The kid is following Yoda's philosophy: "do or do not; there is no try." In other words, he's mad at his adopted father for picking a fight he couldn't win. The kid _should have been_ mad at all the other adults in the village for not backing his dad up. They're the ones who failed. I mean, if one dude almost beat the entire gang, just two more guys helping him could've changed the outcome.

And in the manga it is even worse, because in the manga his hugs are amputated and he is crucified without his arms.

The dog learn how to swim for it self... so no one have to jump so save it, and when it swim away, not even look the kid who was drowning.
