This is absolutely fantastic. You guys are so great at doing panel! Natural presenters and the trivia questions/prizes was such a nice touch. Amazing job guys!
The last couple.of years I have had severe health problems. Ive been required to leave my job of 20 years and am only recently starting to gain a grasp of what it will take to get better and travel down the path to health. At my worst I found extreme enjoyment in watching the Retroblasting content. Thanks for taking my mind away from my health issues the last few years if only for fleeting moments. I was a fan every since I heard Michael say "God I hate Shipwreck"! Fan for life!!!!
Wow, TMNT was filled with satire and parody in the original comics. All because of two guys who were thinking randomly while being inspired by superhero comics. Without the Daredevil comics, we would never had TMNT comics, shows, movies, toys, etc.
Thanks again for sharing another awesome panel, and I'm really happy for you guys to have had what seems to be a packed SRO attendance because it means more panels like these for next year. =) Can't wait for your TMNT Retroblasting videos!
You guys are the best when ever I'm down or sad I watch your videos and I just want to say thanks for what you do and I hope I can see you at dragon con this year.
I just thought I'd look at this abs then saw it was almost an hour. I thought eh I'll never finish this. I ended up watching the whole thing. your panels and videos are great!
I like the panel discussion. Wish I could have been therd, but I was a little disappointed you guys didn't mention "Adolcent Radioative Black belt Hampsters" as part of your knock off topic. For that matter what about "Clint The Hampster Triumphant"?
I'm interested in Mike saying he wanted to discuss Biker Mice figures. I thought I was the only person on the planet still trying to find those things.
Great panel guys, well done! I do remember the confusion at the time where as a child I wondered why in America it was called Ninja Turtles but in the UK it was Hero Turtles. It wasn't until the movies came out I started to understand it was the UK that made the changes. You probably might already know this but in regards to Michelangelo's nunchakus while the 80s show in the UK was mostly edited I still saw episodes on TV,Sky or video where some scenes involving Michelangelo's weapons were left in. There was the five-part pilot compilation video released in the UK back in 1990 called 'How It All Began' and depending on the actual video or whether you saw the pilot on TV Michelangelo's weapons can be seen when Splinter introduces April to them. It was very inconsistent editing. If you want I can supply more detail by e-mail. Last thing I want to add is that while the nunchakus were banned from the series Michelangelo's action figure came with them! Unfortunately they broke as soon as I opened the pack.
Going through the Retroblasting back catalogue during the holidays. Love this, wish I’d been there to experience it first hand. Is it just my imagination or was Sal Vador there asking questions? If it’s not him then it’s a dude who sounds remarkably like him! 😂❤
Did anyone else cringe at the "DonnatelloxApril" crazy, shipper fan-girl in the back?... We were having such a nice, civil time going down memory lane! XD Great job though RetroBlasting! I JUST found you guys last night and you make great content and really fun panel videos as well! :D Cowabunga!
Really enjoyed this panel guys! Quite a few bits of trivia I wasn't familiar with, particularly the bit about the inspiration for Casey Jones. After hearing it I was like "oh ya I can totally see that now, makes sense." Keep up the awesome work!
Another great panel! I learned lots of things I didn't know before about the Turtles. One point of correction: While I agree that the characters look awful in Ninja Turtles III, Jim Henson's Creature Shop is incorrectly blamed. The Creature Shop only worked on I and II. The All Affects Company did the third film -- and it shows. Keep up the great work! en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teenage_Mutant_Ninja_Turtles_III
I find it weird that Venus from next mutation is so hated by Laird, yet they were planning to introduce a 5th turtle anyway; another brother called Kirby. The way I see it, that would have been even worse than Venus, because their designs had him looking too vastly different. He wouldn't have fit in at all, he would have upset the many balances between the 4 brothers and I have no doubt they would have pulled out all the stops to make him "extreme" or whatever. He would have been Poochie! Awesome panel btw, as always! Keep up the great work.
Wasn't Turtles in Time the video game, not the name of Turtles 3? I thought the third movie was just called Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 3. Awesome topic, thank you for the panel.
RetroBlasting….love your channel and videos. Awesome work. These panels at DragonCon are great. Compliments aside….A note on UK Hero Turtles and the exclusion of Michelangelo's nunchaku….. I think these were cut (cartoon/film) more in line with the BBFC (UK censors) strict weapon policy. James Ferman (the then head) had a huge thing about Martial Arts weapons and all film's and videos were cut back then in line with his 'weapons policy'…. The Bruce Lee films were cut to ribbons and even Dragnet (1987) had a scene with a poster of Nunchaku cut from it…This was latter reversed in 1999 once Ferman was gone…Your right to say there was a moral panic about homemade Nunchaku, but this was from the late 70's when they were being used by hooligans in Football related violence…Silly really, as unless your really skilled, your more likely to hurt yourself!….My Michelangelo had Nunchaku, but i got that toy in Spain, not main land UK.
Check this page here for the full description of how much the 1990 movie was changed/cut. Having had the VHS copy all those years, I can confirm the censored version was as described: movie-censorship.com/report.php?ID=3927
to be fair "samurai pizza cats" was a poorly translated and censored anime series by saban. the cats were cybernetic not mutants and its based in a robotic cyber feudal toyko with all kinds of animals. saban just wanted to grab something to quickly compete with ninja turtles. also bucky ohare was created by larry hama and michael golden, it became comic series at the same time turtles came out it was its own thing. i would say the biggest culprit that was aping ninja turtles was the street sharks.
i have to say again this was a great, well done panal and thank you for doing these. one thing i wanted to say about the original movie,in a time before internet in which keeping a secret on a movie is really tough,i remember it being a big surprise that casey jones was in the movie, but a pleasant one cause the crowd goes nuts when he shows up. the thing that bothered me the most with the changes in the new movie,is that the foot soldiers are not ninjas, the fact that they are just generic goons is kinda lame.
love the panel, but i'm supurised you guys didn't talk about "turtles forever", which was a crossover special from 2009 with the 1987 and 2003 cartoon turtles and even the 1984 comic turtles.
Thanks for the info. I new where the creators got the idea for the Foot clan, but I had no idea that the way the turtles was created was at the same time Dare Devil became blind.
35:07...Samurai Pizza Cats ! As a teenager I had no idea the Anime I was watching had been bought and re-named and rewritten (full of 90's pop culture references) for North America specifically Canada. Love that show.
Mike, Oliver Harper (youtuber around our age I think) is from London I believe and he also states that in England they did have a ban of some sort on nunchukas. I believe if you watch his review on TMNT 1 & 2 you will hear his conjecture on the subject as well. Oliver Harper *****
Did you know that in Germany they inserted special sounds into the Turtles fight scenes like coocoos clocks, door bells and rattles in the cartoon and the movies, so that it appeared less violent?! And we had TM Hero Turtles also... :/
Hello Guys, as usual you delivered a top quality panel. AWESOME work! I wish I had the funding to help you do panels and videos full-time :) Thank you for your hard work, it is very appreciated at my household...
Melinda brought up an interesting topic comparing Wolverine and TMNT. When the turtles were introduced in 1984, Logan's background hadn't been established but Eastman & Lair probably heard about Dave Cockrum's intended origin at the time. He imagined Wolverine literally was an animal evolved to human form and sentience by the High Evolutionary. So Wolverine nearly became one of Marvel comics' many New Men like Count Tagar & Sir Porga. I think the Cowabunga/Booyakasha analysis was the highlight of this panel for me. I believe Casey Jones is perhaps the only character to mention cowabunga in Mirage comics continuity. It's yelled when he leaps from a taxi in the Unmentionables caper involving a brass cow.
KC Jones story Made me cry just origin story’s i try to handle it. it’s to dark in my Pass my Dad was A bad Father Then my Motber Died of Cancer 3 years ago.
I have loved the turtles since the 80's. My brother had the original comics (going to have to ask him if he still has them because at 10,000 dollars ebay selling there's my niece's college fund - LOL) and I read those plus the movies and cartoons. I am a rarity because I happen to like the TMNT 3 time travel movie on top of the female turtle Venus. It gave the younger tweens and girls someone to look up to. the various other movies and cartoons I haven't seen a lot of other than the CGI turtles movie. I don't remember a lot about that so I am renting that one soon. the newest movie I am not sure of. The hulking behemoths are very intimidating and scary to say the least. It's like the incredible hulk and a golopagos turtle had a kid. Ugh, They are so far removed from the original comics its scary. I mean the original turtles came from baby turtles and are suppose to be smaller than people. Thank you for posting the dragoncon panel. I would suggest next time if possible have a microphone that can be passed around so we can hear the questions and answers from the crowd. I couldn't hear a single word of what the crowd said. Other than that, absolutely great video.
The first episodes were the best! Animation was better, dialogue was better, and the story was great. I remember those airing on Sundays for a while, which was odd.
I know this is an old video but the word is Booyaka shot it’s a it’s a Jamaican word it’s the sound of a of gun shot I’ve been familiar with the word since the 80’s I have few Jamaican friends your brother mentioned Ali G saying it yeah he was listening to a lot reggae music even his accent on the show was that of a Jamaican I guess new age people think they are saying sha at the end or just mispronouncing it
I have to disagree about the samurai pizza cats cartoon. It was awesome, I loved it as a kid and I still like it as an adult. To be completely honest I like it way better than the TMNT cartoon. It has an anime aesthetic and cool mecha design that always appealed to me and the characters are quirky and likable. It even had a good dub that was funny and benefited from straying from the source material with its meta jokes although I do wish they hadn’t changed the big cheese from being a Fox to a rat. It was one of the cartoons I watched in the early nineties that helped solidify my love of the anime aesthetic before the term anime was used to describe Japanese animation.
Well yeah i understand. It is hard to talk to people who don't read comics, but still you could tell them in the comics and the 2003 cartoon they are called Utroms. Anyway awesome video hope to see more glad you like TMNT now. :D
It annoys me, that alot of people can't get past the cartoon image of the turtles... I use o be A TMNT Fan sense the cartoon Came out at the Time I had no Idea KC Jones. a more a story to him i never Read thecComics back then always know KC Jones Never Took Shit. from Any one i wish he became a samrai or Brcame Shreders nemesis it. was always splinter fun character i loved was Ace Duck.
Great panel, loads of stuff I didn't know. One thing though, I'm from Britain, my brother had the Michaelangelo figure and interestingly it DID come with the nun chucks.
I actually like The Next Mutation. Oh, I don't think it's good. In fact I think it's terrible. It clearly is a horrible horrible show. But here's the thing. It's Batman and Robin bad. It's revel in its lameness bad. It's quality cheese bad. It's so fun to watch and laugh at all the stupid crap in it. It's genuinely enjoyable on that level. I honestly do have fun watching it. Then again, I have fun watching Power Rangers, the original Dark Shadows, Batman and Robin, and Land Of The Lost. I don't require things to be good in order to have fun watching them. In fact, sometimes the bad things can make for the best viewing experiences. I just watched Spock's Brain last week so that should tell you everything you need to know.
***** I see. I wouldn't have thought it was directly linked to the success of the Turtles that they went for a cartoon, but it makes sense. I also skipped through the video at some parts so I might've missed you mentioning Battletoads, a quite clear "inspired" video game franchise.
Is there any proof that Larry Hama and Michael Golden created Bucky O'Hare as early as 1978? Even if that's true, Bucky's first appearance is a small part of a Continuity comics anthology called Echo of Futurepast. Coincidentally, that issue and TMNT Volume 1 issue 1 have the exact same May 1984 cover date. The black and white Bucky O'Hare graphic novel wasn't released until 1986. If you count Mirage Studios Presents Gobbledygook #1, (based on the 1st TMNT ad on the back cover), that gives the turtles a slight edge.
Mike and Don as the popular arcade characters? Psst, no one wanted to play as them! It was always Ralph and Leo. Also Bucky O'Hare came out at the same time as TMNT so you can't say it was inspired by it.
If TMNT hadn't been a successful cartoon and toyline, do you really think Bucky O'Hare would have been mined by competitors, or even considered, for a cartoon and toyline? The other companies were looking to find talking animal shows of their own after TMNT made its big splash. The *marketing* of characters like Bucky O'Hare was the DIRECT RESULT of TMNT's success.
Why do you always talk about the bad things about everything? You spent 20 seconds talking about the good things. That's not just in this! It's in every video of yours!
***** That makes since, but why not talk a little more on the pros than cons. I mean seriously, I like your channel, I'm evan subscribed, but are you here to talk about the bad side of everything? I thought this channel was to tell us about classic toys and collectables, not talk about every down side of them!
This is absolutely fantastic. You guys are so great at doing panel! Natural presenters and the trivia questions/prizes was such a nice touch. Amazing job guys!

"Pizza" came in from another influence apparently... Who was that then?

excellent panel! just some additional trivia: there was also a japanese OVA in '96 with the title "mutant turtles superman legend". it is hilarious!
Yes, the manriki gusari. I remember when Michaelangelo introduced it. Never understood why. Thank you.
I actually played a campaign of the TMNT tabletop in Highschool; it's a legit fun tabletop

Why did the toy Shredder look nothing like the cartoon? That always puzzled me as a kid. Thanks!

I actually had the original G1 Mickey action Figure in the UK and it came with his nunchucks.
I think the ban on nunchaku was only limited to their depiction in media. I used to have a set of life-size plastic toy ones as a kid.
Used to love the role-play game...
I remember Hip Hop MC KRS1 saying BOOYAKASHA way before turtles or Sasha
Its a common exclamation in Reggae music too and has been for decades before Tmnt.
The 3rd film actually didn’t have the Jim Henson company working with them instead they used some other company which explains how bad it got
At 10:44 it's Utroms
who Remmbers Ace Duck
Great panel folks.
KC Jones story Made me cry just origin story’s i try to handle it. it’s to dark in my Pass my Dad was A bad Father Then my Motber Died of Cancer 3 years ago.
Where is that cool CBS art poster behind you?
They called the utroms Krang
I thought the canister broke and splashed dare-devil in the eyes, blinding him???
Peter Laird actually defended the movie. And Kevin Eastman kind of got screwed over in creative control of the movie
I have loved the turtles since the 80's. My brother had the original comics (going to have to ask him if he still has them because at 10,000 dollars ebay selling there's my niece's college fund - LOL) and I read those plus the movies and cartoons. you guys rock!
Ernie Rey’s was also playing the best Roll. ass A pizza guy In ninja turtles 2
Hand/ Foot Clan.......How did I miss that???
Sho Kusugi! Yes!
Ahhh.....my buddies.
The first episodes were the best! Animation was better, dialogue was better, and the story was great. I remember those airing on Sundays for a while, which was odd.
I know this is an old video but the word is Booyaka shot it’s a it’s a Jamaican word it’s the sound of a of gun shot I’ve been familiar with the word since the 80’s I have few Jamaican friends your brother mentioned Ali G saying it yeah he was listening to a lot reggae music even his accent on the show was that of a Jamaican I guess new age people think they are saying sha at the end or just mispronouncing it
USagi was great characterer. ben he was from Manga Japanese Anime
I have to disagree about the samurai pizza cats cartoon. It was awesome, I loved it as a kid and I still like it as an adult. To be completely honest I like it way better than the TMNT cartoon. The Krang as you call them is wrong in the comics they are called the Utrom not Krang.
Well yeah i understand. It is hard to talk to people who don't read comics, but still you could tell them in the comics and the 2003 cartoon they are called Utroms. Anyway awesome video hope to see more glad you like TMNT now. :D
Cool video
Remember Earnie Reyes the Pizza guy
Samurai Pizza Cats is amazing and funny....You are in the wrong here RetroBlasting.
nes turtles game was hard, not impossible..but frustratingly hard
It annoys me, that alot of people can't get past the cartoon image of the turtles... I was in high school at the height of turtle hype, and how the stories are different, but simillair, we talked about it once in class for some reason, and I let people know I myself have trouble getting over the way people don;t know, so I guess I am the other side of the coin, I really hope that deleted scene of mikey going ballistic on that punching bag, and then the barn is somewhere, hopefully to be added to a future media release whatever, it might be... I would buy the movie again to see that, frickin greed turned the turtles movies into worse and worse versions of themselves, first one was the best one

Great video! :D
where do i get that poster behind u guys the long one?
sweet !!!! I wish I could of attended
Ya, I hate the toy hunter. Because he pays people crap for their toys. I'm always jealous saying I wish I could pay u twice as much for that gem . Lol
The first kid I saw playing with a TMNT was a girl.
I did Tow
The brain creatures in the comics are not the kramg
Come to think of it...are they really teenagers?
i love tmnt and fnaf
I'm going to take you back to
what happen To Ace Duck Ace & leather head & metal Head
the New movie should of been for Nc17. or teens
TMNT knock-offs? Battle Toads!

Then don't watch
***** That makes since, but why not talk a little more on the pros than cons. I mean seriously, I like your channel, I'm evan subscribed, but are you here to talk about the bad side of everything? I thought this channel was to tell us about classic toys and collectables, not talk about every down side of them!
