it dialed in. It's my first bike as an adult and making it into a daily commuter. Running a 40/20 ⚙️ right now but need to bring it down to a 38/20 for the terrain. Been really loving this Chanel and have been watching everything the past 2 months. Learning as much as possible. I recently grabbed a chain whip. One tool at a time! Haha
Glad you got your dream bike, man. Also shoutout to you for letting me know about Wabi. I've been riding fixed gears since 2006, was riding the Raleigh Rush Hour. I got my Special about a month ago, Autumn Copper. Dudes in nice cars turn their heads to check out that bike, and it's such a joy to ride!
Thx for the heads up. I’ll avoid the autumn copper so as not to entice dudes in nice cars checking me out. Congrats on your exploits with dudes in nice cars, I guess, but I’d be more interested in women taking a second look. 😂
@@sirmixalot3332 My lady is jealous they don't come in her size. Other exploits you may be interested in.... Junkies: That whole fucking thing is made out of copper and we need to steal it!
Alternative to greasing saddle rails on a creaking saddle is to put a layer of electrical tape where the rails meet the clamp. I have a Flite Titanium perched atop a Nitto S65 seat post and the titanium rails don’t seem to get along with the aluminium clamp. It produces the most irritating creaking noises. Grease was a great temporary fix. Electrical tape holds up much longer though. No noise ever since I installed it.
I built my dream bike back in 2016, and still kicking today. Actually I sent it to the repaint shop, waited for 1 week and will pick it up home later ;)
Zach, detachment of rear sprocket fix. Try rapping rear sprocket with a old chain, and place it in a bolted 🔩 down vice and turn "whole" wheel counter clockwise it should unscrew... good luck 👍
definitely recommend a spray on bolt penetrating spray/oil (pb blaster, wd40, liquid wrench, etc). I had a similar situation with my cog that was put on by the factory and seemed to be torqued down by king kong. After spraying some pb blaster, waiting a couple minutes, and the rotafix method, the cog came off with ease.
Wow one thing though, when applying the bottom bracket, make sure the threads aren’t fully painted on. If so please be careful when installing the bb as it can stripped the threads sometimes, depending on how heavy the coating is. Normally you should be able to install the bb by hand with ease, normally if it is painted you wanna get it retapped and bored so it can sit flush and to clean the threads from the paint. Now this step can be optional as the service from bike shows can be expensive but bike shops offer this service.
Beautiful build! Great component choices to compliment the new frame. Do you ever think of getting a work stand or does the tree do it's job well enough?
To help get a stuck cog off - use a small purpose butane torch. It will heat the molecules in the metal and cause them to move at microscopic levels to release the friction. I’ve done this many times. No don’t torch the absolute shit out of it, just simply heat it up. You could have avoided the dremel completely .
I just ordered a fixie bike to put a gas motor on... thank you for your videos as I didn't know about the cogs on both sides of the rear wheel. I'm going to have to remove one to put a sprocket for the motor... just ordered a rear rotor adapter to mount the sprocket to... should work out? Only one way to find out lol
13:05 "And when you're torquing you wanna keep in mind you're trying to do two things: you're trying to do it smoothly but also firmly" what a perfect moment for my mom to walk past and mistake this for a twerking tutorial
Really bothers me to see how you tried getting that cog off. You could have been more patient, apply penetrating oil, tried to get it loose by trying to skid without a lockring on a safe bit of road or parking lot, perhaps with a front brake mounted for safety. Now you just messed up the cog and the single spoke (that does need to be replaced!), it really pains me Zach.
Proof here, that you will almost always run into at least one road bump when building a bike. Rather than trying to force something, the best thing you can do is take a break and clear your mind for a moment. Then re-analyze the situation, maybe watch some videos about your problem/forums and try again. If it's still not working, then take it to your LBS the next day. It's a hard pill to swallow, especially when you were pumped to go take your new build for a ride, but the alternative is probably being more bummed out when you realize you just permanently fucked something up.
@ Zach .. Where can I get a good Japan Track bike like you have for cheap ?? !! Under $500 cheap .. Or should I just get a fix gear modify it to a Keirin bike ..
Actually, gold isn't the only colour Izumi Super Toughness comes in. It used to be, but this year, for the Tokio Olympics, Izumi made a special edition, called the Super Toughness Kai.
The moment I saw that beautiful shade of purple 🤩 I decided I'm going to strip my bike and repaint it to that exact hue and I'm buying keirin sparkle clear coat as well. It looks so amazing 😍. One moment I saw the purple Wabi the next moment it was all out of stock...
Yup - the purple pops with royalty bragging rights. At least the perminantly fixed cog won't unwind on the down hills. The red stem cap and double straps convey that you are a connoisseur of understated bling. That said, the way a bicycle looks is always of utmost importance. May you get countless hours and miles on you new ride.
;Nice video, I think a day of sparing the cog with some PB Blaster with some abrupt "impacts" would've gotten it off. Being a auto tech in Chicago, I deal with a lot of seized bolts and parts haha
I bet you could have loosened that sprocket if you used a mallet on your chain tool. I once removed a cassette by leveraging my chain tool under a kitchen drawer while I twisted the lock ring tool in the opposite direction
I don't think not adding grease to a square taper is quite right tbh (there have been tests by multiple experienced parties (Jobst Brandt, Compass cycle etc.) (I also have tried with grease without any problems and without but that leads to other problems). Not greasing it will lead to corrosion if ridden in the wet, just use a calibrated torque wrench and it will be fine
I grease the tapers and have never had a problem in the 10 years of owning my bike. Gets a new bottom bracket about every year or so and everything works as it’s supposed to.
Question: I was always under the impression we should put a bit of grease on the BB spindles so they don’t seize onto the spindle itself. If I’m not mistaken that happened to your suginos and you recommended it. I could be wrong.
Beats me how he confidently skids with 15/48, grippy gatorskins and drop bar way down low, especially when going downhill fast. Like to see a video showing that...
So, did you take the rear wheel to a bike shop, to get it fixed and the spoke replaced? Please say you did not leave your cog with a big cut in it? 🤔😀😀😉 Liking the bike though, loverly colour, good choice 👍
There are certain aluminium components that absolutely should be setup using a torque wrench: certain stems really like to crack at the faceplate if overtightened. Not instantly, but over time. But these are mostly quite lightweight aluminium parts.
God's cosmic energy is a peculiar thing. In the middle of your vid I was reminded of not having cut the 350mm long aluminum seat post on a 63cm frame, steel. After considerable difficulty I got the post out but had only a Dremel tool and tiny cut off wheel; cutting at an angle because the wheel is smaller than my hand holding the tool. Doing this I thought not an intelligent solution but the post is shortened so success. Then I continued with your vid and there you were, cut off wheel at the ready! SOLADARITY!
Zach, you didn't talk about how important chainline is when building a new bike. I like a quiet drivetrain and there is nothing more important than a proper chainline to quiet a noisy drivetrain. Otherwise nice video!

i didn't expect them to work but the red straps actually look really nice with the purple
You need a propane torch to remove that cog. Soak with wd40, apply heat, and repeat till it comes off. The heat will help break up the corosion.
i actually have a real purple wabi, not a lavender one . love the sparkle though
I thought you had that purple alter chainring for that purple wabi
too much purple is not proper
He put it on later.
I like to line up the valve stem with the psi range written on the tire, and then trace over it with a white gel pen so you can read it at a glance.
I’m building a fixed gear from an old Bridgestone ! Can’t wait !!!!
I bought a vintage Schwinn bike. The previous owner had painted it a deep metallic orange. With black handlebar tape it is stunning. Best bike color.
Zach running hollowtechs?!?! No way!!!!!

Dude, you finally got your purple bike! I'm happy for you man 😊
You should have hit the chain whip handle with a mallet. You can exert a lot more momentary force that way to break the seized cog free.
Great timing! I am planning to assemble my own Fixed Gear bike.
You looked so genuinely happy when unpacking that made me happy too

Purple is one of the the best colour that for sure. 🎉👍🏻

The pure joy in your face when you're unboxing the frame 😁
Is the face of most people when they get something for free. 🤷🏻♂️
My Purple Wabi came on Monday! I’m loving it. I decided to go with black components even tho I agree, silver is more classic.
Silver!
Love the wider tires on this build
Wow great video great tutorial
I love that the frame is lugged

Hey, I was going to mention the same thing! My cog got stuck a while ago and left PB blaster on it for one hour, then it came right off.
Oh NO!!!! I had work to finish tonight, but now it's tomorrow!!! Zach just HAD to rip open space-time in the edit...
Am I the only one who thought the yellow looks nicer???
Rainbow flake. Not too flashy. I gotta say, I like your way of thinking...
shoulda used PB Blaster on that cog. I'd bet a set of sugino 75's it woulda free'd it up
I couldn’t sleep this evening so I took my fixed gear bike out for a 12 mile spin. Head better and now I can have good dreams 😎

Wondering the exact same thing
There are certain aluminium components that absolutely should be setup using a torque wrench: certain stems really like to crack at the faceplate if overtightened. Not instantly, but over time. But these are mostly quite lightweight aluminium parts.
Common issue with the Thomson x4 that they had to sell “dress-up” faceplates hah
brown as an accent color would look really dope with the purple honestly
That's what I'm doing with my purple special
Like a tiger’s eye stone color would be dope too!!!
With that tone I'd go with brigh yellow like Ozymandias from whatchmen

sweet blue bike.
Yes for the doggo break 💙
track frames with super high bottom brackets? in the low 50's? i wanna get a bigger then normally suited frame with an already high bb and fit 165mm cranks.
the amount of innuendo's is why im here.
Nice build, what are you going to do with the yellow bike?
The actually made Gallardo purple!!!
Personally I would of gone with maybe a yellow accent colour , red and purple are kind of contrasting in a bad way but sick either way
Can you make a content about slope frames?
Nice bike 👍 are you keeping or selling the yellow one? (Just the frame and forks)
And if yes, how much, and would you post to the UK?

Smoothly...but firmly.
Felt like that one episode of Spongebob where he is teaching Patrick to put a lid on a jar
Do exactly....as I do...
lol
Very nice bike! Too bad they won't make it anymore in this color.....(( i have silver components and Gold rims that could go on one of those frames!!!
Great video and what a beautiful bike!
Just wondering if this drivetrain sound at 21:16 is a normal fixed gear bikes sound? I built my first fixie recently and it sounds the same
thats the crakset and chain cycling.
Unless your drilling in your frame to put water bottle hole mounts, don't use power tools on bikes👍🏽
You better tighten that headset 27:51
I got a black Chris king headset in for the wabi special Kieran purple but they didnt have 58cm and the 25 they did make sold before the page loaded for me😭
Uhh can someone give me a full tool set list which I'm gonna need when I'm building my bike ?
PRO TIP: Use a clean plastic tire lever to slightly pry the seat post clamp/binder to avoid scratching the seat post with zig-zags and marks.
Can you do a video about how to install a steer tube? I know they’re all different rebut I took mine off and the bearing ring fell out and I don’t remember how any of it goes lol
See my steel road bike is 1kg heavier than your fixie to accommodate the gearing and breaks. A worthy trade-off imo.
