Equalizer is incrsibly strong, contractor is simply ran on builds which are able to deplete the opponents tempo and then force damage with judgement and equalizer or keep their tempo at zero with the aforementioned moves. Its popular with shadow and solar for a reason. Also, the clip of shadow gun giving max tempo is because single blast shadow gun steals a ton of ether and procced dark god, not cause of elemental rebound.
mods and devs get this awesome counter that you didn't mention, it activates after they die like res bell and it's called "you're getting nerfed next friday"
they nerfed equalizer to the point where its now the worst mantra ever before u could avoid the crazy punish frames by sliding but now if u go for a equalizer it either gets canceled or u js sit there and eat a hit its so god awful its not even a reaction counter cuz of the 0 hyperarmor and how easily its cancelled u gotta guess for everything it sucks
ngl equalizer is still good but trash at the same time imo it should be reworked a suggestion for a rework would be: summon judgements circle below you if hit during this duration (around 1 sec) a version of judgement will pop out of the ground dealing a bit less dmg then judgement but not being ventable

punishment is actually really interesting as once you get it you can actually movestack it with some mantras applying knockdown and setting up for another combo. Works really well against gun users. Also could lighting clones with the static flash clone talent be a counter? If they try to hit you, you hit them with your clone and gain I frames. though it activates regardless of being hit or not, only doing damage when they are close.
I ain't gonna lie, i'm a unbidden lover, but it does need some buffs (Ik its bad but honestly running it is pretty fun, its like an extra parry and i can act first if i counter someone)
